I was at this concert. Yeah I'm old. I live in an agricultural area. We told our parents that we were going to the other ones ranch to help brand the cows. And as there were no phones back then, we figured we were safe. So we went on a 700+ mile (one way) road trip. What a great 3 days! 3 of us were 14, one 15, and the driver 16.
It's Oakland brother, not the South.
I would've been grounded for life! I was16 in 1977.
@HappyValleyDreamin- We didn't get caught. I didn't tell my parents 'til I was much older. Lol I was the 15 year old.
👍😂
Nothing will ever compare to the 70s.
"Homeboy got a snakeskin strap on the top of his hat, these boys dangerous" 🤣 Great reaction!
All those young people in the audience are now either grandparents or arthritic and had knee replacements or dead but will always keep Rockin On🤘
This song is a masterpiece classic, with one of the best solos of all time. RIP to all of the members that left us way too soon.
My dad went to their last ever concert in 1977
@@richardmann4006 what a bittersweet memory for your father.
The piano player was a roadie and the band walked in on him playing this part on the piano....he became part of the band shortly after!
The dude playing keys was a roadie of theirs who happened to be a classically trained pianist
Yup. Billy! The way I heard it, he was at the piano and said "if I played Free Bird on piano, I'd play it like this..." and "a few minutes later..." he was in the band. 🤷😎💪
He's right, you know.
In the south, to this day you can attend a classical music concert and someone will shout out "Freebird"!!!!🤣🤣🤣❤
An embarrassingly hackneyed joke
😆 truth
@@lipby oh tsk tsk
Not just in the South....❤❤❤
And the other 99% of people will suggest black people don't belong. He isn't' wrong to point out how thick the racist undertones were at these concerts.
I was 31 years old when this came out and Yes, those "kids" watching are now in their 60's , 70's and 80's. I'm 78 right now. This is MY music
Great southern rock band from the 60's-80's. It is very sad what happened to this band in losing so many members in a plane crash in 1977. My favorite songs are "Simple Man", "Free Bird" & "Sweet Home Alabama". They had lots of great songs such as "Call Me The Breeze", "Tuesday's Gone", "That Smell", "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew", "What's Your Name", "Saturday Night Special", "Gimme Three Steps" etc.
💯 yeah!
That smell is a song about Gary Rossington guitar player. True story when he was high on the drugs, drinking and pills, he wrecked his car into the oak tree.
Some of those ladies are GRANDMOTHER'S today!
That's why the coolest ppl on the planet are over 60!!!
Lol
Thx 😎👍 Good times at the concert 🎶✌️
The lead vocalist was Ronnie Van Zant he and 3 members of the band and 2 others including the pilot would die in a fiery plane crash in October of 1977. The dark haired guitarist creating the bird chirping was Gary Rossington he died this past year making him the last of the original line up.
No fire. No fuel to burn.
The drummer Artimus Pyle is still with us but he did not join the current band. He has his own band.
Two bands rose from the ashes - .38 Special and Rossington Collins Band.
When my kids were little I told them that free bird was the national anthem
"Jenny from the roof!" Hell yeah brother. If you grew up on this song, then it hit you hard in that scene.
That video answers the age old question "where all the white women at?" (Blazing Saddles) lol
They were at that concert. 🙂
Now that’s funny!
Great reaction. Gosh I wish I could have been at that concert! I think this is one of the greatest guitar solos ever. So sad that so many of them died so tragically. Thank goodness for their great music.
You can't go wrong with SKYNYRD
i was at this concert. It was great!!
This is one f the greatest songs ever written , it brings tears to my eyes because issei t reminds me of fishing with my dad and him taking me to my baseball games .
You should check out Simple Man By skynerd it’s mind blowing lyrically and the thought behind it
Hardest I have laughed in a long time.....and that's coming from a 65 year old ''white guy' from Okla....who is from (and still lives) in the home town of two of the band members. Although the video is a legend as are Lynard Skynard....your humor won me over. Just subscribed....and thank you....looking forward to binging on your vids and seeing what insight you have for us in the future.
Yes, this was the song in Forrest Gump when Jenny was about to jump.
Thank you, thank you. I had no idea what the hell he was talking about when he kept shouting out Jenny on the roof.
I forgot about that! Same here. No idea what he was referencing lol
This solo is considered one of the top two solos of all time the other is Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb
Van Halen's Eruption isnt TOP 5 ?
Top 10 maybe
@@MugnifyRTS
Considered by who? It sounds great, but it's not exactly musically sophisticated--lots of simple arpeggiated chords. And that's ok: rock is supposed to be simple. It's iconic, yes, but there is a LOT of competition.
By who? You? I guess you haven't heard Hendrix- 'machine gun'🤔
Exactly right!
This is truly an amazing band, most of their songs were written in high school, they were turned down by every major label co. Al Kooper from Blood Sweat and Tears heard them playing and liked them, he went to Frank Zappa and they formed the Songs of the South label and signed them, their story is remarkable you mention Ronnie's hat but did you know he never wore shoes or socks while in concert
Frank Zappa? Yeah,, I don't think so.
The orginal Lynyrd Skynyrd, the one you watched, was great on any album, but they were even better live. The great Allen Collins, the one in all white, was the composer of the music to this masterpiece and he's the one to let the bird fly free on the guitar solo.
I saw them not long before the plane crash. Small warehouse venue, hot as hell. They were great and LOUD.
The first part of this song is a southern lullaby. The last part takes your head off. I believe this concert was in CA, but yes, we love our southern rock bands. I had black friends that listened to Lynard Skynard when I was in high school, but maybe that was only in the south.
I got to see Lynyrd Skynyrd a few times but damn that is a performance! Talk about connecting with your audience! It doesn’t get much better than that.
Skynyrd is always fire. Free Bird was one of the most requested songs on the radio in the 70s. You need to check out, They Call Me The Breeze studio version.. I think you'll love it.
The boys from Jacksonville, Florida, are the Southern Rock Gold Standard. They have many great songs from between 1973 and 1977.
Unfortunately, a plane crash just 3 months and 18 days after this show took the lives of Ronnie Van Zant the lead singer, Steve Gaines the guitarist in the red pants, and his sister Cassie Gaines who was one of the 3 ladies who did backup vocals for them.
They reunited in 87 with Ronnie's younger brother brother Johnny on lead vocals. One of the greatest bands ever and live they were incredible.
Thanks for the reaction, and enjoy the ride.
This has been so hard to listen too without tears since the Freebird fell to the ground.
THE guitar solo. This how it was done in the late 60's right through the 80's with stadium rock.
good morning, have an amazing week. Thanks for the good tunes man.
If my memory serves me correct a close friend of mine had tickets to see these guys in concert in Detroit. Sadly their plane crashed shortly before that day. He was crushed and nearly inconsolable. Very sad time for their fans.
Always gives me the creeps when Ronnie says If I leave here tomorrow. Knowing that in about 2-3 months after this show we would lose Ronnie, Steve Gaines (red pants), Steve's sister Cassie Gaines and backup singer, road manager and 2 pilots in the plane crash. 20 others survived but had serious injuries. Ronnie and Cassie were 29, Steve was 28 years old. NOT IN THE SOUTH. !!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY ARE IN OAKLAND CALIFORNIA.
They were opening for Frank Zappa. Frank said if they play Free Bird tomorrow I'm not going on after them
You see somebodie’s “mom” in the audience? Hey, we’re somebodies “grandma” now dude - that was 1977 for shitsake! 45 years ago! I was 18 that summer and my parent’s wouldn’t let me go to concerts. I started college a month after this show and finally had the freedom to go, but they crashed and died a few weeks later. I heard the news in the dorm on Friday night, over the radio. Broke my damn heart.
Yep, I wasn't quite 18 yet, & wasn't allowed to go to concerts. I did get to see the new band, though.
Solo? Solo? That's no solo, that's a trio. But it sure speaks to the unity with which they play, that everybody talks about this being a solo.
There is some solo, some duet, but the most memorable is the trio rocking it out towards the end.
I saw Skynard 3 times. They came to Atlanta 3 years in a row to the Georgia Jams. Twice close to my birthday, once actually on my birthday. Fun times!😅
It’s so nice to see you younger people get turned on to this fabulous music, but if you just knew how much great music was out there your mind would be blown away. I am almost 70 now and I have Been Experienced .
Sadly, thier plane crashed not long after this concert. Singer Ronnie Van Zant was killed instantly. Guitarist Steve Gaines burned to death in front of his sister Cassie Gaines (one of the backup singer girls). She bled to death before help could arrive. This is one of the last live performances with the original line up. The lone surviving member, Guitarist Gary Rossington, just passed away last year or the year before. RIP Lynyrd Skynyrd Band
This was live at the Oakland A’s/Raiders Coliseum. Southern Rock.
Dude the fact that you recognize it from Forrest Gump is awesome
I love your reactions
Love how you want to experience different things and just the over all joy you have for life.
Don’t ever let anyone taint that please
"That's a lot of white people" I'm a white people and I was thinking the same thing. 🤣
A glorious time…
those aren't someone's moms, they're grandmothers by now.
Yes we are 😉
Fun memory, we went to JFK stadium for concert in the 70's 5 bands. We wanted to see Golden Earring and Nazareth. Didn't know Skinnard, well, they came out to the stage in a beat up Volkswagen bus and stole the show‼️ Became a Lenard Skinard FAN that day. They were Fantastic, this song brought down the house 💖
This group was from Jacksonville Florida. Good guys. They welcomed anyone and everyone to their shows
It's almost certainly in the top three guitar solos and there is kind of this holy triumvirate, in my book, but not everybody agrees on the third one, but basically it's Led Zeppelin doing Stairway to Heaven, it's Lynyrd Skynyrd Freebird, and then arguably, Queen doing Bohemian Rhapsody.
That seems to be this three-pillar foundation of what you would think of as the most iconic rock music from America.
Although in my view, you have to throw in there that first Van Halen and first Boston album, some of the greatest debut albums in Rock history.
And I would also include in their the Fleetwood Mac Rumors album, which although it was not a debut album, it happened and it changed the world. It was just the perfect album.
Queen is not from America. 😉
This is one band i wish i could seen live, the original band. Ive saw the today's time Lynard Skynard and they are great. But noone can be like the original though. Enjoyed Mugs 🔥💜 Freebird is a all time top 10 fave for me!
Me, too! We love his little brother because of who he is, but he doesn't have a great singing voice, but the band kind of cleans that up, for him, makes it all work.
My brother always said he wanted this played at his funeral. When he passed suddenly in 2005 my dad said no but Kip's friends and i made it happen. I think of him every time i hear Skynard. It no longer makes me cry, just brings back fond memories.
THEE !!! Guitar Solo to end all !!! Total RESPECT XXX
Is this Jenny on the roof ? Hold on now we in the south ! ❤😂❤😂❤😂
2 to 3 months later after this concert the band was in an airplane crash the singer he died in the plane crash along with three other band members 24 severely injured look up the history of Lynyrd Skynyrd😢😢😢😢❤❤❤
"That's a lot of white people" 😂 Actually its Oakland, which had/has a high African American population. But yes, the band is considered Southern Rock 💜
And no fights or shootings!
No fights or shootings with this many people even with alcohol!
These are Florida boys who named the band as a twisted version of "Leonard Skinner", one of their high school teachers. The rebel flag which is now considered a very racist hate symbol, was more just a representation of Southern pride in those days...however, the very white crowd are Californians (Oakland stadium is the venue) and I dont think this genre had great appeal to our black friends, who were very much more into R&B during that time ( lots of GREAT R&B artists performing at that time, as well) . This was when 70's music was a smorgasbord of amazing bands and artists of every genre, from Led Zeppelin to Marvin Gaye to CCR to Fleetwood Mac. Skynyrd falls squarely into the category of Southern Rock. In '77, I was a high school senior, and Freebird has become an anthem of my generation. Sadly, a couple months after this performance, the band's plane went down and some members died...so the opening lyric "If I leave you tomorrow, would you still remember me?" hits in a particularly emotional way. Loved your reaction and just thought you'd be interested in the context/culture of the performance. And we're now GRANDMAS, btw! Lol
1977 ,yesterday, better concert, backing up the Stones Kenaboth England, fuck the tung😮😢🎉🎉😂❤
There not in the south the band is from Florida ,but the show is in Oakland California.
Yes! It’s Jenny on the Roof!!! 😂
Everybody who reacts to this video, shows it without a problem
This is one of the songs I want played at my funeral
I saw them a few times in New Orleans, they're from Florida, if you're ever coming south on I-55 and south of Magnolia Mississippi 8 miles from Louisiana, there is a brown sign leading you to the monument recently put up for the band very close where the plane crashed on their way to Baton Rouge Louisiana. Only a couple people survived the crash, and the remaining actual band member passed a few months ago. Stop in, bring your lunch, leave a contribution to keep it up.
Some of the best solos ever.
And duets and trios.
We traveled from AZ too CA for this concert.
Yeah you seen someone's mom granny and the great granny.lol
Continuing with that southern rock ride with the two lead guitars would be the Outlaws Green Grass and High Tides.
Have you heard the Eagles
Hotel California yet?
There's a quick shot of our group I am in a cowboy hat. Lol
✌️
🤠🏞️🐂
Mugnify, it was only this year that it hit me like a thunderbolt after hearing this song forever; it had THE BEST guitar solo (3 guitars, actually); after mentally going back and forth for years between Zeppelin and Rolling Stones as to who has the best guitar solo, I have decided neither; it’s Lynard Skynard’s Freebird, straight out of Jacksonville, Florida ❤
Will there ever be anything as great as this again?
This is a CLASSIC!!!!
This right here is the reason people still to this day shout FREEBIRD! At cover bands. But nobody but Skynyrd could ever do it justice.
Love your comments. Great tune so glad you enjoyed it!!!
when the guitar solo first starts and he says 'ok a solo' .. just wait for it lol
At 11:50 " don't pause a guitar solo". Well this is a three guitar solo not just one.
Blow your mind even more to know this concert was in California.
My brother was there. Definitely lots of moms!😂😂😂 They had 3 guitarists. That 3 guitar atrack is Killer!!!!
Ronnie VanZant always sang barefoot also. They were my first concert in April of 1977. I had just turned 17.
Definitely Jenny on the roof!!!
Jenny from the roof… I had to laugh. You said there is someone moms. My babysitter was in the first row clapping her hands. Now we are both grandparents. This concert was in Oakland.
Bro! Loved your reaction! All I need to see was your smile and head banging to know you throughly enjoyed one of the greatest rock anthems ever created. This song had been in my top 2 favs of all time.
You see somebody's grandma in the audience.
😂😂😂 You had me rolling. That IS a bunch of white people. 😂😂 I wonder how many other Brothers thought that watching this seeing that huge Southern Flag. . God bless ya. I always love your reactions. Im sure some of the reddest of necks was there. I know . I would have been there. 😂😂. ✌️❤️ from Ky
Not the South! This was in Oakland California. Much love to ya!
My bad lol
That concert was not being played in the south. It was Oakland, Ca. Lat 37.75 and Long -122.19
Loved your reaction!! I wasn't there but it's my generation and yes, we're grannies now, lol.
Heard this aĺl my life..... FFS How did they do that Guitar drop ???? LIVE !!
RESPECT XXX
Why do I feel like I already know you ,bro ,and was already subbed ??? Eff it ,no biggie , re upped!!
Yes, it was Jenny on the balcony. The studio version was playing.
The whole band is Florida man!
Lol - Yep - that's what your grandparents were listening to and seeing
Music was more divided along racial lines then so probably not. One of the good things about Hip Hop plundering old music for samples is these barriers have dissolved.
That's not mom. That's hot grandma.
This is Jenny on the roof? Took me a hot second to get it, but that’s hilarious!!
Growing up in Jax, OP or Middleburg FL in late 60, 70 80s hard not to love them. ❤❤
Most of them died theee weeks later in a plane crash. This was the last live performance for the entire band.
OMG He is gonna love this. Buckle up mate xx
This Concert Was The Oakland Music Festival 1977
Yes Jenny on the roof!!
Jenny was actually standing on the railing on the balcony and yes it was Freebird playing when she was getting ready to jump.
In the top 10 of all Rock songs ever made
Someone's grandmama in the audience at this point. This was filmed in 77. But for real, this is pretty much the most rock&roll break up song ever. And strangely enough. This isn't the south where they filmed this. This is oakland, CA.
You called it. Definitely a build and climax to this one.
Damm...how good is southern rock.
Best rock song and jam ever.
I'm not really a fan of rock/metal music in my daily life, but I do love me a decent chunk of Zeppelin, a few Sabbath tracks, Tool all morning long every once in a while (wow, genius); and then a wild card out of nowhere: THIS song. My Dad had the album and as a kid I just latched onto it. Fun times when he would tell me to tidy my room, and then deliberately drop this tune on the record player in the dinning room. My little space in the house went from looking like a not yet filled in land fill, to a almost respectable and recognizable pre-teen bedroom. Hyper vibes and uplifting energy.
The irony of listening to the lyrics a little later in life... My Dad telling me to clean my room, and me as the normal rebel teenager... "But Dad, I'm a free bird. Don't clamp my style!" Haha... very good times all around. :)
Edit: 11:20 "Reactor's don't ever pause the guitar solo's!"
In those days north of the Mason Dixon Line "Stairway to Heaven" was the song, south of it was "Free Bird". I wrote this just as you said "there's a lot of white folks" lol, perfect timing.
This concert was in Oakland, California in 1977 lol
Plane crash happened just a few weeks later. Such a tragedy. I was fortunate to see them in 1972 when they were first touring and crowds were smaller but the energy was there.
