  • Did your Breville smart grinder pro or Barista series espresso machine bite the dust? This video shows you how to replace the main drive gear inside the gearbox. I tried grinding some really small beans in mine one day. The motor quickly loaded and shortly after stripped the gear inside the gearbox. It makes an awful gear-skipping/grinding noise and the burr was completely stuck while the motor spun freely. Breville does not sell a replacement gear, rendering your expensive and otherwise perfectly good grinder totally useless. I decided to reverse engineer the original gear and have designed an improved, 3D-printed replacement that is available for sale on my Etsy store (link below).
    This gear works for my Smart Grinder Pro (BCG820BSSXL) however I have heard that this same gear is also used in the Barista series espresso machine (like the 860XL). I would recommend disassembling your machine first, identifying the stripped gear, and then seeing if it matches the gear shown in the video or photos on my Etsy site.
    I hope this video helps you save your machine and get back to grinding!
    Replacement gear can be found here:

    Great video and very informative. I Just needed some clarification on one part of the video. When you were inserting the small gear shaft into the gearbox, you demonstrated that there was a short end and a long end and that the short end goes down first into the black box with the long portion facing upward. However, in the video, you inserted the long portion of the shaft first with the short portion facing up. (between 19:03-19:10) I did order your replacement gear and looking forward to repairing my machine. Thank you so much for your product and your video.

    Great video! My issue was that two bearings in the other gear had gotten misaligned, resetting that shaft helped me in case someone else has the same issue.

    Thanks for this. On the final pro tip, you can also super glue the washers to the screws instead.

    Cannot stress enough how helpful this video was. I stripped the machine and bought your part because the teeth on mine were *slightly* torn. After replacing it I quickly learned that the problem was actually on the other gear. The plastic holes that support the metal balls and strings has broken off so the balls always come off their socket and my grinder spins freely. Any chance you also sell the replacement for the bigger part with the shaft?

    Could not find a screwdriver thin and long enough to remove 2nd set of 4 screws. Had to return the gears back to makeSURFmake. He was very easy to deal with. He suggested a really long screwdriver from HarborFrieght, but I had already sent the grinder back to Breville for a repair estimate.

    Great video. One question... For the limiter/clutch shaft assembly, is there any specific torque or you just screw it hand tightened? Mine gets loose every week, lol

    Great video! One question: how much play can the burr shaft have? Mine does wobble quite a bit sideways and the inner burr can move up and down a bit. Is this normal?

    Great video, thanks. I came across it only after taking apart my BBE grinder and finding the striped gear teeth.. Do you know what the diameter is of the ball bearings? I lost one when disassembling to troubleshoot.
    Also it’s worth noting that the nut holding the slip clutch assembly has red Loctite on it (at least for my machine). It’d likely need that again if it was unscrewed. I’m also wondering if having it slightly less tight would help it disengage when it’s supposed to. I wouldn’t be surprised if differences in torquing that screw between machines is what causes some to fail.

    the center cylinder in the white gear is really loose in my expresso machine, the stucture of the grind motor is almost the same as yours ( I think), When I tried to deep clean the grinder, the entire center cyilder just came off earily ( to my understanding it should never come off when you are just removing the inner burr), Do you have any recommendation how to fix it? Thank you so much! your video is the only one I have found so far would go over all the gear in depth !

    Nice job! Can you design something to get in between grind sizes for espresso?
    I think there is a real demand for that. One weakness of this grinder is large gap between grind sizes for espresso

  • @makeSURFmake
    @makeSURFmake  Рік тому

    Cool idea. I will look into it. The grind setting mechanism is pretty well integrated across the machine so getting more precision would likely require some significant mods. In the meantime, have you tried adjusting the setting on the burr holder itself to operate in a finer range?

    • @igb00001
      @igb00001 Рік тому

      I did try that. But depending on the beans sometimes the gap between grind sizes is too large. I searched online and a lot of people report the same issue. It is an amazing grinder for the price. I get great, consistent results with purging a few grams between shots and wtd. The gaps between grind sizes make it difficult to use for espresso. It would be nice to have a mod only for espresso. To make the last 15 grind sizes into 60 on the screen.

    How tight should the bottom nut be on the shaft? Finger tight or not going to come off ever again tight!

    I've learnt a very important lesson - don't buy grinders with cheap plastic gears 😅. Mine survived almost 5 years, which is ok I guess. But this time I'll get a better one without a bunch of bs smart features and simpler mechanisms.

    Hi. I have stripped down, replaced the gear, checked the motor spindle - all ok, checked the white wheels, they move freely. But when i connect the two up the burr will not move. It is stuck solid. Can't figure out why this won't turn manually. I don't want to try with the motor as it will probably strip the new wheel out again. Any thoughts?

    • @makeSURFmake
      @makeSURFmake  8 місяців тому

      Hi Charlie. Did you replace the gear because it was stripped?
      Due to the large gear reduction in the gearbox, it is normal to not be able to rotate the burr. If you try to rotate the input side of the gearbox it should rotate freely.

      Hi there. Thanks for the reply. Yes the small white wheel was partially stripped. Not a massive amount, but enough to stop it turning the main wheel. I have two grinders (caffeine and non-caff). The non-caff one somehow stopped.I took it apart and some of the gear wheel was stripped, as mentioned. I had someone local to me scan and print a replacement wheel and fitted it. It's a test print so not the finished article. Final one will probably be made of copolyester. However, I still couldn't manually turn the burrs. On my other machine I can. It is a bit stiff but they do turn smoothly. On the non-caff it is very clunky. Sometimes it turns, sometimes it is locked solid. However, after your response I thought I'd give it a try. It actually works. Not sure if it will strip out the wheel in time but it does go. Any thoughts on why on one grinder I can manually turn the burrs but on the other it is stiff and clunky? @@makeSURFmake

      Hi. It’s possible that there may be small abnormalities in the new gear? They mesh fairly tightly and are difficult to replicate due to the small helical pinion on the motor.
      I sell 3d printed replacements on my Etsy shop that have a slightly wider contact patch and made from a high end, wear resistant nylon. There are over a 100 of these in use and I haven’t had any reported failures yet. My shop is currently closed for Christmas but I will open it up again next week. I hope this helps.
