such an emotional performance. maybe its because I was thrre I felt it in 1977. when the plan crashed . and now THIS video melts me every time. especially the audience and knowing every member of that band is now deceased .
These young men and women are now your grandfathers and grandmothers and they had a great times that will never happen again because of the way the world has gone downhill as has the music
The band was named after a gym teacher that gave them a hard time for having long hair in high school, his name was Leonard Skinner. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, back-up singer Cassie Gaines(Steve's sister) died in a plane crash 3 months after this performance.
As a long time Jacksonville resident, it is imperative to mention that they were formed right here on the west side of Jacksonville, FL. The coach/gym teacher worked at Robert E Lee High School where a few of the core members attended. Mr. Skinner became a rather successful Realtor after teaching. Great guy and very nice. RIP Coach Skinner. I had the rare opportunity to meet Billy Powell in the fall of 1988. I worked as a server/bus boy at a Japanese Steak House and he came in after we closed. Our manager asked us all to stay for a "special" customer. Before he left he handed everyone of us a $100 bill for working late and tending to him and his wife. A true gentleman indeed. Curious, right after he left, I went to lock the front door and saw him being chauffered away in a white Lincoln Stretch Town Car. Classy - very classy. That memory is burned into my mind forever. I wanted to save that $100 bill, but being a poor college kid, I spent it! LOL.
At this performance, they weren’t the headliners. Most of the people in the crowd were there for Peter Frampton, but they sure got their money’s worth that day!
This is the very best performance of "Free Bird". It shows Billy Powell's classical training on the piano, which is second to none. Also, how the "three guitar army" of Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, and Steve Gaines, can jam together as one, and don't forget Leon Wilkeson (the Mad Hatter) on bass guitar. Driving it down and hard on drums is Artimus Pyle. Singing back-up is The Honkettes, JoJo Billingsly, Cassie Gaines (Steve's sister) and Leslie Hawkins. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant was at the top of his game and never sounded better. They are all gone now with the exception of Artimus who is still rocking with his own band and playing many of Skynyrd's standards. Zoey, love to see a young'un getting the experience of the music many of us grew up with, and seeing the look on your face when they were rockin' their hearts out.
Just a few months after this concert while on route to the next show their plane ran out of fuel and crashed into deep woods of Mississippi. Three band members, lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitar player Steve Gains and his sister back up singer Cassie died in the crash. The two pilots and a band crew member also were killed. I saw them live in July 1974 and again in 1976.
The most amazing thing I have always noticed in this video is the energy of that huge crowd. This concert was on my 19th birthday, and I would have loved to have been there to be a part of that crowd going wild with the feel of this performance. A singular moment in time in a time that will never return.
I had the crazy luck to have been there. Actually back behind the stage in the bleachers. They had turned around two speakers for us.. and we saw it close up.
They were called "Day On The Green" in Oakland. They were a serious marathon all day of heat, partying and music lol.. This day there were.. hmm I think was Outlaws, Santana, Lynyrd, and Peter Frampton. Frampton was tripping at the end.
The sound I presume you are referring to is the slide guitar. The guitarist has a metal tube on his finger which he slides down the frets while he picks the stings. It’s often associated with blues music
Lynyrd Skynyrd is southern rock, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, (Sister) Cassie Gaines, Dean Kilpatrick all gone to soon. October 20, 1977 killed in crash near Gillsburg Mississippi, rest in peace.
We are so lucky to have recordings like this. 'Day On The Green' this was called. One of a series of Stadium Concerts. This one had Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Santana, and the Outlaws. All the girls were there to see Peter Frampton, his 'Frampton Comes Alive' album was huge at the time (1977). This was also about 6 Months before the plane crash that killed Lynyrd Skynyrd's Lead Singer, one of the backup singers and her brother who was one of the guitar players that anchored the band. Most of the other members were severely hurt. The piano player Billy survived but was severely injured, I always loved how he was once a roady for the band, showed them the bit he wrote for this song, next thing ya know, he is in the band. How cool was that?
A rocking song from start to finish by them is "Call Me The Breeze", and a slower but very beautiful song by them is "Tuesday's Gone", I suggest both of them to react to.
I’ve heard several people comment on the “slow “song only to realize shortly after that they were hearing a slow Intro about the equivalent of a burning fuse.
The sound is from the guitar player playing with a slide. Instead of fretting the notes, a slide, in this case a glass one, is used. It gives it that smooth sound.
The original version did not have the piano. The piano player was one of the road crew. He kept telling them he could make the song better. He was made a band member.
The piano player you're referring to is Billy Powell & he most definitely played on the Pronounced debut album of Free Bird. Yes Billy started out as part of the road crew but definitely played on their first album
II found your channel looking for Freebird. I was born in 1964 the last year of the Baby Boomers. I am 59 years old and I am glad I grew up in a golden age of Music in the 60's and 70;'s and 80's
This was my first concert, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Peter Frampton, The Outlaws, and Santana, I was 13 yrs old, my mother and one of her boyfriends took me and one of my friends to the show, I've seen more bands than I can remember of since then, but this was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird ....This was on 7/2/1977 in Oakland... I saw them on 8/27/1977 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim... the plane crash was on 10/20/1977... lead vocalist and founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, Pilot McCreary and Co-Pilot John Gray all died as a result of the crash. The details are on the internet....RIP. Steve you don't see much of until the end . He has a beard. Cassie you don't see at all
I had a smile from one ear to the other when you said about it being slow.... I thought, 'wait until it gets going'..... and hey, you had a bit of a surprise didn't you? 😄 Loved your reaction Zoey!
On October 20, 1977, a Convair CV-240 passenger aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed in a wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi, United States. Chartered by the rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd from L & J Company of Addison, Texas, it was flying from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, crashing near its destination. Lynyrd Skynyrd lead vocalist and founding member Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (Steve's older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, Captain Walter McCreary, and First Officer William John Gray all died as a result of the crash, while twenty others survived.

A lot of Rock/metal bands do long intros and/or outros when doing some songs live as when they are live they can extend the songs over what is acceptable for radio. I think it depends also on the audience and whether they can keep the attention of the audience during the extended play.
Unfortunately in October of the same year the plane that was carrying the band crashed killing three of the members and seriously hurting the rest of them. They did regroup and are still performing today.
Lynyrd Skynyrd Freebird... I saw them at Angel stadium. I was on one of the upper decks and thought it was going to fall. It was moving to the beat, they had it bouncing up and down 3 to 6 feet. A little scary. Anaheim is next to Los Angeles which is known by Truckers as "Shaky Town" so it is meant to be able to flex with earthquakes. .

I snickered when said it was a slow song.😂 Always gives me the creeps when Ronnie says If I leave here tomorrow would you still remember me, knowing that in about 2-3 months after this performance we would lose Ronnie (lead singer) Steve Gaines (red pants), his sister Cassie (backup singer) road manager and 2 pilots in a plane crash. 20 others survived but had serious injuries. 10 years after the crash Johnny Van Zant and Gary Rossington restarted the band. Saw them last year and gonna see them again in 2 weeks.
I suggest to you two other classics with jamming guitar solos, Dire Straits Sultans Of Swing (Alchemy Live) and Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood (Live at the El Mocambo)!
Ram Jam - "Black Betty" - Mountain "Mississippi Queen" - Foghat - "I Just Wanna Make Love to You" - AC/DC at River Plate "Thunderstruck" - Molly Hatchet - "Flirtin' With Disaster" - Stevie Ray Vaughan Live at the El Mocambo - "Texas Flood" - Ted Nugent - "Stranglehold" Blackfoot "Train Train" --- if you have not reacted to any of those songs, all of them are bangers.
May I suggest the greatest music documentary, Muscle Shoals, which is about the studio that Rick Hall built and staffed with young, local musicians who became The Swampers. It's a documentary thick with poetry. There's a section about the formation of Skynyrd. Aretha Franklin made her first and best hits with Hall and The Swampers. Etta James, Percy Sledge and MANY others made hundreds of hits of the 60s and 70s. It might change the way you think about music. At least check out the trailer.
Skynyrd?? Killer band! Check out: Sweet Home Alabama, studio version. Gimme Three Steps, studio version and yes, it's a true story. Mr. Banker, studio version. Those 3 plus what you saw here will give you a good overview of their work.
Now, that's an encore. Not many, if any, did it better. The boys from Jacksonville, Florida. It is considered Southern Rock. Here are a few to check out Gimme Back My Bullets The Needle And The Spoon Sweet Home Alabama Just for starters. And there are plenty more. Great reaction, and Thank you.
Kids, that's your MeeMaw sitting on your Papaw's shoulders looong before your Mom or Dad were even a glint in their eyes. They were enjoying arguably the best era of rock in history. I'm glad you are experiencing it now Zoey. Oh, and everyone in the stadium knew that the pace was going to pick up at that part of the song and they started going crazy.
People go on about the guitar outro by primarily Collins and Gaines. I contend that the slide guitar work by Gary Rossington makes this song what it is.
Great reaction to a great song. If you want hard rock from my age group, my choice has ALWAYS been, Black Sabbath. They tell good stories with a dark rock sound. I like all of their songs, but just a couple of suggestions; Ironman, Sweetleaf, War Pigs.
You can still buy replicas ,I have a Derick Trucks model. As close as you can come to original . You have to hold it vertical and slide the opening of the bottle on the 1st & 2 strings beyond the frets to get the bird chirp sound . It's prettty easy !
Not long after this concert there was an accident with the plane they were using to get to their other concerts. Not all of the band members died in the crash. The lead singer and I believe 2 others did not survive the crash. The other members aboard did survive, but with some having very serious injuries. I am certain there are many more people watching this that have a better recollection of the specifics. I just happened to mention it because it was not long after they recorded, released, and started playing it at concerts when the accident happen. The words to this song mean so much more.
3 guitar's, a bass player, a drummer and a keyboard player in PERFECT sink, you're not gonna find a performance any better then this one...!!
Aaaww thank you @Zoey Zo 🥰
They're playing in a sink? 😅

You can still buy replicas ,I have a Derick Trucks model. As close as you can come to original . You have to hold it vertical and slide the opening of the bottle on the 1st & 2 strings beyond the frets to get the bird chirp sound . It's prettty easy !
Gimmee Three Steps should be your next Lynerd Skynerd song.
Listen to Call Me the Breeze
Not long after this concert there was an accident with the plane they were using to get to their other concerts.
Not all of the band members died in the crash. The lead singer and I believe 2 others did not survive the crash. The other members aboard did survive, but with some having very serious injuries.
I am certain there are many more people watching this that have a better recollection of the specifics.
I just happened to mention it because it was not long after they recorded, released, and started playing it at concerts when the accident happen. The words to this song mean so much more.
😢that's some bad news . RIP
I seen Lynyrd Skynyrd 8 times
