I don’t hate Marie Kondo, I think she’s great! And the fact remains that she’s changed a lot of people’s lives for the better, and that’s what is most important! But I do think just like we all have different learning styles that speak to our strengths, the same can be said for our approaches to organizing and Decluttering our homes. One method may work better for you than someone else and vice versa. Or maybe pieces of different methods combined together work best for you. I don’t think there are hard and fast rules to decluttering everyone’s house. I prefer to look at each space as different and listen to what the individual client/family needs are and then create an approach that works for them and speaks to the root of the problem. Create your own approach THAT works for you.. And can’t wait to show you the next episode!!!

I love Marie Kondo and there's a method to the madness. I believe your approach to adapt to the people you help and space you work in, does not negate her principles. I'd say that Marie encourages people to start with clothes because they're mostly easy and a good way of getting into the decluttering and organisation flow. Eunice's skincare isn't much different if you think about it. It's very clear to her what needs to go into which pile, why, and what needs to go completely. Therefore it's also an easy start, in a similar manner to clothes for regular people without cupboards full of beauty products (the jealousy is very real) ☺️

I don't believe in blindly following something that perhaps is not always a " One Size fits All " proposition.

I have lots of thoughts about the KonMari method (on her original book, I haven’t watched her show). I think there are a lot of good ideas in there but also a lot that might be culturally specific to the context she lives and works in (a lot of her advice seems geared to single women living in their parent’s homes whose possessions are mostly clothing, bags, books, not vacuum cleaners, pots and pans). She has a lot of absolutes that don’t necessarily make sense in other contexts, but which might appeal to a specific kind of reader/client. I follow some of her advice and ignore or modify other parts, and although I see the logic behind some of her advice it doesn’t always work in the context I live in.

It’s funny, I too use boxes to separate/micro-organize drawers that contain a specific category. My husband, however hates it. We are very different w/ our organizing ways.
One thing that I did after I read Marie Kondo was to organize my clothing differently. I found that even though I live in Canada with distinct seasons, I could use summer clothes (think white or black fancy t-shirts or camisoles) under my suits and sweaters that I wear to work. In the summer, I keep my sweaters out because I need them in buildings that use very cold a/c. In the end, I found there were rather few items that I needed just for summer vs winter. So now, I organize all of my clothes for the whole year in my closet and dresser. I have one drawer in my dresser that I switch out the few items that I can only use in winter or summer. This means I use most of my clothes through all of the seasons by using them in layers to take off or put on. It also means that if I go to a warm climate in the middle of winter (at least when we could travel), I don’t have to find my summer tote in storage and find some warm weather clothes. Now, I keep quite a bit fewer items of clothing than I did before when I would switch totes, but I prefer using more clothing in a variety of ways.
With our winter coats, mitts, hats, etc., we do store in a bin called “off season”, but that bin hold our rain gear, lighter jackets, and sun hats when it is winter. One bin for the whole year. At least that MK, for me, works well.

    • @SpaceMakerMethod

That’s great you can do that! I try to mix as well but my bulky coats have to be stored otherwise they take up half my closet 🤪

I LOVE Marie Kondo! I really like the way on the Netflix series she is so encouraging and not judgemental about it, and I like the way that she is mindful about the way she gets rid of stuff. I think the wardrobe thing is just a fairly easy thing to start with (for most people anyway), and it’s a big noticeable win that encourages people on to the next step and the items that might be a bit harder. I think as you are helping this couple it makes total sense to start with the beauty supplies... but maybe if they were doing it on their own then they might need to start with the closet which would be a bit less overwhelming... kinda just to get them in the swing of it!
I agree with you about the seasonal clothes though.... if you don’t have much space and you have big seasonal changes doesn’t matter how minimal you are you won’t get the winter stuff to fit in your closet (or at least not comfortably!). Luckily I live in the UK so the seasons arn’t to crazy, so I can easily fit all my clothes in one closet.... personally I couldn’t be bothered with swapping cloths around, but I can see how it would be absolutely necessary in a small space.

Same here I have everything from my winter coats to my summer dresses in the same hanger rack lol. • @rhosymedra6628

Totally agree with Marie Kondo on storing clutter. Her thing on storage is to use what is naturally built into your house first, and then if necessary buy more storage. The idea is to not start off by buying a ton of storage, but instead to wait until after decluttering is done so that you actually know how much stuff you still have before you bother worrying about how to store it and how much storage you need. I think that's a really smart approach.
And I know you said Eunice had way more skincare than clothes, but when I look at that apartment I'm just like dang! She easily has 4x as many clothes as me. Even though I'm not a big clothes person I always start with clothes first for decluttering - I think some of the wisdom behind that is because each of us *knows* which of our clothes we don't actually think look good on us, or which are too itchy or too worn or whatever, so its easier to admit to ourselves "yeah it's time to let go of this piece" with clothes, an d then move on to other categories of items once we're already in the right mindset.

  • @zeetalzee5582
    @zeetalzee5582 3 роки тому +3

For me, it's about mixing approaches that work.
I've been a minimalist for a long time, and grew up decluttering before moves, and at least 4x a year with my mom if we weren't moving. I used her method -- which was room by room declutter and reorganize. When Kondo came onto the scene, I thought it was great but I didn't really need it.
When the show came out, it really inspired my husband and son. They'd been slogging through. my room-by-room approach for years, and they are not minimalists nor forced to be, but it's helpful to declutter and organize regularly. Once they decided they liked Kondo, that's what we do! LOL And, it made it much easier and more efficient. my son can get through his room's deep clean and inventory (Kondo method) in 2 days and he usually does it before I 'get to him' (through my stuff) to support him. LOL He's 12, so it's pretty cool.
I also help friends who need help with organization, and I focus on systems thinking. And, we do a blended approach -- similar to your global approach) and we start where the need is. And sometimes Kondo is a great fit, and sometimes it isn't. It just depends.
Usually, after we do room by room, I'll have us go through and do a Kondo method as a secondary inventory, and most people find they can let go of much more OR the organization isn't quite right -- so it's a great method to 'test the system."
Lots of methods add a lot of value. And the main thing to bring to it -- whether toward yourself or someone with whom you're working -- is non-judgement. Just openness to people and what is important to them (or openness with yourself and what is important to you). And, what's cool, is you discover 'past selves' that you may want to resurrect.

I have recently had to help my parents who are hoarders. I has to really study the mental health process and us the MK method. You start with clothes as they usually have less emotional attachments, something hoarders have in excess. Also my Mum was spending hundreds of pounds buying storage solutions rather than dealing with the actual items, I am going through a long drawn out process with them as this is attached to Mental Health. I think MK is geared towards people who view possessions differently to most, like thanking an item before letting go of it. The average person can use her method as a guide but can certainly adapt it. Some of us just need a little.

From everything I have absorbed from Marie Kondo and the KonMari method, I can say that she does not promote minimalism. She promotes being mindful about your possessions and ensuring that the items you keep in your life bring you joy or have specific purpose (necessary kits / equipment for your professions, etc.). With the mindfulness, comes the idea that your possessions should have their own designated space, so that they don't end up cluttering an area they do not belong to. Storage solutions are great and there is an art to it (even Marie went on a journey where she was looking into how to improve storage / organisation, etc., before she realised that before you start storing, you have to declutter). There are a lot of similarities between the KonMari method and TSD, and this is why I enjoy your content. At the end of the day, all of these methods are a vehicle for people to use in order to benefit their life and wellbeing. :)

I feel like every organising channel has to do obligatory Marie Kondo bashing these days. I'm glad you seem to actually have some valid criticism instead of just saying stuff that makes it clear the book hasn't been read or understood properly.
The out of season storage is less relevant in Japan since they tend to have less extreme seasons in most of Japan which I assume is the perspective she writes from.
I think though that you misunderstood what she said about declutter instead of organise since you actually share this step. Basically what she says and you say is don't go out buying storage solutions thinking it will magically make your problems go away. Instead declutter first and then organise what's left with the boxes you already have and then buy new boxes (maybe but only if you have to). At least that's how I always understood it and it's also what you say at the end of the video... Anyway I'm looking forward to the next part of the series!

@@SpaceMakerMethod I guess there is a reason she wrote a follow-up book where she goes more in-depth into some of the ideas. Again, I appreciate that your citicism was actually valid and not something like "My washing mashine does not spark joy should I throw that away" that I've seen in other videos like she doesn't specifically say "if you like not having to handwash your clothes, your washing machine definitely sparks joy"... I feel like some people haven't read the book or just watched one youtube video by somebody who hasn't read the book themselves and then they feel the need to make "quirky" comments like that as clickbait... (Can you tell I'm frustrated by this...)
Yes, Japan is very different. I mean we all write from our own perspective after all. But of course this doesn't work for people with extreme seasons, as you said. Personally I just layer so I do keep all the clothes out. I really love her and I enjoy your videos very much so I didn't mean to come across as overly critical!

This looks great and is so extremely satisfying to watch! I was looking at the way the furniture is arranged in the room though and I think that it might be a good idea to switch the clothes rack and the two plastic(?) drawer sets. I think having the drawers next to the shelves would make sense in terms of how the grouped furniture looks together. The drawer units on the left side of the room already function as a set, and the clothes rack (because it’s an entirely different piece of furniture instead of a different set of drawers) could look nice there to open up what is now a very “closed off” wall. Vice versa, adding the closed storage next to the open shelves could balance that a bit more. Just a thought, but I wanted to share. I’m excited for the next one, keep up the good work!

BUT in the end I couldnt get to the "komono" (miscellaneous items) stage cos there's simply just too much stuff around the whole house! after i konmari clothes+paper, I used the other decluttering methods (area by area) instead for the rest of the house.
