    Joe your videos are always good, but this is gold. Super informative and took a lot of work to create. While there is no substitute for time on the water, content like this is mega helpful for beginners and intermediate folks like me. Thanks!

      Thanks Scott.
      I really wasn't sure how useful this would be. For me it was a shame that i forgot to hit the record button on the head cam for the light wind shots!

    I love how you can see down to the ground in that light wind without any waves.

    Thanks for putting this video together Joe! When sailing on the ocean coast the winds are often light and shifty with moderate gust mixed in. This hit on a lot of notes for me.

    As always that Video was Pure Gold. We had an Awesome Monsoon Season this summer so limited time on the Water this year. Final sail of the season is November 20th. Chris Picknally finally finished painting my Red Wildcat Jib so this was a nice refresher to hoist that baby!

    SUPER helpful! I'm a new sailor and just got an old Solcat 18! Will be sailing on a mountain lake so there is sometimes very little to very inconsistent wind. Was wondering how I'd fair with my catamaran and everyone asks if I'll put a trolling motor on it. I've never seen a motor on a sailing cat before and this shows why- that you can still sail on very little wind with a cat. Thanks for the videos!

    Joe, way to go dude! Question, what watch do you wear when on the water?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 роки тому +1

      For non - gps I wear a Timex Ironman Triathlon - i've been using them for a long time.
      Reliable and durable and simple to use
      These are the GPS devices that I use:
      1 - Timex Ironman Global Trainer - very good as it’s really simple, you can customise what information you are being given so that you can use it effectively for different sports. Now discontinued but you can find them on ebay. I just had a quick look, this is the best deal i could find:
      www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TIMEX-Ironman-Global-Trainer-GPS-ANT-HRM-Heart-Rate-Monitor-Running-Watch-NEW/372367506997?epid=1062700174&hash=item56b2d53e35:g:ZAsAAOSwq~tZXAIA
      2 - Locosys GW60 - the official watch of the GPS windsurf speedsailing association. More complex than the Timex but you get more statistical data such as speed over 2, 10 , 20 seconds or 500 meters.
      here is that one - www.locosystech.com/en/product/gps-watch-gw-60.html

    Great video thank you for posting, making adjustments with the gusts are you mainly using the main traveller or main sheet? and also when you're tacking (and the jib is backing) are you releasing the main sheet or the main traveller or both as you go about ?
    Many thanks , Arty

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 роки тому

      I'm glad that you enjoyed it.
      I'm using the traveller more like gears and the mainsheet for more regular adjustments.
      I'll add your question to this week's Q+A - Friday 1600 greek time, it will be available as a regular video afterwards.

    Do you do anything with setting Batten tension pre sail for different wind conditions?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  3 роки тому

      No, the battens should be just tight enough to take out any vertical creases from the pocket and so that they can't move. Any more is unnecessary.

    I am new to watching your videos I have a prindle 16. Your videos are very very informational. I've only sailed my new to me prindle catamaran once I have sailed a mono hull. Just curious why you don't split the sails and run. My only training was on a monohaul is this not a small catamaran maneuver?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  Рік тому

      We don't sail straight downwind as it's much less efficient - we are going fast by having a flow of air over both sides of the sails.

  • @sergios.8690
    @sergios.8690 Рік тому

    sir, capitan, did you measure the wind relative, 6,5 knots?

    • @JoyriderTV

      Just the true wind - i didn't measure the apparent.

  • @Aneblanc
    @Aneblanc Рік тому

    In which wind conditions is it faster to go straight downwind than tacking downwind? Or is it always faster to tack downwind? I sail a Dart 15 in Southern Brittany.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  Рік тому

      In very light wind it can be faster to sail straight downwind.
      I'll do some testing in different wind strengths and make a video .

    Has anyone considered putting a two axis spirit level somewhere on the boat to help fine tune when the boat is sailing flat or is it good enough to just eyebqll it? I've spent the past two weekends learning to sail the Hobie 16!
    Also, what's a good relatively inexpensive gadget for knowing the boat speed?

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  Рік тому

      I'm not sure that anyone has ever done that.
      On the telemetry overlay application there is a gauge that shows the angle of heel that is very interesting.
