Today is the year of 2024, and I'm here watchin this masterpiece again and again from day till night and listenin while i sleep like it's bed time story
"You said it yourself, Kain. There are only two sides to your coin." "Apparently so. But suppose you throw a coin enough times. Suppose one day, it lands on its edge."
@@KalvinEllis Dante is a hack compared to Amy Hennig, yeah he was influential but the Inferno-Paradiso trilogy were kind of meh but quotes and whole monologues I have memorized from this because its just delicious. I particularly love Soul Reaver 1s intro monologue but Dante up there recognizes yet another great example of superb dialogue
Same same. " _That'll be 30$. Would you like something else with this?_ " " _I know what ominous hour this was for my wallet's history. A sense of vertigo and longing crept over me as I pulled out the dollars --- and handed them over to the great manipulator, the servants of hunger._ "
Ahh, I thought I'm the only one. These games have a great shakespearen vocabulary and an elegant manner of speech with these monologues and dialogues!:D
@@horvathmark8831 And now for a moment try imagining a translation of the series' entire script into our own language which is three times as expressive as English is. Every single sentence would be at least two times longer. xD
"This is what I seek", the manager said as he grabbed my cash. "The ineffable fulcrum upon which our society turns," the merchant went on. And as the feeling of dread washed over me, I held the game in my hand, the sense of self-loathing and despair grew too great for me to contain.
If only that video had subtitles option. My English is not that advanced, Goddammit. I could've change that with it, because watching with original subs is incredibly helpful for learning purposes (and for understanding 100%, obviously)
I can't believe you got/recorded all the cutscenes of ALL the games, put them in the right order, showed a bit of gameplay prior and after the cutscenes and give context with text. You're straight up a legend. Gonna buy some popcorn to fully enjoy this monster of a video. Thanks for making this!
Snobby Gamer I'll give you that it's a great ending to how Raziel and Kain change their fates, but it in no way wraps up Kain's true fate. What does he do now with the correct soul reaver blade? Does he kill the elder God? Who knew fate had to be changed so that Raziel could be well equipped at the right time to enter the blade so that Kain could truly be the scion of balance? I could go on for days.......
Blood Omen 2 was what happened in the PAST after the timeline was shifted when Kain pulled the sword from Raziel. The event you're talking about happened to young Kain after Soul Reaver 2. Technically it is an event after Defiance, it is not the Elder Kain's ending. We are all looking for Kain's story to come to a completion.. His story stops after fighting the Elder God and he never filled his role as the scion of Balance, the pillars are still in ruin. Kain's story should end with him restoring to pillars which his death would have never done being that humans were too weak to sustain them.
I bet they're gonna remix it again for the upcoming game ...! Ahhhh ... I just can't wait for the day I hear it remixed again in for the new sequel lol
I would be fine with remasters to play in modern consoles; but I would like to be surprised ❤ Most of all, the ost of soul reaver is like seeing a comet, happens every hundred years xD that intro brooooo
Martin Papos you mean just reuse the voice lines from the older games? They might be able to do that but they probably wouldn’t opt to reuse old assets
@@steeveewuzzheer1992 I think they have some incentive to reuse the old assets. The quality of the voice work is pretty damn high for its time aside from Blood Omen 1 (a bit too crunchy now)
No, No, and a Thousand Times more No. If they remade it, rebirthed it, or even reimagined it, they'd f-k it apart. Filled, to the brim, with microtransactions and shit. " _Play as Sarafan Raziel! Now in this weeks EXCLUSIVE lootbox!_ " You cannot trust modern game devs.
My strongest memory of Soul Reaver is that Raziel's feet sounded like a pair of flip flops :) Nearly every single cutscene begins with him opening a door and walking on stone floor while making those flip flop sounds
id say he sounds more like an elephant walking on a hardwood floor. i love how "sneaking" is literally no quieter and includes a dragging sound, yet somehow you can get literally right on top of an enemy and bear hug them without them noticing.
Seriously you have no idea how much this series means to me. It helped me get through the worst spell ive had in my life. The fact that you made this "movie" brings me so much joy
@@PerfectHandProductions it was honestly by sheer accident and a whiff of nostalgia that brought me here 3 years back. My dad used to play blood omen 1 and i never knew there were sequels
Hmmm... perhaps Kain was actually telling Raziel not to test eternity? Raziel himself did everything he could to prolong his eventual destiny of becoming one with the Soul Reaver.
I just rationalised this as the Elder god eternally lying to Raziel. I wouldn't be surprised if the story continued to show that the Elder god pissed off Raziel on purpose to make him accept his destiny in defiance.
This came out 26 years ago and the line, "Call your dogs! They can feast on your corpses!" Is still the most bad ass thing I've ever heard in a video game. It's the most badass thing I've heard outside Shakespeare.
She is the best storyteller I've ever come across across all media. I haven't seen anything as layered as her SR1/2/Defiance storyline...with such great dialogue and sooo many angels, anywhere.
@@jeanlundi2141I wouldn't go that far, but I can't deny the fact that the dialouge in LoK is some of if not the most compelling in video games. A fantastic script further elevated by enthralling vocal preformances.
@theredcomet5670, I've read over the last couple of days that so many more people hold Amy Hennig, in a very similar regard. I too, at first, thought perhaps the sentiment was being applied to hastily. But no! She truly is a master story teller, an astute student of history and mythology. Not to even mention the religious elements (that do nothing but add to the story mind you). It's clear, Amy knows how to construct a world that feels in tandem to our own, real.
Interestingly enough, each of the vampires in Kain's clan are named after Angels or people from the Bible or Kabbalah. There are some characters named from other mythologies as well. From Raziel to Turel. Characters such as Turel are named after the Angel Turiel. In these cases, the name in the game is also an accepted spelling of the Angel name. As it is, the Angels are as follows: Raziel: "Secret of God, The Keeper of Secrets, and Angel of Mysteries." Raziel is a major Angel in Jewish mysticism. Turel or Turiel: One of the Watchers from the Book of Enoch, a fallen Angel, his name translates to "Rock of God". He is one of the 20 leaders of 200 Angels. Melchiah: This is one of the examples where there are a lot of different spellings of the name. He was a high priest and a decendant of Aaron. Zephon: There are multiple stories with this name. There are two different Angel origins of this name. In the Canaanite religion he is identified with Jebel Aqra, the home of God, from which Yam (A Canaanite sea deity) was cast out. In the Kabbalistic "Treatise on the Left Emanation" by Isaac ha-Cohen of Soria, Zephon (called Tzephon) is one of the angels associated with the 6th sephira, Tiphereth. Rahab: In Jewish folklore, Rahab is a sea monster. Dumah: The Angel of Silence and of the stillness of death. Dumah is considered a "Thousand eye Angel of death armed with a flaming sword." Kain is likely named after Cain, the first murderer. Honorable mentions... Malek or Maalik: A guardian of Hell in Islamic mythology. Vorador: Vorador's name may come from the Spanish/Portugese word, “devorador”, which means “devourer”, “ravenous”, and “wolfish.” Ariel: Ariel is an Angel found within Jewish mysticism and the Christian Apocrypha. The name means: "Lion of God". This name is also found within the Book of Enoch. Many of the bosses in Blood Omen 2 are named after Shakespearean Characters. I find the naming of these characters fascinating as they are ANCIENT names in many ways and I think it is impressive.
Well yes. Let's not forget originally Soul Reaver was meant to be the story of an Fallen Angel climbing it's way back up into Heaven to Confront God. They realized that, this would actually fit nicely in a dark twist in the Legacy of Kain setting, with Kain being God in this case, casting his greatest Lieutenant Raziel into the Lake of the Damned.
I think with all the occultic mysticism the writers imposed on this story, they must have been strongly motivated by the mysticism of ancient religions as well. The book of Enoch itself is quite occult in its own right, unveiling mysteries surrounding the Abrahamic faiths unknown to most. The Canaanites' history only scarcely alluded to in Hebrew lore, who's secrets were buried in their being conquered. I'm a biblical studies major and I get the same "feeling" or allure toward unveiling the secrets of scripture as I get from untangling the secrets of the lore in this game. I suspect much the same for LoK's writers.
BEST... STORY... IN A VIDEO GAME... EVAH!!! No seriously- this is a story more for books than video games. The gameplay is not the strenght of LoK games, but the sotry, the voice acting and music create one of the most deep and compelling experiences in storytelling.!
There was going to be...well I don't know about the conclusion, but there was going to be another Legacy of Kain that wound up in Development Hell...v.v sad fate. I would love to see this series return.
I'd like a conclusion... But no. I don't want one. I don't trust them to do it. Just hire Amy Henning and a couple of writers and some artist to make a final book instead. Now that's something I would trust.
Idk if they can finish it either since some of the voice actors passed away so I feel like it wouldn't be the same without the amazing voice actors and dialogue. :3
It's been 9 years and still, every now and then, nostalgia brings me back to this video when things aren't great. I can't thank you enough for making it. This franchise means a lot to me and you, maybe on a whim, made my darker times a bit brighter by making this video.
Honestly same. When things get hard and seem impossible, watching two heroes in circumstances more dire than our own who know even a deity world against them actively, actively making moves and sacrifices without immediate payoff over the course of centuries before finally getting hope by end of game 5. Constantly being forced to pick between options 1 or 2, given ultimatums where neither benefit the chooser and the heroes demonstrate the necessary willpower to force a third outcome is inspiring. I do the same thing.
I got goosebumps when I heard this line in Soul Reaver 2 and realised Moebius postponed Malek from reaching The Circle in time. I must confess Moebius is my most hated villain in my entire life. It's been almost 18 years and my hatred for him is still burning. A thousand deaths would not be enough punishment for him.
I guess anything more would be good. However this material is elevated by the masterful voice work. This stuff without the voices would be like Star Wars without the music 😃
XaiverStash From what I have read which isn't much. That game doesn't tap too much into he story it does however show what some of the clans looked like before the fall of kains empire which is pretty interesting.
***** It is interesting. My only complaint about Nosgoth is that it does not really have a story. The game does not even mention anything about the universe. If one is not familiar with Legacy of Kain, or Soul Reaver, they would just think it is just a random game about Vampires VS Humans. I would have liked it if the Devs would have tied a story into something. Leaves a Fan hungering for more lore.
XaiverStash it was the multiplayer part of dead sun, dead sun was mostly complete before being scrapped and didnt have much connection to previous games because it was set a few thousand years after these games. soul reaver is gone man.
+XaiverStash that is why, when I played Soul Reaver 2, the natural to me was to play the previous parts in order to immerse in the plot, then I found Soul Reaver (second part of the series) the best of all, and then went further
@@steeveewuzzheer1992 It kind of is and kind of isnt. Its the worst in the quadrilogy quality-wise but at the same time not knowing its story leaves a large gap between BO1 and SR1. It kinda fits between there, chronologically.
Such a wonderful thing you have done by putting all this together. Words cannot explain how much Legacy of Kain means to me. I played them all from the first and hung on every word. No story will ever be as elaborate, as focused, as exciting and as deep as this. There are modern adventure stories which are more political in nature that delve deeply into their life, but I personally find political stories dull, to much like real life. This story is so involved.
Legacy of Kain has been and will probably always be my favorite game franchise. It makes me happy to know there are still people out there who appreciate it. Thanks for watching and for the nice comment.
Wow so deep! “Tell me Raziel, did it trouble you when you killed your brethren?” Kain said that as a joke knowing that Raziel killed his human brethren..... priceless
@@trevorevans4000 Well, I think Onyx has the right of it being in reference when Raziel confronts his former brethren Dumah and Rahab in Soul Reaver 2, as Raziel exhudes almost elation from understanding Kain's private joke centuries ago.
@@stevenmcelroy2646 I actually feel it somewhat appropriate that there was never a definitive conclusion as the game is such a mish-mash of intertwined storylines, I kind of FEEL that it is better to not have an ending as that would be too conclusive and goes against what the entire series stood for. It sure would have been nice to have a good conclusive ending but in a way - it fits the series to have none and to leave it up to each person's individual mind. In my personal head canon Kain destroys or at least permanently subdues the Elder God and restores the pillars to vampire guardianship.. but this ending would be way too "enlightened/just" to fit the story properly.
Hahahahaha this comment is actually amazing!! This sentence explains it all!! Imagine if the sarafan Raziel also had a reaver blade... It would be "... so mad at yourself you stabbed yourself with yourself while trying to stab yourself with yourself!!"
What Dark Souls does with item descriptions, The Legacy of Kain does with prolific and alluring script and voice-acting. Thanks so much for this upload!
@@alfonsovallejo2665 I'd agree and state LoK does better doing the opposite of what dark souls does as with its story. When DS plays around its homework, when LoK plays around with its story its "OH SHIT! The thing I thought I knew was a falsehood and this twist makes things even tastier!" LoK revels while DS implies with their stories.
Kain viewed Vorador as some antique, egotistical blowhard. Which is ironic considering Kain became somewhat of an antique, egotistical blowhard. Even Raziel seemed to thought so when he said "spare me your metaphors, Kain." Or when he said "Very poetic, Kain."
The entire series is that one line Raziel aimed at Kain during soul reaver 2: "Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens... I don't think I have the stomach for it." Edit: As chaotic as it is, Raziel's right 99.9% of the time. Kain shows up and ether he's doing a monumental and terrible thing -on purpose or by complete accident- or _IS_ the monumental and terrible thing. He literally can't stop one-upping himself wherever he goes and that's why I love the series.
I was 17 years old when this was released. Even my brother, then 16, knew this was a masterpiece. We both followed each little piece of this enthralling story as it unfolded for us. This story puts most modern games to shame. The voice acting hasn't even been match but a handful of times over the 2 decades since. I would really appreciate another entry into this fascinating universe.
Voice actors Paul Lukather and Tony Jay have both passed away. Michael Bell, Richard Doyle, and Rene Auberjonois are all seventy or older. We're slowly losing much of the talent behind Legacy Of Kain.
PerfectHandVideos I know it. We will lose that generation as well. Thanks for the uploads by the way. This video certainly deserves a whole lot more views for all the effort you did in compiling it, and the great story produced here by those involved in the original products. Thanks again.
+PerfectHandVideos We must figure out a way to Revive them both. They can't just die on us and leave us hanging with the Legacy of Kain Defiance Cliff hangar. Someone quick!! Grab 2 Copies of the Soul Reaver and alter the events so we can bring Tony Jay and Paul Lukather back to LIFE!!
Raziel, to Kain: "Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens... I don't think I have the stomach for it." That's it. That's the entire Legacy of Kain series in an eloquent nutshell.
"before him he carries noise, and behind him he leaves tears. Death, that dark spirit, in ’s nervy arm doth lie, Which, being advanced, declines, and then men die." Act 2 Scene 1. The Tragedy of Coriolanus. Volumnia.
I'm starting my first year as a Computer Science & Game Design major because of this series. Hennig is and will always be one of the best writers in the industry.
I started playing this series when I was 8. Now I’m 27 and I’m still amazed everytime I think about it. Probably the best storyline ever wrote in gaming. Dialogues and game development above the rest. It helped me a lot when I was younger…to look for the best, to be better, to somehow fulfill my destiny, to become who I’m meant to be. And seeing that someone made THE video about all of it…makes me happy. Congrats buddy
You ever stare at the voice acting in Silent Hill or Resident Evil....then you pop in the Legacy of Kain and just go "How do you fuck up voice acting?" Cause this will hold up for a century. And then look at the jump between the cutscenes in Legacy of Kain and Soul Reaver. They did a fantastic job.
Legacy of Kain really came before its time, released at the moment where (probably) most of us were young had limited attention span, poor English comprehension and overshadowed by the peak of first-person shooters or hardcore RPGs.
it came out really right at the needed time. if it was to be released nowadays they probably wont even do that because the plot is to huge to cover by modern game design standarts and it's also probably too advanced for modern gamers as some of studies think of us, so it might be old & poor in terms of gameplay mechanic but this is exactly what made this game possible
Probably true, yet I would've really wanted to see this franchise in at least the previous generation to give the titles fair attention by the gaming community. Maybe too impudent wish? Granted there is "Soul Revenant": A fan-made remake of the first Soul Reaver, however still on-going.
+Ohem1 I think it came out at the right time. It came during an era where you only had board games, card games, or those computer games like pinball and minesweeper to play if you didn't use/have a console. This meant gamers were willing to dedicate themselves to a video game that wasn't going to just be over after a pedestrian 10 hours of gameplay. Today's gaming community accepts a garbage standard of just good graphics and nothing but online gameplay. You have the exceptional adventure game from time to time but even their dialogue isn't as dense as Legacy of Kain. The first game of the series I played was Soul Reaver back when I was 6 years old in 1999. I had to pause the game so I could grab a dictionary to understand some of the words they were saying. It was my first exposure to vocabulary beyond a classroom. Some damn good memories. I recently decided to buy Blood Omen about 2 years ago. I hesitated because even with my low standards for graphics, I thought those graphics would be too bad for me to accept. It ended up probably being the most fun I've ever had playing a game. My favorite game in the series by far and that is saying a lot for me because I was absolutely in love with Soul Reaver. Just cherish the memories my friend. Hopefully if my PS2 still works and I can find my PS1 somewhere in my garage, Ill have my kids play the whole series when I start a family.
Da Beast gamers is not the problem, people would still play games like this. Look at Dark Souls, Dota, CS & SC2 - even they take really much effort people still enjoy them. It's just that making a game with good graphics is much easier than making a good game overall so the studios dont even bother making one because of greed and just spam those assain creeds & whatever just to get more money.
My emotional relationship with the games agree with you on most, with respect to your preferences I do consider Blood Omen 2 to be the worst game representing LoK. While I can respect the groundwork of Kain ascending into power it's manipulative use of language is lit up by its absence, uncanny semi-erotic character designs and yet explained events and circumstances to be heard. I find it appalling how the team responsible didn't absolve the whole nuance the series are known for but instead went the direction marketing accords. I still reserve the notion the series could've been more appreciated in later generation, but so did expenses in development. The creative freedom might not've been so arrested to cover mass appeal in the past as it is now, so in practice you might be right about that.
"You are a righteous fiend aren't you?" -Seraphim Razial "Apparently I am..." -Razial That is still one of the most written dialogue in anything. Equal parts, sad, funny, and awesome in the same moment.

The oodest thing is I started from Blood Omen 2, but then got to play all the other games. Basically, I fell in love with the worst only to discover the best.
I'd pay $150 for a remake of all the story and voice acting from the 5 LOK games made into 1 with cutting edge graphics and gameplay. Blood omen made a big impact on me at 12 years old.
Unfortunately the voice actors who are still alive are all 70 plus years and I personally don't think there is anyone who could fill the void of these amazing people and like raziel in the spectral realm empty and incomplete
Cant believe this compilation exists. Everyone telling me that the story was amazing but i would NEVER play all those hours. This is JUST what i needed.
The games are all definitely worth playing but it's a bitch trying to figure out how to play them nowadays I guess pc versions or emulators maybe I miss having a working ps2
Me too. Absolutely enjoyed the refresher and the nostalgia. Ever hoping for a remaster or a web series... Or just something to tell their story front to end.
fun fact in soul reaver 1 the first human soldier you meet if you avoid him and don't agro him (that means get to close and he attacks you) later on the humans see you as a god and bow to you making some later parts easier
1:33:35 "These blades now coiled in sinister embrace have inspired terror in the hearts of creatures far more endurable than you old man." What a badass line to really make the Soul Reaver sound terrifying. Also lol when he flicked Mobius' head
The first game will always hold a special place in my heart. It was an amazing story, far ahead of the other games of its era, complete with shocking plot twists, incredible character development and an ambiguous ending.
I think Simon Templeman does a terrific job too. non the less I agree that this franchise will never be the same, without such exceptional voice cast. R.I.P Paul Lukather and Tony Jay. May thee find peace.
6:06:00 The End... not quite... There are some things that MUST happen still, and a future that was disclosed by the developers (after the game was canceled). Let's start right where the video left off. Kain's next move would be to find a way back to distant future, back to his crumbling empire, right after he and Raziel departed into the past. Kain would then spend as long as it takes hunting down and at last defeating the Elder God. Finally, the world would be rid of the great parasite that has plagued it for so long.Though that is a great victory for Kain and for Nosgoth, it would be of little comfort to the trapped damned Raziel. Because in order for all of these events to happen, the Soul Reaver with Raziel inside, must return to the past. Kain would have to go back in time, and leave the Soul Reaver somewhere for Moebius to claim it so it could be given to William the Just. That way, William would have it so that young Kain could break it, Raziel could mend it, and then it could be placed in Avernus for young Kain to acquire for the events of Blood Omen to take place. From that point on, we can only speculate. Kain would likely return to the distant future and begin to mend a severely damaged world. Raziel though, would be trapped, forever destined to carry out the events of the games in an endless loop. An ending both happy and sad, with fate being both overcome and submitted too. A perfect end to a utterly amazing story.
It would have been interesting, as if kain had gone back to that point in time to kill the elder god he would also have to find a way to reach him. As the elder god is located underwater, and Kain still cant touch water unlike Raziel
ArchipelagoMagi who said the story of kain was a happy one remember, destiny always plays out yes raziel is eternally trapped in the reaver but think about it given how important the soul reaver is to the land and fate of nosgoth so raziel has to be trapped otherwise the timeline wouldn’t make sense, everything comes full circle
I still feel like we need an explanation of how Kain lives without the Heart of Darkness. Furthermore how the Soul Reaver reveals the existence of the Elder God to Kain. Raziel fulfilled all of the Elder God's orders: He killed Kain and became the Soul Reaver which created the chain of events which would result in Kain's death. If this was just the nature of the Soul Reaver than the Elder God signed his own death sentence, but if the reveal was Raziel's final act of free will then we're left wondering why he didn't reveal it's existence to Kain sooner.
Seems to me he would also have to resurrect Vorador and set him to leading the vampire resistance in the era of BO2. A purified Kain faces the task of restoring the Circle and the Pillars and breaking the curse on the vampire race, and managing it without paradox.
I always loved the look on kains face, the hesitation before he said “cast him in”, before he looks off in the distance….wondering if it was the right choice. Even the first time watching the intro, I picked up on it, but wondered why? Then you play and discover it was Kains last effort to change fate. he truly didn’t know how it would play out, on top of his regret at the fact he had to destroy a friend/ally to do it. And the first confrontation between him and Raziel at the pillars is…sublime. The dialogue is perfection. What an amazing series. A shame it was never finished, but one of my favs of all time!!
In the 8 years since you’ve put this up, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this or had it playing the background while I was doing something else.
It's hard to believe it's been over a decade since I took on this project. It makes me happy to know so many people still appreciate this fantastic franchise.

Having first played Blood Omen, I remember when I first played Soul Reaver 2, how 2:51:33 was so satisfactory -- to know you're right in that Blood Omen moment when Vorador raids the Circle ( 21:43 ) and that Raziel is what made Malek be late to help the Circle and be damned for his failure.
+Damien Thornes I had the same reaction. It also made me despise Moebius even more. He knew what was going on and did nothing to change it. He is a sell out to the Elder God.
I know this is a late comment but did you also notice in 17:20 where Mobius stated, " it was his vanity that failed the circle". When in fact it was all him
One of the things i love about this story as a whole, is that throughout the entire story, time travel is never a simple or easy solution to any of the problems it is applied to. In fact, in 90% of the situations it occurs in, it screws things up worse than before.
That cut around 2:58:00 or so is perfect. When literally right after Raziel is done talking to Raziel, Raziel immediately goes to stab Raziel and tells Raziel "I renounce you."
@Devin Carter No he wasn't in that blade yet, that all happened in the past before William the Just got it (also why that blade didn't absorb the souls of his Sarafan brothers when he killed them). Raziel was supposed to be absorbed into the blade at that point, some years later William would take it, he'd be visited by Kain from the future with the same sword, they fight and William's sword would break. Then a few years later Raziel would visit William's tomb and repair the blade, which young Kain would find in Abernus a few years after that, he'd keep it for a millennium until he broke it trying to strike down Raziel.
I had SR1 for my psx when I was a child and it was so damn terrifying to play then. When I came to Zephon's cathedral I noped so hard that it took me good 10 years to come back and actually finish the game. For more immersion I played it on the same psx which, surprisingly enough, was still working.
This video alone and our consistent return to it over the years may be the sole driver for our recently answered hopes of a revival. Honestly and deeply thank you.
Raziel and Vorador's interaction is one of the better enlightened conversations of the series, Vorador first made out to be a murderous monster becomes a tragic survivor who is killed by nosgoths master manipulator Mobius.
@@PerfectHandProductions Yeah that is a good one! Sort of like Vorador, Janos was demonized through the series, then when Raziel meets him he turns out to be the kindest soul that Raziel meets during his journey. Slowly the plight of the vampires becomes clear and they aren't as monsterous as they were made out to be! Until Kain who was ruthless and cunning saw the traps created by Mobius, Mortanious, and the elder god. Great dialogue and storytelling, I hope they do something new with LOK universe.
Such a shame that this story will never get a true ending. Kain is such a great character, and this level of development was way ahead of its time in the gaming industry. What a hidden gem of a series.
I can't help but revisit this series and become overwhelmed with melancholy. I had the pleasure of growing up with this series and I fear this may have been the peak of video game storytelling, voice acting and cinematics. No agenda. No irrelevant inclusions or deliberate exclusions that appeal to demographics. Just a beautifully original, dark and haunting experience. I fear as a lover of storyline driven gaming I may never be able to enjoy a game as much as this series. Fluff and filler RPGs, online orientated gaming and mobile based games now in demand... I feel storyline and voice acting have now become a lesser focus. Will the generations to come look back on a classic series such as this fondly or will it be forgotten... Would a remaster do this series the justice it deserves...? "Time fades even legend... and the origin of the Soul Reaver has been lost long ago..."
Like the great stories in film and literature, Legacy of Kain will be remembered by niche group who appreciate its qualities. I agree, however, that the gaming community in general does not care for these types of games and I suspect we won't see anything like this for some time.
Its like you've never heard of cult classics. People are discovering this series to this day with the help of videos like this among other means. A good story will be recognized through the generations and can stand the test of time.
I have to seriously give the creators respect. They do not care even the slightest if a person jumps in at a random game and is utterly confused by the story. I adore that. It is one long beautifully crafted and told story that you have to enjoy from beginning to end to fully understand it. For any casual player that is a mortal sin. For me, it is absolute gold. One of the greatest stories told, with great voice acting, amazing aesthetics (save for Blood Omen 2 maybe) and pretty darn good game play. I want to know how Kain's story ends and I'm kind of glad that Dead Sun didn't happen since it deviated from this long story.
Yes. But I believe they started to care about new players with Defiance. That's why there is much repetition of the story in Defiance and why it's dumbed down in comparison to the other games. I think they choose the wrong route there, but economically it makes sense.
My god sir. this video game series is single-handedly responsible from my early development complex command of the English language. Thank you very much for uploading this. I've forgot some things of the story, but now I remember. What an amazing game, when Raziel says something like "I will be, as before, your right hand, your sword" it always makes me tremble. When you feel something for a fictional character, you know you are at presence of art.
I've been looking for this game for almost 12 years. I played it once at a barbershop when I was a kid and never saw it again. Been looking for it ever since.

I can't believe this series never got a proper ending. It's the most in-depth storyline ever written for a game and the voice acting was top notch.
+phantumgrey Honestly while not conclusive, it's still a very good ending for the franchise.
Neeeeeeeeeerds!!!!!!!
It did. Blood Omen 2 is kain dealing with the hylden lord.

My strongest memory of Soul Reaver is that Raziel's feet sounded like a pair of flip flops :)
Nearly every single cutscene begins with him opening a door and walking on stone floor while making those flip flop sounds
id say he sounds more like an elephant walking on a hardwood floor. i love how "sneaking" is literally no quieter and includes a dragging sound, yet somehow you can get literally right on top of an enemy and bear hug them without them noticing.
BenRangel so true 😂😂😂
Yes, the flip flop sound! It was always so prevalent wherever you went
I like when he moves a block and you hear the flip flops shuffle😆

Hmmm... perhaps Kain was actually telling Raziel not to test eternity? Raziel himself did everything he could to prolong his eventual destiny of becoming one with the Soul Reaver.
I just rationalised this as the Elder god eternally lying to Raziel. I wouldn't be surprised if the story continued to show that the Elder god pissed off Raziel on purpose to make him accept his destiny in defiance.

As it is, the Angels are as follows:
Raziel: "Secret of God, The Keeper of Secrets, and Angel of Mysteries." Raziel is a major Angel in Jewish mysticism.
Dumah is considered a "Thousand eye Angel of death armed with a flaming sword."
Kain is likely named after Cain, the first murderer.
Honorable mentions...
Malek or Maalik: A guardian of Hell in Islamic mythology.
Vorador: Vorador's name may come from the Spanish/Portugese word, “devorador”, which means “devourer”, “ravenous”, and “wolfish.”
Ariel: Ariel is an Angel found within Jewish mysticism and the Christian Apocrypha. The name means: "Lion of God". This name is also found within the Book of Enoch.
Many of the bosses in Blood Omen 2 are named after Shakespearean Characters.
I find the naming of these characters fascinating as they are ANCIENT names in many ways and I think it is impressive.
Excellent post! Thank you!
Bro we’ll done 👏
Well yes. Let's not forget originally Soul Reaver was meant to be the story of an Fallen Angel climbing it's way back up into Heaven to Confront God.
They realized that, this would actually fit nicely in a dark twist in the Legacy of Kain setting, with Kain being God in this case, casting his greatest Lieutenant Raziel into the Lake of the Damned.
awesome 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

It sure would have been nice to have a good conclusive ending but in a way - it fits the series to have none and to leave it up to each person's individual mind. LoK revels while DS implies with their stories.
In Nosgoth, all are antiquated, egotistical blowhards...and I wouldn't have it any other way.
The entire series is that one line Raziel aimed at Kain during soul reaver 2:
"Oh, no. Every time you turn up something monumental and terrible happens... I don't think I have the stomach for it."

+Ohem1
I think it came out at the right time.

This series needs proper respects paid in a solid remaster. If I ever won the lottery, I would personally fund it.

The dialogue in this series is straight out of Shakespeare
Well sadly most of the key voice actors are dead and gone,No one can truly replace them
I still feel like we need an explanation of how Kain lives without the Heart of Darkness.
56:25 I mean...
This kind of Gravita and Drama for whats essentially a platformer, its fucking astonishing.

+Damien Thornes Sadly I didnt play the 1st blood omen, I would have missed this if not for your comment. Just realized I love these games more now!
It was Moebius
I played Blood Omen while I was too young to remember it clearly.
That small detail however was absolutely brilliant on their end.
Don't forget Raziel is stabbing raziel WITH Raziel
So... Would that be murder, suicide, assisted suicide, or fratricide?
Yes.
No he isn't, Raziel isn't in the blade yet homie
Thank you. I'm happy to play whatever small role I can in keeping this amazing story alive.
Raziel and Vorador's interaction is one of the better enlightened conversations of the series, Vorador first made out to be a murderous monster becomes a tragic survivor who is killed by nosgoths master manipulator Mobius.
That is a great scene. I also love Raziel's first interaction with Janos.
I keep coming back to watch this thank you for uploading
Thanks for watching!
Ed Boon I agree. Completely ballsy to not cater to gamers who didn’t play the other games.
Yes. But I believe they started to care about new players with Defiance. That's why there is much repetition of the story in Defiance and why it's dumbed down in comparison to the other games. I think they choose the wrong route there, but economically it makes sense.
''What game was this? Where every player on the board claimed the same pawn.''
