    Another pro tip is connections: I'm accepted at Wake because my uncle works in the medical school, does research for them, and is their best trauma surgeon. However, this only worked for me because I made a 3.6 sGPA and a 3.71 overall with 517 MCAT. I had little research but a lot of extracurriculars and service hours.

I figured that me being in the clinic and also advising Freshmen about pre-health careers would look better on my resume? I am hoping that I can somehow fit research in before I have to take the MCAT next summer.

    Thank you so much for this video! This actually made me feel a bit better about the admissions process. I'm in my last year of undergrad but don't have the advantage of taking as much courses to support my science gpa like BIO majors since I'm a Kinesiology major. However, I've conducted 3 research projects in the physiological/biomechanical effects of surfing with one of them bringing me abroad to Costa Rica. There's not alot of research done in the sport,so publication is somewhat easy. Typical Southern Californian I guess.I love surfing & sometimes having surfing professors & doing data collection at the beach beats being in the traditional lab:) haha

    Hey Shaman,
    I appreciate your videos and perspective so far! I'm still an undergrad, and currently I am lacking in clinical volunteer hours and research hours/publications. This semester I've secured a few solid clinical volunteer positions (2) for the semester. I plan on keeping these for the duration of the semester and at least for 6 months total. In your opinion/experience and through your conversations with admissions committee members, is research experience valued over clinical volunteering hours at say a hospital?
    I eventually do plan on getting into a good lab (if I'm fortunate enough), however advisors I have spoken to have seemed to indicate that clinical experience is more important than research if you had to pick one to really excel at.
    Also, to your point on the UR service experience. Are you referring to medical schools' tendency to be more lenient to URM candidates? I've always assumed med schools will associate your dedication to the UR population simply because you are part of that conglomerate as a result of your upbringing.
    Again, good job so far on your videos man! You have a practical approach to everything. Hopefully I'll be able to join you on the path through med school (though by the time I hope to get in, you'll probably be about done)!

    Hi Shaman, thank you for another detailed video! As far as my pre-med life goes, I know that I am performing all of the required steps in order to get into medical school, however one important piece is missing, and that is clinical experience. I am going into my second year so I am not in too great a rush. My worry is, however, that if I volunteer at my local hospital that I am not going to attain any legitimate experience, which will only set me back as a waste of time (this is coming from people who have done this volunteer work). To start myself off, I have joined an organization that drives down to Mexico every month, where I will be getting hands on clinical experience with the underserved population. I believe that this is a good start, but should I look to do anything further as far as clinical experience goes?

    I am a student who did 3 years in community college and now transferring to UC Davis with a biology major. I have this same question, I abhor the idea of any type of science research (which probably makes me sound like I shouldn't be in this field), but I'm starting in on some Gender Studies research which might possibly lead to a publication.

    • @MedBros
      @MedBros  7 років тому +61

      That is a great question! The answer is pretty detailed so I might make a video specifically about research in the future if people are interested. In general, I would say it matters because certain types of research are more easier to get publications and generally take up less time, etc. than others. Overall though, I would recommend to just do what you like because doing research that you hate is one of the worst things in the world!

    • @bilalrana9610
      @bilalrana9610 7 років тому +1

      From the med school students I have talked to, it really does not matter so long as you gain experience. For example, you are much better off in a Gender Studies lab that results in a publication because that shows devotion and dedication, rather than a clinical research lab where you spent time mixing chemicals and cleaning beakers. Personally, I am in a psycholinguistics research lab because that suits my interest coming from a bilingual family, and I have already presented at a research symposium while attaining proper research experience in the form of experiment design and subject testing. I did not even expect to be allowed to perform the latter, but I am glad I did as I found the interaction with subjects to be quite amusing!

    • @sigontw
      @sigontw 7 років тому +4

      I am a little surprised by some of the responses here. I have been doing behavioral-clinical/public health research over a decade and publishing extensively with MDs (as a PhD). I would say, no research is easy to publish. If you just want to list your name on any publication in some low-tier journals, oh well, just grab any quick opportunity and you may have your name at 5th or 6th place. But if you want to have some good publications in those more well-established journals as the 1st and 2nd author, it often takes years to get one published. I do a lot of secondary data analyses, and it still take me months to get the models right and good enough for publishing. FYI: I just got one accepted in one of the leading journals in my field, and it took me 2 years to finalize my model, and another 1 year to get it accepted. Now I need to wait for a few more months to get it printed. Last night I checked the date of my original statistical code file, it was exactly 3 years ago.
      I am going to apply to med schools next cycle. I have talked to several MDs (mostly my collaborators or their colleagues who served on the admission committees) and they all told me my research topic is totally fine with them. Don't be surprised that MDs do a lot of different research too! (most of my publications have a least 1 MD on the author list) Also, if you read medical journals, you can also find a wide variety of research topics are published in those journals. Just choose one field that interests you the most, and devote your time, efforts, and passions. =)

    • @bilalrana9610
      @bilalrana9610 7 років тому +3

      That is another thing I forgot to mention. In one of my biochem introduction lectures, the professor made it pretty clear that publishing research is rare, and is not even expected by most med schools. It almost feels like a bit of luck factors into it :/

      Rudolf Gyorkei Bro a 3.0 cannot possibly get anybody into an ivy league med school or even a md med school. Tbh a 3.6 is bad unless somebody excels in other areas like mcat score, extracurriculars, etc.. Someone with a 3.0 has a better chance going to an overseas medical school. There is no way in hell a US medical school will accept that.

      Just do whatever you are more passionate about! Med schools love it when you keep at something so if volunteering at the hospital is an enriching experience where you learn a lot then stick with it (will make great topics for interviews as well). But if its too repetitive and you want to try something different or want to go to a med school or program in a med school that emphasizes underserved work, then definitely do the latter! Either option is great to be honest!

    I don't know what to do I have asked every Biology teacher at my University if I could have an opportunity to shadow and they all said they are filled up...I don't know what to do at this point. I have a 3.9 GPA, I volunteer, shadow, and work 20-30 hours a week. I know I can't get in without research so I'm stuck at this point

      Basically I need advice, is there anywhere I could possible research besides my school? I have been persistent and like you said I can tell they don't care for students, but I can't let that stop me

      Hi Emily! I completely understand your situation because research can sometimes be hard to find! Some options might be to see if your school has a program or system to match students up with researchers and apply to that, email nearby labs or schools around you to see if they have openings, or try to get research in other fields because any research is solid! Most importantly though, don't worry and take time to find research. You might not get research one semester at your school but next semester you might email/talk to professors and find out that you can choose between multiple positions! I will make a video specifically on research and how to ask for/get research in the future so stay tuned! Good luck with everything!

      Emily J try applying to a summer research experience program. Several schools offer them and they include a stipend and free housing. All you need is a letter of rec from 2 professors. Also have you tried asking for research outside your biology program? How about neuroscience, chemistry, or statistics? Even if it’s not your ultimate interest, you only need that first letter of rec from one prof to open doors to more popular or competitive labs. It worked for me!

    Hi Shaman,
    Okay so I have a HUGE dilemna. I am currently a pre-nursing student and was planning on applying to nursing school this November. I've recently had a talk with my Microbio professor about nursing vs doctor and he really got me rethinking my future. Now I'm thinking, I'm 19, where I was going to take 8 yrs to become a nurse practitioner, I can do a few more years and become a doctor. I am currently a student at CSUEB and SUPER CONFUSED about what to do. I need advice! I don't really know any premed students personally and I have SO MANY questions. You are the closest med student friend I've got!(and Kaurbeauty). I need help!

    • @simphotos500
      @simphotos500 6 років тому +1

      KaurTurbanator I would really recommend you to put aside the timing to complete school just once and think about what you want to be working as the rest of your life. Nursing and medicine may seem similar at first glance but they are very very different. You should consider what kind of a profession you want to enter: The type of patient experiences, the closeness to the individual in care, the level autonomy in decision making- types of decisions you want to be able to make and tons more that differentiates RNs (and even NPs)from MDs. I would really ask you to do your research in what the professional experience is like for both of them because nursing and medicine operate on very different philosophies of patient care

    Hey Shaman, great video! Thank you. I have a question on how much shadowing experience should a pre-med get? Also, if you are an EMT or CNA etc, do you still need have 100's shadowing hours? I would think less, since your already familiar with the hospital.
    In addition, I realized from watching your video, how much time & research, it takes to get to know 15+ schools.

      How old is too old for the LOR. I mean if someone gets a letter of rec from their freshman yr but applies junior or senior, would that lor be considered too late?

    • @Chelssums
      @Chelssums 6 років тому +2

      no... no letter of rec is too old unless it's HS... i think what he means is ask for a letter of rec immediately and save it until you apply. freshman is fine but make sure you have letters of rec from upper level science courses.

    How do you publish papers as an undergrad? Do you have to conduct your own experiment?

    • @zohal2947
      @zohal2947 7 років тому +1

      Normally undergraduates try to find positions working in professors research lab in school as like an apprenticeship. If the student contributes enough to the project, then the professor will list the student as an author for the paper. There are other means to get publications as well, which could be conducting one's own research. I intern at a national laboratory so I got my publication that way (and I get paid, which I wouldn't if I worked at my school :) )

    You seem so relaxed about studying, taking tests and having conversations and interviews with people you haven't met before. For a lot of people that's scary stuff! Not everyone who is as smart as you actually gets the score they deserve because they get stressed out about studying and even more stressed out on the day of the test! But there's a lot of research now into methods and practices to stop stress from getting to you! You can learn to get out of the panic zone and into the learning zone! www.jlsglobal.ca
