Being so hot here in Virginia I was concerned about the heat. I got the OK to launch my mini4pro. But I'm older an I'm not trying to over heat my self. So any how thanks for your support it's OK to fly. Keep on flying my friend
Thanks for doing this test. I received the same results and people on the FB sites were telling me I don't know what I'm talking about as they claim recording video greatly effects battery. Now I know I was right.
Nice video series Russ. Really enjoy your explanation on everything. I suppose you've done a video on how to do waypoints on the Mini 4 Pro but that would be really useful.
Great tips, thanks, when I spotted your video, you are pointing to the RC2 controller, with the caption "don't use this" but nothing in the video about the controller???
Thanks, this was very helpful particularly how to manage the final 25% of the battery. I often don't fly far enough to be a concern and get annoyed when the drone stops to return to home. This reminded my how to manage this and have to get that in my mind on my preflight thoughts.
I learned the hard way, All 3 of my batteries malfunctioned for leaving them in my car & also always keeping them stored in the battery case, but DJI replaced it for Free!
I was flying an Air2S here in Australia on a 45 degree (Celsius = 113F) day. The drone was fine, but I was using the iPhone plugged in to the controller as a monitor, and that was overheating in minutes. The iPhone overheating caused the image to disappear from the screen, so I couldn't see anything and had to manually land. Between the heat and the flies, it was disastrous. That being said, I got some incredible footage of the painted silos I was filming. Footage was perfect.
It hit 128°F last week in Arizona, let me know how it flies in that heat. Also a dry dessert heat is not going to effect it as noticeably as a humid 123°F heat like it's hit in Florida a couple times this summer already.
Thinking I fried the main circuit board after flying in 100-104 degree heat. Not 100% sure that caused it directly. Paying attention to not placing the drone back in the carrying case before it cools off moving forward. 🤷🏻♂️
The only thing I can think of that would make it so that it kept descending while you were in cruise control was that when you press the cruise control on button you had accidentally pulled the down stick down a little in which case it would remember that as well Either that or your up and down stick is not centring properly
I just bought one of these and i live in south jersey. The "mysterious drones over military sites" nonsense has died down, not sure if the state wide temporary ban on drones is still in effect though. I've had it a few weeks but still haven't even been able to fly this thing since now we've had a few weeks of temperatures that aren't even going above freezing in new jersey. It's going up to 43 degrees in a few days and maybe that week be my maiden voyage. I've had a few cheap drones that taught me how to manually fly drones pretty well. I'm so excited. Never thought UAP's over military bases and weeks on end of sub freezing temperatures would be the reason i can't fly in new jersey 😆
It could be, that it was slowly going down because when you pressed the cruise control shortcut, you had a ‘slight’ downward pitch and it just kept doing the same downward pitch… because the pitch was so slight, it was unnoticeable until you did more revolutions… I saw UA-cam video recently about somebody using cruise control with Spotlight, which continued to work during the cruise control… make sense?
Thx for all your tips! I now am learning my mini pro 4 coming from a mavic pro. Do you have a video about learning to fly over water? I heard that's not a good idea but do wonder about that, Thx again Jack
Great tips Russ, thanks. Question for you please; If purchasing a DJI refurbished drone from DJI, can you trust that everything has been replaced? Like motors, battery/s, etc.
I fly in the Tampa Bay Area. With record breaking heat and dew points….like flying inside a dishwasher! No issues when airborne. The venting and cooling design seem to make it fine. However, I have had issues when after a longer flight I land and it overheats while transferring media. I try to take it inside near an ac vent or box fan. I am always surprised at how warm/hot to the touch the body gets at times. I’ve had the pro4 now since last August I think…I fly daily for the most part. If anything on this subject, the batteries don’t charge fully anymore. I have one that only reaches 91% and the other two are like 96% and 97%.
You ALWAYS help us out. Noob to drones here and have had the same drone for four weeks and I’m obsessed. Love your videos and the relevant info, delivered clearly 👍🏻 Ty and love from England 🇬🇧🏴🇺🇸
Thanks for your excellent content as usual. I'd add, while DJI mini Drones are in a static position.. I would advise against leaving them switched on any longer than they have to be. They get extremely hot without the airflow, Overheating any PCB can cause all sorts of damage and nasty PCB faults. I've a small portable external fan 'to try and help' keep a static MINI drone cooler when installing updates etc.
Question: Does sport mode use more power and decrease range faster than N or C modes? I made a comment on this earlier but for some reason, it got deleted?
Answer - YES! Found out the hard way - flew out in N mode, came back in S mode at full speed... it didn't make it back. Had a 1.5 km walk and alot of sweat and fear to go get it... thankfully the dog I saw running around as it was force-landing didn't find my drone and mangle / shake it to death like a feeding shark... !
GNSS: Due to the larger number of satellites, GNSS can provide more accurate location information than GPS alone. GNSS receivers typically offer accuracy within 1 meter, with some surveying products achieving millimeter accuracy.
Was once in that situation where my mini 4pro alerted me on the battery level and activated RTH...but becuase i felt i wasn't done with what i was doing, and cancelled...that almost turned out to be the worst decision I've ever made as my drone almost landed in the water (i was flying over water🤦🏽♂️)...never making that mistake ever again...if it says it's time to RTH...i let it do it's thing😁
Excellent. Really enjoying the Quick Tip series. I don’t even own Mini 4 Pro but have other DJI drones. Would you consider doing a video showing how to load drone related apps (e.g., Air Control) onto a DJI controller? Maybe that’s not even a good idea. Would appreciate your thoughts at any rate. Just a suggestion. Thanks from all you do!
I'm thinking of getting a drone, and this is a very useful piece of information! What do you think about taking off from the flat roof of a five-story building?
I'm wondering if the flight time test wasn't conducted using three different batteries. If so, perhaps the relatively small difference in flight times could be variances in effective capacity battery to battery?
Russ - thank you for the helpful information about air temperature- my question is what about humidity? I’ve been trying to avoid flying when it’s above 75%. Am I being too cautious?
Keep in mind that, even you are not using the drone camera, it is still being used. Otherwise, you would not be seeing it on your controller. The only variable will be what type of recording you are having it do, which will be using less power than actually having the camera turned on.
I would like to see a range test at the various performance settings. IOW, am i better off to fly in sport mode, normal mode, or cine mode to maximize range (at zero wind).
You said in a recent tips video that when you point your controller at the Mini 4 Pro that the radar dot will turn green. It stays blue even if the drone is right in front of you. I live in West Virginia, USA and have the latest firmware (checked yesterday before flight).
Great tips! No idea why you were losing altitude, certainly not temperature related issue since you’re getting a gps altitude read and not barometric data (which would be affected by temperature changes). Maybe a cruise control issue? Was the gps reception constant during the maneuver? Curious to see other inputs. Thank you for the video!
Thanks for a very interesting video. Once got into "critical", the drone didn't accept any controls so I climbed a pile of rubble to grab the drone. When landing, standing in a high grass area, hand catching is used this way: Go into Safety, down to Advanced settings and nock out the downward sensors to pick the drone. When the downward sensors are off the Mavic 3 pro descends slowly. Just be aware of it.
Hi gang. Accurate GPS location only requires 3 satellites for triangulation. However, A 4th satellite is included to correct for timing errors between satellites. Anything over 4 is 'gravy'. And as satellites appear and disappear from 'view' (horizon) as they orbit the earth, having a dozen or so insures dependable coordinates over time.
It's a phone app, says in title UAV Forecast. You can use it for free with very limited features. I also like Dronecast provides a little more for free.
Hey, great video. I have an insight to add and a question. Firstly, this is going back years so technology might have improved since then. But the first drone I ever bought was the first small drone dji did. On my first ever flight, I took off immediately after it said it had a home point. When I hit return to home, it turned out it had got that position wrong and actually landed on a nearby building! It was heartbreaking. Fortunately I found and paid a guy with an extendable truck ladder and I was able to get it back. Since that point I always wait for more sattelites and have never had it return anywhere other than the exact location I took off. As for the question, I'm deciding between the mini 4 pro and a really good deal on a second hand air 2s. Any opinions on the two? The last drone I owned was the original air, so I feel like the mini 4 will be a big upgrade no matter what. But I'm wondering if its lightness means it's tough to fly higher or in the mountains during wind etc. Using the drone while hiking will probably be one of the main ways I use it. Cheers!
I just got an Air 3 with the fly more combo.. The drone and RC2 consume tons of power just being turned on... So i think that recording is only a fraction of the power consumption. These days there's a dedicated chip for recording which consumes very few watts. The RC2 has 22 Wh battery and consumes it just being turned on in 3 hours. The drone also consumes all power on few hours by just sitting on the table with power on. That makes them as power hungry as a laptop that plays UA-cam (WiFi) at full brightness (10-15 watt)
I've got the dji 2, I'd like to update to another one, which drone would you recommend for making videos with the gimbal stabilizer incorporated, high quality and time flying? I just started making videos for my Facebook account. Thanks for your videos. I will be waiting for your respond.
Good stuff, but I have to disagree a little with the heat issue. There were 5 cities last week, 2 in Florida and 3 in Arizona that hit over 120°F(48.8°C), outside Phoenix it hit 128°F(53.3°). I'm not saying your drone won't operate or that you shouldn't do it in those temps, but I'd definitely pay attention to core temp readings and keep a closer eye on motor temps during and between flights, and try to have something to mechanically cool the drone also between flights.
I’m a new mini 4 owner. I’m concerned about the photo quality. I do t know if I have missed something in the settings but the photos are very grainy. Maybe given it’s a small censor it just is what it is but I was expecting pin sharp images? Were my expectations simply too high 🤔 any thoughts and suggestions are welcomed🙏
Great video and as always an excellent easy to follow and understand turorial. Maybe this topic has been covered. But if not, in respect to the Mini 4 Pro is there a suggested method to ensure you have full batteries when going out to have some fun? I find that I charge all 3 regular batteries and place them in the carry bag. After a few days the batteries will discharge to as low as 60%. Suggestions?
They discharge to remain at optimal storage levels. After depleting them, if I am not planning on flying, I charge them to back to around 70% for storage. When I am planning to fly I can top off two sets of drone batteries in a few hours. I may charge them the night before and maybe even top them off just before I leave home.
In thinking that the only difference recording or not should be writing to card which would be almost no extra power. It's doing all the processing regardless of recording.
Russ, Sir -- Thanks for the tips! You're always a help. Questions -- 1.) Can the Mini 3-Pro RC-2 controller be used with the Mini 4-Pro drone? 2.) Was the RC-2 controller for the Mini 4-Pro updated in some way over the Mini 3-Pro RC-2 controller? THANKS...
Russ, great tips as always. I’m about to buy the mp4 and just want to verify with you: If I buy the regular batteries I don’t need to concern myself with remote ID, but if I mix in the larger plus battery with them , the drone must be registered with the built in remote ID signal. Is this correct . And…. What is your opinion on just sticking with the regular intelligent batteries ( only ), considering privacy and future possible bans? Thanks
You would regret not having the longer battery life. I highly recommend getting the batteries plus and registering the drone. Remote ideas nothing to worry about. And even if a ban does happen to occur, any currentdrones will not be included..
When I have the drone sitting idle when programming or updating, I have a desktop fan blowing from the front to simulate forward motion... works great keeping it cool.
Thanks for the hint.!!!

It’s always recommended to charge them the day before you plan to fly out
They discharge to remain at optimal storage levels. After depleting them, if I am not planning on flying, I charge them to back to around 70% for storage. When I am planning to fly I can top off two sets of drone batteries in a few hours. I may charge them the night before and maybe even top them off just before I leave home.
@@riskybusiness5 thank you
@@51Drones Thank you.
In thinking that the only difference recording or not should be writing to card which would be almost no extra power. It's doing all the processing regardless of recording.
What happens if you fly in cold weather ?
Hey i lost my drone just 4 hours ago.Last 10 sec video showing some other location and GPS is showing something else. Please help to find my drone
I think flight time difference is due to wind/temperature condition which out of the test environtment control.

Random question. You from MN? Saw you in another video wearing a Vikes sweater
THANKS...
Yes. It has O4 transmission. They are not compatible.
Thanks!
Russ, great tips as always. I’m about to buy the mp4 and just want to verify with you:
If I buy the regular batteries I don’t need to concern myself with remote ID, but if I mix in the larger plus battery with them , the drone must be registered with the built in remote ID signal.
Great, thanks again
