Alex brings such a personal, honest emotion to this song - being so personal to him directly and being such an emotive guitarist. Amazing performance, and so hard to replicate the feeling of being there.
Among his influences were Jeff Beck, who would always make it on a short list when Alex was asked this question. You can really see the influence in how emotive and nuanced his solos are, especially in this song.
This song is about a nightmare that Alex Lifeson experienced especially when they were on the road touring. They make such complex playing look so easy! The carnival music at the beginning is not the original opening. If you listen to the studio version Alex is shredding on a classical guitar at the beginning and on the official music video he is shredding on an electric guitar . They have fun with this song as well in Rio. Cheers 🇨🇦
As a teenager I used to always practice Rush songs and found them very consuming. What I mean by that is it was very satisfying. Playing through Rush songs and playing them right was a big confidence builder. A lot of musicians try to find short cuts to learning more music and how to play better but nothing beats flat out experience playing everything you hear or listen to. Country music, jazz, pop, percussion, big bands, rudiments, orchestras (whatever) and of course rock. The more variety you learn and perfect increases simply your arsenal. At least as a drummer that works well. Muscle/memory/reaction. Maybe what I like most about their music are their time changes. In school band directors used to emphasize time changes and while many had major difficulties changing time signatures I always looked forward to doing them seamlessly. As a drummer it's a great asset and in Rush music something to really admire.
This and Working Man were the encore on this tour after a 2 1/2 hr show and the band members are all at or approaching 60 yrs old. The Dryers on stage are there to help, offset the stacks of Amps on Alex’s side of the stage. Geddy doesn’t use amps so the stage always looked unbalanced. They have also used food automats and chicken rotisserie racks are various times. The dryers had concert tee shirts that the band would throw out to fans prior to the encore.
When they were trying to record the studio version of this they wanted to do it in one take but after 13 days, longer than the entire Fly By Night Album, they finally gave up and recorded it in three parts. By the the time they did this live version they could play it in their sleep. 😊
I love live videos like this that really showcase Geddy’s amazing abilities…. Playing with hands and feet at the same time…. The man is the most talented musician I have seen live.
The illumination in the coverage looks very good. you may find that raising the light a bit higher will be a more complimentary shadow on your faces. It tends to have lighting qualities that painters back in the day would look for as in the shadow on your nose would extend downwards towards your lip etc. It has the effect of making faces a little. More. Defined and less round looking, but that's really just a personal choice and like I said, the lightning already looks very, very good, just my 2 cents.
Saw these guys play 13 times and they were always on top of their game. A couple years Geddy’s voice was not that strong but he took care of it and came back almost as good! Hell, they surpassed many inferior bands who were half their age! From 2 and 1/2 hr to 3 hour shows!!!
HOOOOLY SH*T!!!!! I I didn't think that much of it the first time I heard it on the album. Live adds so much. Cool down with this just for sh*ts and grins. (ua-cam.com/video/K9AZZDeaF0w/v-deo.html ).. aA bit from Devo at Chef's aid in Southpark.
♥ Maybe check out NEIL PEART Buddy Rich HONOR?????!!!!!!!!! :) Surprises awaits!! :) ♥AND, or... Victor Wooten bass music????????? :) LOVE TOP FUEL ALWAYS!!! “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13

Amazing to know ty!
I have one of those T-shirts.
It was called the Time Machine tour, 2011. Lots of great performances in that show. This is the first of 2 encores, with Working Man closing the show.

This is probably the influence for Band Maid starting a big concert with an Istrumental. Check it out at Lallapalooza in Chicago this year.
Chech out Live in rio also, wery good.
🤩 Light looks good! 🥰🐰
Music such as this may be categorised as hypnotic.

My brother in law paid our way to see this concert. I bought the shirts and mags. 😊😮😮😊 1st half was " Moving Pictures"!! Whole album.😊😊😊😮
the intro on the studio album is a flashy, fast, Spanish accoustic style which is amazing (Alex studied classical guitar in his teens)
🐐 🐐 🐐 !!!
Gut gemacht. That was a short version.
🏆🏆🏆🏆!
❤🇨🇦
The time machine tour was amazing. Can't wait for your reaction to Working Man live in Cleveland, from this tour.
