I can't say I'm the biggest fan of BMW, but I really like the way you comprehensively break down the differences between the BMW's you've driven. I find the way you talk about the individual dynamics of each car captivating.
Was watching this on the tv and just had to come to the app to make some comments. 1. You need to drive the M5 far more aggressively re the throttle to see its full power. The intake manifold flap only activates with WOT and between two relatively narrow rpm ranges. If you don’t activate that flap then you’re kissing g a good chunk of torque. 2. The looser steering is NOT a feature of this car or its steering tech. It is a badly dialed in steering and suspension system. Assuming the tie rods etc are all good, then you need a steering box adjustment. That’s the screw/nut on the steering gear that people that think they know what they’re talking about tell you not to touch “because that’s there for factory adjustment”. Which, FYI, is the biggest load of bollocks ever! How do I know these things? Because I own a 91 M5 and do all my own work on the car. And because it’s got 140k so it actually gets driven, and driven hard. Overall great review…and of course great car.
As an owner of a 1992 E34 M5 3.8 I am somewhat biased, but I agree that the E34 is the most beautiful chassis of the 5-series. Of course this comes down to personal taste, but I second your opinion. The E34 M5 has a very classic and somewhat timeless design 🙂
