Big Citroens have in the past been "design icons". Always flawed but, mainly forgiven because of their stunning good looks. This DS9 imo does not have the looks to distract, so only the flaws are left.
Sadly, but yes. Clearly Asian market oriented design... No big surprise French president does not use it... This is some kind of Lexus to me - I mean ugly design, lines with no purpose, etc
Just like the previous C6, that car was delayed (financial and industrial troubles) for quite some time .... and obviously the DS4 is the real flagship of DS line-up.
Love your reviews. The style is great and you highlight details that most other reviewers miss. I like the DS9, but in the company it is designed to keep, it is overpriced, in my opinion.
As I can see, every time when you are testing french car, it is obviously that you do not like it. It is so clear. But you cannot say it is bad car when we are talking about ds9. Pure luxury
History - is constant changing: 2010 European middle class car manufacturer workers making luxury cars for rich Chinese people.... 2020 ....Chinese low budget worker making luxury cars for the European car companies... ... 2030 European poor workers making luxury cars for rich and middle class Chinese people 2010 making luxury cars = the luxury brands making luxury cars with nice materials and at least some really new (electronic) functions (that work at least okayish) 2017 avarage car brands became so jealous about the profit margin that they decided to produce also a lot of luxury cars, adding a lot of piano black and many screens 2021 avarage car brands are happy about the customers and say: we just call most of our cars luxury cars and make shiny brochures, where plastic looks nice and write, that the shopping hook in the trunk is a special feature. (2 exceptions: VW does this already for many years and Tesla is doing different: saying we are upper class but simply don't producing upper level quality)

Informative video about an interesting car. As you mentioned the C6, this was a car which (at the time of its' launch) was a very different car. At the time of the C6 launch, this was a car which really stood out from the equivalent BMW, Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes cars. As you say, the DS9 is just a collection of old bits from the Citroen parts bin. If I had the amount of money required to buy this type of car, I would go for a Jaguar or a Mercedes or BMW or maybe a Lexus.
here`s a thought on how to attact sales in europe for upscale french cars- i`m talking to you, Renault and Citroen: bring back the STATION WAGON- like in the XM...i know, not popular in asia, but for europe it would be a perfect niche market...think 7 series BMW station wagon at a substantially lower price- with same amenities...i`d take that over ANY gnarly SUV in a heartbeat- and i know, lots of germans feel the same... cheers from germany.

Agreed, the DS9 was supposed to be launched in 2020 but postponed because of the pandemic and it shows…I heard that the DS9 should get the new infotainment of the DS4 at the end of the year so we’ll see.
The post-pandemic world is looking for luxury that's simple and straightforward. Practical and unpretentious. And definitely quirk-free. And if you consider these points carefully enough... even a fully-trimmed Skoda Octavia is more luxurious than a DS 9.
DS 9 is a "transition car" from "Citroen DS" into "stand-alone DS", that was planned to be presented in late 2018!!! ...and as a model of a newly formed brand that (at the time especially) sorely needed new models, but didn't have the luxury to be "out there" by design or by used technology, it was bound to have a bunch of compromises! this simple fact is obvious to every car enthusiast, if not sooner, then at latest by sight of DS 4! and a professional car tester should understand that and judge the car accordingly. this does not mean that its flaws should be overlooked, but it would put them into slightly different perspective!

DS7? ...closely related with similar "problems", similar compromises and with similar, generically dull design, with (as in case of DS 9), few design details to try not to make it so obvious! and if years of delaying do have some impact on its design, then I would say that they make it "dated", not "duller"... 😉

Currently everything Citroen makes is a crossover, including the C5X. I guess the DS9 is their limousine, and if you want a sedan style car you buy a Peugeot 508.

I love the review, but I can't say the same about the car. Two words should end most discussions on this matter - Skoda Superb. I'm probably as far from a fan of the multinational automotive manufacturing corporation headquartered in Wolfsburg as you can get, but I am objective.

That bonnet strip makes it look like one of those medieval helmets with the nose guard. I'm sure it would be very entertaining until one of those rotating lights went wrong (or the handles stop popping out when they should, or my passenger's coffee pops out when it shouldn't)! But .... French .... quirky .... cool. I found the C6 to be a more cohesive design, though.
Absolutely love how the car looks, but they gave the most boring combination possible for a press car. The dullest deep blue with all grey and black interior.

Looks too much like a 508. The design foibles that you mentioned will also become annoying over time. Still can’t see this model selling in big numbers here in the UK. Shame as I love big Citroens.
Unlike most big PSA cars we've had over the decades, the DS9 feels a bit half-assed. Judging by the comments I'm probably not the only one that feels this way. Such a shame what they did to the DS brand.
A bit late but what a superb review again. The DS9 is a big pretender It promises every thing but almost nothing comes true. I would rather go for a fully loaded Citroën C5X which IImho looks much more elegant.
i wonder where french a-segment would be these days, if their governemnt wouldn`t have regulated the market by hyper-taxing anything with a +3 litre engine back in the early 70`s....they basically waved the white flag to german competition without a fight...
DS has lost its way. The car has none of the grace of the original or the sci-fi feel of my beloved Cx. It’s just more Citroen corporate engineering crap. The lines are dumpy, the details over styled. There is nothing about the Citroen/DS lineup that justifies spending any money on, let alone the premium DS prices.
Design wise modern french cars are ok, but quality is very low. I drove some new Peugeots and Citroens not so long ago and I was very dissapointed by the build quality and the driving experience in general.
Rear doors are made, so that old and weak people can close the doors with ease. Not like in Ze Zerman's, where it takes eight weeks of training in a camp to build strengh. That aside, I would never choose any DS ! Except the original, that showed intelligence.
C6 looked like french car. This DS9 looks like half german half korean. I don't want french Genesis. I want french XM/SM version but in 2022 version. Until Citroen is owned 1/2 china 1/2 peugeot we won't see any good "voitures" soon. It is really sad. World's been wated decades for new flagman and get this crap.
A Citroen with a fancy frock. I will never buy French again after having four. Christ they lose so much value so quick. Yet very comfortable and economical cars. Shame DS are not what they are supposed to be.
This fails miserably at what Citroen is good at: ergonomics and keeping it simple in terms of number of buttons. As James May once said, true luxury is not about how many buttons and gadgets you have, it is about everything being easy to operate and automated. Furthermore, the car doesn't seem to stand out from the crowd that much... And I really hate all the buttons labeled with letters, not icons. Come on, Citröen! As David Bowie famously said "This is not America". I guess it is a good thing I can't afford this.... But even if I could, I would go for a C5X. And before some says it, yes, I am fully aware it is a DS and DS is no more part of Citröen but I couldn't care less, it has the heritage of the DS, it is a Citröen.
Imagine how much those twisting headlamps will cost to repair/replace after they (of course it’s a French car) stop working in a few years. Probably upwards of part of the cars total worth.
@Daniel H they say that if you have to ask for the price, you clearly can't afford it. It's not the first owner's problem. Their problem may be the depreciation hit they will take on this car, but this is the case with most premium vehicles.
Daniel H probably not that much... French car parts are never that expensive and I must say, I have driven a lot of French cars and everything was working just fine after 20 years... Rattles and squeeks? Yes, sure. Things not working? Not really.
Funny, my old 2 grand Ford Fiesta has a heated windshield, and that covers the whole thing, not just the edges. And the cup holder? I think people at Citroen aren't taking their job seriously enough. And then we have the Chinese component on top of that...
I don't get this DS at all... It looks like a giant kitsch. Or a prop for a thick parody. Sorry... (By the way, the first time I saw a DS I thought that someone had vandalized its emblem. I must be getting very old...)
OMG, that chrome strip is sooooooo 1970s!!! My grandfather had a car that was 35 feet long that had a long chrome strip back in the day. I swear to god, every car manufacturer needs a "that's too much design" dept. And before every car design gets the stamp of approval it goes to this dept and they cut out 50% of the superfluous and excessive design cues. They simply have frowny face stickers to indicate what needs to be cut out. :(. LOL. Thanks for the fun and informative video Marek. And Merry Christmas!

I think it's aimed more at the Chinese market, and selling it in Europe is only to make it more appealing to the Chinese.

DS actually refers to it as a spade or sword, so you're on the right track :-)

@marek in my opinion you should had mentioned that this DS9 is in fact a Peugeot 508L , along with the mention of the chinese DS6.
I have no experience with the 508L/DS6, so the best reference I've got for my European viewers is the C6.

@@MarekDrives we are having bizarre weather. 3 days ago it was 14 degrees, then it dropped to -1 and we had snow, and now it’s 5 and it’s all melting. LOL.
