  • In today's video, I'll be showing you how to lengthen or shorten the pants legs of a sewing pattern. This is a simple but very common pattern adjustment. I'll demonstrate how to make the pattern adjustment to tapered and flare style pant legs and explain why you don't want to just adjust at the hem.
Side note: How much you adjust the length will depend on the pattern, your personal measurements and personal preference. In this video, we'll focus on how to make the adjustment properly. An easy way to find the length you want is to compare the pattern to a pair of pants that you like.

I have enjoyed doing your approach on a pant pattern with 2 leg patter pieces, however, I have not seen anything on You Tube showing how to do this on a ONE PIECE pant pattern. Can you help. Thank you.

Would you mind doing a video on how to adjust a pants pattern for easing (or whatnot) and how to tell where to ease? For example, you've made a muslin and the side seam curves forward by the hip instead of running straight down. Or for when the leg of the pants tends to run outward (or inward) and your leg doesn't come out the center of the hem.

Hi Lara, Thanks for the idea! I will add it to the list. In the meantime, you might want to look for the book "Fast Fit: Easy Pattern Alterations for Every Figure" by Sandra Betzina. I think it's a great fitting book. I suspect you might need to do a full seat adjustment. You'll want to add more fabric to the seat and that will allow the side seam to hang straight. Sometimes, twisting pant legs is due to the fabric not being cut on the grainline. So, that's an entirely different issue.

So if you needed to shorten the pants by 1" would you do a 1/2" on the top piece and a 1/2" on the bottom piece?

Is this how you can lengthen a crouch too?
