A wild possum showed up on my porch around two years ago, I gave her some cat food, and she has been coming around almost every night since then. She has had three litters of joeys, and I can pet her when she's here. She likes having her neck scratched, and she likes grapes and string cheese. They get really soft and fluffy in the winter! Lol!

The night after the day my mother died, I took some fruit and nuts out to her back patio to leave for an opossum she'd been taking care of. I sat, in the quiet, feeling very much alone. Then, I saw something moving, and it was her opossum friend, coming to eat. He stayed close to me after he'd finished eating, and we just sat together in the quiet darkness. He stayed with me, beside me, for close to an hour. He gave me comfort, eased my stress. Then he went on his way. I have been grateful, all these 9 years later, for that lovely opossum's quiet company and calm. He helped me so much that night, when I was so very alone.

Ada is a saint among people. Rescuing so many (otherwise lost) opossums. They're beautiful little creatures! People hate them because they're "ugly", but they're the best "pest" you can have in your garden! They get rid of so many nasty critters, and they're such friendly, but anxious creatures.

Opossums are actually beautiful. Their long muzzles are just elegant. Their teeth aren't for "biting," they're for ripping into dead animals they find in the woods. They can access a tough animal's edible regions faster than other small carnivores. They're our little garbage men and women of the woods. They keep humans safe from deadly germs in animal carcasses. Bless all the possums.

I'll never forget this one opossum who was eating a squished frog in the road as I approached. Of course I stopped, but other drivers won't. Even after yelling at the little turd, it still wouldn't leave before peeling its precious road snack from the asphalt. This love of food isn't their safest quality. 🤦

Possums eat grubs, which helps to keep your garden healthy.
They get rid of much more harmful pests like cockroaches and mice.
They're some of the only animals that prey on shrews and moles. No more holes in your backyard!
They keep the tick population in check, with a single opossum eating about 5000 ticks per season!
They're resistant to snake venom, and eat several species of poisonous snake.
They rarely start fights, but they *are* opportunistic scavengers, and will gladly clean up any dead animals in the area for you.
They also eat any leftover fruit that falls from fruit trees. This doesn't sound very important at first, until you realize that rotting fruit can actually be very damaging: it can spread brown rot to nearby trees, and it attracts earwigs, fruit flies, and the like.
Additionally, they actually won't eat these fruits while they're still edible by humans--instead, they intentionally wait until they're no longer edible and then eat them just before they start to rot.
Possums will also eat loose garbage, but will not usually raid trashcans in the same way that more destructive animals like racoons do.
To top it all off, their body temperature is low enough that the rabies virus can't survive inside them, meaning that there's effectively no risk of contracting the disease from them.

I live on fifty acres out in the country, and I love it! I have had opossums residing in an old shed on my property for years. I became friendly with a female I named Millie because she was always milling around in my gardens about ten years ago, and it blossomed into a strong bond on both our parts. Since then, her offspring and the generations after have stayed on my property and come close to the house to find treats I set out for them. They are lovely little creatures that act as natural pest control and are so adorable. I treasure all the wildlife on my property, but opossums will always have a special place in my heart♥️

I'm in California now. Possums are everywhere but they avoid people at all costs and I'll sometimes go years without seeing one. Just a head's up: opossums *love* cat food but too much of it is very bad for them. A cat's diet is almost exclusively meat so food made for them is high in protein and only has the nutrients you get from eating meat. Opossums are omnivores who eat all kinds of different things so their bodies require very different amounts of nutrients than cats. An opossum whose diet has too much cat food in it will start to develop metabolic bone disease, a calcium deficiency that leads to all their bones softening. It's crippling and usually leads to death.
I myself fed the wild opossums, skunks and raccoons that live in my old barn. I give them a lot of pet food in a mixture of 3 parts dog food for every 1 part cat food. That way they get the cat food they love while mostly getting their nutrients from a food made for an another omnivore. If you want to you the wonderful little opossum friends out with getting their calcium I've found they love cheese and yogurt. I haven't seen any of my opossum regulars develop any health issues and they all die of old age. I even had a little female make it past 3! That's equivalent to a human making it to 100.

@@BiggieTrismegistus Appreciate the tips and thorough explanation! Great advice for anyone with regular opossum visitors. Never to be seen again 🥲 Usually get a visitor every few months. Wish they stuck around

I never saw an opossum until I was an adult and it terrified me. It looked like an evil clown rat! Years later, as a mom, I’ve been trying to teach my kids to be kind to all animals and the first step in that process is to learn about them. I now see animals such as opossums, vultures, and spiders in a new light!

I was afraid of them too. There's a mama opossum that I leave food for on my porch every night. Recently she's been bringing a friend with her and sharing the snacks. They're adorable but I mistakenly believed them to be dirty and possibly have rabies. So I've never actually tried to get very close to them. It's awesome to learn that I don't need to be afraid of them!

@@CornStar1313 Yes, I was very pleasantly surprised to learn more about them. Mama had her babies a few weeks ago. 3 nights ago she started bringing them! I don't know how many she had but she brought 4.
After I learned they weren't actually rabies-carrying and dirty (so sad I thought that for such a long time!) I roped my Dad into helping me make a little shelter for her to have her babies. (Dad is 64, former architect. He's too sick to go out and help but he gave me the knowledge I needed, what materials etc.)
It's kind of YOU to tell me you appreciate me helping them. I also tell people thank you when I come across a comment talking about helping animals. Like people who leave food for stray cats or call in when they see a neglected dog. It's important we support each other because there are always going to be animals that need us. ❤
Take care! You're a great person!

Always remember the animals might just be going other places, if the animals are getting oofed they’ll go “welp, I guess we will go here instead” slowly different animals will start showing up or the same animals will come back and both will thrive.
