I loved the story towards the end of the video about your experiences that evening with the chef, his mother and wife.
And I agree, that at times the price becomes rather irrelevant, when the experience that you've enjoyed is priceless. Because, how often do you get to experience amazing food and exceptional hospitality like that?

What an awesome experience with the chef! Your story about it was my favorite part of the video, even though you didn't film it... such a good call to not film it, and it's refreshing that you as a content creator have the judgment to not stick a camera in someone's face all the time as so many others would. Looking forward to the next Kobe video!

I'm so happy my meagre Patreon contribution helped toward that amazing meal experience, and I'm glad you didn't film. I once had a similar experience at a phenomenal restaurant in Austria, ending up drinking with the chef/owner and his sister after. I think I took 5 blurry photos, but it's probably my fondest meal memory ever.

Your experience with Nori-san and his mother is probably one of those stories that will stay with you for the rest of your life. What a great place to tumble on! You are quite right to not record it and just be in the moment, and your descriptions were vivid enough for fertile imaginations to animate what went on. The history of the debarkation of Japanese emigrants was significant, too, as well as the mention of the introduction of surnames in the Meiji period. Thanks for an AMAZING video, Eric!

I don’t mind at all that you didn’t film the whole thing - glad you were able to fully enjoy the experience instead! And tbh your re-telling of it was so much more evocative than filming it would have been. I think it was totally worth you spending the money this time round - you had an amazing experience you will always remember!

That money you spent on that dinner sounds like it was totally worth it. I remember I felt like I was jumped once when I got a bill at a restaurant in the SF Bay Area once that ended up being $175 each for me and my date. I realized when they had like course after course coming out that I was going to pay an arm end a leg for it. The food was like an out of body experience for me though and I was happy to have paid $350 not counting wine and tip.

I actually had this restaurant bookmarked back a few years ago for a day visit to Kobe while on a trip to Japan, but we didn’t get the opportunity to dine there. Every now and then, you get an experience that is essentially one you'll remember for a long time. As a consequence, 250 bucks will be forgotten very quickly. But the value of the experience will persist in your minds for a long ass time. So really, 250 is no money - people spend lots more on a lot less.

But then he said his friend owned a sushi restaurant and we went there. Our group was 7 people and there were 2 other office ladies there but the guy was really fun and friendly. I made a video at this place. This place was also quite expensive, ¥10,000 per person.

which do you prefer, Kobe or Yokohama?
The topography of Kobe is quite different from that of yokohama.
Kobe is long from east to west, but very short from south to north.
It takes about twenty minutes on foot to go from the port of Kobe to the foot of Mt.Rokko(height;about 2300 ft.)
Next time you come to Kobe, enjoy the maritime scenic beauty of maiko (western part of kobe). It takes about 20 minutes by train from the central discrict
of kobe to maiko. Maiko has a sumptuous hotel (Maiko Villa Kobe)

I think our most expensive meal was at a place called Gaby's in Puerto Vallarta (our home away from home). It hit the $150 mark but we did order too much food which was delicious by the way. The highlight for me, though, was the 'coffee' I had at the end of the meal. First time I've ever felt numb after an after dinner coffee. you know about the situation with the various houses, i m not sure but there are similar situations here in italy too, a lot of places have a mix of well kept houses with abbandoned ones because of who owns the proprerty, meaning maybe the owner of house A sold it to someone or built the museum in it and is well kept, instead the owner of house B still wants to keep the proprerty but doesn't want to spend for it's upkeep and as a result the house gets abbandoned. It's a sad situation and sadly the government can't do anything about it until the house becomes a public danger to people, then at that point they can fine the owner and force him to sell the house or to spend some money to keep the house in a better state. i immagine that japan could have similar laws.

Wow, that's a lot to pay for a meal but if the experience was a great one that you'll remember it sounds like it was worth it. The amount you spent on that one meal though is more than I spend on food in 6 months (I just checked my accounts to see & I spent under £400 for the year so about $500 USD). I need to treat myself more :D

Yes you can have donuts without a hole with a filling or just with sugar. You can get plain still. Guess people like choice 🤷‍♀️ but yes agree the choice is getting overwhelming. There is such a thing as too much choice 😂 Also british donuts are totally different texture to American style. What texture is Japanese? British is a heavily dough consistency, American far lighter and cakey

These specific donuts were closer to what you describe as American, but I have had both styles in America and Japan, I wasn't aware there was a geographical difference haha. -E
