When I first heard that voice, I thought he would hurt himself singing like that. It was either on Kate McCannon or 13 Silver Dollars. It's so interesting to hear you and Chuck talk about his voice and his guitar playing. It reinforces my opinion of Colter. He has explained why he changed his style of singing by taking some lessons. He also said that he favored Waylon Jennings when he started. Notice the hat and vest he has on in this video. I love how he is keeping the "western" in country and western, and bringing back people like Jimmy Rogers.
I think this is his best work as a songwriter and a picker. He definitively made a dive after this record into being almost strictly a cowboy songwriter. And while some of my favorite shit is on the subsequent albums, I do long for him to go back to the more folky style of this song specifically, but this album generally.
