Für mich ist das eine der ganz großen Sinfonien! Sie berührt mich im tiefsten Innern.
WDR Sinfonieorchester is one of the best orchestra in the world, so it seems, and Widmann, a great conductor beyond any doubt.
I wonder why the record industry does not promote them more.
For far too long I ignored the music of Mendelssohn considering him a somewhat lightweight composer. How wrong I was. Though any early work this symphony contains many great moments. Similarly my discovery of “Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage” has made me realise that he wrote one of the finest overtures of the 19th c.

Rotary trumpet
As mentioned, rotary valve trumpets are more popular in Europe than in the States, where piston valves are more common.
Parts of this just seemed very rushed. Not my favorite reading of this glorious piece of music.
