Stunning. I'm not as educated to the nuances as the rest of the commentators, but this spoke to me on so many levels. Restores my faith in mankind in a time when our soul is questionable.
For me this Symphony Scottish, is one of most impressive of Mendelssohn melodies This outstanding music support its composition maybe in a voyage of the author to Scotland, and perhaps represents the impression of Mendelssohn about the landscape and history of that country. The orchestra is excellent and the sound is superb.
Please, oh people who criticise this performance - music needs individuality, and not just the same old pre-conceived ideas. Yes, it is individual, and has quite a few surprising moments, but it gets to the heart of what is a normally under-rated symphony . Whether or not you agree with every single touch, it is a fabulous performance! Bravo to Rumon Gamba for his musical vision, and full marks to the response and fine playing from this orchestra. After listening to this, "conventional" performances miss out on the soul we are treated to here. Somehow, I think Mendelssohn would be rather pleased!
This performance, as most of their Classical/Romantic performances is truly remarkable. They always capture the heartfelt eccesence of the music. I would stand for 3 X a bravo for this ....and their Schumann renditions!

Mendelssohn is the true progeny of Mozart and has the same overall energy and attention to detail, a master of orchestration but without the broad panoramic themes of those who came after him. I am personally drawn to his incredibly intricate piano compositions, and I find his chamber works to be more remarkable than his symphonies. Still, this performance is exquisite and immortalizes the composer appropriately.

Que belíssima e profunda melodia tem esse adágio inicial desta sinfonia! Compor sinfonia depois de Beethoven era realmente um desafio para qualquer compositor, ainda mais porque grande parte das lendárias sinfonias de Beethoven foram compostas quando ele estava parcialmente surdo e totalmente surdo. Mas Mendelssohn teve o seu espaço. E tanto a Sinfonia Escocesa quanto a Sinfonia Italiana dão testemunho do seu gênio criador. Mendelssohn desenhava com as notas, em cada compasso, os detalhes da paisagem que ele gostaria de passar para o ouvinte. É digno de nota que, na prática, Mendelsshon era um exímio desenhista, fato desconhecido para muitos dos apreciadores de suas obras.

What an excellent performance! I was recently horribly disappointed by an "historically informed" performance. This one brings energy and excitement and all the power that Mendelssohn must have intended. Is it too fanciful to think that this orchestra has witnessed the winter storms of the Bay Biscay?

Sergio, se asombraría de ver la ingente cantidad de excelentes interpretaciones que pueden encontrarse en UA-cam con escaso número de visitas pero la sociedad actual es lamentablemente así. Soy un enamorado de la Sinfónica de Galicia y lo que realmente más me indigna es ver asientos vacíos en el patio de butacas. ¡Lo que yo daría por estar en muchos de esos conciertos! Los coruñeses deberían empezar por hacer honor a la magnífica orquesta de la que disponen, ¡Vayan a escucharla! Vale la pena. Algo a destacar también del vídeo es precisamente la realización, la imagen y el sonido que suelen ser excelentes , como en este caso.

As a teen in the 1950s, I listened to Leonard Bernstein’s explanation and analysis of this symphony, and loved everything about it including the performance on his LP. THIS performance, however, is the most exciting and (for me) perfect rendering I’ve ever heard. Thank you, over and over again. Truly a treasure.
Very grandiloquent symphony that satisfies the taste of those who prefer the external form to the musical substance that lacks an authentic inspiration the wording "Andante con Moto" is very unusual for a movement that is full of energy! The orchestra is of great value and is conducted very well.
Important to know that this symphony was written in praise of the British Queen Victoria in the last years of her life. She and Mendelssohn were friends -Queen Victoria was of course of German descent, and spoke fluent German with this great composer. Both he and Schubert were the great losses to Classical music, i.e. both unfortunately died very young.
Queen Victoria far outlived Mendelssohn! Mendelssohn delighted the then young Queen by asking to visit the nursery to meet her young children. He died in 1847, while Victoria lived to the dawn of the 20th century.

This is one of the best recordings of the Scottish symphony I’ve heard. You need a very strong string section to make this piece and they did it.

The theme from the second movement was used as music for the BBC tv production of David Copperfield in the mid 1950s. I remember it as a little boy, and have always loved it!

Sergio, se asombraría de ver la ingente cantidad de excelentes interpretaciones que pueden encontrarse en UA-cam con escaso número de visitas pero la sociedad actual es lamentablemente así. Soy un enamorado de la Sinfónica de Galicia y lo que realmente más me indigna es ver asientos vacíos en el patio de butacas. ¡Lo que yo daría por estar en muchos de esos conciertos! Los coruñeses deberían empezar por hacer honor a la magnífica orquesta de la que disponen, ¡Vayan a escucharla! Vale la pena.
Algo a destacar también del vídeo es precisamente la realización, la imagen y el sonido que suelen ser excelentes , como en este caso.

As a teen in the 1950s, I listened to Leonard Bernstein’s explanation and analysis of this symphony, and loved everything about it including the performance on his LP. THIS performance, however, is the most exciting and (for me) perfect rendering I’ve ever heard. Thank you, over and over again. Truly a treasure.

the wording "Andante con Moto" is very unusual for a movement that is full of energy! The orchestra is of great value and is conducted very well.

Important to know that this symphony was written in praise of the British Queen Victoria in the last years of her life. She and Mendelssohn were friends -Queen Victoria was of course of German descent, and spoke fluent German with this great composer. Both he and Schubert were the great losses to Classical music, i.e. both unfortunately died very young.
Queen Victoria far outlived Mendelssohn! Mendelssohn delighted the then young Queen by asking to visit the nursery to meet her young children. He died in 1847, while Victoria lived to the dawn of the 20th century.
