A friend lent me this album when I was 17. Had no interest in heavy metal music but hearing this album and particularly this song, I was hooked. Since learning to play the guitar I’ve learned to appreciate the guitar playing skills in this. I’ve since heard various other versions, but this is outright the best for me.
Shouldn’t need a spreadsheet, play them both again back to back and just go with your emotions. Then listen to the studio original version and be amazed how they came up with this. The other song that got me hooked was Stargazer and Gates of Babylon

It's definitely the best version of one of my favorite arangments.. To me anyway. Ritchie and Dio in their prime. Cozy Powell. High-end musicianship. I appreciate you visiting these unappreciated tracks. Ritchie never played the same thing the same way twice. Top shelf improv and and high end sophistication. Good metal.

Maybe for context this live version of Catch the Rainbow was recorded in 1976 and released in 1977 on the album Rainbow On Stage.
The next time I heard another version of Catch the Rainbow was in 1990 when Live in Germany 76 was released.
It was not until 2007 when historical footage of the Germany live shows of 1976/77 was released that anyone had seen a live video of Dio singing Catch the Rainbow …
Note how long this material was sat on before it was released …

    @Sohum -
What a truly awesome reaction! So glad you did this and I also believe they are almost on par with each other - but the winner for me is always the “On Stage” track due to the Bach intro, the overall clarity and particularly that re-entry you mentioned, which is truly spine-tingling! For me - and the section following - one of the best moments ever in Rock! Shame you missed the ending too, which is truly beautiful (as the track usually finishes with the Rainbow’s fade out ending exactly on Ritchie’s last note!)
However, I found your diagnosis very interesting on the 1st track, yes the video helps, but one thing you're probably unaware of, amazingly characterised in your comments:
“Ritchie was unleashed a little bit more” … “Ritchie’s playing was more emotional” … "Ritchie's playing was a little more muddled" .........
explained in full here:- A quick listen to his tour manager of actual events just before the Munich show ….

YOU are HOOKED. Rainbow is addictive. I listen to it daily. Sometime listen to the studio version since it is a different vib and relaxing. Definitely you should listen, it's great.

Ritchie always loves to tease the audience. He loves to stretch out songs and give himself some space to improvise. Every performance is unique. Have you checked out The California Jam show? He literally destroys 2 guitars, a very expensive TV camera, and sets his Marshall amps on fire. It explodes and bursts into flame. Then he throws it and the guitar into the audience.

I prefer the Munich version. Maybe the visuals help but I think the performance is a little more intense. I think the performances selected for On Stage were those which best showcased the vocals, and Dio produces possibly the finest set of rock vocals presented on an album. He's absolutely at his peak, Still I'm Sad being the best of them. I don't know how many live versions of this song have been officially released: at least another six off the top of my head, and all have something different. I like the one from Donington in 1980 which shows how much Ritchie's approach to guitar was changing during that period.

On a different note, Love the On Stage album but also in my books Live in Germany 76 is one of the best/greatest live rock guitar albums ever released and it has Stargazer with an absolutely vicious guitar solo with the Blackmore Snake Charmer Scale on full display

@ very true and that is the enjoyment of listening to live Blackmore material. Every version of the same tune goes off in different directions and many wonderful surprises. Plus studio Blackmore and live on stage Blackmore are two different beasts ….always enjoyed the studio material and then the anticipation of what it would sound like live …

Big difference is in the bass and keys spots, as these were different players than in Munich version. That is why it feels a bit different.

Rainbow with Dio were intense. Blew every hard rocker's mind when I grew up. I unfortunately saw them live just after Dio left....thankful I had a good buzz, not their best work.

    Great review.
I think one difference for you as well was the visual which you don’t have with this version. But you could also give a listen to the version from Live in Germany 76.
I often go back and forth between these two versions ..and LIG76 is a monster as well plus Catch the Rainbow the reason God invented the Strat 🙂🎸

Suggestions as a. long time Deep Purple/Rainbow fan....Man on the Siver Mountain (Rainbow), Rat Bat Blue, Super Trooper, Smoke on the Water , Highway Star, Strange kind of Woman lMade in Japan live). As a 70's rocker fan these are all really good songs.

Having heard the On Stage versions for years I prefer the Munich version that became available much later. It is more adventurous and Ritchie being even more Richie. Then you or at least I want it to go on forever.
