    R Brown, did you try the microadjustment? It´s on the top burr, locked by the lever. You can make it coarser (increasing the number, it´s 1-10) or fine. Give a try!

    Your videos will be of great help to a lot of people with these machines. I began tinkering with my broken secondhand machine about a year ago, the issues it had are too numerous to mention here in one comment! Thankfully all are currently resolved and it is working perfectly. One issue I had was my grind was way too course even on setting 1. I had to flip up the smaller white cog under the dial and move the large cog about three teeth along to recalibrate the grind parameters. It now gives me the range i need to get a good grind. I would say to anybody maybe attempting this, ensure to not go too fine or the burrs could touch. You are not really missing much not having the adjustable upper burr. I have found it's range almost negligible so far.

      Good information on the newer grinder and it's new adjustment mechanism. I suppose if my grinder were to wear out, it could be replaced with a newer model grinder as all that fine adjustment mechanism is inside the unit.

    "As the grinder wears, the coffee will get coarser and coarser."
    Bingo!
    This is what I'm experiencing with my 870XL. It's 4 1/2 years old now and I've noticed I'm maxed out at the fine end of the adjustment knob. I came here to get an idea of how things look inside. Gonna have to open mine up.
    I just assumed the grinding burrs have worn. But perhaps there's something loose. The top nut perhaps? Or if my machine has additional adjustment inside, then I should be set.
    I also purchased some "burr grinder cleaner" about a year ago. Still haven't used it. Perhaps that should be my first assault and see how it does.
    Either way, thank you so much for posting!

    • @The4Crawler
      @The4Crawler  2 роки тому +1

      Good idea to check inside for any obvious signs or wear and anything loose. Should be clear if you have the adjustable burr type grinder, mine is old enough to not have that. There was also a comment in this video from someone who mentioned it might be possible to re-index the grinder on the adjustment mechanism and/or clean it out underneath if that's part of the issue.

    Great job. Very interesting and shows you have a real grasp on the technical. I don't have to take mine apart now! And, 1 is fine is the best thing to remember if you're looking to adjust... Did you know that sour is too coarse or too little and bitter is too fine or too much? Also, too tamped can make it bitter - while not tamped enough can make it sour...
    The internal fine tune is very easy to deal with if you take out the top burr...

    I saw in the comments that few people had same issue that when you setting the wheel on coarser and coarser but coffee is still fine.
    I did fix it!
    You need to disassemble the grinder by removing wheel with grinding level (numbers) and pull up another big gear like part and clean under. There is markings on the wheels so you put it back right way and everything works fine. Issue occurred on long term when we grind coffee and coffee dust start building under the stationary wheel and start pushing closer and closer so coffee grind start being finer and finer.

    My Breville 870XL (purchased 2013) was finicky. My unit’s grind fineness/coarseness knob had to be set very low (fine) and my grind amount knob had to be set very low (not that the amount was low - the knob wasn’t well calibrated). If I wanted good espresso could never touch these knobs. I could tell if I was going to get a wonderful or dud espresso just by watching the pressure gauge during extraction. Thanks for the video.

Your knobs are a mile off from my knobs and any other Breville. Now, the DIGITAL settings ARE calibrated machine to machine. Obviously 205-degree water shouldn’t vary machine to machine. • @The4Crawler
      @The4Crawler  Рік тому +1

      Have not seen that myself. It could be there's coffee grounds under or in the adjusting mechanism that's preventing that adjuster from staying in place. On my (older) machine, there's what feels like a spring loaded detent on the adjustment dial that holds it in place.

      I've never run into that situation. You might try using something like a screwdriver to try and rotate the top burr back and forth and see if that'll free it up enough to remove. I do something similar when I remove mine, see the grinder cleaning video in this playlist. I find I need to rock it back and forth with the bail a number of times until it starts to move. It won't feel like anything is happening at first, but keep turning it back and forth until you feel is start to move. You don't want to use excessive force and break something. Never ran into that exact issue. Make sure you're on the right 1-cup or 2-cup setting as that can affect the grind volume. You might also try unplugging the machine for a few minutes then power it back on and see if that makes any difference. You can always manually stop the grinder by pushing the filter basket back into the switch. Other than that, might contact Breville Support and see if they have any other ideas.

    Today, I was making my second espresso of the day and when I went to grind a double shoot there was loud gear grinding noises.
    I immediately stopped down and did the typical grinder deep clean and found a particularly hard bean stuck between the two burrs.
    And THEN I noticed that the size adjustment wheel was far easier to turn. Looking closer, I can tell that it's no longer raising the outer conical burr assembly, so I'm fairly certain that's what's stripped somehow. I haven't yet done a full tear down to get to those gears. I'm still trying to figure out how to remove the housing properly to expose the internals.

    My Breville's grinder is pouring small and fine amount of coffee even on a larger number on this dial and also cranking the amount of coffee knob to 7 o'clock. You might try the advanced grinder cleaning if you've not already done so:
      ua-cam.com/video/0ZDii493IPY/v-deo.html
      If you have a new model machine, the grinder burrs have an internal adjustment where you can compensate for wear if that's the cause of the fine grind.
      On my older machine, I've noticed the grind getting finer over time, likely due to wear. The cleaning helped to some degree, as the burrs and outlet chute get clogged, the coffee stays in the grinder longer = finer grind. I think it may be possible to play with the shim washer thickness under the one burr to make small changes to the grind, but I've not looked into that in detail.

      The clicking sound on my machine (2014 vintage) comes from the knob you turn to adjust the grinder. It's not coming from the grinder itself, more like a spring loaded detent in the knob itself as you hit each number. With the grinder burrs removed:
      ua-cam.com/video/0ZDii493IPY/v-deo.html
      you should be able to get a good look at how the parts work and likely what is wrong.
      Not much to it, just the numbered wheel with some gear teeth on it and matting gear teeth on the round part of the grinder head. That part has a coarse thread that moves it up and down as you turn the wheel.
      I would suspect that either the gear teeth are not aligned or the gear on the numbered wheel is either slipping or broken.

    • @The4Crawler
      @The4Crawler  5 років тому +1

      I've noticed that's usually a sign the grinder needs cleaning. Reason being that as the outlet of the grinder gets packed up with fine powder and oils, it both closes up the gap between the burrs and it's harder for the newly ground coffee to exit. Thus, it stays in the grinder longer and gets ground finer before it finally makes it out to the filter basket.
      Try the advanced cleaning option:
      ua-cam.com/video/0ZDii493IPY/v-deo.html
      or at least some uncooked white rice or grinder cleaning tablets:
      ua-cam.com/video/iriaqWpfO6s/v-deo.html
      and see if that helps.
      If not, you may need to adjust the grinder burrs for wear, the newer machines have some sort of micro-adjustment with one of the burrs for this.

      It sounds like something hard may be stuck inside the grinder. I would empty the hopper, unlock and remove it then follow the advanved grinder cleaning steps:

    Yes, I push it and it clicks, but I guess no power

      Then it's likely the wiring connection to the switch that is the issue. Pull off the grinder and the top cover and have a look inside at the wiring that connects to that switch.
