    Shaky Shimada got me 😂😂
    Fun fact about Coach Ukai's "Go change the momentum" advice to Yamaguchi: In the manga (chapter 64), there's extra scenes that didn't get adapted into this anime episode. After he said that to Yamaguchi, coach Ukai was thinking to himself: "Did I say the right words, did I reassure him? I didn't pressure him too much, did I?". And it was Takeda sensei who reminded him to not show his uneasiness in front of his players.
    I personally really like how the author, Furudate sensei chose to highlight how even someone like Coach Ukai can have his own self-doubt as a coach and as an adult!

      @@faaizsiddiqui7906 I think Noya meant that even if they end up losing, they need to fight their hardest anyways. As if you are running to get somewhere, but end up not getting there due to maybe exhaustion or running out of time, in the moment you fall because of it, if you are putting your effort on getting there, you will fall forwards since that's where your momentum and intention is going. On the contrary, if you just give up because the goal seems far, you might fall on your ass.

    I've been thinking a lot about the "next time" lines, and how they can be encouraging. A lot of people (especially myself) suffer from an "imposter syndrome", where we think we don't belong where we are, and at any moment someone might notice we don't belong and kick us out. You can suffer this in sports, in work, or in any hobby.
    Karasuno has some great players - Kageyama, Hinata, Asahi, Daichi, Nishinoya, and others - and the rest of the team might feel like "I'm not good enough, I'm not part of the starting lineup, and at any moment they might realize how bad I am and kick me out." This attitude is POISON, and it kills your desire to work hard, improve, and contribute to the team.
    When Yamaguchi goes in for the pinch serve, it feels like his entire future on the Karasuno team is on the line. He HAS to get this point, or ELSE! And he FAILS!
    But the promise of "next time" is like saying "You failed, but it's ok. We're not kicking you out, we're not rejecting you. We know how hard you've been working, and you WILL get another chance to prove yourself."
    This is the same boost in confidence that Sugawara got when he was pulled out of the match earlier - "we'll use your serving again in the future, so don't feel like you've been eclipsed by Kageyama."
    It's yet another flavor of the common theme that many of the characters feel, although most acutely expressed by Hinata and Kageyama - they want to keep playing volleyball! Work hard so you're put on the court, work hard so your team can win and play more games. Stay on the court!

    • @iizou1738
      @iizou1738 3 роки тому +12

      I think Furudate eally made the idea of "next time" a running theme/motif in Haikyuu. there are definitely a lot of instances where he snuck it in, including these moments wtih Suga & Yams ofc. huge manga spoilers (post-s4) below.
      the importance of "next time" is also heavily emphasized after the Kamomedai loss. Takeda's bench talk about preparing for the next opportunity, the recruiter's words at the end of the day (something like "today you're the losers, what will you be tomorrow?"), Ukai's advice afterward focusing on becoming stronger for next time. it was also mentioned during the MSBY v. Alders game by Kageyama, he wanted to play against Hinata again and again. iirc Kageyama lost that particular point too, but he was already looking forward to the next game/play. the list goes on lol

    • @silviaghirri
      @silviaghirri 3 роки тому +3

      @@iizou1738 Ikejiri, after they lost, asked Karasuno to win for them too, because they didn't have the possibilty to play again. Terushima said that if they hadn't lost they would be playing another game. Takeru was shown crying and saying that he wanted to play another time. Tendou said goodbye to his paradise (volleyball, the only place where he felt accepted because he was good at it) because he couldn't play any official game anymore.
      There are countless examples of a "next time", but also countless examples of the sadness that comes when you can't have another one. That's why one of my favourite lines is the one that Futakuchi said to Oikawa before their game. When Oikawa said that he doesn't need to worry because he still has "next times" to come as a 2nd year, Futakuchi said that it doesn't matter (you can think of next times only when your current one has finished, otherwise the same thing that happened to the Ohgi Minami team would happen to you)

    Coach just a little correction in the end: pinch server's name is Yamaguchi, Shimada is his teacher's name!
    About Oikawa's kneepad, during the story there's no mention about it, so this is not a spoiler: the white one should bee an orthopedic brace. The author of Haikyuu, Furudate, always gave us some trivial information about his characters at the end of his manga chapters.

      I think this was mentioned at the start of season 1 episode 7 when Karasuno had a practice match with Seijoh. The reason why Oikawa was late in the match was because of his strained knee (based on Netflix subs); hence, the white bandage, instead of a kneepad.

Some of my friends who started later have improved drastically from playing with us. Of course, there’s a time and place to do it...I wouldn’t recommend intruding on the advanced player’s trainings or scrims. If you are able to book a court and find a handful of more experienced players who are willing to play/teach you, the game will be enjoyable in no time.

      I use both, but most players prefer one side for different reasons.

      I think he did miss that Oikawa never skipped practice though. He mentioned it in one of the earlier episodes and I think it was cause he shows up late to the practice game. But I think he missed that Oikawa had an injury that he'd gotten checked out and came back when he was cleared to play.
      Regarding his attitude, the problem is that it kind of gets played up in the beginning of the anime for plot sake (so that Karasuno and the viewers don't know right away how seriously he takes Volleyball). You never actually see him late to something to flirt with girls after that one scene, but its one of the first ones you see him in other than the practice match. He does have some other personality issues (e.g. his attitude to Kageyama) but I think he gets a worse rep than he actually is.

The only injury we know for sure about is his ankle when he first appeared, the brace could just as likely be for preventing an injury as much as covering one.

    About the recycled shots I have to say that it's normal in anime, you'll find it quite a lot 😅
    Especially "simple" shots like a ball spinning in the air. It's normal to try to work smart and not hard; prepare 2 or 3 of those scenarios, change them a lil if needed and move on quickly. I actually don't mind it if it's done well and is not too obvious.

      Yeah, I actually quite like HQ's recycled shots, since they don't feel forced. For example Asahi's approach from the front angle, that one is reused but, since that action doesn't necessarily have to change, the repetition doesn't feel lazy, it's just there because, well- what else could you offer? XD the animation team uses those shots smartly, I'd say.

    The two color braces that Oikawa wears never get explained in the anime, but the author, Furudate, often aded bits and trivia about the characters at the end of the episodes, and about he's knee pad he wrote "the white pad on his right knee is, in fact, not a knee pad but a knee supporter". Like Iwaizumi said this episode, Oikawa has a tendency to overwork himself, so it's not surprising that at some point he might have hurt his knee to the point that he now needs permanent support on it when he plays. Another fun tidbit about this about him, his favorite quote is "If you're going to hit it, hit it until it breaks" and that.... that really shows the kind of person he is, really.

    I don't know if anyone has explained it but-
    Oikawa has a condition called Jumper's knee (I don't if it canon but Reddit made a thread, what is canon is that Oikawa does have a boo boo knee and since Jumpers Knee is common for Volleyball players we are assuming that's what he has), also known as patellar tendonitis, which is a condition characterized by inflammation of your patellar tendon. This connects your kneecap (patella) to your shin bone (tibia). Jumper's knee weakens your tendon, and, if untreated, can lead to tears in your tendon. Most Fans think he got it from overworking himself to the point he actually hurt himself. As someone who has friends with Jumper's Knee, I'm glad to see it represented.
    That's why when we meet him for the first time he's late cause he got injured as the coach said he did something dangerous- I love Oikawa

    "Kageyama is trying to be the best player he can be"
    That is so true, for kageyama volleyball is really important, but I won't talk more, you'll find out later in the show.
    PD: I love your reactions coach, I started playing volleyball 8 Years ago when I was 10 years old, I played in representation of my country when i was 14-15, it was in this period of time when I discovered haikyuu and it served as insipiration for me because I was bullied but volleyball helped me to make friends and to be more confident about myself, but because of things I can't handle I moved out to another country and it was really hard to me because for an young athlete as long as you are known, you have to start, not from the very bottom but from a very low position.
    Because of my experience I was able to quickly join the high-school team but I only studied the last 6 months of that year until graduation. We did very well at the local inter-highschool tournament and it made me more known, cuz nobody knew me and I was like "the new kid who came from another country to shake volleyball in the whole city" I was super happy but unfortunately there is no active regional league team to be part of, and the local authority organization for volleyball was unactive too, because here volleyball in national terms isn't very important, but it is for me.
    everything just catched me up, the fact that I graduated made me unable to play for a highschool team and things were getting worse, I got in college and I thought "I'm gonna put my best effort to get into the college team" I went to the tryouts and even tho my techique was very good I couldn't make it to the team because of my physical (I got overwheight at vacations) that's what the coach said he also invited me to train in the volleyball recreative activities and to go to the college team so I could go to tryouts nex semester. The team members saw everything good in me and when tryouts were over they asked me if i made it in and when I was coming back to play more (I feel that the team members wanted me to be part of the team) but then the pandemic and quarantine attacked and made me unable to play or to tryout and I thought my days of volleyball were over.
    Right now some courts opened and I started to play again and I couldn't be happier and I'm really happy I discovered your channel because it's helping me to train again. I really hope I can make it to the team when pandemic is over, cuz volleyball is part of my life and I don't want to quit.

    Not that I'm excusing Oikawa almost punching Kageyama, but sometimes people seem to forget that he was also just a kid at that time. He was under a lot of pressure and panic on top of being 14 who doesn't know much about emotional maturity.

      He’s a teenager who is much older than kageyama.... Im pretty sure that at 14/15.. it’s pretty common knowledge to know it’s wrong to take it out on someone violently. That’s just wrong. Period. Iwa was the same age and he knew better to stop Oikawa from hitting Kageyama because he knew it was wrong.

      He actually wouldve been 13/14 since it was in his final year of middle school. Like the poor kid was having a mental breakdown, obviously it doesn't excuse violence but it doesn't mean he also wasn't a victim. ❤️

When Oikawa almost hit Kage, it was clear that he wasn't in the right headspace. He even apologized after he realized what he almost did. Of course Iwa went to stop him and he can do so because he had a clearer mind than Oikawa at that time. About Oikawas different kneepads. I think they never really explained it in the anime, but the Author gave some trivia away. So Oikawa actually trained once so hard, that he hurted his knee, and since than he wears this kneepad to support his knee. That's also a reason, why Iwaizumi is so strict with Oikawa about him overdoing his training all the time :)

      Even if a lot of people likes a cocky childish bad loser it doesn't make the character any better. I don't think it was even designed to be liked but to show how being good looking and good at volleyball could charm people even being an asshole (like some kind of asshole idol). And the fanbase that supports him with no critizism is part of the joke without even knowing it. Obviously the Oikawa has also good traits (mostly towards improving himself as a player or to support his teammates), but aside from that... meh. At least in the penultimate arc he's nicer.

      @@OscarIna0fTimeVODs There's a difference between liking him as a person and liking him as a character. I didn't like him at first but I love his character and he does grow over the course of the series, to the point that he proudly tells Ushijima to "watch out for my junior." He's not a nice guy, he's childish, but he is a great character and ultimately, an underdog. He's not a genius like Kageyama. He practiced so hard he permanently injured his knee. And still he has to come to terms with the fact that Kageyama's going to overtake him. Such a great story.

    • @iizou1738
      @iizou1738 3 роки тому +47

      @@OscarIna0fTimeVODs I disagree that he wasn't designed to be liked. characters like Oikawa are usually popular (Dazai from Bungou Stray Dogs & Kise from KNB come to mind). he's a very well-written antagonist so it works, and as you said he has good traits as well as bad ones. it's a matter of opinion whether the good ones outweigh the bad ones. I also think he was meant to be likable, because Furudate made it so that the other characters don't take his assholish/petty behavior seriously (off the court), and they often call him out or scold him for it. it's a way of softening the audience's reaction to negative character traits, even if it doesn't work for everyone all the time.
      I wouldn't call Oikawa cocky either, because he admits many times that he's not as skilled as some other players. it's more like he puts on a show of bravado. it's understandable if that still rubs you the wrong way, but cocky isn't the right word.
      edited for grammar/clarity

    a common fan theory for oikawa's mismatched knee pads is that he had a knee injury in the past, so one of them is a knee brace. It ties well into his habit of overworking himself and his ankle injury in the practice match, so it's spread as canon by a lot of people.
