I’m in my 50’s and use 3 of them regularly. The camera slowly grows on you. Be careful not to touch the LCD in the finder. You will grow to appreciate the finder as you get older. The shutter mechanism has a magic that is better than more current cameras.

I've had my F4 for 2 yrs now and am very happy with it. Mine came with the MB-21 holder and have recently picked up a very nice MB-20 holder and now love the camera even more ,if that is even possible. I like that it is the grandfather of all the SLR and DSLR bodies that followed. It is the last Nikon body that had all switches, buttons and dials and that is nice for those of us that started in photography in the film only days. I'm now 71 and have been shooting since I was 18.

I’m 73 and have been seriously shooting since 1973. My first SLR camera was a Petri FT-II, purchased from a relative’s military catalogue, for a little over $100.00.
My favorite subject matter, in fact the reason why I got what I considered to be a “serious” camera, was to take pictures at rock concerts.
I purchased a Petri 135mm tele lens from one of the then 3 camera stores in lmy town. But it was a slow lens, f5.6 or something like that. I traded it for
faster Vivitar lens, an f2.8, at one of the other camera stores.

Very interesting and enjoy watching your videos on this amazing camera. I look forward to see more crisp sharp colorful images created by your F4s. I’m inspired. Your images from the last video where you convert film look to sharp edge to edge slide film look was amazing, just like a high end 4000.00 dollar digital camera. Thank you

Hi, thanks - good lens, good exposure and scanned by a good lab are the things I'd recommend. I didn't do anything specific/different here. I was using the voigtlander 40mm F2 lens for most of the shots in this video but nikon's 50mm F1.8 lens in my ektachrome video. slide film particularly looks better in 35mm as the ISO is really low and grain is not really visible. For voigtlander lens I was relying on camera's focus indicator and all exposures where metered internally by the camera itself :) it's a great camera, so I definitely recommend!

The F4(s) is NIkon most versatile SLR camera, able to work with Non-AI, AI, AI-S and AF lenses. Even in the F4 configuration (With the MB-20 battery holder) it works with the two auto-focus lenses the AF 80mm f/2.8 and the AF 200mm f/3.5 from the F3AF era (Not specified in the manuals but it works, but only with the F4 camera, not the F4s version) [the AF 80mm f/3.5 is optical excellent from wide open f/2.8 to f/16, a hidden gem of a lens]. Every F4(s) function has a dial, so photographing with it is a very tactile experience.

worth mentioning that the F4 has a diopter for us with poorer eyesight built into the viewfinder and a curtain to flip shut for "B" long auto exposures. The "T" mode is for long manual exposures as it conserves the battery by switching the camera off until the cable lock is released. 250th second flash sync is useful for balancing with ambient exposure. I hope one day someone will create a digital back for the F4 (especially an infra-red digital back).

Great video. It reinforces the reasons why I wanted to buy an F4s last week (for $169.99 on ebay) and another F4s with MF-23 data control back this week (for $199.99 on ebay). I bought two because the first F4s won't auto focus with my G lenses in P or Ph modes so I'm sending it back. I'm actually glad I'm able to return the first one because the second one has the MF-23 back which is currently selling for $99.99 on ebay.

Dear Sathya, Since some more then a year, I own an F4, attached lens was a 35mm /1:2 nikkor D AF. O did not took it out to take pictures. My aim was to sell it seperately and earn some money, as I bought it moderately cheap. But as I took it to mu hands O loved it. The diaphram of the lens was oily. But I could clean it, any how three times. I hope it won't again. Then I started to gather some other AF lenses of Nikon. Because O loved the body. Although it is very heavy to carry. The Real manuell buttons are charming. But I still have some ..... . Some of the buttons are unneccesary. For examplesome lock buttons. On off drive button lock, and so.

It's a very good contribution to this outstanding camera. For my purposes, the F801s is sufficient - till nowadays. But in former times, I was satisfied to use a 250exp. film attachment to the F2. The F4 has been "The Camera of the Year" since, and I had the honour of shooting with it (the device of a pro & friend of mine) for half an hour:-)) Thank you!

RE: flash. Absolutely! This being 2nd gen TTL & Matrix Fill (now called "Back Lighting" BL) & 1st HP 250 sync makes for amazing experiences.. I used it w/ SB-80DX in multi master / slave optical trigger (pre CLS), Macro SB-21B & SB29. It still works fine w/ newer iTTL digital in regular TTL or A-Auto. Utilizes advanced HP & Slow sync for front or rear shutter curtain. New electromechanical drop leaf shutter for smoothness. I don't know what these were rated for but I had it in family for 35 yrs & I had it 20 yrs of my life & its been used nicely since. As for dropping, Yes, I had a 2nd & 3rd cause of their amazing used price performance even back in 2002 ($400 or so). I've fallen off a moving off road vehicle. SB-28 snapped off & rolled down but the F4E took a spill & kept going. Those SpeedLights last forever as well. Ordered hot shoe section & after that its working again. You're right, they may take some battle scars as these were a true working horse in the pro field but besides looks, they keep going. The F4 broke new records, it went to space on a shuttle, deep sea, the Super bowl & so much more. If you dont believe this camera is good enough, ask the old timers of yesteryear. This was a money maker.

I want to Clear something. Actually we, for photography entusiasts there is no need for a pro camera. More over perhaps it would be good enough to carry a F301for taking pictures. Since you are using manuel lenses. But it does not work in this manner. We actually like some precious tools. O have a small collection. The cameras I like, from Compact fixed lens like minox, Olympus xa, xa2 then Zeiss ikon's, Kodak's to Mamiya medium formats. But mostly I take compacts with 35-40mm with me. Any way I am looking forward to take pictures with my Mamiya press23 with 90/3,5 and 75/5,6 lenses. Thank you so much for your works. I am glad to watch.

Snagged one yesterday for £45 on Ebay. Seller doesn't know much about it, it was her partners who was a photojournalist and sadly passed away some time ago - aparantly it's been in the loft/attic ever since. Listed as 'for parts' but she doesn't know if it's working or not. Decided to roll the dice.. wish me luck. Looks a bit rough cosmetically but I'm hoping the photojournalist kept the important bits working and just didn't care about how it looked.. fingers crossed! I really want it to work!

@@SathyaPeacock Gladly! It arrived and I put batteries in it and.. dead as a dodo. Brick. Damn.. ... ... ... But wait, there's more! The batteries I'd put in were rechargables, they'd *been* charged when I unplugged the charger (because they were full) but that was months ago.. cue me searching through our battery recycling bin - Aha, A Duracell.. and an Energizer! Well, they don't sell those individually, so there's at least 3 more of each in there.. more digging.. 8 batteries! Rushing back to the camera, I was filled with 'hail mary' hope. Put them in and.. LIFE! It worked! I took a deep breath, took the old batteries out, calmed my nerves, grabbed my car keys and headed to the store. Fast forward an hour and I'm back with an 8 pack of Duracell AA's. Attacked the packaging and ripped the batteries out like an hungry bear with a happy meal - Put them in and holy - it works....! It all works! Metering, Motor drive, the LCD's have NO bleed.. it works!! ... ... ... ...
... ... ... ... With one small caveat - The Autofocus is semi-broken. Basically, sometimes it will 'see' or recognise that there's a CPU lens (an AF lens) attached, a lot of the time it won't. Most of the time it won't. I've tried scrubbing the bejesus out of the contacts, with contact cleaner, isopropyl, using an eraser, all the common tricks. They *look* sparkly clean but I did notice a couple of times that it wouldn't work, then I'd clean the contacts, then it'd work for a couple of hours, until I put the camera down for a bit and coming back to it.. same thing, it can't see the CPU lens. It hasn't worked reliably enough for me to be certain that's causation and not just correlation though, it has started working on its own once or twice as well. Maybe it's not the contacts, maybe there's oxidisation on a switch somewhere inside the body. I tried spraying contact cleaner into the AF select switch and wiggling it a lot, didn't seem to help, but maybe I'll give that another go.
I know it's an issue with it 'seeing' the CPU lens because when I put it in S mode, (or P or Ph) it defaults to "A" mode, the expected behaviour if one of those modes is selected but with an AI or AI-S lens attached (instead of an AF-D). Have tried a bunch of "known-good" AF-D lenses, they don't work on the F4, they do work on other bodies, so it's defo not the lens.
I am overall super freakin' happy though, if someone had said to me "hey bud, do you wanna buy a Nikon F4 for £45? It works great, apart from there is no AF, it's busted, so Manual focus only" I'd have said Hell yeah! At that price. I guess I could always *try* to find someone who will CLA an F4s in the UK for less than the price of a working kidney, although I fear the outlook is grim on that front. But yeah, overall i'm absolutely loving it ... ... ...
Butttt there's this little nagging part of me that really *wants* it to be 'fully working' even if it's a feature I won't use much. (My other nikon film bodies are all manual focus).
I've run a few rolls of film through it so far and apart from the AF, everything is lovely. The metering seems great! It weighs a ton! I love it!
And that's the full story, up until now, where we're at, and where we might be going!

      @SathyaPeacock  10 місяців тому

Hi, I only ever shot with 2 lenses on this one - the voigtlander 40mm F2 and Nikon 50mm F1.8D. Voigtlander is a better lens with slightly wider field of view but it's a fully manual lens. So if you are happy with full manual focus and aperture control then I'd say go for the voigtlander, otherwise the 50mm is quite a nice lens and it supports autofocus and auto aperture. I don't have any personal experience with any other lenses on this camera unfortunately. But Nikon made some really good lenses and whatever focal length you're after I'm sure you'll find a version that works for you and is good. That's one of the strong points of this camera, you can get any lens that nikon made over 6 decades and use it with this one :) All the best!

    i own Nikon F, F2sb and F4 with I have 2 only lens, Voigtlander 40mm f2 and 105mm f2.5 sonnar version.
Tested F3 but it's the most overated of the serie, nothing special for me.
I'm afraid F5 is too big for me, and read the matrix metering is less efficient than the F4. I don't use AF so i don't know yet if i like to get one. I'm not fan of bigs camera like F5 or Dx serie.
Thanks to Nikon released D700, a small D3. Mine is only 18k shutters atuations. His panasonic full frame sensor is so specail, so magic i regret no more sensor like in Nikon mirorless series. And more special when work with Voigtlander 40mm.
I do lot of street photo, i'm lucky my favorites camera like F4 and D700 are "smalls" unlike F5 or D3, etc..

      Thanks a lot for watching!
Indeed it is a pretty good camera. I must say I am intrigued by F5 and F6 and intend to try them :) I did not know about the D700 and it's panasonic sensor. Nikon certainly made some workhorse cameras with good image right out the box. Have you tried their D200? I have been seeing more and more people using it, and makes me curious to try.

@@SathyaPeacock D200 is my next camera I would like to try but I don't have wide lens ready for crop 1.5. I only have Voigtlander 40mm and 105mm.
