The generally preferred setup for ion beams seems to be to have a "core" of ion beams deep in the ship, that are combined as desired (most efficient is in a binary tree, i.e. two beams combine at one crystal, two two-beam crystals combine at another, and so on) and then shoot out through a narrow "barrel" in the ship's structure. Also I would suggest to have at least two ships in your fleet: A combat ship, and a mining/salvage ship. That way, you can reduce storage on your combat ship down to a minimum, especially on one that doesn't use ammo.
Likewise a quick fix for his current ship is to have one of his front beams shoot across to aim to the other. Then you have 2 1-beam lasers combining, can remove the front crystal, and the giant shadow in front of his large laser will be removed.
How about using scaffolding as a "conduit" to bend the beam through the ship. For instance if you firing your towards the center of the ship with a "conduit" style series of prisims leading it towards the front of the ship you could use it a spine weapon. Or you can have your main outbound prisms in the outer corners protected by the shield which would be farther forward and let them have a open area to target, Combining this with the conduit you could send the beam from one side of the ship to the other if you get damaged on one side. The possibilities are really inspiring me, Dammit quill you got me to buy the game!
The best part about playing multi player, I made a massive ship that makes all the stuff and can hold a massive amount of cargo, and my buddy made a fast fighter that protects and mercs.
Yay another episode! I really like watching you learn and discover a new game, especially with some random help with chat or comments to help you navigate things. Usually not my type of game
Put both ion beams and the prisms next to each other in the middle, with the aiming prisms in front of them, and 2 large shields next to the ion beams.
This is a great series. There are lots of mods adding more to the game and higher enemy numbers. Malthis mods, Star Wars mod, they add end game content and higher grade shields, reactors, lasers. Star Wars mod has HUNDREDS of ship, fighter, and station blueprints
you should have a look at your crew spooling up your hyperdrives in 1x speed, of course not everytime but I find it really satisfying to watch/listen to. Love this game so much! Great series bud
iirc way back when I played this in the alpha/early beta, walking through rooms and doors is slow. So having a ship with good connectivity with corridors could make or break a ship. Now I don't know if that has changed and I have not seen any evidence either way, but it could be worth thinking about when designing your ships. Edit: Also the hyperdrive was more efficient when put in center of mass.
I usually just build cargo bays onto the back of my ship with wreckage, while harvesting massive wrecks. Like carrying all your groceries in one trip, break down the cargo bays when you get back to the station.
How about two large shield generators where the small ones are, but forward a bit so they are parallel to, or ahead of, the prisms. Also, there's no reason to have the ion beams and initial prisms pointing forward, is there?
Looking forward to more of this for sure! I did notice that you pick the reactor as your main target to disable the ship, instead of the command deck. I remember you mentioned earlier that the command deck also disables the ship. I think blowing up the reactor is doing a lot of damage to the ship that could be avoided, and reducing the value of the salvage (since it explodes hard when you blow it up).
Thank you for highlighting this game, as I hadn't heard of it. Having seen you play this game, I wanted it so badly I broke my golden rule of only buying games on discount. It's a good price tho', and worth every penny. I love it! Okay, I must be off, I just found a ships graveyard and I'm going to strip every wreck I can find.
Here's a crazy idea: check for inspiration on anime and sci--fi movies regarding ship designs, choose the ones that tickle your fancy, and work from there. And use this design to workbench and test how different systems interact with each other and refine your final design with that info.
My ships are complete different, I design by function and game mechanics, looks last since shape does not matter in space. Internal thrusters, cage around them. Speed and range and accuracy, point defense. As few hallways as possible. Upgrade often, money in the bank is useless unless save up. A tips is to include expanding extra cargo as you go, then remove when sell.
just put out more of these already!! lol (you have almost made me buy this one.. thought I thought I already owned it.. guess I played the heck outa the demo)
What about an array of ion stuff facing to the middle of the ship and a row of crystals in the middle bringing the beam to the front , two big shield arrays on bOth sides for the rest of the ship and 2 small shields in the middle where the last crystal is like the Death Star laser dish
I don't get the shields not working. the other focus cristals aren't seeming to effect your two side shields. Why would the front crystal effect the front shield i'm confused.
@@GoreGutztheImpaler I haven’t played the game it’s just what I saw from this video that he couldn’t put armor in front of the larger one but can for the smaller ones
Beams and prisms always force ppl to design beetle type of ships since those are the only ones that can somehow protect the prisms ... still IF you don t keep a fast ship who can keep at distance against heavy fast close combat enemy u tend to do badly with beams OW and prisms forces you to use only med shilds sadly ...
the shield is so huge that I think you dont have to put it in the front can you not put in insde and just leave the no build zone alone? I have never play the game so I might have miss something
IMO never combine ion beams, they lose 25% damage per beam (multiplicative addition). You always do more damage with no combination. OTOH most people do combine beams, I wish I knew why. I never do it. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe everyone else is wrong. Who knows?
What's your point? If you have two of them, only one will be use. Railguns are a total waste. The crew will refuse to man the ammo loader, so they are never going to fire a shot. This game is total garbage.
@@xerxes8632 Railguns? I'm talking about ion beams. You can put a diamond on the front and it will act like a turret. Multiple beams striking the same target can do great damage.
@@Mastikator The power is close, beds not close. Yesterday I was thinking the ship is too big. Everything I want to place is always too far from something.
24:14 You didn't. Your ship went into its saved engagement range. You completely missed the pirate cache at the end of the video that the pirate was guarding btw.
went looking at ship designs after watching this; someone has already made the Death Star
What do you mean "already"? The game is 2 years old

yep, abd then 2 large shields on either side of the final beam channel will cover each other and the ship.

captain cafeine's cosmoteer guides are excellent highly recommend

The non symetry in the front ems of the ship is friving me nuts!
It comes up a lot since some part have an odd numbered width, and others even numbered.
I suggest captain caffeine's cosmoteer guides. He does one each topic, one is about beams, one is about defenses, etc.
You can load any ship designs in the game into the ship editor to see how they work or as a start point for your own modifications.

the last ship was there because a cache of good loot, you see it when you zoom in and out
Yep, I had very similar painful realisation with my heavy shield. :-)
Love this game!
I hope you'll keep playing till you have a huge fleet to manage and have tried many different kinds of ships.
Hi Martin!
I'm going to buy this game now.
I know you are doing a lot of asymmetrical ships but even still consider using mirror mode can save a lot of time when doing doors and such

Large shields are blocked by objects. Small ones do not have this issue.
Loving this!!
Everytime I see Cosmoteer, I see Cosmother, which I assume is a mother who dresses in strange clothes. LOL
WoW, episode 5?
Spoil us you do!
There are in-game data base of ships designs of like 10000 ships that you can build.

I think it's a large shield only issue as the large shield is also can't have armor directly in front of it while the smaller ones can.
Like mechanically it's a balance feature. Larger shield is balanced out by the fact that you need to be more careful where you place it.

Funny to see you sell all your hyperium to them realize you need it for the hyperdrive

two ships?
I'm not sure why you worry so much about doors costing resources - they're a single coil each, and basic coils are dirt cheap.
Nothing wrong with asymmetrical ship design. Look at the Millenium Falcon
