    I really enjoy the honest comments you make regarding your orchids. It's really realistic for orchid growers to appreciate the failures as well as the successes of orchid culture. It is a thrill to have an orchid produce a spike and you demonstrate this to your global audience. Thank you from Australia.

    ABOUT THOSE ANTS...: I'm afraid you will be bringing them along with you when you move. I have about 75 small orchids in a 1m x 2m space, plus some hanging trays and baskets. I was getting ants annually, and found they were probably nesting in some of the bark pots, if not from the office building I am in too. Finally, I got some any traps that contain a sterilization chemical in an enclosed little box that the ants enter, then take back to the nest. Over the past 2 years, this seems to work like magic. Being in an enclosed container, they will not pose a hazard to pets.
    I am in Chicago. If you do not have such chemical traps where you live, please reply below, and I'd be happy to send some to you. There shouldn't be any import issues, and they're lightweight. LMK. And if they ARE available where you live, get some before you move, and use them in your new home too. Good luck with the ants, and the move. (I hate moving)

    Hi Danni! That view of all your phals! So stunning! Thank you for the neofineta and Habenaria update. I’ve tried Habenarias twice and killed both times 😫. I had a similar experience with my masdavalias as your neo. I always read they were low light and I had amazing growth but no blooms. Moved them to bright light and suddenly tons of blooms.
    Also, ant story was funny/not funny. I am also sensitive to insect bites and one time I got stung multiple times on my “chest” by an assassin bug and it was the worst insect bite I’ve ever had! Itched and burned equally bad at the same time. Another time I was stung on my “chest” repeatedly by a yellow jacket at a park with my students. So trying not to scream and scare them I pulled my shirt away from my body and was watching this thing repeatedly stabbing my shirt. I had an allergic reaction and on the way home I got lost and could not figure out where I was because I had spaced out. It was so scary because I just couldn’t remember where I had driven! This of course was before cell phones with gps.
    I highly recommend the ant baits that others have mentioned. They are pet and child safe but the ants take the bait back to the colony and the whole colony is treated with zero spraying. They work really well for me. I have found that ants really like to make colonies in orchid pots because they are fairly dry. The other issue is they farm pests like aphids, scale and mealy bugs for their sugary secretions. So you definitely don’t want to take the ants with you.

    Feeling you on the ants Danny here in southern Oregon. The best thing I've found to use against them is Orange oil based cleaners, the real ones made with real citrus peel. I use one called Citrasolve and it stops anst stone cold in their tracks but not to be sprayed on plants though. Best of luck with the move.

    I also had a Tolumnia hybrid and it grew multiple lines of growth but when it bloomed constantly without stopping, the whole plant got really weak and i tried saving her but the excess water i tried applying devastated the root system 😭😊

    I feel like an orchid killer when it comes to phals lol. I think my environment has a lot to do with it, but we just don't get along. I've come to terms with it. Occasionally I'll decide to give them a try again and just enjoy them until they die lol. Dendrobiums are my jam. They love my environment and care. Oncidium types and catasetums do well for me too...Really just about anything but a phal 😅

    Hello Danny,
    thank you for the wonderful content. I recently started collecting orchids, partly because of your videos, and I was wondering what species you would include in your collection in order to have at least one species in bloom during the year. I’m not sure if you have made a video about it, but if not, I think this could be a great topic for you to talk about. Thanks!

    I have occasionally “accidentally” found just the right conditions to help a plant not only survive, but thrive. When you see them thriving, write down all the things you did and when it seemed to change from dying to surviving and/or surviving to thriving. Then practice replicating the conditions of THRIVING. ❤

    I think Variegated plants need more light. I'm guessing that must be true for orchids as well. Since you moved to a position of more light, I think you found its sweet spot. Sometimes , that's all it takes is a brighter location.

    I live in Florida and we have lots of ants and bugs here and I completely understand hating them, especially the fire ants which are really horrible and so painful when they bit you, always look forward to your videos, I am new to orchid growing and learning as I am going, just cut off the flower spikes of my Planenopsis orchid, it is so hot here and the blooms started dropping, hopefully by watching your videos I can keep them alive.

    Can you get any stakes in Cypress? They’re called Grants 🐜 Ants. They draw them in, they eat the syrup and take it back to their home. Then they all die.

    While I was watching your video I thought you are literally telling us what you need to do to become a better habeneraia grower and you don’t seem to recognize it. Then you showed the “plot twist.” Yes, you were too impatient! 🥴😆 You kept watering until you could see growth above the spaghum moss without disturbing it, Then (and only then) repotted it. But you “assumed” the same thing was happening to the other corm at the same time with no other evidence than it’s 1/2 of the same plant broken and repotted at the same time. But there is nothing to say that two halves of the same plant must behave exactly the same! 🤪😂 so write down what you did for next time. You are learning and sharing this helps all of us learn- not only what to do or not do with this specific type of plant, but what to look for as we go about doing things. Thanks for sharing!! 😁👍☮️

    I've moved my Tolmunia around a bit over the years, and I think it tends to grow a shorter flower spike when it grows closer to the window or grow light, and a longer one when I put it further away from the light source. Does anybody else observe that too in their Tolumnias?

    My 9-year-old mini phal (but it's big lol) has stopped growing. She just lost her last spike that only had three flowers, no new roots or leaves to be seen. Can pests do this? I can't seem to help her thrive anymore 🥺

    • @suzisaintjames
      @suzisaintjames 13 днів тому +2

      Have you checked the roots in the pot recently? You might have lost the ones in the pot even though the ones above the media are good.
      The other thing that might make this happen is old rotten media. Orchids like a certain pH and when media breaks down, it changes to pH that orchids don't like. If the media has a smell, it definitely needs changing. 💖🌞🌵😷

    • @stephirothd7651
      @stephirothd7651 13 днів тому +1

      @@suzisaintjames thank you, she probably is due for a repotting ❤️

    • @suzisaintjames
      @suzisaintjames 13 днів тому +2

      @@stephirothd7651 , truth is: even though I have quite a green thumb, I'm new to orchids, but I understand not much growth happens as most of the plant's energy goes to the flowers. That's why Danny always says that if you are concerned about the plant, cut the spike off... It's a consumer of energy. But I'm thinking that because your's only has a few blooms this year that something is going on under the media.
      It could be pests but changing the media and spraying the roots with peroxide would be the first step to take care of pests too. 💖🌞🌵😷

    I have a question so I have succulents that do very well on my shelf there infront of the window and get medium to high sun but because I live in the uk at night I do sometimes get moisture on the windows and etc if I got a orchid would that environment be okay for it?

    • @suzisaintjames
      @suzisaintjames 13 днів тому

      I'd monitor the temperature there by setting a thermometer in a glass where you'll keep the orchid (as you want the temperature of the air, not the shelf). I was surprised the difference between the temperature near the glass and temperature in the middle of the room. Take readings various times of day and night... especially at first light as that's the coldest part of the day.
      If your temperature range (day and night) equals the range of the orchid you want 👍. If it's too cold, that orchid will struggle, look for a type of orchid that is more in your temperature range. Or move the orchid away from the glass at night. Good luck! 💖🌞🌵😷

    I take all lighting suggestions with a grain of salt. Truth is it's a matter of opinion or perspective unless you get actual measurements in lumans. If you grow outside, low light would be the same as bright, indirect light indoors. Because bright light outdoors is full sun. Even when you see full sun on a tag, you don't know if that's all day, or full sun for a couple of hours. Is it full sun in a northern latitude where the sun isn't very strong, or full sun in the desert, where rotating a catus during transplant will cause sun burn and possibly kill it 🌵. 💖🌞🌵😷
