This is absolutely a tremendously informative video. I recommend everyone who is learning to fully understand what this bloke is saying. In a nut shell it is what all the greats do but never say!
Billy wards is funny! He talks a lot, but his “playing “ is relatively simple (and yes, some times weird) Gary Novak is one of the great drummers out there
Teaching is a skill, just like drumming. This guy is a great teacher. There are a lot of great drummers who are terrible at teaching, probably because it came so easily to them, so they can't understand why you're not getting it. John Madden once said the best coaches weren't the "A" students, they were the "B" or "C" students, because they learned through humility.
Billy's a great teacher. And if you're comparing Billy's "level" to Gary's you're totally missing the point of the lesson. We all know Gary's a monster, one of my personal favorites. But he can still have fun learning from others regardless of being "better" or not.
lot of people missing the point here, Billy ward has become one of the great teachers and historians of the instrument. There is obviously a great respect between the two friends here, both monster players. You peeps need some learning, honestly!
that's a part of billy ward's drum video (he invited three of his friends: gary novak, dave weckl and thomas lang to be a part of his video, just to pretend to be unknown players that can't play ... it's sooo funny, real humans with great sense of humor)
Jesus...If you don´t have a favorite drummer that´s fine by me. I don´t know if you´re familiar with that "the best" can be used in a figure of speech way. Not meaning "the best" per se.
To all the angry folk: it's a joke. Novak, Weckl and Lang are hanging out pretending to be n00bs, using fake names and all. "I'm Chaz, don't compare me to Beethoven!"
jostego Right, but it's mindless and somewhat condescending-- creativity can just flow if you let it--- and Novak has certainly proven he can do just that--- so having ward hovering over him and telling him oh be creative right here and then be creative here but for twice as long and on just these drums is pretty lame and silly and no I don't think that's a great way to teach exactly--- and it's not that I don't get what he's suggesting the student learn to do it's the approach I find awkward.
this just show what an amazingly humble awesome man Gary Novak is. Wow .. they must be very close friends. I could hardly make it through the vid. Composing your groove kind of like what gary did with chick corea and allan holdsworth.. sort of like that. I know this isn't a pissing contest but when talking to a drummer as great as Gary is an he is.. You need to show a little more respect,. Gary wasn't phased because he is a total pro. As I said they must be good buds..
Thanks for that perspective, It did bother me when I saw it. Ward should have just played and talked about his ideas rather than using the format of giving a lesson to Gary.. It gave me the impression that he thought Gary didn't know this concept and you only need to listen to Gary's playing to hear his musicality. Its all Good.,, Peace
The 'narrator' is grotesquely oversimplifying and hence prevaricating. Chops are syntactic components. Just as important as 'feel', 'sensitivity' etc. Annoyingly dumbed down. Not even articulate. Just posturing. Novak though is superbly superb.
Gary is the Teacher? Correct? One of the most prolific drummers I'm the world
Right with Vinnie Colaiuta. This is a lesson
In humility.
still love it!!

Sure , it’s from Billy’s video … they’re all playing that role of the “unknown students” … Novak, Weckl, Lang
hahaha this is funny😂 Gary is amazing
That grooving just after around 3 mins is sensational

Ward is entertaining, but don’t use the same word “great” in one sentence for him and Novak! Novak is miles ahead!!!
Billy Ward is giving instructions , to how to play The best drummer in History: Gary Novak? ''
Billy is not a bad drummer but Novak is the best ever!
Cant agree more
Whats this? Is there more? I think Gary is THE best. He´s sooo organic..and relaxed with amazing chops and musicality..

What is this guy yakking on about? Stream of consciousness jibbering? Gary is brilliant-just cut him loose & let him do his thing.
To all the angry folk: it's a joke. Novak, Weckl and Lang are hanging out pretending to be n00bs, using fake names and all. "I'm Chaz, don't compare me to Beethoven!"
yes, absolutely .... Novak, Weckl, Lang are pretending to be beginners who can´t play .... just for fun, no hard feelings ....

Who's Billy Ward? -The new Freddie Gruber?
i wish it as well ... they pretend to be students who can't play )))) (gary novak, dave weckl, thomas lang)
