Incredible shots & video as always, Brendan! I felt the same way when I was there this past July...it's so hard to capture the scale & magnificence of the Grand Canyon. Thrilled to get to experience being there though, & this happily brought me back :)
Glad to have found your channel. We've got a trip coming up soon. Grateful for your video. I'll be studying and reviewing then over and over. My first full frame 5D classic should arrive soon. Curious to see how pictures look compare to 7D mk1. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! One for my bucket list. Instagram husband lol. That's one I didn't know about. Enjoy the trip, it must be so nice having company all the time compared to your previous journeys.
Having faced these issues at the Grand Canyon a number of times over the last 40 years, I agree that the major issue is the emotional disconnect between the personal viewing (Wow) and the hard fact that as a photographer, you are shooting a picture of a hole in the ground, and one which makes its own troublesome shadows. My best photo over the years was set up before dawn on the South Rim, about 2 viewpoints to the east of the main village where all the hotels are located. In mid-Fall, at dawn, the sunrise is coming in at a very shallow angle, back lighting a sequence of mini-peaks rising up out of the canyon, but all lower than I was. This gave a layered look of features spaced out down the canyon toward me, backlit with their shadows, further giving a 3-diminsonal effect. Not too contrasty, as I shot on Ektachrome 100 and printed on Cibachrome. Seasons effect the angle of the sun penetrating into the canyon at dawn and sunset. That will give major changes in the available scenes. Winter with snow in the canyon is extra nice, but accommodations can be limited, so plan early.
Man, you have to share your music with us, damn!! Also, amazing photos. let me know when you'll be in Portugal for the next time I gotta buy you a beer or something
Hey, love your work. I’m doing a road trip that involves NYC, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Monument, Bryce, Zion, Palm Springs and La. If you could only take 3 lenses what would they be?
Another great.vlog sir interesting funny and inspiring I thought the last shot had such presents and had its own sense of depth scale excellent shot keep up the good work👍
Thank you for sharing, Brendan. I'm very short on filters and software...so, I'm challenged in long exposure during intense light situations, not to mention, the enhancement of the dynamic range with the goods like LR... You put out a great deal of useful and enjoyable information!!!!
So true about the 10-15 min after sunset : the best light I got from Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Bryce, Lake Powell or even Capitol Reef was 10 or 20 minutes after the sun had set. GORGEOUS! And most people had already left by that time. ;)
+virginieb20 yup, one lady came up to me as I was shooting my favourite image of the day and said "it's too late to take pictures, isn't it? It's too dark." Naw, lady, this is fire!
That's what I thought about photographing the RMNP. The mountains are so big it's like trying to photograph the ocean. Hopefully I'll get a chance to photograph the Grand Canyon later this year.
I lived at the Grand Canyon for three months and it IS hard hard place to photograph. I found that my best photos from there were taken when I hiked down into the canyon. It’s not easy but so worth it.
$40 to $60? Really? Can you tell us the motels? Why am I seeing $150+ a night and they're in Tusayan, AZ area (closest to the South Rim entrance?). I plan to go during Christmas 2018.
Hi Brendan, I did comment on another Vlog of yours about the Jeep you were driving through your trip in the States asking you your feedback about this vehicle from the point of view of a photographer to another, since I am looking to buy a new car to be used in my photography travel. Any thoughts, recommendations, critics about that Jeep would be welcome (i.e. comfort, fuel economy, space, drivability, in-out access, photographing from car window, etc.). I would appreciate if this time you could answer. Thank you.
You need to start bringing models into your shots....or Jodi....next you will have outfits in the car for change overs for her. Reebok running outfits...Patagonia outdoor outfits...
So Jealous I wanna go back so bad, as that's where my wanna be photographer journey started with kit lenses and a nagging wife come on we gotta go, since then same camera body but quality glass, think I fixed the nagging wife with extra vacation time, wanna pack my bags and hit the road for another adventure
I agree with your fav photo, Brendan. My eyes widened when I saw it, nice! 😊 🌟🌟🌟
Going for first time since I was a young kid 20 years ago. Can’t wait to truly appreciate it.
Totally agree. I was overwhelmed when we visited earlier this year.
I love re-living these locations through your vlogs Brendan! Amazing content as always.
I'm glad, mate!

You are on a roll buddy! Very high and even quality photography this last week! ☺️
+Alex Tsogias thanks man! Easy to shoot with light and locations like this.
Brendan van Son Everything is easy when you have the skills! 😉👍

+The exploring photographer - Jacques le Roux it is nice for sure. And good to have a model to shoot, too.
As always, a great video Brendan. You're inspiring and entertaining.
- A long time follower :)
Thanks for watching Niels!
A great image to open up the episode Brendan and the rest didnt disappoint either. Some cracking B-roll as well. Not too shabby for an IG husband lol
+scotty4418 hahaha. Thanks 😂😂

Thank you for doing this video. Showing the exposures and focal length is really useful, it will help me plan my photography when I go there.
My pleasure! Glad you liked the video

It's in the description. :D
Hey, love your work. I’m doing a road trip that involves NYC, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Monument, Bryce, Zion, Palm Springs and La. If you could only take 3 lenses what would they be?
16-35mm, 50mm, 70-200mm
Another great.vlog sir interesting funny and inspiring I thought the last shot had such presents and had its own sense of depth scale excellent shot keep up the good work👍
Just got back from photographing the south rim and experienced the same things. Beautiful place!
Great to start a difficult freakin' day with this. Thanks always Brendan.
+Paul Burley hope all is well, Paul!
For real Paul! Great little adventure for a morning watch! Cheers man!

Another great video Brendan, lovely images
+Ralph Goldsmith thanks Ralph!
I'm loving this road trip idea
That's what I thought about photographing the RMNP. The mountains are so big it's like trying to photograph the ocean. Hopefully I'll get a chance to photograph the Grand Canyon later this year.
Great locations. Love the music as well!
Thank you for showing my state Brendan enjoying it. Great photo's.
+Anthony Salas thanks for having an awesome state.
Brendan van Son I'm glad you enjoyed it. Next time you come here you should do a workshop.
I like the photo @ 8:02 most, the light is just epic!
Nothing like the North Rim of the Canyon! But more difficult to photograph than the South Rim.
Loving this road trip across the USA, amazing photo’s👍
+Mark kelly thank you Mark. It's a fun place to shoot.
I lived at the Grand Canyon for three months and it IS hard hard place to photograph. I found that my best photos from there were taken when I hiked down into the canyon. It’s not easy but so worth it.
Personally, I love the canyon in the winter. I am planning a winter photography trip there.
Nice video Brenjode! Where can you sell those pictures if you’re not working for a client?
Stunning views.
Instagram husband game on point 👌
Lovely Photos, you've inspired my wife & I to do this trip later this year. What's your hotel budget?
+Gadget John it's low because it's off season. Mostly motels at about $40 a night. Some places like The Grand Canyon and Zion we're more like $60
You and your wife are going to love it. My wife and I did that trip over a year ago.
$40 to $60? Really? Can you tell us the motels? Why am I seeing $150+ a night and they're in Tusayan, AZ area (closest to the South Rim entrance?). I plan to go during Christmas 2018.
I do like the telephoto pictures, very nice!
+Jean-Luc Coulon merci!
What camera are you using to shoot the video while walking, talking and explaining how you are shooting those great photos with the new Canon?
The vlogging camera is the sony a6300, and loving the 5d mark iv for the photos and time lapse.

Ah that image at 7.14 very nice one your best I reckon.
+Colin Green thanks Colin.
Brendan! What happened to the hiking shoes! Lol, nothing like seeing you jump from rock to rock at the edge of the grand canyon in your slippers 😉
Hahaha. I don't need them for those short walks. I'd go barefoot if it wasn't so cold. haha
Have you been to Arches? It's 2 hours up the road. Epic.
Last pic was the best in my opinion
What filters are you using?
A different energy to the vlog! Is it the song.. keep up 👍
What kind the filter you use on the lens? . Thanks!
The rocks in the foreground at Monument Valley are known as the Ansel Adams rocks.
I liked 7:59 a lot, the S-shaped river really makes for a great photo.
+David Karlsson thanks David!
Great video
Thanks Jeff!
Great vlog, just keep away from the edge ...
I had NO challenge
Hey Brendan , I've noted a little dust in your sensor at 1:42 :D
Know what you mean about the canyon is to Grand, and hard to find scale but it's so fun to try.
+paul trunfull was definitely fun!
I wish I had my digital dslr when went to grand canyon many years ago. Because I would hope I would have got some great photos
From your footage I think “Leaping point” (or whatever it’s called) at 4:41 offered the best views/angles :)
I agree. I've got it saved in my maps for next time I go back.
change of music?
The new music is good, but you really need to fade the music in and out when you cut the video, it's just too sudden going from music to you talking.
At 7:49 there is a shooting star in the sky
What about a panorama?
You need to start bringing models into your shots....or Jodi....next you will have outfits in the car for change overs for her. Reebok running outfits...Patagonia outdoor outfits...
Hope you got a bit of rest before driving again.
+Theresa Rice I did. Thankfully. Man was I tired that morning haha
nice video but please change the music! :o
Love the video, hate the music
Please! Don't shoot straight down over a drop-off like that...
+Phil Buglass #sorry
It looks more like how to photograph your gf than how to photograph the Grand Canyon.
+Henry Fitzthum hahaha. "I fixed the nagging wife".
shrugs shoulders and grins, Well made an attempt too, weather it works or not.
What about a panorama?
