In one interview at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, Shinkai acknowledged the comparisons of himself and Hayao Miyazaki. He stated that although he respects Miyazaki and his films (since some influenced his own work), he believes that the comparisons are “overreaching” as he put it. Despite his English not being very good, he’s quite humble that he wants to be himself rather than being titled as “the next Miyazaki.”
*SPOILER WARNING* So... As a person who has watched Your Name over 100 times. I'm not even joking I really did. Suzume pacing is very similar to Your Name. Ik this is a criticism everyone has of Suzume. But really think of Your Name. The first half of Your Name is like spamming major plot points and information back to back scene after scene with no fkn information. But half way through the movie when Taki was supposed to meet up with Mitsuha... The movie slows down. It let's you digest everything. It starts explaining this and they go on the final adventure to save everyone. Suzume did the same thing. In the beginning bam open up a door. Sees this galaxy place. Picks up a stone it turns to a fucking cat. Like wtf is going on then this big red thing comes out like wtf. There's earthquakes. Then they shut it. Go home then "suzume". Turns dude into a chair. And then its non stop anxiety. It gives you about 10 minutes to appreciate the area then " suzume" 🤣😭😭😭 thennnnn half way through the movie when he becomes the keystone... The movie slows down. Starts explaining things. Let you digest wtf is going on then they go on the final adventure. Weathering with you pacing is actually the most different. The entire movie is very slow paced like a studio ghilbli movie. Not saying its a bad thing. Its literally like experiencing everything like in real life. Super cool. Obviously the plot is different. But pacing wise Your Name and Suzume is very similar. Just just go back a rewatch your name. Trust. BTW I loved Suzume. Your Name still my favorite.
This is probably by fair the most fair take on the film viewed on it's own terms Suzume isn't simply just different from his previous work, it also embraces the concepts introduced throughout his filmography, and wraps them up in a tidy neat bow, showing that Makoto Shinkai has clearly evolved as a creator. The movie's title itself couldn't be anymore fitting, that alone hits so close to home and I'm grateful for it, and you can call it recency bias, but this is my favorite work from the man himself
I just walked out of Suzume. And wow! Such a breath taking film. I have never seen an anime film before and cried in the end. Without hesitation, I recommend this to anyone - not just anime lovers.
@@animeblues1412 I now can't wait to also check out Your Name and Weathering With You. This one really might drag me down a proper rabbit hole haha. If you have any other film recommendations for a beginner, don’t hesitate to let me know.
@@mules8662 ah that's good to hear :) so: I would definitely recommend Your Name! Weathering with you also, but especially your name! If you like Shinkai's style you can also check out his previous film "Garden of Words" - it's only 40 minutes and you can find it hear on youtube! And since Shinkai is called "Miyazaki's successor" I can pretty much recommend every film of Hayao Miyazaki (and studio ghibli) - especially Princess Mononoke and Kikis Delivery Service - his films are all magnificent :))! If you need more recommendations let me know! And have fun with the films, experiencing them for the first time😊😊
Does the narrator of that video really say the German words "Frisst Zeit" at position 0:24 of the video time? This is really funny and fascinating. And it is also adorable in a special extent. Because I really love it when English speaking persons try to speak German and are successful in their own special unique way. I also totally love it when in anime series even complete German sentences appear, like for example in Attack on Titan: In the opening of that series the sentence "Wir sind die Jäger!" does appear. It is so wonderful. The lovers of anime do also love the German culture. That makes me happy.
hey, Leon here - the creator of this video :) Funny enough, it's the other way around😄 ich bin selbst Deutsch, sage aber in dieser bestimmten passage "hard to understand at first sight". Genau wie du freue ich mich auch immer über ein bisschen Deutsch in Animeserien :) Liebe Grüße!
My wife also finds watching this movie hard. It was a very risky thing to make movie like this in Japan. For us it's an entertainment because earthquakes are very abstract, for them it's daily life, it's loss of loved ones and destruction of "safe" homes. I think that touching such sensitive topics, especially in Japan is very difficult but also very important and Makoto San executed it probably as well as one could.
This animation company makes some of the most visually stunning anime films of all time. Ghibli is number 1, but this studio is a very close number 2 imho. Films are absolutely amazing every time.
Saw the film a week ago and have to say it didn’t leave as big of impact on me as Your Name. Miyazaki is really the only anime I watch and sometimes if a film gets big enough in Japan then I’ll give that specific one a try.
Why do you hate cats? Daijin is not the bad guy here. It’s the worm… hahaha…. The cat just wanted to party a little with his new friend, Suzume… haha… I guess I’m not the target audience, but all 3 romances seemed forced/ a stretch for the last 3 movies. This one, the main leads just met. Weathering, they spent a few days/weeks. Name, they never met and were from different time periods. Somehow, one of the leads in each movie is confessing his/her love by the end of the movie and crying…. Too much drama… haha… But I’m here for the animation all day! Beautiful!😊
nooo - I'm a cat person :D! Yeah, I definitely understand the "rushed" romance aspect. Especially in Suzume, they exchanged only a couple of words...so the motivation was a little shallow I admit that. In Your name I think it was really well done on the other hand! If you like the animation and you want a more grounded love story check out his film "The Garden of Words" - beautifully animated and the love story is also pretty wholesome :) you can find it here on youtube!
@@animeblues1412 oh wow, thanks for the recommendation! The Garden Of Words has beautiful animation - similar to some of Makoto Shinkai's work but a decade earlier. Thanks again!
The only 2 things I did not liked about this film was how too simple the story was, and I didn’t like that the aspect ratio was changed from 16:9 to 2.39:1. I did still have lot of fun watching it, the animation visuals was extremely high quality ✨
Eheh, I don't think you can miss the commentary on climate change in "Weathering With You." Or at least, if you can, you can do the same with "Suzume" and earthquakes, lol. If I had to sum up Shinkai's work in one word, it's "wyrd." Which is the Norse concept of fate, but it's more like... Not causal determinism, exactly, but... Well, you know, it views the world as kind of a tapestry made of different strands, including like time, natural forces, inheritance from previous generations. Although, are those really separate forces? Anyway, humans can manipulate the strings through like the mystic practice of Seithr, but there's a limit to what they can do. Natural forces beyond our control can separate us, but they can also connect us. Looking at "Your Name," while Taki and Mitsuha are able to work things out, Mitsuha's parents were still separated by death, and for some of the other (potential) couples in the film, it's a matter of timing. The metaphor of strings and weaving for intraconnection is what first made me relate all this to wyrd... But strings come up in "Weathering With You," too, right? There the environmental message is more prominent, and it almost seems to be saying that humans are a natural force that affect as well as being affected. Also that we shouldn't sacrifice ourselves to preserve the earth. I feel like there's something similar in the subtext of "Suzume"... Lol, there are definitely strings here, even if they're not explicitly mentioned (like, what are they doing, anyway?), and... Talking about giving places back to the gods of the land... But it's still a sad thing that these places are lost, and we still see that people are very much worth saving. I think about how some people talk about how it'd be better if humanity died off, and to explore these different people showing kindness and care for a total stranger... Also I think maybe we're talking about how people band together and help each other out during an environmental disaster. I dunno, it just feels like there's something here about the islands of Japan being connected despite their distance from each other; Suzume is welcomed into others' homes even though she's far from home.

Whether it was his early works like The Garden of Words or Children Who Chase Lost Voices, so jumping forward to what brought Shinkai to fame in the states with Your Name? He performed exceptionally well. Weathering with You and Golden Globe-nominee Suzume are also wonderful additions to his library. I watched a few of them during those days to the point it influenced me to create AMVs as tribute to Makoto Shinkai. I’ve made many in the past before I learned of who Shinkai even was, but his animation is so visually appealing and stories are intriguing that it had me understand the importance of making AMVs feel impactful and meaningful; not just about flashy transitions, filters, and precise clip timing to the beat or mood of a song alone. ⏱️🎞️
