When the factory designed your OEM clutch they needed to be able to manage the power output of the engine. Offer good drivability good longevity but still be that fuse, that weak link in the driveline that if the owner was being abusive to the vehicle the clutch would fail first. The guy who doesnt beg for likes and subscription, and comments... gets them all! I love how you just got right into it instead of saying the subject and then going into a minute long intro that nobody wants to see. And 2 things you said in here really hit me with clarity, even though neither apply, you said it so damn well: "compromises will be made." Period. Straight line thru the convoluted attempts we all try when we want the best of all worlds. And: "you have to take responsibility for your part in the clutch's success". This has broad applicability to life and everything in it, as well as the mere clutch. Honestly it was a little too much information for me to make total sense out of because I have never dealt with this and I am learning how to rebuild my transmission. It had to go right the first time. You are so direct in approach and clear with explanation of detail- you should make the video im looking for: how much to rebuild the transmission. It's like I don't know where to stop adding things to the cart, because I figure while I'm in there I might as well replace all kinds of things. But I don't know how long I can expect to reliably depend on various parts, and the service intervals of very specific parts. Every type of seal/gasket, every bearing in there, pressure plate, friction plate, covers flywheel... where should I stop. Mild driving for commute, high mileage, longevity is the goal.

I get a lot of guys that tend to over-clutch their cars for it’s use/power level, and then they end up not even wanting to drive it. I’ve been able to experience a variety of cars to quickly build product knowledge and experience tips to select a clutch that works for any given application, even down to certain brands having particular characteristics versus the next for the same style clutch assembly. Great info as always, Jay!

I swear one of the biggest causes of crank walk is people starting modified cars with the clutch down because they are used to the dumb "safety" feature on modern manuals. Just a month ago I saw a post about someone who destroyed his block by doing this with just a heavy duty organic clutch. Don't start your modified cars with the clutch down people!!!

I used to drive my evo with exedy triple plate with easy, but this one is way difficult to drive
is there a way to set it up so that it feels like a normal triple plate?

So curious. Does this mean a properly setup twin disk with a pedal stop is less stress on the engines thrust than a heavier weighted single disk would be?

Is there a noticeable difference in terms of engagement "chatter" or driveabilty between the Clutch Masters 725 race twin disk and street/race twin disk?
I've been considering getting a street/race disk set in my turbo street car to replace the race disks that are in it currently, but I'm not sure if it'll be a big enough difference for the $650 cost.

@danielboot Yes and no... CM said a hydraulic throwout bearing will help with street driving because the pedal will have more throw, making it less sensitive. I ended up buying the bearing and the street/race disks. There was a pretty big improvement with street driving! Pedal is much softer and there's much less chatter.

    • @realstreetperformance

With the clutch pedal released most of the noise you hear is the gear lash in the trans and not the clutch itself. If you're talking about noise when the pedal is depressed the floater plates generally rattle.

Jay, is the difference between a clutch disk with the 4 or 6 coil springs and a disc without them simply a matter of dampening and smoother operation? Coil springs help soften engage, grab? I just replaced a bad disc that had the coil springs with one without them and the clutch is not as smooth or soft, with noticeably quicker, shorter stroke grabbing, made me stall a couple times. Will my clutch soften when clutch is completely broken in? Previously, the entire friction point movement area of the pedal was about 3/4". The new disc is about 1/4".

I'm still trying to find the best 2jz/r154f single disc clutch. 600hp. Alot of guys dont like the DM 3.5. So I'm wanting to see more options.

    • @KyleXSki
      @KyleXSki Рік тому +1

      I wouldn't recommend the 3.5 either.
Didn't feel well. It's a modified OEM pressure plate and had poor pedal feel for me. The pucks welded the end tips to the flywheel twice. Once at 300mi and again at 4500mi.
Factory r154 jzx100 that only has a boost controller. Brand new master/slave and all new throw out components when doing the clutch too with Toyota parts.
I replaced it with an HKS LA twin disk kit. The hks twin feels phenominal to drive, and imo is perfect for a street car. Exedy makes the clutch for HKS. Exedy also makes essentially the same twin disk but you can get 6 puck disks vs hks having full face disks. Both are OEM pull style pressure plates so installation and reliability are great.
Iirc the cost difference between a full drift motion setup and the hks/exedy clutches was about $1000 Canadian after I had to pay shipping for the DM setup vs buying the hks clutch from a local shop who got the hks clutch in 3 days.

@@Armanition No pedal modifications needed for the hks LA twin. Direct fit part number for my x100 so the x90 should be the same. HKS has a sheet on their website with the PN and anyone who's a dealer or has access to a distributor that carries them can order.
And this last summer season the clutch has been great with some mild street abuse. I've been able to shift 1-2 doing burnouts/left foot braking no problem. I think the only time I slipped it pretty bad was a car full of adults trying to get greedy on a hot day and attempted to do a burnout from a standstill in 2nd. Car was way to gripped up haha. No issues though after.
