It's not just the Nucs, even the packages that I have gotten from Barnyard Bees have built out frames and population has increased so fast it has had me scrambling for equipment to ensure that queen has room to lay. I hop I don't have to buy more packages, but if I do I know where to go to get a great result.
Hey David! Just wanted to say how much I appreciate you sharing your knowledge of beekeeping with us! This is my first year bee keeping, I've gone from 0 to 17 hives (swarm traps/cutouts/splits). I've been researching since Sept of last year and my bees are healthy and growing because of the information you are sharing. I appreciate you being more concerned about the bees than the money. I metaphorically shake your hand and thank you!
I am glad the video was long. It gave me a full understanding of the cycle system of growing out and expanding your hives, making your own queens, as well as keeping them from swarming. A visual demonstration of how it's actually done is most important for a new bee keeper or potential beekeeper like me. Seeing it done real time is better than trying to explain it in words. Not everyone can follow along with verbal instructions. Audio and visual is key to this business.
Best explanation I’ve seen! David I said it before, you are a wealth of information! Thank you for what you are doing, teaching the next generation of bee keepers!
I always find it somewhat amazing that you raise and sell bees - and teach people how to split and raise their own bees. You raise and sell queens - and teach people how to raise their own queens. You give all the tips you can to teach people all that they need to do it themselves. Its just one of the many reasons I love Barnyard Bees, but it certainly the biggest of the reasons. Thank you David, great video!
I got a wax coated 10 frame 2 large deeps and small super last week and put it in its place for my first ever bees. Picking up my 5 frame nuc today so I went tonight to check and see if I had gotten a swarm which was my original plan until yesterday. Already got a carpenter bee bored about a foot into my super box.... stuck a long flexible stick in that far and it started buzzing. Is this common??
I really wish I had seen this video before installing my first nuc last month. Bad experience, bad advice from seller, but I just want to thank you for caring enough to share this helpful information willingly with us.
David, I love the looks of your beautiful golden queens, and I LOVE the gentle disposition of their daughters!!! I have had several of your queens. Rick in Pa.
Great video. The rant is accurate and understandable. Most postal workers are there for the money and early retirement for a cushy job. Thank you all at Barnyard bees!
Prolly the best video you’ve ever done David. Awesome! I operate the 2 and 5 frame nucs thanks to you. I love those style and size boxes. Thanks for what y’all do for us beekeepers. From NC.
A package of bees was mailed to me and the guy at the Post Office was scared like you said at 20:41 the guy carried them out with baby steps like it was dangerous or a Boom package. I let the bees settle down overnight and installed the bees around noon, seem to be doing fine, pulled the queen cage 4 days later.
I ordered 2 queens a few weeks ago and they said they would be shipped the next day. They were and I received them the following morning fat and healthy. Thanks David.
I'm in CT and just got 2 packages from Barnyard bees. Just like he said, they were sent out immediately after I placed my order along with feeders (I know b/c I got the tracking info right away). 2 Days later I got the feeders but no bees. I call the post office and they have no idea where the bees are, the trail went cold in TN. I asked the post office what they would do if the bees were lost or dead and they said they wouldn't do anything (so they don't take any responsibility financially). 4 days later I get a call at 6:30 am to come grab my bees. I go down and pick them up and get them home. There were more than normal dead (I'd estimate 10%), but that is only b/c it took a week for USPS to get them to me. The bees are now doing well however and are very gentle. Thank You Barnyard Bees for the great bees. I will be making many more orders from you!
Great Video that's what im talking about details. It's all in the little things. Thanks for this it really helps take out some of the confusion about bees fighting and such. Keepem coming.
I want to become a bee keeper when I get older. Barnyard Bees inspired me to do it, hope I can find some support here in Sweden when my bee-career starts 🐝🇸🇪
David, Best video this year!!! Thank you guys for all your hard work! My husband and I are talking about moving to North Georgia! Would love to see the bee yard!
Well i just got a nuc a week ago. We were suppost to let it set overnight, and then transfer. They are doing great, and are not traumatized at all. They have been busy collecting nectar.
Love your videos dave. Did order a pkg from you. As you said the post office drags their feet. The bees where healthy. The queen was weak and lethargic. She was released ok. But never did start laying. She finally expired. I had hoped to get a start from your hybrid. They are extremely gentle. But otherwise, keep up the good work. Love the videos and have implemented some if your techniques. Matt Arnold. North Ridgeville, Ohio.
David I have a question. I watch your Videos all the time as well as others. I have Nucs and 10 Frame Deeps. All have inner covers and Telescoping Tops. I want to build Nucs like yours, but from what I seen, there's NO ventilation with Migratory Tops. Please explain how they work please. Thank you.
Do you always place a feeder on these or not necessarily? I'm trying to decide whether to make lids for the feeders rather than for the hive box since the feeder will be larger.
If you set up a 2 framer with a mated queen in Aug will you have about an 8 framer or so by winter if n Texas and feed heavily or should I plan to over winter a 5 framer. All new frames except the initial frame.
I feel like you're talking about me. I asked if Indiana was too far to ship. I also just bought a queen from you; it was shipped out immediately, and it was supposed to arrive here today, but now the P.O. says Saturday. Does it come with instructions on how to introduce it to the existing queen-less hive, or can you link a video? Last Saturday my hive had two deeps full of lots of bees, all cells had uncapped nectar or wet pollen, and the only brood was two capped drone cells. I'm worried I might find a laying worker there this weekend.
Do you add queens to your Nucs.or are you letting them draw out their own queens? I have three of your Awesome little boxes and I let the bees draw their own.Witch has been successful..but how do you use them?
Because bees that are healthy and expand the colonies quickly, for a beekeeper that is eventually maxed out for physical space to keep expanding, what do you do with all the extra bees if you cannot expand futher or there is not much market for selling surplus bees? I'm from a small Caribbean island Trinidad and Tobago.
Unlike most of the other customers, I bought a package in the queen was a drone layer. David only gave me 50% off a new queen. They don’t stand by their own products.

David, so glad you mentioned the issues with the US Postal Service. Of course you know my experience (twice) with them and I can only add to your comments to not take what they say on the website or customer service representative on the phone says (they only see the same screen as the website for customers). You must ask for a supervisor and explain that this is a LIVESTOCK shipment and must be moved though the USPS system with the utmost care and urgency. File a CASE immediately, DO NOT WAIT like they will tell you you have to do for at least 48-hours after expected arrival you do not, you have every right to file a case on the expected day of delivery if you have received your normal mail delivery and your bees or queens have not been delivered to your door. And they must be delivered to your door because in this heat of summer they will cook in a mailbox in minutes if not seconds. Hold the USPS accountable. My father is a retired Postmaster and the only way they will improve or change is if they are held accountable by us the public that pay for this service. Finally, if it absolutely has to be there guaranteed it is best to ask for and pay for Express Mail Service and hopefully Barnyard Bees can make that happen if the customer pays that cost. I'll let David answer that part. Finally, of my two shipments ByB did the admirable thing and replaced the order (still a Postal Inspectors Open Case because bees were given to non-recipients) the replacement order still arrived late due to USPS playing games with bee shipments. Heather, Jimmy and David always stood by and helped and communicated throughout both processes. Will always be doing business here.
Im a carrier for USPS. First, you pay nothing for the service, it is welfare. Second, have barnyard bees put your phone # on the package and say urgent call upon arrival. Most clerks are happy to call you at 6 am upon arrival to take them away. Or better yet, be responsible and notify the postmaster that you have bees coming, give them your name # and say call asap.
@@buildingwithtrees2258 I won't get into an argument here, but feel free to email me at gc9731@gmail.com and we can discuss further. I can share with you pages of documentation, emails, and case numbers. As a carrier you should note that your wages are paid for by the public that pays for and uses the USPS. I realize it is not a taxpayer funded enterprise, but considering the failures of the system, if Congress and the public ever decided to remove support and require the USPS to be fully self-supported including no subsidy or preferential treatment given to USPS mail on private air carriers, the USPS would fail within one year. The management practices, facilities and support systems are outdated and over-taxed. To answer your argument about doing the responsible thing to have ByB put my phone number on the package, that should not be required but ok, I'll give you that win. Me calling the Postmaster and telling them I have got bees coming, first order in March I didn't do that and bees arrived on-time in the three days prescribed by Priority Mail. Next order in May, called and talked to Supervisor Craig and Postmaster and told them I was expecting bees, gave them the Tracking Number and they could do nothing because the bees sat on the dock in Atlanta for four days, then they finally got to Tacoma where the package was damaged. They did not call either recipient of the bees to say what happened, they instead tried to say I and the other individual picked up the bees in person (myself and another ByB customer in the area). They even initially lied to a postal inspector and said they had proof I had picked up my bees but never produced that evidence because I was three-hundred miles away in Spokane Washington for that entire day and had the proof to prove it. They finally came clean and said the bees were given to a local beekeeper. Finally, on that following replacement order it took the interference of a regional postal inspector to get involved to find out why my bees sat at the processing center for seventy-two hours before they were on a plane overnighted to Seattle and then on a truck over to my in Central Washington that next day. I still picked the bees up at the regional processing facility here locally to spare the carrier that did not want them in her truck. I know many a beekeeper and supplier that would rather not use USPS if at all possible. When I order queen bees I have them shipped UPS as queens are not shipped with a liquid can of syrup. Thankfully the industry is changing with the introduction of the Bee Buss and gel feed provided. UPS is reviewing its policy on live bees being shipped with a liquid due to this factor. This is good news and I hope we can finally have some competition in this shipping market for live bees. My biggest point in all of this is exactly what David was saying. This only hurt Barnyard Bees. They fulfilled my order at their own out of pocket expense. The Post Office, was difficult to get a hold of often times having to hold for up to an hour before being given the option to have an agent call me back. Agents are worthless on the phone because they will only tell you the same thing you can see on the website (I could write software to do this in about 30-days). There is a free cost saving tip! Navigating the Case System is unnecessarily difficult requiring a human at all times. #2 The USPS LIED about my bees, how in the heck are bees in transit for six days at the same location (Atlanta)? When the bees made it to Tacoma, USPS LIED AGAIN! I could go on and on, but my I will stand by my comments. If it is important to you, insure it and send it Express Mail. At least there you get a guarantee of Postage back if they fail to deliver on-time, and with bees you can also file the insurance claim as bees that are now late are at risk of failing to produce. Everyone needs to be held accountable, but the only ones in this equation that had no culpability were also that ones that could claim no accountability and that is how a business should be measured. Where am I wrong?
She will fly off with some bees to a 'Congregation Site' (where Drones [males] fly in groups to "Mate". She will mate with several drones, those who have the best genetics (flight of the fittest.) And she returns (hopefully) if a bird or windshield, or weather don't get her (!) She is mated for life. And flies back to her Colony. (Hive.) She only leaves if she Swarms, or passes, (killed.) 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
Nice and informative video! Honestly, I'd be afraid to buy a package through the mail - I would feel incredibly guilty if they died in transit. I'll have to look for a local place if I ever do decide to take the plunge into beekeeping, but for now I'm going to remain a voyeur :)
Got mine today. Shipped on the 5th got them today on the 10th some dead all over the bottom of the box. Still better than having no bee’s Maybe ship on Monday might help.
@@davidhaught84 I would be willing to pay a little more for the plastic shipping cages in order to get the bees quicker. I am sure others would feel the same way.
I ship birds and only ship out on Monday if they miss the truck and sit over the weekend your finished . Monday ,Tuesday the latest. And I don't go to my local post office I go to the one at the airport . Mine if I get there before 8pm they are put directly on the plane. If you go to your local office and they have two trucks a day they will sit then may have to make a stop at a big terminal and wait for another truck than make a third trip to the air terminal. You need to find the closest acceptance point to the actual air port. It takes me 45 min to drive to the airport USPS terminal but that can save the birds sitting 8or 10 hours waiting for the truck.
have you ever thought of making a hive box that could house 4 nucs seperately in one box with the intention of putting a honey super on top of it? would you recommend doing something like that?
Several days, in a cool (room temp.) Not hot or freezing ! Add a drop of water to outside of cage. (Drop the size of a match head only at a time !) She has a candy plug to feed off to keep her going. 🐝
Interesting video David. You shipped me a package on tuesday and hopefully it comes tomorrow but you are right about the postal service. Theres no reason it shouldn't have come today.
Priority is not always 2-3 delivery - USPS doesn't guaranty it will be delivered on time. They try their best to get it there on time. At least that's what I have always been told. USPS have been great this year with getting things delivered on time however.
My package came. The regular post lady refused to deliver. It had about 12-15 bees on outside of box. Fortunately another postman shook them off and brought them.
USPS do their job thats funny, shipped a package that to drive was only 4 hours away. It took them 2 weeks after it was misplaced 2 times and ended up also in States not even close to destination
I just got a 10 frame nuke and I added a new queen and wow at first did they swarm all over it at first then it tapered down. With a 10 frame nuke I will get a crop this year cheers see my channel for my experience. I will take your advice I want to move them to my boxes
The customer should use tracking. If the nuc or package hasn’t moved in three hours call the post office in QUESTION. And ASK WHY the bees haven’t moved ASAP.
I wonder if the usps has to have time to report to local officials to log that you have bees on your property....so they can get their money for registration fees??
A friend at my dad's church is a Post Master and my dad's been with the poster service for 20 years.. I'll ask for you why that would happen. I'm curious to know myself.
I bought a nuc from a man in south TN his name is LP, he mentioned he knew you pretty well. Do you know him? New bee keeper here, loving the information.

There are tons of bee farms in my area, if I release a virgin queen in a new nuc will she return from her mating flight with any bees?
She will fly off with some bees to a 'Congregation Site' (where Drones [males] fly in groups to "Mate".
She will mate with several drones, those who have the best genetics (flight of the fittest.) And she returns (hopefully) if a bird or windshield, or weather don't get her (!) She is mated for life. And flies back to her Colony. (Hive.)
She only leaves if she Swarms, or passes, (killed.)

Awesome tips! :)
Have you ever considered shipping UPS?
Awesome thank you for information!!!
Can you share your plans to make the 2 frame nuc?
I heard today you should not split a first year hive is that true I am new to all this stuff they said it will make my hive to week going into winter.
Nice and informative video! Honestly, I'd be afraid to buy a package through the mail - I would feel incredibly guilty if they died in transit. I'll have to look for a local place if I ever do decide to take the plunge into beekeeping, but for now I'm going to remain a voyeur :)
Hello, is it the OSB plywood you use to make these 2 frame nucleuses or some other? Thank you in advance.
David, do you feed them at all, and If so, when and what?? Much thanks, joel in Montana
How many hives at that site?
Must be excellent local food sources for bees to support that many hives
Hi how are you
What Cains of bee Queens you have and how mucha it cost
Thanks 👍 I like your videos
Hi do you have a video on how you package the bees for shipping? Regards from NC
What is your success rate of the Queens being built in your two frame nucs.
Got mine today. Shipped on the 5th got them today on the 10th some dead all over the bottom of the box. Still better than having no bee’s Maybe ship on Monday might help.
Offer expidited shipping for an extra fee?
I'm in Southeast Texas and I'll get back with you David thank you
It took a week to get my packaged bees and I live in Southeast Texas. Not Barnyard Bees fault it was USPS fault. That is why I only ship UPS.
@@davidhaught84 please get plastic cages for long distances shipping then tell the customers ups and FedEx are the best for getting things on time
@@davidhaught84 I would be willing to pay a little more for the plastic shipping cages in order to get the bees quicker. I am sure others would feel the same way.
Barnyard Bees you would be surprised how many people would pay extra for better service. Also they get a re useable container.
Was wondering if anybody had a good Supply on shelving boards eight 10 12 or 16 ft prices on getting her crazy
have you ever thought of making a hive box that could house 4 nucs seperately in one box with the intention of putting a honey super on top of it? would you recommend doing something like that?
Check out Phil Chandler's Quadratic Hives. He does this. (UK Beekeeper, in Devon England.) 🐝
Why do you tip all your hives to keep water off or what. Thank you Daniel
How long can you keep a queen in a cage before placing her in a new box??
Several days, in a cool (room temp.) Not hot or freezing !
Add a drop of water to outside of cage. (Drop the size of a match head only at a time !)
She has a candy plug to feed off to keep her going. 🐝
Thank you!
How often do you get stung
Interesting video David. You shipped me a package on tuesday and hopefully it comes tomorrow but you are right about the postal service. Theres no reason it shouldn't have come today.
Injoy your videos , can quality queens be raised from a two frame nuc? Al Schneider
David, do you ship queens out priority or overnight?
Priority is not always 2-3 delivery - USPS doesn't guaranty it will be delivered on time. They try their best to get it there on time. At least that's what I have always been told. USPS have been great this year with getting things delivered on time however.
My package came. The regular post lady refused to deliver. It had about 12-15 bees on outside of box. Fortunately another postman shook them off and brought them.
USPS do their job thats funny, shipped a package that to drive was only 4 hours away. It took them 2 weeks after it was misplaced 2 times and ended up also in States not even close to destination
Do you use Glyphosat/Roundup under ur boxes???! 😳
I'm guessing that dead grass is burnt out not sprayed
Vinegar, salt, dish soap, online will guide how much of each, apply as needed, preferably at night
Do you Sand Queen to Italy ?
I'm one who lives in hawaii, how do we fix this?
FedEx, maybe?
Do you feed your two frame nucs?
I just got a 10 frame nuke and I added a new queen and wow at first did they swarm all over it at first then it tapered down. With a 10 frame nuke I will get a crop this year cheers see my channel for my experience. I will take your advice I want to move them to my boxes
The customer should use tracking. If the nuc or package hasn’t moved in three hours call the post office in QUESTION. And ASK WHY the bees haven’t moved ASAP.
I really want a Nucs for my bees next year and I need someone to make some for me 0:17
I wonder if the usps has to have time to report to local officials to log that you have bees on your property....so they can get their money for registration fees??
What your saying is that the customer doesn't get all there bees.you keep some
Can i get one of your hives? I would like to start bee keeping
