The Tudors; JRM talks about Katherine Parr

- For some reason, neither me nor Natalie can manage to upload JRM saying ridiculous things about Kathryn Howard, or Catherine Howard - whatever you want to call her. So instead I give you this: JRM being callous about Katherine Parr, and Anne Boleyn. Oh, and he gives us his learned opinion on the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. TBH I don't think he was in the best of moods when he did this little sit down session, do you?
Oh and a shout out to Chloe!! I think she will find this particularly amusing :)

2:13 “Mary reminds me....er, Mary reminds him of his first wife Cate”. Still in character. Gotta love him.
"He wouldn't have left them with Kathrine Howard, because she was fucking useless."
lmao Johnathan you savage 😂
I second thatXD
He would have left them with anyone pmsl he hardly saw them except at Xmas etc
Proceeds to go on about how strong Catherine Howard is when referring to Cathrine Parr.
🤣
'she wouldn't let them with Kathrine Howard because she's f*cking useless' XD
Poor Katherine Howard! Not even suited to be a nanny. Don't hold John!🤣
But she helped restore his ailing sex drive......and Henry did love her, as much as he was capable of.
Juanita Richards The only ones Henry at any point in his life loved Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. The first two wives are the only ones he truly loved for a point of time. After having two wives with strong personalities, and other characteristics. True queens. Jane he liked, not so called love. The only reason he calls her his great love because she gave him a son and died from child bed fever after a horrible birth, 11 days after while the labor lasted 3 days with all the complications, etc. If she didn’t die, he probably would’ve at some point got sick of her being so “plain”. People called Jane “plain Jane”. She wasn’t innocent like many movies, shows portray her as. Not very educated, knew barely how to read compared to all the skills Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn had and features. Moving onto Anne of Cleves, when he remarried. Which was part of Cromwell’s downfall. He didn’t like her, after their marriage. They did form a type of friendship. Moving onto Katherine Howard. He didn’t truly love her, he was going through a midlife crisis and wanted to feel his youth again definitely with his bad leg, and becoming obese. It was a lust relationship for him as well. Then with Catherine Parr, Catherine Parr didn’t even wanna move him in the first place. She was already thrown into marriages before with men she didn’t wanna be with and step children to take care of. None of her own after Henry died and she married the man she wanted to, but later died in childbirth with a daughter. Henry most likely had respect for Catherine Parr at the time. Just didn’t wanna be totally alone, was seeking for a care taker. Still he was almost going beheaded her as well.
Juanita Richards Katherine Howard was a child, abused sexually at a young age. Sent away from her family after her father remarried. Didn’t have great education, she showed that she did have a side of kindness to her.
"He makes great television, but he doesn't make a great king."
*Anne Boelyn did not like Mary because she was Katherine of Aragon's daughter.
*Katherine Howard and Mary did not get on at all.
*Jane might well have taken care of Elizabeth and worked toward her restoration had she lived longer.
*Yet all three of Henry's children apparently got on well with Anne of Cleves and Katherine Parr.
Well Henry didn't stay with Ann long less then a year if I remember. And Ann was not a little girl trying to be queen and hating on the girls because they got in the way. She was more a sister to them. And Parr was Henry's wife in name only really. He married her so as not to be alone in his last days. She didn't want to be with him. She was not a child and was though younger then Mary's mother still much more an adult then pretty much all the others
@@katrinahays364 Anne of Cleves was Queen-consort for about six months. Mary and Elizabeth were, from what I have read, fond of her.
Katherine Parr had already been married and widowed twice before marrying Henry.
Katrina Hays Anne was not married to Henry for very long, that’s true. However, if you count their courtship, they were together for about 7 years, which is longer than his next 3 wives combined.
@@Mel-jy4kc she's talking about cleves, not boleyn
Actually Catherine Parr was the one who pushed to restoring Mary and Elizabeth both to the line of succession.
Jane Seymour though really fought for Mary in respect of Catherine of Aragon. Was reported that she didn’t always treat Elizabeth the kindest like they showed in the tudors due to dislike of Anne Boleyn.
He wasn't in a bad mood here, he was just being honest about how he felt about those characters. Nothing wrong with that. We're all entitled to our own opinions. Not everyone has to love Katherine Parr, not everyone has to hate Katherine Howard.
Many people believe that Catherine Parr was the luckiest of Henry's wives because she outlasted him, but they must remember that Anne of Cleves survived him by ten and a half years. She was by far the luckiest, as she received two properties and vast riches as part of her divorce settlement, and lived in comfort for the rest of her days. Catherine Parr may have outlived Henry as well, but she was hardly as fortunate as Anne of Cleves. She married the philandering Thomas Seymour shortly after the death of Henry, and died a year and a half later as a result of childbirth. To add insult to injury, the little daughter died either in infancy or early childhood.
atlantic1119 Anne was "adopted" by Henry--she was known as "The King's Beloved Sister" and was given many estates, including Hever Castle. The only catch: she had to remain in England.
From what I have read, Anne had no desire to return to the dreariness of Cleves, her domineering brother, and the disgrace of being a now divorced and maritally disqualified woman. She apparently lived it up in England, at least until Henry died. But the revenues were greatly reduced during the reigns of Edward and Mary (Edward was frugal like his grandfather, Henry VII, and Mary was preoccupied with other factors), prompting Anne to make a personal request at court to receive more money. In her later years, she was quoted as saying how she regretted being in England, though the gravity of that statement is questionable. It could have been just a temporary sentiment. Why she also had to remain in England as part of the divorce settlement is also puzzling. She was hardly a security threat.
atlantic1119 Staying in England was part of the agreement. Perhaps Henry was concerned not so much about Anne, but about her brother.
Good point, but Cleves was a small and impoverished German state that technically was still part of the Holy Roman Empire despite its Protestant status. Emperor Charles V did not go to war with England over the treatment of his own aunt, Catherine of Aragon, so he certainly would not have cared a bit about this rebellious Protestant duchy. Meanwhile, Cleves was not one of the leading German Protestant states, and at any rate, the German Protestant alliance had already broken up due to serious infighting. On the other hand, Henry was more than a just tad paranoid!
atlantic1119 Henry did. however, have to deal with the Pope over Catherine of Aragon. The Pope would not have cared about a Protestant state, except to make it a Catholic one.
i laughed so freaking hard when he said KH was f***ing useless lmao!!
Yeah that was funny. And true.
ikr 😂😂😂 and when he said they'd have been dead if he'd left them with boleyn
@@hollyb6885 it wasn’t true. Historically, Katherine Howard helped pardon 2 men (sir Thomas Wyatt and sir John wallop) saving them from execution, and was also very kind to the neglected princess Elizabeth.
JRM is so brilliant. He can express complicated stories by acting and talking. He always speaks fastly without any pause or break. I really want his brain. So jealous.
FABULOUS JOB!
Fitzroi He is not you, though.
You don't want his brain, trust me. He has a lot of issues, poor thing. I hope he can tame his demons.
Dude, he had a massive cocaine problem when this was filmed
@@mediocremaiden8883 That might explain his fast speaking style.
this is a man who has done his research, I'm very impressed. Not only with his acting, I think he has done the best Henry VII. But the fact he has actually looked into the man he is playing. His family his children his over all rule I love actors who take the time to do this. Nice one J
Agreed
VIII
whoops sorry VIII. sorry
He was amazing. He had Henry's character down beautifully. Only the writers didn't show much of Henry's humour - he was full of humour when younger but became more of a tyrant and less funny as he got older. But that's not the actors fault, he had to act as written.
he's just his reincarnation 🤷🏼♀️
I wish wish wish they would reboot this series and continue on with the story of Edward.... Lady Jane.... Mary.... and Elizabeth.... So much good drama left to tell....
Such a good idea!!
I'd love that
I doubt you’ll ever find anything better than Glenda Jackson’s Elizabeth R
Well said Jonathan its obvious you did your homework on him.
JRM has a knowledge and understanding of his character that is incredibly uncommon for actors and I love it! It definitely shows in his acting.
Plus Mary was an adult by the time Katherine Howard came in. And Mary did NOT like her.
Elizabeth, in the other hand, was related to Katherine and Lady Rochford (the latter by marriage).
Colour me totally impressed with JRM. He's awesome. Being an actor and a history buff myself, I'm just in awe of his intelligence and respect for Britain's history as well as his honesty about the characters in this project. Thumbs way up Jonathan!
He's obviously still in character. Just listen to him speak, it's Henry talking:)
Catherine Parr had two dead husbands prior to Henry. She thought that she was barren, but ended up birthing pervert Seymour's daughter. JRM is such a brilliant and talented actor who made obese gluttonous Henry seem cool. Definitely dressed better than the actual Henry.
Exactly..Then she died right after childbrth. Thomas Seymour was a piece of shit. Only recieved his status at court because his sister managed to give King Henry a son...and then died right after.
Just found that im related to Cathrine Parr.. 👑
She was not barren she gave birth to a daughter mary and died after child birth. Thomas Seymour was beheaded and nothing is known about little marry very sad
I wish there were more videos like this, analyzing the show and all that. I loved JRM in it, even though he looked nothing like the actual King Henry VIII, his acting was really good! He made it believable for me to see him as King Henry.
@lookinglass123, I think what he meant by that was if Henry left Mary with Anne, Anne wouldn't hesitate to get rid of Mary in order to secure the succession for Elizabeth
"She wouldn't of left them with Anne Boleyn cause at the end they'll be dead"
xD
But Henry himself made the laws that would have brought that to pass, and he himself was threatening to have Mary executed if she didn't conform.....nothing was done without the kings will and assent. Nothing.
Anne gets scapegoated horribly about Mary Tudor. Anne made multiple efforts to reach out to Mary and reconcile her to her father. Mary stubbornly refused out of loyalty to her mother.
Mary should have been loyal to her mother the queen and she was. They were both cast aside because of Ann and forced to live apart forever. Ann hated Mary. She just wanted to be able to control her she had no love for her because of who she was. She felt Mary was a threat to her and her daughter. Mary being strong willed would not bow to Ann.
@@jlyn9047 Anne tried to make amends. I think everybody can understand why Mary refused to do so since Anne replaced her mother and she got pushed aside, and treated horribly. Anne wasn’t some Satan just like children, the parents get a divorce. One of the child is very angry since the father moved on so quick. Different situations of course. Henry had many mistresses during his and Catherine’s marriage. Still was most likely going push her aside sadly since not having the male heir. The interest in Anne Boleyn though really played a huge part in speeding up the process more. Took 8 whole years though.
@@juanitarichards1074 Well,he was sometimes away from home and the queen consort has been the regent during this time. At least this happened while he was married to Catherine of Aragon, and in the series Anne Boleyn was also seeking this possibility to get rid of Mary and Catherine...
Catherine Parr was also an experienced stepmother to her two husbands children and they all adored her. She treated them with kindness and love and ensured they were all well educated. Princess Elizabeth and Lady Jane Grey loved staying with her before and after she married Thomas Seymour.
I honestly love how honest he was and the way he said I'm the important bit henry did for England was hive them elizabeth which also shows that he might be annbolyen and henry the 8th shipper and back to season 1 interviews he talks about both anne bolyen and nathaloe dorner who played her with such passion
He is such a good actor! He is very passionate about the parts he gets. And he was excellent in the Tudors!
To clear up what he meant when he says that Catherine Parr is “barren...” He means UP UNTIL THAT POINT in her life when she marries Henry. She had no biological children when she married him. She was considered barren at that point. She married Thomas Seymour and had a daughter by him AFTER her marriage to Henry.
Henry was a profoundly unhappy man, and Jonathan conveys this brilliantly, as did Keith Michell.
..loved the way his Henry character changes over time, from the beautiful, young, clean shaven, charismatic hope for the future Henry viii was.. to the excessive man he became, such a transformation.. well done! 🙂
which is a total load of bollocks as well as showing girls with shaved legs, under arms and pussy ! totally stupid
jrm is so gorgeous as well as smart
Thank you Johnathan, for your skill as an actor, & your knowledge of the person you portray. :) Kind Regards :)
‘He certainly wouldn’t have left them with Anne Boleyn cause they probably would have ended up dead. He wouldn’t have left them with Catherine Howard cause she was fucking useless.’ Lol
The hardest part for me seeing this scene again, now as a mother, is thinking about her little toddler daughter growing up without her mother... :'(
Naomi Azulay There is apparently no verifiable record, but Katherine's daughter apparently died shortly after her mother.
Anne Boleyn would kill them lol! Funny, mean, yet kind true :O
He's still inside Henry's skin!!!
" Mary reminds ME..." It means he perfectly played the KING!!!
I like him
Katherine Parr was not barren........and Henry thought/hoped for a son by her. KP went on to have a daughter with Seymour.
I love this man! He is a great actor. This is one of my favorite roles that he played in. Gorgeous Man! ❤️🥰
1:15 omg i'm done😂😂
😂😂🤣
I have much respect for this actor. He tells it like it is.
God I forgot how freaking amazing this interview is.
I can watch JRM talk about Tudor History all day long. I wish he would have said if Elizabeth reminded Henry of Anne also. 🤔
Henry was under intense pressure on all levels . He suffered the most *terrible* pain and ill health in later years , and if that weren't bad enough, he was trying to keep his kingdom together . The Plantagenet family were still powerful and a threat . France was a real threat and he had so many problems with the Roman emperor too. He was very worried that England would be torn apart by civil war if he didn't have a son . .. It was never ending stress !
Weren't the Tudors Plantagenets?
@@printezstroman no Henry V11's mother was a planteganent who married the Welshman Edmund Tudor
@lookinglass123
I don't think he was insulting her personally. Henry knew about the animosity between Anne and his daughter, Mary. He also that Anne constantly feared that Mary would hurt or kill Elizabeth and would have probably killed her stepdaughter if the girl even gave her the impression that she would harm Elizabeth. So, by saying ending up dead isn't that far off?
That last line is especially insightful, and I love the differentiation between a well known monarch and a capable statesman.
Ha interpretato magistralmente Enrico ottavo. .mai nessuno come lui...
Gorgeous and knows History.
JRM is an amazing actor and i love watching his interviews
He's such an outstanding actor
He was superb as Henry viii. Well done!
JRM is not only absolutely drop dead gorgeous he is a remarkable actor and was absolutely amazing as king Henry
It's amazing what you uncover when doing your family tree. Katherine Parr is my grandmother on my dad's side. It's like history coming alive thru the generations, as most of the men in my family act/acted just as ruthless as Henry.
Katherine Parr died in 1548, so she cannot be your grandmother.
Maybe you mean she is a certain number of 'greats' grandmother?
(Great great great great great great etc).
I love him. So blunt. Quite true.
She was a step-mother to the children of husbands 1-3. She did give birth to a girl she had after marrying Thomas Seymour but she died from childbirth complications.
One of my favorite he was good n this series Johnny deep talent
Loved this
What an amazing actor!
Loved the Tutors, Jonathan you were excellent in Tutors,
I think Elizabeth was a great queen because she had the intelligence of her mom. Her mom was arrogant as well. otherwise she wouldn’t try to dethrone a queen and be successful!
@MagicCrafter Well thats the point, AB wasn't good to Mary and if Edward had been around she would have been foul to him too. She was only kind to her own child
@darkangeljoy Bloody Mary and Princess mary are two completely different parts of one Person. Blood Mary was created because of Henry, Anne, Adult Edward, The Jane Grey Faction and the Wyatt Rebellions
I dont think king henry was as good looking as this actor
"Rocking" the ugly, orange, polar fleece !!
He has all, of the older Henry expressions !!
i love how he talks and looks around lol . i do that so much and i get told iam being rude. gosh he is soooooo gorgeous! 😘😘
I love how sophisticated he sounds right now
@TheStarSorceress I think its pretty far off. I think they are a million persuasive arguments why Anne was a bad person, so if he wants to insult her, fair dues. AB made threats against Mary, nothing more, and they were about Mary/Anne's place, not about Elizabeth. Obv Anne wouldn't do anything to harm Elizabeth. Also, Henry was the one who did the most harm to his daughters, not Anne. And so for JRM to say 'Henry would have left them with...' - as if he had the right attitude, was a bit wrong.
He was definetly correct about how he gave england elizabeth which is the best thing henry ever did
Ok he definitely seems cranky here. Maybe playing Henry for 4 years is getting to him? He was at least accurate about Kitty but totally uncalled for dissing Anne Boleyn. She adored her daughter. Besides, any emotional instability she had was caused by Henry and the pressure to have son. I like JRM's analysis on Elizabeth, Mary and whether Henry was a good king.
the fact that Catherine Parr was only 31 when she married henry and was 35 when he died. lol but I know in those days 17 was old
LMAO! when he said that Anne would have had his kids dead if he left them with her I cracked up soooo hard cuz its sooo flipping true!
Anne was fun to watch but even JRM recognizes that she was one heck of a bitch
woke up on the wrong side of bed aye, Johnny? haha either way I still think you're brilliant!
He looks like Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange
This guy is amazing 😊
@lookinglass123 Don't forget this gem: "Hes marrying the perfect wife for him [Jane Seymour], and hes learned that he doesnt need an Anne Boleyn another partner in crime to help him take over the world. He just needs a wonderful, supportive wife to take care of him when he comes home from a hard day beheading people."
@lookinglass123 Oh- I figured when he said that, he was mainly referring to Mary, since Anne probably was actively plotting against her life (not exactly her finest hour).
I really love the series The Tudors, I am direct family to all those ancestors, and it was just awful watching my ancestors just destroy each other. I think the young man that played my cousin Henry 8th did a wonderful job, Thank you so much for the show.
Sandra Dee What?!?
Hello!! :)
Katherine Parr is my grandmother on my dad's side of the family.
@@jessicalane6637 im sorry, i had a serious lol moment at this comment. i would like to know how that is possible considering the only child katherine parr had died when she was a child. unless, im assuming, you meant stepgrandmother. as i'm sure she had a hand in raising her second husbands children from his previous marriage.
@@dezi035 I'm related to Henry, so she would be my grandmother by marriage
What is the song that is used in the title pages?
@darkangeljoy I know!!! He totally like...exudes impatience.
@lovelystrings
no, she did die and it said so on several places and wikipedia.
@LostYesterday LOL - Balamory. Bet you Kitty would like that! Hahaha he never did. I like the way he goes - 'She reminds me of...', probably just the way he thinks about it. If Henry called COA, The Tudors wouldn't have worked...Can you imagine 'Kate I have something to tell you, our marriage is at an end.'
hehehe"He probably wouldnt have left them with Kathrine Howard cause she was fucking useless she was a kid herself"LOL I cracked up!
@spunkygen49 Actually, Lady Mary Seymour is recorded up until her 2nd birthday. After that she disappears from history. She was living with the Dowager Duchess of Suffolk after the death of Catherine Parr and her father. Catherine herself died after giving birth to her.
@LostYesterday I know!!! Seymour's daughter; I hadn't realised she'd survived? I can see what he's getting at. Parr couldn't really refuse Tubby. Nevertheless, JRM just don't know what he's on about, to put it slangly...
After watching "The Tudors", for everything which is said about Henry VIII, I found he did what he had to do in a turbulent time. He couldn't afford to be lenient with anything. It would have cost him. And Henry didn't mind paying, he didn't like cost. Between Wars, and women who continually disappointed.....well....England is still here
Great actor!
@LostYesterday WOW!!! No, that, IMO, is COOL. Very few people would probably agree, but still!!!
Love the Tower....
he only said that Kitty was useless because she was a child herself, that was it, does anyone doubt that Mary would've had an "accident" if it was up to Queen Anne? I also disagree with his assessment that Henry was not at least a good king, he reclaimed about a 1/3 of the land in England from the Church that was laying fallow, it was literally just sitting there not being used. and he injected the treasury with much needed money, kept his throne secure and freed England from foreign influence.
“She was Fookin useless “ Lmfaoooo he is spot on with everything excerpt Queen Anne And Katherine Part Who was not barren considering she had a child after his death. Then again he was probably just in character during this interview.
I find it hard to believe Showtime released this. JRM doesn't seem all together here. He's in a foul mood and/or isn't sober. I wonder if he was having dental problems? He seems to talking in a strange way like he's chewing on marbles.
Yeah I would LOVE to smoke with u John... What great conversation we'd have ;)
@MissJasperHale18 He did indeed, tut tut.
1:38 he said howard instead of parr 😂😂
Jonathan Rhys Meyers was mistaken when he said Catherine Parr was barren. Catherine had a daughter, Mary, with Thomas Seymour.
Well said.
❤ Jonathan ist ein Großartiger Schauspieler und ein interessanter, intelligenter, Wunderschöner Mann. ❤
@dancersing03 I was thinking the same thing! He even says ''I..'' instead of ''Henry..'' a couple of times.
ha! good, it's not just my computer!!
Oh JRM... what would we do without you?
@lookinglass123 He said they'd end up dead because Anne was interpreted in The Tudors as wanting Katherine of Aragon and Mary both dead. Any children that were not her own that might take the throne from Elizabeth should be dead. at least she was written that way in Season 2.
Jonathan made the best Henry 8th from the movies/shows I've seen on Henry.
@LaVita6352 HAHA. I loved that bit. Then again, my description of JRM would be 'F****** useless' except for the fact that he's quite exciting when he takes his clothes off, which of course he does in this show...a lot.
HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHA OMFGGGGGG "Because she's fucking useless" WOW.
@MagicCrafter lol yes, although that is just way more forgiveable than 'Kate' :P
Absolument un grand Henry 8
Bravo et merci
