My favourite Seekers song, it just sent me right back to my childhood, my sister and I with our gramaphone, our 45 rpm records and hairbrushes to use as microphones! Thank you for the memories!
Such a hauntingly bittersweet, sad and beautiful song .. The voice of the wonderful Judith Durham and the harmonies by the guys are just exquisite here, and the arrangement is spot on .. Just about my favourite Seekers song .. Still sends a shiver down the old spine !
Great description, Wayne! This one is definitely beautiful. I am loving getting to learn more about The Seekers music. They are a fabulous group...very talented 🤗❤️
This song reminds me of my Mum. She wore out the Seekers LP, Live at the Talk of the Town, and it was on the stereo every day when we got home from school ...!
The Seekers 25th Anniversary ( silver) concert is on UA-cam. You should watch it. They sang some really beautiful songs on that tour that that they had not sang in concert before. One of them was Time and again. They also made an album in 1997 called Future Road and all but three of the songs in that album were written by the artist in the Seekers band. They disbanded in 1968, reunited in 1993 for the Silver Anniversary tour which I think ended up lasting almost two years because it kept selling out. Then they played some charity concerts and other appearances, along with doing things on their own. In 2011 they were invited to preform with Andre’ Reiu and his Orchestra. In 2013 they celebrated 50 years of the Seekers with their Golden Jubilee concert series. In the middle of their concert series, after finishing a concert one night, Judith had to be hospitalized due to a cerebral brain bleed. After postponing the tour so that Judith could recuperate and rehabilitate. They continued the concert series and that was their final time together. Judith passed away August 5th, 2022. Just a couple of days before Olivia Newton John. Two big loses. Other than Karen Carpenter, I really can’t think of anyone besides Judith Durham that had such perfect pitch. Back then, no auto tune and the artist played their own instruments while they sang. Judith Durham could also play the piano. They have put out a final album ( at least for right now) called Carry me.
Hi Robin, thank you for the backstory. I will definitely check out their silver anniversary videos. What an amazing thing for Judith to do after being in the hospital...just shows how much she loved music and performing 🤗

Great reaction. The band member you are referring to being good looking is Keith Potger. You have to react to their song I Am Australian from their farewell concert, you won't be disappointed
This has to be my favourite Seekers song. Hey Sue just for your own interest, you must check out the 2014 Live farewell performance. "The Seekers - The Carnival is Over: Special Farewell Performance". She still sounded amazing after 50 plus years.
Judith Durham was my childhood idol and I was devastated when she passed away in 2022 😢 ‘The Carnival is Over’ was the first album I ever owned. I was 4 years old. Thank you for your lovely reaction. RIP darling Judith 😔❤️
Hi Judy, thank you for your kind words. I am so glad it brought memories back for you. I remember getting my first albums when I was about 5 and I know how those early albums stick with you for life 🤩💜
Hi Sue, saw THE SEEKERS many times including their final U.K. Tour. At the end of the show as people were giving a standing ovation and throwing flowers on the stage and giving Judith bouquets, I helped my 90 year old Mum from her seat so she could stand and applaud them, Judith saw this and came over to Mum and held her hand and blew her a kiss. We played this song at Mums funeral and it was heartbreaking but beautiful for so many different reasons.
Awwww bless Judith RIP. the seekers had a shed load of hits here and back home, ff; can't remember which one. But one of the guys couldn't be on the Album cover, as he was contracted to the A. B. C. here, and couldn't "moonlight" in the band. 😮😅
@@playitagainsue just looked it up The Seekers first LP with the (withdrawn) 1st press cover. Withdrawn because it shows Ken Ray, the original Seekers' lead singer, in place of Keith Potger. Ken Ray had decided to leave The Seekers to get married and was replaced by Judith Durham. At the time the album was released, Keith Potger was still employed by the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) and could not be involved in any other commercial enterprise.
I can remember this being on the radio all the time (UK) listening with my mum...I was 3 apparently ! The band were huge here and were sadly missed. Then we got The New Seekers a bit later.
There is a UA-cam video of The Seekers of their farewell concert in England in 1968 after which , Judith left the band. It goes for 49 minutes, so wouldn't expect a reaction video, but for your own enjoyment it is a must to watch.
For me there's Judith Durham, Karen Carpenter, Janis Joplin and Maggie Bell on the Mt Rushmore of female singers, which is leaving off some outstanding talent of course. The harmonies and musical arrangement within The Seekers are quality too. Beautiful song.
Sue hard to believe you're never heard the Seekers before, huge group over 60 years,Record concert in Australia of 200,000 people.Top three female singers from 60s#1 Judith Durham(Seekers)2 Dusty Springfield solo, Grace Slick Jetterson airoplane-Dusty's brother wrote all the big hits for the Seekers.
Hey Dion, I did know Georgy Girl but I didn't know who sang it. I have listened to a couple of their songs now and am super excited to hear many more of their songs. They are fabulous 🤩💜
When you did your other Seekers reaction I mentioned this was a favourite of my friend from Stratford because she grew up in the circus. Her father had Conklin Shows carnival concessions! Judith was one of few singers with a beautiful natural vibrato and that quality in a voice always makes it sound haunting to me (like Robin Gibb and Aaron Neville). Her version of "Plaisir d'amour" is amazing. Their harmonies superb. Another great song is "Morningtown Ride". They also do a version of "Waltzing Matilda" which I always thought should have been Australia's national anthem since it's based on a highwayman (swagman) stealing a sheep. They also do a stirring rendition of "I am Australian". Their most famous songs ware likely "Georgy Girl" which I'm sure you are familiar with and "World of our own". Treasured in their homeland.
Hey Linda, I am so glad you enjoyed this and brought you great memories of your friend. I totally remember the Conklin carnivals....so much fun. I know Georgy girl but none of the others you mentioned. I look forward to doing so many more of The Seekers stuff. I agree, Judith has one of the best voices ever!...so much talent 🤩❤️
Hi Sue, I must have missed your earlier review of a Seekers song. As you say, the late Judith Durham ha a fantastic voice. They travelled to the UK from Australia in the 1960s & hit it big over here.If you want to hear another Tom Springfield song that he gave to someone else, give Just Loving You by Anita Harris a listen. Yes I do have the 7 inch single of that!

IN THE UK WE HAD A GROUP, AFTER THEM CALLED, THE NEW SEEKERS. THE ONLY SONG I CAN STILL REMEMBER IS ( I'D LIKE TO TEACH THE WORLD TO SING) WHICH WAS THE COKE ADVERT. NOT SURE WHICH CAME FIRST.
Tom Springfield wrote this for the Seekers. He based the melody on the Russian folk song Stenka Razin (or Stenka Rasin). Stenka Razin was a Cossack rebel leader who led a major Cossack and peasant rebellion on Russia’s south-eastern frontier in 1670-71.
This was the 6th best selling single of the 60's here in the UK and I still love it. Other suggestions I'd make would be World Of Our Own, Rattler(which has Bruce on lead vocal), Danny Boy, ( either as the Seekers or Judith solo), Love Is Kind, Love Is Wine, Olive Tree (Judith solo),but anything really.
Hey Richard, very interesting. I had no idea it was the 6th best selling single of the 60s on the UK. That is incredible! When you think about how many great bands and songs there were in the 60s, that is a truly amazing accomplishment! Thanks for that Richard 🤩
Part two - The Russian folk song is about a pirate on the Volga River. In Russian, the Volga is culturally equivalent to the Mississippi in the US. The Mother River essentially. The song portrays the pirate whose actual name is Steven Razin - in Russian vernacular his first name is pronounced Stenka - sort of a nickname to Steven. In the song the pirate ship is on the Volga and on board Stenka is portrayed as just having spent the night with a Persian princess in his cabin. When he comes out onboard feeling giddy, his pirate sailors remark that he has gotten "soft". Well, he hears this and to show his manliness he takes the princess and flings her into the Mother Volga and then proceeds to lament her soul as she drowns in the river - all to preserve his masculinity with his pirate sailors. I will next attach a video of the classic Russian Red Army Chorus singing the song the way it was intended. THEN!!! I will have a treat for you.
