- Lake George Windsurfing on Glass 2023 - A light wind session launching from 5 Mile, early morning light and mirror flat water in parts of the lake makes for beautiful viewing. The water is mirror flat because the lake is very shallow with thick weed so you must use a dedicated weed fin. In this session the wind was a little over 15 knots. The lake is in Australia.
Featuring John, Phil, Jason, Derryn, Marina, Mark, Maree, Jason, Geoff and others.
Before you ask a question in the comments, have a read first I think you will find answers to any questions that you have thanks
What an insane circumstances ! Windsurfer since 1976 and my favourite discipline is planing as soon as possible by low wind on flat water. Formula windsurfing, Raceboard en big slalom boards. But I never surfed on a " mirror" Too cool this vid! 🤟
Thanks Jeroen, yes very cool so sail there !
This is the first time I’ve ever commented on a video and I’ve watched plenty of them. Absolutely outstanding, congratulations. never seen anything like it, really beautiful
Thanks Lucas, I really appreciate your appreciate your comments : )
Looks like a dream! I've kitesurfed in similar conditions in a tiny lake in the netherlands, weeds grew up to the surface so I've been out with 20-25 knots and glassy water. Amazing feeling.
it certainly is Arthur, its a surreal experience I'm glad that you have had that : )
Which lake ?
@@zonzeven it's a tiny enclosed part of the IJsselmeer, just north of Lelystad. I believe its called Strand Houtribhoek. After a few times kiting there some forest guard came to tell us it was illegal to kite there (we already knew deep down, but when it's windy there's nobody, so probably someone snitched). The spot itself is quite sketchy, lots of trees and wooden poles coming out of the water, also not a lot of room for crashing safely, so not ideal for practicing tricks.
@@artyfly100 Thank you for the quick answer !
Great footage. Looks like great fun. Thanks 👍
Thanks very much, It was!
Some kind of dark arts right there. Love it.
It's put me in a good mood for the rest of the day. Awsome stuff.
thanks Ben, appreciated !
Since the time i wanted to try windsurfing, now, after watching your film, I am going for it. Thank you mate ! You Guys look like ya r all having great fun, congrats. forthose good choices! ✌
thanks !
That is Bonkers! Watched the entire video with my jaw open and saying Whaaaaaat!
Looks like it is a really cool experience. Great drone footage too.
Guess there won't be too many windfoils there ;-) But with water like that, you don't need them.
Thanks for sharing.
thanks Peter, much appreciated !
I got the same kind of conditions at Laguna Solada Baja Mex. Back in the 90s when it got some water, it was great ! 6.0 airoforce sail, full plaining with Glass for about 30mins ! Was Awesome fun !
Jim I'm glad that you have experienced that, amazing !
People around the world watching this may not realise that this lake is usually dry and empty throughout the year. It's farmland to multiple different owners, there are fences seperating the different land titles... in that lake.
yes I have spoken to many locals and they have told me that, also been windsurfing races here in the big lake and lots of fishing many years ago.
You’re not thinking of Lake George near Canberra are you?
Are you thinking of Lake George near Canberra? This is Lake George in South Australia.
So Epic boys!! ...I've been meaning to make a video about this place for years!! You just reminded me... P.s If you have any footage you don't mind me using let me know.. as I've never been but love to put it on the channel :)
thanks very much Ben, it is a very special place indeed !
You'll just have to come down under!!! Help enthuse the sailboarding sport here while you're at it.
Nice ! It looks like you can still plane in light wind WITHOUT a foil… your footage is gorgeous, BRAVO !
thanks Thierry !
Looks beautiful! Thanks for sharing (& thanks for having an amazing time windsurfing! 🤩).
Any time!
Would love to say It's just like being there, we that would be a lie. Fantastic video, well done and thank you for sharing.
Thanks Neil, much appreciated !
So strange!! Good wind and not choppy!?👍🤔
👍😎🇫🇷
great hey Ricky !
Almost made me weep with joy... Well done
Thanks !
WoW! That glass is just epic! Sending jealousy from 4000 miles away across the Atlantic! 😁👋👍
thanks !
wow ! it looks like a windsurfing dream ...
certainly is Conrad !
Great video Glenn. Shows up well the glassy conditions on that day. Thanks for giving up your valuable sailing time. Glad to see myself sailing for a change instead of behind the camera 😂
Thanks Phil, you also give up a lot of your valuable sailing time to produce your great vids, its always worthwhile when people get enjoyment from them !
Nice to see lake George with water again. In my 16 years living in OZ from late 1990s to 2010 I only saw water a few times.
Yes I have been told by locals that it has been bone dry at times !
Is this the Lake George near Canberra?
@@simonbarrow4888
No. 🙂
Had such condition in the Baja California ones ..sailing without effort.
Loved it .. 🏆🐿️
Glad you enjoyed that Erhad, great !
Whaaaaaaaaat........ that is stunning.....
thanks !
marvellous video ! ...sure i would kiffe to windsurf on your spot ...thanks
Welcome 👌
Confusing to watch! Good planing speed powered up sail and such tiny chop! Very cool. Only time we have flat water and wind is in winter!
thanks Peter !
I think that's the best I've ever seen it! Wish I was there this year.
yeah it was pretty good Sue, heavy weed but not so much wind this year, hope to see you back soon ?
Looks great. I have done hang glidin there in 1987 , the lake was allmost dry, only some water miles away. Heikki from Finland
Thanks Heikki, very cool that you Hang Glided here, was that along the sand dunes ? Yes I heard that the lake has been dry at times
Awesome.. Nice music and edit to capture cruise on the magic glass. So envious sitting here in no wind. (looks like WindsurfTV just noticed too!)
thanks Jim much appreciated !
Beautiful! Greetings from Garda Lake, Italy 👍🏻👍🏻
thanks very much !
Cool. Thanks for sharing
Thanks !
Amazing.
thanks !
just awesome
thanks Lloyd !
This brings back memories..!
Had the same thing happen to me maybe 18 years ago in Lake Volvi, Greece.
Wind was about 15knots as well, and for an hour it was glassy and calm; after that it turned into a normal lake day with chop.
Sadly, just one picture back then (and pretty low res at that :D ) but the feeling is definitely unforgettable !
Great footage :)
thanks Chris !
I'm from Greece too and indeed I've seen an old pic from lake Volvi with mirror flat water and fully planing windsurfer.
This is fantastic, how is this even possible 😃
Thanks Mat, just very heavy weed : )
@@uhaggar Cold water and hot air?
wow~!!
very fantastic
Lake George in New York?
I'm Korea windsurfer
It's in South Australia a long way from New York lol
Very surprising to see so little wind whereas you are planning !!! It should be very pleasant
it is David !
Love seeing Lake George full.
Have you considered a collaboration with the hang gliders? They also love the sea breeze and the high performance ones could probably swoop fairly close to the water with the right conditions.
thanks PG, no hang gliders around there that I know
Whaw!! c'est incroyable, merci ;-)
Thanks !
Great drone footage
thanks very much Chris !
Magic!
thanks !
This is like flying, i love these conditions.
thats for sure John !
I want one of those fancy new fin motors you guys have it looks like they work great.
: )
Wow !
thanks !
Brilliant
thanks !
Good music !
thank you !
I like it as well
nice footage
Thanks Peter !
That would be one of the reasons to visit Australia again.
yes !
Alright, guys - show us that electric motor under the board now 😉 How is this even possible ??? Seriously the most unique WS video on UA-cam that I've seen ! 👍
thanks very much, no motor needed just heavy weed LOL
Крутой спот, практически как Благовещенская
thanks Kotan
WOW! Amazing conditions to have wind enough to haul and not enough space for waves.
You got that right!
Incredible place and awesome footage. Well done Glenn. I knew I saw your name somewhere 😉.
thanks Neil, maybe we can catch up and take some pics one day mate
@@uhaggar Absolutely. Let me know when you’re in Hervey Bay next and we will arrange a catch up. 🍻 I don’t leave Hervey Bay much……it’s too nice 😂
Great Video Glenn, looks sooo nice
thanks Tony it was very surreal !
Remembers me to 1995 in Kefalos on Kos in Greece with a F2 Sputnik 270 close to the beach with flat water and very high speed
that sounds pretty special as well !
Outstanding footage! I think we need to get a Windsurfer LT in full standard rig (might need a weed fin) out there next year, don’t you think? Has to be one of the most unique sailing spots in the world! #SAgreat . Again epic job on the video!!
Thanks so much Simon, in fact a Windsurfer LT was there last year.
Already been done by Spotty
For newbies, this is one of those places where you'd thought you'd suddenly mastered the technique of planning jibes until you tried the same move back home and failed miserably.
Rob, its certainly a great place nail your gybes !
Wow, weed acting as baffling to subdue the otherwise surface chop.
Thats it Amim, thanks !
Looks like there is hardly any Wind!Cool!
no not much !
Unglaublich 😍😍
Thanks !
Isn’t it also about the apparent wind? ie, once you pump up onto the plane, you’ve virtually got a constant laminar flow over the sail!? With such a smooth water surface, there’s very low resistance too! Cheers
yes thats true Nigel, as soon as you hit the mirror its like you turn the super charger on
WOW! You really had me puzzled to the Max! The only Lake George I know about is located North of the state of New York in the USA. Your place looks like paradise. Unless you're telling me that you have deadly snakes, piranhas etc... in this shallow lake...LOL :)
haha yes we have deadly snakes but not so much, but the lake is full of swan and duck poo LOL
wow
thanks !
I live near an impounded lake in SC USA. These guys have no waves. Is this due to how shallow the lake is?
Thanks for you time.
yes David shallow water and thick weed
Not Lake George, NSW - en-route Sydney - Canberra (due to ocean behind)? The music at the beginning is sublime - what is that?
the lake is in South Australia and the music at the start is from UA-cam Music Library 'Drifting'
Very strange but beautiful place.
Very!
This is quite trippy.
thanks Lewis
Top Shelf Glenn 😎
Thanks buddy, hope you well and you have that car going again : )
That is unreal.
thanks !
One word Question: How?😳
has to be some sort of temperature affect. We have it very occasionally on a sea breeze. I kitesurf and sometimes we get a breeze a few meters off the water. The water is flat a pancake yet where the kite is, we are super powered up.
Shallow water and much Seaweed. I surfed this kind of conditions at a spot in Denmark. Surreal experience…
@@antonm7138Can you say which spot, for next vacation🤙
How does your fin look like after an session? Not hitting any bottom?
weed fins, the bottom is soft and much but there are some rocks to watch out for
Great footage! Surreal. What fins were being used? Anyone on deltas?
yes mate Deltas are the go, you can also use weed speeds if the weed is not too thick or not too shallow. I only use Deltas
I can do this on a kitefoiling setup, but honestly I miss windsurfing
Its still the stoke for me Kip : )
No fence posts!
no fence posts in this lake LOL
@@uhaggar They are there under the water, heaps of them but possibly not where the video was done.
@@duster8100 Not in THIS lake.
So what’s your method of propulsion ?? I’m guessing the sail is just a back up for when the winds blowing right !
No...I'm pretty sure these windsurfers are being "wind powered" in a very unique setting with shallow water. I thought they were powered by an electric motors at first as well.
Heavy weed Darren : )
Im a beginner and want to see. Can you provide group info or event schedile? I want to learn what to buy. Any store or place recommendation?
its not really a place for beginners, very experienced sailors only
How much wind speed ? , Thanks.
on this day around 15 knots
Any particular reason you hang onto the uphaul with your front hand rather than the boom?
Can help to go upwind
What kind of sail have you used? It seems that you have a big one like something about 7/9 mq...and also the bord how many liters? 200 or more?
Hi Carlo, most commonly around 110 to 115 L board and 7 to 7.5 m sail
Very cool. What was the windspeed?
just over 15 knts mate
Amazingly flat water. What is the wind strength and gear? 😮
I was on a 7,7 107 l board. Wind was I guess 12-15 knots? Its amazing how easy the board moves through the water with zero resistance!
thanks Francois !
Gotta be a catch, that is too perfect! (said out of pure jealousy). Gators? Anacondas? Poisonous jellyfish? Acid rain? Lol
Duck and swan poo : )
@@uhaggar and the March flies
@@markmcgrath9098 and the snakes! LOL
Bucket list! why are some parts so much glassier than others?
Hey mate, its just that some parts of the lake have very heavy weed and other parts don't have so much
Wow, so different to my normal ocean sailing in Hawaii. I am on the Big Island where the wind is often light but never flat. Is there gear for rent if I came for a visit?
I just noticed that you put this up on my birthday, 26/2.
Hi Jessie, I don't think there is anywhere to hire gear nearby unfortunately, its about 4 hours drive from the nearest city which is Adelaide
wow how did I know !
do you need big weed fins? Ive always found my weed fins dont give enough lift in light winds so what make/size do you use??
Barney, that day I was using a 23 cm Delta fin, plenty of lift. Weed find sellers should provide sizing guides.
How often do you get these conditions? I've always wanted to come and sail but would want to experience this if I do!
its different every year and unpredictable, every time I sail there it is different
What out for the fences
David no fence posts in this lake, its in SA
15 knots and water is still glassy, that's weird. Must be super shallow. Can't see any kitesurfers, would be a great spot for kiting
I'm told the kite lines get tangled in the weed if you drop it in which can be a real problem, we dont see any kiters here
Amazing!! What equipment were u guys using?? 😂😂😂
slalom kit, the only special thing you need is a dedicated heavy weed fin !
Does it chop up much when the wind gets over 15 knots, or still stay glassy?
Paul, last year it stayed very flat no matter the wind strength, this year the water level is higher and less weed and not very flat, each year can be different
Baffled no wind effect on the surface of the water that appears as glass from camera angle. Water is syrup of some sort? :)
heavy weed George
Co to za miejsce??? Gdzie mam szukać tego na mapie???
Near Adelaide in South Australia
Greta video. Curious, which months of the year does it produce 15 knots+?
Steve the best time of year is Jan to March
Epic vid..who's flying the drone?
thanks, my drone and flight, its getting a bit old I might need to update it LOL
@@uhaggarso someone else flys the drone from the shore?
Kaip jums plaukia be vėjo ?
Definitely wind, just no chop due to thick weed lol
@@uhaggar - o tai kaip nėra bangų, jeigu yra vėjas ?
@@remigijusjozenas398thick weed !
Unreal conditions O_O
It was !
i cant undrstand how can be so flat water
heavy weed and very shallow, its is a special place !
@@uhaggar my dream place for windsurfing
@@uhaggar how deep is the lake?
up to a metre deep is good to sail, it does get deeper with rainfall but then it gets choppy
WHY is the wind above water level ? Is there some kind of physical phenomenon going on ?
just very thick weed keeps it flat
@@uhaggar WOW. How ignorant some people can be !!! You REALLY think that ? LOL.
The air is not moving on the surface of the water NOTHING to do with weeds.
Temperature coming off the surface is keeping the air from hitting the surface more like.
Dude; I've met some DUM windsurfers blasted out of their brains on weed, but that !!!.
You just won dumbass of the year mate.
How big is that gear being ridden?
mostly 7 to 8 metre sails and prob 120 litre boards on average
How deep is the water?
between 30 cm and a metre Angus and heavy weed
Wind and glass - how comes this together???
heavy weed !
Where do I sign up for this?
How much wind is there in the year and in this video? Thanks
good wind and conditions several months a year
there are spots that are impressive because there are huge waves, here it's absolutely the opposite, it must be really confusing the first time not really seeing the wind
yeah it is a bit confusing the first time that you sail here, it all looks the same and you can get a bit disorientated LOL
wind with no waves... cool
thanks Adolfo !
