Lectric XP Ebike Collapsible Basket/Crate Rear Rack Installation DIY

- I needed to be able to securely (and safely) haul my large 25-pound cooler to work on the back of my Lectric XP. I didn't feel strapping the cooler to the rear rack was a good way to go due to the weight and height of the cooler. So I decided to get a collapsible crate to attach to my Lectric's rack that I can not only remove easily, but also feel confident that anything I decide to put in it would be safe and secure.
My solution worked beautifully and fulfilled all the criteria I had on my wish list:
1. It could easily hold my 12 Gallon Cooler
2. Removable
3. Strong
4. Solid Mounting
5. Lightweight (crate is only 3.5 pounds)
6. Cost effective (Spent less than $20 total)
7. Lectric XP still foldable with Crate installed

I used the same crate for my 2.0. It’s been on my by bike for a long time now. I put a piece of plywood in the be bottom, front and back co it no be longer collapses. I use it for my 25lb dog most everyday. I put a 2” false bottom in it. Best feature ever!! It holds all my tools, locks, alarms, spare tools etc. completely out of sight and always with the bike. I used the rack mount bolts. This puts the box up against the lug seat and was annoying hitting me in the back. Yesterday I cut about 8”x8” out of be the be box where it was hitting me. Sooo perfect now

I am also looking to do something like this i saw a basket that cost $100 and once i saw how CRAZY the "cycling" up charge was on these things i automaticly started looking at DIY ideas

I totally agree. I often have to run to the post office, grocery store, or other errands that require me to carry things that need careful handling. The crate with a few towels help me safely transport things around. Thanks for the comment!
Actually, I would have used 3 sets of slats. 1 set the inside length of the rack replacing the pvc pipe. The 2nd set the full length of the crate for support over the rack but under the crate. The 3rd set is the interior length of the crate. Laminating the support to the full length should give it a support base to stay put. Additionally, I would use hose clamps instead of velcro to ensure it could not come off accidentally. You would also have to get right under it to see how it's connected, making it almost invisible. Another change I would likely make is using thinner aluminum stock instead of wood so it would close properly when not in use. Obviously, aluminum being stronger than wood it should be much thinner.
Nice idea! To save some time I would use contact cement to glue the wood to the bottom of the crate.
Great job! that is pretty incredible. You should consider finding a manufacturer to match your prototype and sell it (maybe get a patent application first though)
That would be cool! Mmmmmm.... you really got me thinking. Thanks for the idea! I've tried to patent a really awesome bungee cord that is always be able clip to be secure down (which I'll show in future videos) but ran out of funds. It's too late to patent that, but I'll be looking for a manufacturer in the near future to have them made.

A bit longer than necessary, but good info! I got one of these crates from Costco.
I would just attach the cooler with bungee cords to the rack and forget about that huge box. Remember the more weight you put on the bike, it will deplete the battery faster and your speed will be slower.
I totally wish I could do that. Someday I will cut down on the amount of food I take for lunch to really lighten the load. My cooler is too unstable and heavy for bungee cords to hold it securely on my 14 mile trek to work. You're totally right about the weight and how much performance I will be sacrificing. Thankfully, I should be getting my Bolton BlackBird before the end of the month and that 750watt motor should be easily be able to maintain a decent speed. Thanks for commenting!
I think i would have put some heavy duty stick on velcro inside crate to stick strap with ends of strap going towards middle of box bottom. Smart cookie though figuring out what you did.

I agree. I plan to throw a small backpack in the crate in the small space I have for my emergency breakdown kit so I can just grab it and take it with me when I have to lock my bike up. I have a cable lock that can feed through the seat and crate handle that I can quickly lock up to (hopefully) deter anyone from wanting to hassle with stealing the crate and my seat+post. Use one inch straps with buckles then you have infinite adjustable without any old Velcro.
nice job. i installed the same crate on my e-bike (Aventon Pace 500) but I oriented mine the other direction because it allowed me to move it away from the seat and still centered solid on the rack under weight. Your setup looks like the crate is close enough to the seat that it would rub your rear. any issues with that?
You’re right. It does touch my rear, but being a short guy at 5’5”, I have room to scoot forward and still ride comfortably as my arm reach on the XP 1.0 was a tad far if I sat back. I kind of just got used to it.

Do you have any other suggestions for a detachable rear basket or crate? I am looking for something to throw a backpack in that's not permanent.

I am thinking you might want to try the velcro straps I used on the crate install. You may be able to find a secure place to strap your cane or walking stick on the bike somewhere?

Here is another way to attach an Instacrate to a rear rack. You will need a 1/4" poplar "hobby" board at least the length of the crate, and another 1x3-inch board of the same length. You will also need 6 D-rings with attachment brackets, 1" washer head sharp-pointed screws and 6 Velcro or similar straps with buckles. Cut both pieces of wood to the length of your rack or the length of the inside bottom of your crate, whichever is shorter, as needed. Mark the middle of the bottom of the crate on both the inside and outside. You can use blue tape for this on the outside, to make it easier, since the crate is not flat. Place the 1x3 on a flat surface you don't mind drilling into, place the crate on top of so the middle of the board is aligned to the tape on the bottom of the crate, and the thin board is aligned in the middle of the inside of the crate. Have somebody help you hold down everything, so it does not shift. Drive three or four screws from the inside of the crate through the middle of the thin strip into the 1x3. Next, attach three D-rings with your screws to the sides of the 1x3, equally space along the length of the board. Place your crate on your rack, and use the straps you bought to fasten the D-rings to the side rails of your rack.
This crate is great for hauling stuff on your bike, be it an eBike or regular bike. You can collapse it when not in use and use a bungee cord to keep it folded and stop the rattling.

I am thinking about doing the same thing to carry our 22 Lb dog. Some have used a Milk crate, but the larger size would give her more room. What do you think?
I too have a 20 pound dog and she can easily fit and have room to be comfortable and have some padding on the bottom as well. It would also be sturdy enough as well.

I’m trying to take my rack off, but this electric wire is the last thing that needs to come off but I don’t wanna cut it, do you know how can I solve this without damaging anything, it’s connected to the red light on the back of the XP?!
Sorry, I don’t know the answer to your question. You definitely want to reach out to Lectric’s customer service about that. I am thinking they may have a good solution to avoid cutting the wire.
Did you consider using cargo net to hold your lunch box to the rack without a crate?
I actually have a cargo net that I tested, but my lunch box is too heavy and tall to safely make the 28 mile round trip to and from work. Also, I found that the extra space in the crate is perfect for me to carry extra tools and clothing etc.
Thank goodness for the motor, I carry so much stuff I look like I am going camping.😋
14 mile commute on a lectric xp? i dont suppose you can do this on one charge and back.
I might be able to do it if I used every method to ride as efficiently as possible, and if the first part of the ride was uphill.
Unfortunately, since my commute is slightly downhill to work the battery drain all uphill going when already a little depleted would kill it fast and I think I’d probably be walking the last couple miles home.
@@EbikeProducts theres always another battery option since you got the cargo box now. I was going to get a lectric as well, but after lots of reading and videos, I am deciding on a Fiido L3, true 70+ miles to a charge on throttle only. 1-2 chargers a week , there are pros and cons, but I feel its a better choice and still has a mini rack in the back build into the frame.
@@redw0lf848Fiido makes great e-bikes. I need higher speed and softer fat tires to make my commutes comfortable. Some of the Southern California streets I need to ride on can be dangerous if the bike is too small and too slow. 70+ miles is definitely a huge benefit!
@@EbikeProducts I understand about the tire size, however it is unlockable to 20m/h speed from the default 15 m/h, I find that would be sufficient speed. And the seat is designed with extra plush for comfort since its range is its selling point. at 350w motor, its got pickup. We will see, maybe ill make a video.
What is your thoughts on the lectric Brand bike lock
I have a Jenson Warren all train and I have a back rack and a seat with sprigs. This bike came with absolutely no suspension. The front forks look like the are suspension forks but they are just for looks is it possible to swap out the front forks and put on a set that has shocks ?

Is it possible to put straps or something into the crate holes?
This particular crate doesn't have convenient holes anywhere so I have a motorcycle cargo net that I got from Harbor Freight that I use to hold things down that might stick up or to keep the crate from rattling when its empty and flattened. The crate handles can be used for straps but with them being front to back, its not a secure holder. There are other folding crate brands that do have lots of holes that could be used for straps, I am just not sure how strong they might be.
Any ideas for a cargo net for your box or for the Lectric large rear basket?

You can get them on amazon. I just ordered thousands of them recently and will be selling them on the ebikeproducts.com website in a few weeks. It'll be about 90 cents a strap (sold in packs of 10) and launching around 6/1.
What do you recommend for a delivery rear rack for a Hyperscrambler 2?
Whoa! That is one SWEET ebike!!! 100+ miles at over 30mph and dual suspension! Style reminds me of my old Puch Cobra moped.
As far as a delivery rack goes, I can only picture a custom rack working with that ebike. I would perhaps look for a sturdy rear ebike rack on the market now and find a way to modify it to fit on it. I would see if there is a way to attach the rack to a point right above the rear shocks and also to the bars that support the seat to make a triangular support.
The big issue I would be concerned about is getting on and off the bike with a load or something that is higher than the seat as I would not be able to swing my leg over and would almost have to lean the bike near to the ground which could be hard if the load is heavy. Just a thought. Carrying stuff may have to hang on the side of the racks to keep the weight lower to the ground for better balance.
