Opinions differ on DFD... Some call his voice feeble and his singing a whisper, others attest to his great use of a variety of vocal and interpretive gifts.. Perhaps he sounded more impressive live than on his recordings…? I believe my singing teacher, who often saw - and heard! - DFD live and said: „It was as if the voice came from every square centimeter of the body. He was able to use every tiny corner of his body available as a resonance chamber. Indeed, Fischer-Dieskau was and is a rather controversial singer. I do think that perhaps his interpretations are more intellectually provocative than they are vocally spectacular, at least when it comes to his recordings. However, I trust also the opinion of your singing teacher, and can attest that I have seen a lot of comments (even from his detractors) which say that despite the way DFD's voice comes off on record, it was very resonant and carried a lot of weight. For those who crave ONLY spectacular voices DFD will always be the wrong choice, for those who are more open-minded he is a very interesting singer to turn to.
