Gene is great -- mastered a lot of my fav punk rock records. I had a great experience with him mastering one of my tracks I mixed. He adopted my enthusiasm about it too. Some guys are jaded. Skilled pro right there.
This was wayyyyy too short. People are commenting on the "hidden gear".... gear Is only part of it. Listen to this incredibly SHORT dialogue again. They actually share some very important "nuggets". for example: isolating frequencies, multi-band compression, gain, 24bit and 32bit-float mixing...
Hahahaha people think that gear is the answer!!! You can buy all the gear he has and still be lost as he/l. Ive seen many of them reach for a cheap protools eq when the time calls for it... Its not about turning knobs, its about knowing what you're doing with what you got...
I love this video and your approach id make it a thing alot of people are very pissy yet they dont want to pay, everything for free they scream lol nor are they willing to work for it rather then that just hand it over - stay soild and hold your ground your doing amazing 👑
Does anyone know good mastering video tutorials? Like ProStudioLive has Bob Horn on mixing, pureMix has Imagine Dragons, Pharrell & Daft Punk and shit, but I can't find any real pro sessions on mastering, anyone?
Just from the comments feed on THIS video, They need to do better. I've watched SEVERAL other videos on this channel...and I have continuously been left wondering and waiting for the good part to kick-in. It appears as if this channel is directed more for fans, than musicians and/or engineers, etc. Just my humble opinion. The quality of the footage is good. The hosts are super cool. I think I was expecting something different...
La ne I love these videos and I somewhat agree; however, I have to say the reason why we think this is non-insghtful is because they will not reveal how, and for what reason, they use they EQ, Volume, and Compression. It's not what you think either. It's something far more fundamental but genius. It's funny to watch pros think so hard to explain what they do when in fact what they're thinking about is how NOT to tell you exactly what it is they discovered about audio. Just watch Gene's face and eyes in the last few seconds of the video....do you honestly think he would give away any secrets to anyone?
Pensados bitches job is to spam his vids by creating hundreds of fake youtube accounts and creating hundreds of fake endorsements?? Not. It's a lame attempt to increase his own biz and is far beneath Pensado.
If they told you there secrets then what worth are they? it takes lot of hours and lonely nights to get where they at . you think they ggonna hand over there lifes a work in a video. lolzzz. Experience is also a point but no one gonna tell you there secrets. Some of them masters out there they will share with few ONLY IF THEY KNOW They are worth there time.
Kay V ™ what are you talking about we know he have a manley eq, gml eq, and a manley compressor turn a knob or something it is the experience that's is important and yeah I have the right to complain
Universe Media No, it's not true. There are no "secrets" and he's not hiding any gear. Mastering Engineers typically use very expensive gear that the average person cannot afford, because they require precise metering, incredibly accurate EQ's, etc. I think the mumbo jumbo comes from people not understanding what mastering is. I encourage anyone who thinks I'm misleading them to head over to the Pensado's Students group on Facebook. There's often discussion about the differences of mastering gear and why it's necessary. It's not that it's a secret, it's just not affordable to the average person. Mastering gear separates itself in the accuracy of individual parts... and that's just regarding the gear - they're also another (objective) set of trained ears that contribute to the end product. Mastering isn't some elusive art, don't do yourself a disservice by perpetuating that thought process.
There are no absolutes in art, making this entire thing difficult. As for the science, headroom (which wasn't mentioned... unless that's what he means by gain) and resolution. Got it. A mastering engineer brings experience and a sensitivity to the audio that takes YEARS to acquire and an environment to accurately bring these traits to bear, aside from that what do you want them to say? Indeed, what can they say? What was the point of this video? This is my first video from this channel.... safe to say I've got mixed feelings. Over half of this vid is taken up by Dave introducing everything and then by Gene describing how to treat a vocal... at the mastering stage. Errmmm....
I've done extensive research and I've been in MANY real, professional, mastering houses. I've NEVER heard a "great" master come from cheap gear. You WILL spend upwards of $35k.... if you're serious. Or you could just download some plugins and get some speakers from the pawnshop. LOL
32bit FP is just a waste of hard drive space, Dave. And will only be downsampled by the mastering engineer anywy. Internal plugin processing is automatically done in 32bit FP anyway.
LOL this guys pretty intense, please do more of these dave, would love to see/hear him in action mastering a track, to see his workflow and process.
how bout showing us a mastering process

Master engineers are so secretive you can even see the gear if you're so good why hide the gear
You can't even see the gear
