what is the best way to seal your cement work I had a bunch of mushrooms I made and I feel them with polyurethane quite a bit and now it's all peeling off water first
I don't know what ie best. But after I paint using acrylic paint colors, I first use Minwax polycrylic let that dry then I use Rustoleum Crystal clear spray paint one coat dry then another coat. I hope this helps. Where are you from Wanda?

Oh my! Thank you for viewing. It was a lot of trial and error. I use mortar mix for larger items because it's already to go just add water. I use portland cement mostly to make hypertufa items and my papercrete. I use papercrete or cement clay on smaller items or to make embellishments because it is moldable 😀 I don't experiment much any more as I have learned what works best for me on a particular project. I'm sorry I have another question is it always best to mix your mortar mix with sand I never see you do that so I'm not sure if you do or not I use Portland and I always put sand in mine .. I'm not good with change but I'm up for it I have to have instructions hahaha I can read all day and it don't sink in
If you are using Portland Cement yes absolutely you need Sand. mortar mix already has sand in it so no need to add extra sand. I do not mind the question😊
I made a dress wire form out of tomato cages and wire. 3 years ago. I bought chicken wire to cover it but I haven’t gotten to it as it got put on the back burner. Mainly due to grieving over 3 lost loved ones. Where my seasons of grieving and weeping has passed and I’m in a season of celebration with being able to celebrate life…. I am beyond stoked that I will have my first granddaughter in October. I got to see her in the ultrasound; indeed it was a very happy moment and quite fun because she had the hiccups and I am known to have R H ( Random Hiccups) so she gets that from grandma!!!…I have that excitement when you hear your child say momma or dadda for the first time. Lastly; Your gnome is so cute…I wuv it!!! I admire your whimsy talent…thats right up my alley…’Hangin With The Gnomes’ and 3 little birds sittin on my door step singing 🎶 I gotta message for you-hoo-hoo😊🎶I P.S. What ya going to name your gnome? It would be sad to see him nameless😂my suggestion would be Eggbert😂…or Haggis.., I like unusual names, they seem to stick in my mind. Oh… my original idea for my dress form was to make a plant form; plant up with hens and chicks, ivy and various sedums. You changed my mind and inspired me to make it a concrete form and leave the top half open enough to be a plant container holder. Thank you gazzillions 😊for all the inspiration! ❤❤❤

He's 9 and has some emotional things so he needs a lot of time. Ive started sewing dolls as I can put that down when he has needs. Cement won't wait for me to come back lol. Hello Beth. Yes I do sell my Gnomes. If this is the Gnome you are interested in he is $215.00 not including shipping. I do not keep these in stock. I make one when it is ordered. It takes about 3 months as the cement needs to cure. Another thing is, if you are local to the Mesa AZ area you can come to my studio to purchase. If you are not local, shipping would most likely be cost prohibitive for most folks these are heavy at least 60 pounds.

These are dry, disposable, cloth cleaning towels that come on a roll or folded flat in a package Apparently "Handiwipes" are not available but here is what you are needing. I just love these gnomes and want to make one of my own! Instead of the quick-setting mortar, do you think it would be OK to use quick-setting concrete mix instead? It says its for vertical applications and I can get it in a 10-pound container. I like the 10-pound one because I'm older and have trouble lifting these 40-pound or heavier bags. But do you think a 10-pounder will make enough product to complete my gnome? Thanks for making this great video!!
Hello Penny Thank you for finding me😊 and for your question.You could probably use fast setting cement. When you are ready to do the sculpting part it would just need to be stiff enough that it stays where you put it. I feel you Penny I am 60 and those bags are heavy. The guys at the store load them for me and then my hubby puts them wherebI need them in my work area. Sometimes I do have to move them myself though. Ten pounds will not be enough. I think my bag was 40 pounds. It will take all of 40 pounds because we are also lining the inside of the gnome. Penny, Remember to use your saftey gear and mix small batches because the mortar mix will set fast in your mixing bowl. I am excited to see your progress😊 Let me know if you have any other questions.

I do have one more--Right now I have my armature (tomato cage) covered with the somewhat stiff plastic that bottled water comes in--not the bottles but rather the packaging the bottles are in. I've used masking tape to keep it in place, but my main concern is that the cement-covered cloth I plan to use will not stick or stay in place. Any thoughts on this? Thanks so much!!!
@@penniepackard8303 In the video I wrapped the tomato cage in small square chicken wire and the cement coated fabric will stick to that. Your fabric will slide off plastic. But if I have to do it over and buy the chicken wire in the end anyway, guess I should just go ahead and do it right the first time!! You mentioned coating him on the inside so do you use the coated fabric inside like you do on the outside or just cement alone? Thanks again for your expertise & willingness to share! By the way, does your gnome have a name?
@@penniepackard8303 I line the inside with the concrete alone. I use just enough concrete on the inside to cover all of the armature on the inside to make it look finished and add strength to the structure. Your nylon mesh could work. What ever you use just needs to hold the cement soaked fabric. 😊 Are you here in Arizona Penny?

He looks like one of the 7 dwarves. This was so much fun to watch. I wish I could have seen how you did the toes better. How many toes does he gave? I started doing cement crafts this last summer. I've done a fairy bowl garden and some little sock gnomes. A few caterpillars and a few crosses. I havent done anything this big, but I really want to now.

Thank you for your question. If I see I will have a larger amount left over I make a small project out of it like a small flower pot. If I have a small amount of mortar, I pour it on the dirt by my trash can and let it hsrden then throw it in the trash can. For general clean up you may want to wear your mask as you will kick up dust. Use a scraper to get any hardened cement from your work surface and floor. Put that in your trash bin. I use damp paper towels to clean up the dust from my work table and an old damp mop for my floor. Never rinse your mop or towels or instruments in your sink. You do not want cement in your plumbing. I use my hose outside. Maybe I can do a video on this topic. I read about cement safety online and watched other UA-camrs like you are as I was learning. Let me know if this helps. Hi Venna, I read a comment from one of your subscribers where she mentions that she wants to buy her cement in 10 lb bags because the larger inesvare too heavy. I have the same problem. I'm 66 and i have rheumatoid arthritis, lupus , fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis among other things. I've had both knees replaced and recently had surgery to remove colon cancer. I asked the guys at home Depo if they could divide a 94 lb bag of Portland cement so it would be easier to handle. They divided it into several smaller bags for me. Maybe they could do that for for you too.

Oh dear I am sorry. Your mortar mix just needs water added. Add only a little water at a time until you get the workable consistency you want. Remember the mortar will begin to set in your mixing bowl so keep it moving. You know give it a stir with your gloved hand as you dip in for you next scoop to apply to your sculpture. I just love these gnomes and want to make one of my own! Instead of the quick-setting mortar, do you think it would be OK to use quick-setting concrete mix instead? It says its for vertical applications and I can get it in a 10-pound container. I like the 10-pound one because I'm older and have trouble lifting these 40-pound or heavier bags. But do you think a 10-pounder will make enough product to complete my gnome? Thanks for making this great video!!
Hello Penny Thank you for finding me😊 and for your question.You could probably use fast setting cement. When you are ready to do the sculpting part it would just need to be stiff enough that it stays where you put it.
I feel you Penny I am 60 and those bags are heavy. The guys at the store load them for me and then my hubby puts them wherebI need them in my work area. Sometimes I do have to move them myself though.
Ten pounds will not be enough. I think my bag was 40 pounds. It will take all of 40 pounds because we are also lining the inside of the gnome.
Penny, Remember to use your saftey gear and mix small batches because the mortar mix will set fast in your mixing bowl.

I do have one more--Right now I have my armature (tomato cage) covered with the somewhat stiff plastic that bottled water comes in--not the bottles but rather the packaging the bottles are in. I've used masking tape to keep it in place, but my main concern is that the cement-covered cloth I plan to use will not stick or stay in place. Any thoughts on this? Thanks so much!!!
@@penniepackard8303 In the video I wrapped the tomato cage in small square chicken wire and the cement coated fabric will stick to that. Your fabric will slide off plastic.

@@VennasNature I was also considering nylon net instead of the chicken wire, mainly to save a bit of money. But if I have to do it over and buy the chicken wire in the end anyway, guess I should just go ahead and do it right the first time!! You mentioned coating him on the inside so do you use the coated fabric inside like you do on the outside or just cement alone? Thanks again for your expertise & willingness to share! By the way, does your gnome have a name?
@@penniepackard8303 I line the inside with the concrete alone. I use just enough concrete on the inside to cover all of the armature on the inside to make it look finished and add strength to the structure.
Your nylon mesh could work. What ever you use just needs to hold the cement soaked fabric. 😊

He looks like one of the 7 dwarves. This was so much fun to watch. I wish I could have seen how you did the toes better. How many toes does he gave? I started doing cement crafts this last summer. I've done a fairy bowl garden and some little sock gnomes. A few caterpillars and a few crosses. I havent done anything this big, but I really want to now.

What do you do with leftover mortar? What about cleanup?

If I see I will have a larger amount left over I make a small project out of it like a small flower pot.
If I have a small amount of mortar, I pour it on the dirt by my trash can and let it hsrden then throw it in the trash can.
For general clean up you may want to wear your mask as you will kick up dust. Use a scraper to get any hardened cement from your work surface and floor. Put that in your trash bin. I use damp paper towels to clean up the dust from my work table and an old damp mop for my floor.
Never rinse your mop or towels or instruments in your sink. You do not want cement in your plumbing.
I use my hose outside.
Maybe I can do a video on this topic.
I read about cement safety online and watched other UA-camrs like you are as I was learning.

Hi Venna, I read a comment from one of your subscribers where she mentions that she wants to buy her cement in 10 lb bags because the larger inesvare too heavy.
I have the same problem. I'm 66 and i have rheumatoid arthritis, lupus , fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis among other things. I've had both knees replaced and recently had surgery to remove colon cancer.
I asked the guys at home Depo if they could divide a 94 lb bag of Portland cement so it would be easier to handle. They divided it into several smaller bags for me. Maybe they could do that for for you too.

You do not tell how you mix the mortar in any of the steps being new to this I don't know how you mix it in each step please help .
Oh dear I am sorry. Your mortar mix just needs water added. Add only a little water at a time until you get the workable consistency you want. Remember the mortar will begin to set in your mixing bowl so keep it moving. You know give it a stir with your gloved hand as you dip in for you next scoop to apply to your sculpture.
