Hossan is the man. He goes directly to the point and then pulls back at the boundaries, otherwise his thoughts and comments will be like vocal tsunami. Respect bro.
He’s cool that way 👌🏻
I stayed for leisure and pleasure in many cities around the world for decades. Finally, I decided to live my remaining years in SG
Although both countries separated... But atill connected.. both govts seem to be working together for the greater good of both !! ❤
Johor Bahru is a goldmine and lotsa of hidden gems, Something that a lot of people dont see from the outside. I'm glad the youtube algorithm recommended me this. Amazing vlogs and keep grinding.
Enjoyed the conversation thoroughly. Did a one year stay in Horizon Hills in 2015. I hope I can be back there in 5 yrs time to semi retire. I agree witj most of the thibgs bring discussed by the 2 esteemed gentlemen. Enjoy both worlds!
It is the best of both worlds...😊.
Yup! Work is work. So I need to go where the work is. And it’s still mostly in Singapore!
The entire dialogue is informative and done in a very relaxed manner. Good job. Both Hossan and Gary gave very good points on living in Johore Bahru and having an office working in JB respectively - practical and expressed themselves naturally. Thank you very much. Probably - a small feedback is that for the interviewer ( TFC ) is that the chair you are sitting on may looked like a wheelchair ( at initial first glimpse ) and you may consider to use another style of chair the next time. Just a small feedback for your consideration. Thanks✌
both guests are sporting and insightful!
Johor and Singapore will get closer with the SEZ. Johor will provide options for Singapore services, like retirement homes. The lifestyle in Johor is no different to Singapore, only more relaxed. For those earning Sing dollars, Malaysia is a no-brainer... And the crime rate is somewhat overstated...
Thank you for this presentation. Informative. Crossing the border on this extend is not the same like visiting the border. Understanding the other side requirements in full acknowledge is vital. Maybe also on our side. Their are legal boundaries or expectations which must be clearly understood before setting foot there. It is not the question of economics but question of legal abiding. Do ask and complete all doubts before confirming on the dot. The other pasture is always attractive but the conditions and surrounding need much adjustments on both ends. Connectivity by foot is not the same as connectivity by the brain.
Darn right! Do the legwork and find the facts of living and working in any foreign country
a very intersting interview. good job reg ! hope to see more of such useful and interesting videos.
I agree w Hossan that Singaporeans should remain civilise, not start to behave arrogant and snob, and break all rules when they cross over to Malaysia.
Agreed wholeheartedly. When we travel overseas always keep in mind that we are ambassadors of our home country. How we individually behave reflects our society as a whole. A good majority of us are aware of this fact and are excellent ambassadors. The unfortunate part is that there are still a few that behave obnoxiously while in Malaysia (or overseas)...😮
I agree. But then people behaving badly as guests are everywhere. The ang mohs living in Singapore also arrogant, nose in the air, while the ang mohs in Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam treat their host countries like its a dumping ground. So its not a Singaporean thing, its just humans behaving badly anywhere.
25:20 “the press doesn’t help”… so true for local mainstream media. Support independent, non-bias journalism.
Sg news all propaganda
Bad news sells unfortunately... mainstream media too often pickup on obscure cases and blow them out of proportion playing to the already " historically bias view" of Malaysia. I am not saying that Malaysia is super safe like Singapore and it is not. However it is safe by any global measure...just ask the western tourists/residents who are flooding the country and singing high praises for safety and living in Malaysia.
@@leealex24 I only realised it after decades of staying here....slow learner....🤣😅
enjoyable and most insightful interview, well done, thanks. just wished there weren't so many lengthy ads.
Awesome video I like how Gary and Hossan genuineness in sharing their experiences and perspectives. Thanks
Thank you :) like share subscribe haha
Thanks...it was an open interview..no scripting...just talking from our experience and sharing to the best of our ability.

Thank u for this show.

Moved to JB in 2014. 10 years and loving it here. Still working in Sg though
Gosh that’s amazing! It Was 2015 for us.
一脚踏两只船!
Rushing daily between the causeway, I just can't imagine, it's too stressful and tiring.
Great insightful video, thanks!
Glad you found it insightful!
Welcome to JB..yes JB boom is just starting
Just close the border
Wow, this is really interesting and informative. Thank you so much!❤❤❤
😎👌🏻
Good perspectives and importantly, from those who have experienced both sides and are qualified to comment on the topic. Not the staid heresy & humdrum from the local media and detractors who have no intention of stepping beyond the "bubble", and worse, seek to actively discourage anyone from doing so.
I enjoyed the cultures of people in around the world. I tasted the foods and beverages of many cities around the world. It was fun
As an octogenarian, I personally felt that the best place to live is still to live in your motherland, whichever country you're from
Forgot to mention this term is under JB king in Malaysia, looking fwd to many developments within JB too.
There is a trade off for safety with lower cost of living. Depends on individual. If you can retire in Singapore, whether you are millionaire or not, you are already a winner. There are Singaporeans who earned more than $10,000 to $50,000 a month and still in debt. It is really about financially management, pragmatic and realistic expectation of oneself and own situation. As the Chinese saying, gold house silver house, still my own dog house better.
Very nice sharing!
glad you like it!
I am in JB. Puteri Harbour. Just renewed our tenancy,. Now have 5 cars and one Singapore motortrike. Really good value and high quality life here. Only problem is the night bombing by Singapore's MINDEF that shakes the window panes in our 35 story condo. If you like cars or golf - it is heaven!
😊😊😊...you are living it up 💪💪💪..a lifestyle that most of us can only dream about...😂
You miss one important kaki - Uncle Loo CC - strong advocate for o JB …Singaporeans are labelled as “Economic refugees” see his video
Actually I agree…I am an economic refugee as there is no way for me to afford such a lifestyle without draining my reserves 3 times faster…nothing to be ashamed of, it is just economic reality.
@@weesonteh8751 well said, personal preference, btw Uncle Loo latest update his big house is undergoing renovation at Austin heights …in his UA-cam

good host, and insightful guest ..... HAHA host knows his stuff (some say batam)
Good advice esp about getting mm2h cause reliance on social visit is dicey. Nontheless, everyone's reasons for retiring to another country vary so make sure you do due diligence.
Soon JB will no longer be cheap for the masses
Several well-off American, Britons, Chinese, Indonesian or Malaysian or elsewhere are currently living in Singapore for decades
Remote work or Retire in Malaysia Really an Option

Glad you feel so!
Off course we know Hossan
the top risk/concern for any malaysia planning/investment.. is political risk. such as the high speed rail project not recognized after najib stepped down, then subsequently restarted.
also 1998 CLOB saga.. possibility of malaysian govt not recognizing singaporean/foreign ownership of malaysian assets..
Agreed. Political uncertainty does pose concerns unfortunately...the impact especially for investment.
In saying so, if you are just living there.. consider your house not as an investment rather a place to come home too or alternatively rent first and see how later.😊
I used to work in SG and lived in JB. As a Malaysian, I found the perfect set up where I and my young family enjoyed the best of both worlds.
Unfortunately, covid happened and I had to move back to Singapore. My wife and I drifted apart while in SG and divorced not too long ago.
I’m now living and working in SG, kids are also based in SG and growing up as sgreans. It would be nice to return to Malaysia one day. For now, I live the “tough” life in SG.
Covid and it’s management has caused a lot of problems at the individual level beyond health.
I (Reggie), hope you find peace of your current situation and strength to keep moving towards the life you love👍🏻
I was dumbfounded reading your comment. Not sure what to say but I feel for you and hope things will work out better for you from herein going forward. Hang in there and yes you can eventually come back to Malaysia someday...keep your chin up😊
Great sharing on JB retirement! Any chance you can add timestamps to separate the different topics for future videos?
Noted on this 😎👍🏻 appreciate the feedback and glad you like it !
Retirement there they will treat you like a 3rd class citizens
Johor is awesome if you dont have kids attending school, can work from home and ride a motorcycle. Life's great lidat.
😊😊 yes it is easier without kids. To make it work with kids may be more challenging as you would have to enrol your kids in international schools here and it is not cheap which may make the economics of moving to JB 'less attractive'. Do the maths for your own unique situation and it may still work out better overall.
Agree with Hossan that Singaporeans should stop having the mindset that we are better than anyone else in the world. I've worked in China, Thailand, Vietnam, India and I must say I see more capable and more hardworking people there. Singaporeans are just luckier to have more career opportunities and good governance. That does not mean we're the best or we are better.
Good to flash the email, Thanks
Anyway, everyone has a choice to go to live at whatever city or country he or she chooses. It's a personal choice, freedom
We will still retire at Woodlands, occasionally enjoy cheap groceries shopping in JB.🥰
😅👍🏻 what about CCK?
@@TheFinancialCoconutTFC Yishun can?
All northern suburbs can including CCK and Bukit Panjang too😊
@@TheFinancialCoconutTFC We stay at Woodlands since 1997. Relocated twice at same area. Will move to new 4rm bto next year, next to Woodlands South Station.😅
I lived in Woodlands for six months whilst processing my purchase of my hdb resale flat . I noticed that groceries are so much cheaper than Katong where I previously lived . The difference is truly shocking !!
👍👍👍👍👍
i will recommend to katong old-folks
Interesting chat. Thanks. Perhaps one day these two countries can form an EU style economic union and visa free movement.
And permit foreign workers to work freely in SG??? No thanks
retiring in Malaysia using the My Second Home?
Yes one of the ways. Others have done it through other visa programs they have
BTW, how much is the minimum Malaysian Tax one has to pay to the Malaysian Government in order to qualify for the Buz Visa?
You only pay tax IF you earn an income (work or business income) within Malaysia which use the territorial taxation system.
The application business visa has no relation to tax. They are two separate subject matters and unrelated.
Many Singaporeans, well-off or less well-off, are quite happy to remain here. Nobody knows the Politics of tomorrow, nobody.
Agreed. It will and always be a personal choice. Only highlighting options and you are free to choose.
Someone must do a pro and con list of living in JB.
It would be nice to know what the list would show but unfortunately everyone's paradigm is different and also individual situation differs eg family, young or old kids, older dependents, career WFH, do you like to drive, your perception of what it means to be "safe", I could go on...so whatever list is drawn up would likely have a bias somehow. My take is for the individual to evaluate all possibilities and make an informed choice. JB is so nearby not like some far away destination. Spend a couple of weeks here if possible. Soak in the local atmosphere and see whether it fits you. JB is not for everyone or may I put it more subtly, more likely only a small minority with specific demographic can or would be able to make the move 😮 TBH....again that is my own opinion aka personal bias 😂...
The medical info was interesting. May i know if there is a medical emergency eg stroke, heart attack or physical accident where can sgreans go and what would the costs be please?
There are a lot of top notch 24 hours hospitals in JB and a lot of them are Singaporean owned companies. There are also a lot of 24 hours private clinics, minor surgeries etc etc..cost for big ones I am not sure but it is surely a lot cheaper. Just do a simple google search and you will be spoilt for choice 😊
@@weesonteh8751Thank you for your reply. Considering the option to retire in jb. The medical accessibility and costs are concerns because of cut-off from Medisave/MediShield funds and protection in JB. And at my age, taking out a fresh medical insurance in JB may not cover me sufficiently.
@@cymei60 my apologies. I rather not give you half baked answers. Talk to your current insurer and your policy may actually already cover you for the medical conditions for treatment in JB hospitals (which are actually Singapore owned eg: Gleneagles, Thomson medical etc). As mentioned again call your agent to confirm.
@@weesonteh8751 Thank you. Appreciate you taking the time and effort. 👍🏻
Medical bill expects to pay RM 200,000-500,000 depends on medical. No insurance coverage or Medisave 😢
So where are the good places, condo, landed places to rent in johor?
West side - Leisure Farm, Eco Botanic and Horizon Hills
East side - Senibong Cove and Mt Austin area (and surrounding suburbs)
All the above are landed...
Hiya, this security issue is because jb is supposedly malay majority; brown phobia!
Really, there is no purpose or reason to move out of the comfort zone. Whatever for? Life is short, be happy with where you are
Everywhere there is crime. It depends on ur luck, tat is my view.
Agreed and common sense too
Is it true that JB purchase price for foreigners is under 1mil ringgit? For approved developments I think
Yes some new developments.
@@weesonteh8751I understand R&F Princess Cove is one of them - but still not willing to jump in yet
beg the question why SG is so expensive?
😂😂 I like to know too
Those closeted protected Sporeans, havent been to Manila, JB is tame, a safe place compare to Manila, where I worked for 4 yrs, timid Sporeans will shrink their balls in Manila, to me JB is a walk in the park.
Why do we need to compare one crime city to another? It’s like having an apple half rotten and another three quarters bad . They are both still rotten.
Anyway it’s your choice. If property affordability is your thing, never mind the personal safety considerations, political / racial concerns, then go live in JB.
And don’t come back to Singapore. We appreciate only people truly committed to Singapore .
Using your analogy, Manila is tame and a walk in the park compared to Nigeria? What is your point?
Living here and not paying taxes ... what about SST/GST and the contributions to economic activity via the increased consumption of goods and services. This argument (not paying taxes) is like saying that tourists are parasidic in "taking advantage" of a host nation's environment while not making any positive contribuions.
In fact I think 'foreign' retirees are the best, mostly consume, no need to give social welfare benefits and do not compete with locals for jobs. What do you think?
Yup such comments just demonstrate the lack of basic economics knowledge...more like sour grapes (many of them here) 😂😂😂
Thanks for Sharing, however, somehow your presentation sounds too sacharrin-sweet, ..similar to a Sales-Pitch
Do also highlight the subtle cultural-differences,and social nuiances between SG & Johor.
Dear Hossan,
What's the monthly costs to maintain a company, and your Business Immigration Visa, please ?
Thank You
Hello. Drop me an email. I’ll answer to the best of what I’ve experienced
The big hurdle would be the MM2H criteria. How would that work against those funds actively churning out passive income instead. If its individually based, the costs would be double for husband & wife. Hope it doesn't become another Thailand. Personally, retirement might take the form of rotation amongst the neighbouring countries to meet the visa requirements. 😢
Yes MM2H is a hurdle mainly because of the delays in launching of the new revised program.
The FD required is for the whole family irrespective of number. In addition, you can use the interest generated and/or use 50% for property purchase.
Personally IMHO, IF the new program is launched the demand will be overwhelming and my fear is that the annual quota will be hit within a short period of time hence frustrating those who missed out😮
@weesonteh8751 Thank you for the feedback. Let's see what comes up. The politics there is so volatile and with it, the MM2H criteria. Hope that once it is defined, it will not change again & screw up the plans of those who made life decisions based on it
MM2H is only one of the various ways to reside in Malaysia. Obviously it is the "preferred" option but short of that you can also get a working visa, digital nomad visa, guardian visa or weekend holiday home 😊. Everyone situation differs but have heart knowing that you are just mins away from good ol Singapore. Living in JB makes a lot of sense being so near yet far enough to significantly lower your cost of living...in actual fact...you don't even have to live there to lower your cost of living by merely doing most of your household groceries shopping and other discretionary expenses. Moving "permanently" obviously requires lots more planning but in the meantime you could always take advantage of the economic arbitrage.
But how can you stay in JB long-term without any investment or business ???
You can't. You need a visa. Business, MM2, working visa or digital nomad visa...
Maybe weekend only😊
When one fall sick and old , waiting for good medical care , try Johor Bahru hospital stay as foreigners and looking for relatives, siblings or children to look after you? If not , pay money get girlfriends to take care till money run out ! Good Deal !👌🤞😅
jb has not changed since seperation...stagant ... forest hill is the face of 2024 ... 200,000 jbans daily commute 2 work in sg....bad choice
Again this is an opinion. I respect that opinion. I wish you health and happiness wherever you choose to be
guess its best of both worlds for wealthy people..not so for not so wealthy
Honestly, it is the opposite. The rich can really enjoy Singapore for all it has to offer without worrying too much about draining finances. Malaysia however offers us ordinary folks a chance to 'live it up' to a limited extend 😊
@@weesonteh8751 for retirement.... who live in HDB with not so much savings, to put a deposit only is alrdy a chore
Past MOP you can rent out your flat @ $3000 and then used that to fund your retirement in JB. That is about RM 10k which gives a very good life in Malaysia 😊😊
Cheap does not mean good

@@MrRoadhawg
Really, the problem is not being vigilant? In Singapore it’s almost a given thing that you walk anywhere, anytime without having to worry abt being robbed.
PLEASE! If you hv to be on high alert every time you are out, you are in the wrong country.
Malaysians are struggling and suffering in pain about the country's high inflation! As a Singaporean your mind will automatically calculate the rate of ÷ by 3+ when in Malaysia and bingo all things damn cheap. It is NOT cheap for Malaysian be it medical, dental, petrol, living etc...😢
Yes agreed. However you have to be cognizant to the fact that this interview is meant to be from the Singaporean perspective and not the Malaysian perspective (except the 500k Malaysians earning SGD 😂).
I honestly feel for the locals who earn RM and spending in Malaysia...it is hard. However they could make the choice to work in SG and get the same perspective as us too 😊...we have historically welcomed Malaysians anyway.
But u dont pay taxes yet u enjoy the benefits of malaysia like roads and etc
Who? Me? Oh trust me I’ve been paying both personal and company taxes. Here and SG. Legal entities have to be above board mate.
Direct taxes is only a part of the government revenue. Our mere presence living and spending in Malaysia generates lots of economic activities and taxation gains via GST and increasing Malaysian retailers profits. It is a win win for.both. We get to enjoy great infrastructure without directly paying via income taxes but we pay indirect taxes which may end up significantly more😅. Rest assured we do contribute to the infrastructure incl roads, etc

There is much better option than johor come on be adventurious
Whilst I do not necessarily disagree with you, JB is logistically the closest hence making the move "easier". Yes the world is your oyster outside Singapore and there are of course far flung places in EU, NZ and/or North America.
Making the move to "retire" (optional) or living outside the comforts of your home country is already a monumental hurdle for most Singaporeans thus JB is a less strenuous option for most. Having said that for the more adventurous, do expand your geographical boundaries 😊...
Don’t oversell it’s safe - there’s way more petty thefts
Agreed. Anywhere outside Singapore is less safe. If you compare JB or Malaysia it is far safer than western countries….i have stayed in both and I know the difference. Regardless use common sense wherever you are. Yes JB is definitely’less safe’ but on an overall global basis it is extremely safe place.

Arbitrage creates certain dynamics. The opposing phenomenon is more Malaysians try to strike it out in Singapore. Doing similar work but getting a decent pay bump by moving to another city. And arbitrages close over time. That is not discounting the struggle Malaysians are experiencing.
Shows that Singaporeans basically cannot retire in Singapore anymore.
It is more than entirely possible to retire relatively "comfortable" in Singapore. It just depends on an individual perception of value or lifestyle needs post retirement. If you want to live large, it is obviously challenging in Singapore for the average retirement income but with proper planning still possible...hard but possible.
If you choose a simple retirement based on CPF Life FRS payout...yes still possible but the key word is simple. Nothing wrong with that and no judgement either way. Decide what is important to you and live accordingly. 😊
this leong seems so anti government and bias. he should earn malaysia salary as malaysians do
This Leong is a patriot. The podcast is about rebasing in JB. I’m 100% Singaporean. I live here to work - to survive. I’m giving the positive aspects of life in JB. Not speaking ill of my own home.
