This was so much fun!! I really enjoyed your video and doing this with you both and l loving on Bondi!! For those of you looking for the "Myths of free flight" video, that will be up on my channel next Tuesday, after Bondi and Vinny go on a date on Sunday 🤗 We had so much fun, mine turned in to a 3 part series.
Powerful speaking on your part and truth in this video, subbed on the spot to your channel as well. I had no idea the YT community offers so many resources for bird people.
Ever since you posted your podcast last week I've been doing a lot of self evaluation with what I'm doing with my African Grey. I work from home a lot so normally I have him on a stand near me while I work and try to give him something to do but he generally just ignored it and would just sit there or get himself into trouble. Right after watching your podcast, I decided to try something new so I opened my bin of bird toys (mostly the brand that you guys sell on your website) and added 6 new toys to his cage (I have a tendency to stockpile supplies). I then chose to switch him to having pellets in the morning and veggies in the evening so that, after our morning training session and shower, I could add his breakfast of pellets to all the foraging toys and he would be kept busy while I worked. It honestly worked like a charm and he takes forever to forage so he's kept busy for hours at a time with breaks in between where he'll sit on my knee to get head scratches and preen before heading back for more foraging before his evening training session and dinner. It's honestly been so peaceful and I never thought of doing this sooner because his previous owner kept him locked up 24/7 and he would do anything to get out and away from his cage but now I can shut the door if I need to during the day without much of a fuss which is great because I'm going out of town soon and this should make it a lot easier on my bird sitter to care for him. Thanks so much for all the great content and I love how passionate Marlene was in this video and how all your ideas meshed together!
I have two budgies and both play very differently. My boy Sweetie loves to play what I call The Whistle Game. He'll whistle at me a couple notes and then I have to copy him. Then he'll whistle the same tune but with more notes and I have to copy him. This keeps going until I mess up (and it's always me to mess up!) and then he gets all excited because he won, haha! He also loves when I sing to him or talk to him in other languages. My girl Lemon loves to find things. She loves it when I hide something in my hands or pocket or make a foraging box and she's got to find the prize inside - usually a bit of millet or a small toy she's loving that day. She also loves to throw her jingle ball and I have to bring it back so she can throw it over and over. If they were bigger I would look into free flying them, but it's too dangerous for them outside. Instead, they have their own bedroom with all sorts of things hanging off the ceiling and a play gym and the like as well as flying laps around the house in the morning.
I love that you did this. It's such a great conversation to explain what engagement is and see what it looks like from two very different bird-owners/enthusiasts. I felt like Marlene's hashtag was self-explanatory: Bird's aren't meant to always be in their cage like decoration in your home. They need to relate and be active and interact with you just as much as your dog or cat does. Also, I like how Marlene shows that cages aren't evil. They have a purpose as a place for your bird to eat and rest or retreat to when it wants alone time and a safe place for you to contain your bird when you can't interact with it or you're going to be away from home. But it isn't meant to be your bird's only environment, just like your dog's kennel isn't.
I am so glad this collab happened! I've been watching both of your channels for a really long time and you both have helped me realize that I might be one of those people that would be a good match for a bird. I'm just waiting until I can financially support a bird, and when I can, I hope I can work with some birds at my local parrot/bird shelter and find one that might be a match for my lifestyle. Thank you, Jamieleigh and Dave for helping Marlene clarify what she meant by #Engagednotcaged
Emmi that is so great! I started volunteering at a Parrot rescue because of what I learned from Marlene's channel! You will learn so much at a rescue AND get to know a potential bird before adopting to see if it fits. Plus often, a bird will pick you.
Even pet stores or specifically bird stores maybe you could go and almost do the same things, for example, there’s a store here where I live in Vegas that they allow ppl to interact w their birds and it really allows you to get a little bit of an understanding of birds if you have no experience holding one. The rescues here I’m not familiar w except what I’ve seen online and when I tried to correspond I got no reply to my requests for bird fostering but a rescue is also an excellent idea and imo a better place to get a bird. I’m all for a rescue before a pet store animal any day and I will do that next time if I ever get another bird. It’s a long story how I got the one I have and why I didn’t go to shelter. You seem so smart and doing the proper research and due diligence and I’m sure any bird you choose w be very lucky to have such a great human!
@@user-qp3pu5yv1e Thank you very much! I live in Minnesota and the only bird store in the entire state isn't very good and I wouldn't want to support them, but I did think about getting a young bird from a pet store for a little while. I decided against it since a rescue about 30-40 minutes away from me actually really encourages people to volunteer with the birds and requires you to volunteer with them a couple or a few times before you can adopt, which I think is really cool and a good way to ensure people know what they're getting into! :)
Great video and information. I prepared for a year before I took the plunge and got a parrot. I watched , subscribed and joined Marlene and Birdtricks. I use information and techniques from both. It’s only been 9 weeks and when i look at it that way Chico has come a long way and is doing great. Thank you to both Birdtricks and Marlene Mc’Cohen.
I'm so grateful for both of your channels. You helped prepare me for my first (and currently only) bird, a parrotlet who has been brought to the shelter multiple times for aggression, and for some reason decided she liked me so I adopted her. I can't have her out as long as I would like because she's small and likes to run on the floor and it isn't safe, but she has a bedroom cage and a huge flight cage with lots of toys and foraging bowls for daytime. I also have her out for hours a day where she can run and fly around, do a couple training sessions, and get lots of scritches. I also wanna give a shoutout to wingsnpaws, who has a video which really helped with her biting problem. I have a happy little green bean thanks to all the information you all provide!
I have a rescued Quaker parrot. I never had a bird before but he needed help, so we did. He was so traumatized and he is so smart it breaks my heart. He is making constant progress thanks to both birdtricks and Marlene! Thanks!
Echoing all the comments about how much I enjoy seeing you guys collaborate. I watch both of your channels regularly and appreciate the perspective that each of you come from. There is much value in target and trick training but admittedly, I'm closer to Marlene's style of simply shaping my birds' behaviour by merely coexisting rather than click-rewarding. Still, the openness and positivity that you showed by listening to one another is commendable. I really loved this video. (Also, I irresponsibly want to see many Bondi-Vinnie gangsta eggs in the future. hee!)
Hi hello , I have joined your you utube channel. . .I have a ten year old red rump she's a female . the problem is when she is in or out if I pick anything up like her stainless steel bowels food drink bowels even our tea caddy and sometimes with a kettle when I make tea the kettle is black .she comes out around 3 ish till tea time then say 30 mins she will be out .she has a play pen too with perches and and toys .I give her breakfast when I get up in a China dish which has a compartment the little round part for an egg to go in so I put cornflakes in there with rice krispies with multi grain krispies she has a tissue paper to wipe her beak .she's fine with them, .so sometimes she goes in the kitchen and she will sit on the 6 ft fridge , it has a towel on top in case she makes a mess also sits on her cage so have a towel con top of her night blanket . Its. her dishes mainly and saucepans she thinks they are hers even if I open the cupboard to get something from there she will look for the saucepans . If I use a mirror to do my ears or nose .when I do it she cant be out has will try to bite me she has always done this since she was a baby .sometimes she wont step up .and tries to bite then. 9 times our of ten .I think she is trying to take over the house .I have had lots of budgies and cockatiels about 5 I have .never had any other bird do anything like this .. any help is appreciated . Many thanks andy from the uk .
You three saved my 2.5-year-old Indian Ringneck, Yoshi, from becoming a breeder instead of a pet. When I got him about 4 months ago, he had never been in a cage, and was allowed to just use his owner's house as his own personal aviary. We don't do that. He had no training, but was tame. So he had to have his wings clipped after being chased down for 20 minutes. So he HATED me. I binge-watched y'all's vlogs, learned TONS about training, bonding, etc., and worked, worked, worked with him. He's now the sweetest, funniest little "blue chicken" (that's what my husband calls him) in the world! We all, especially Yoshi, owe you three a debt of gratitude. God bless!!! ❤
What a lovely surprise to find my two fave Bird Channels Collaborating! Great info as usual and I cried with Marlene 😢😭 🙌🏻💪🏻 I support you all 100%! Thank you for all your great informative vids Marlene & Bird Tricks!! ❤️🙏🏻🙌🏻🦜💪🏻🤗🤓
I love that you guys collaborated!! I've been watching Marlene Mc'Cohen's Channel for almost 2 years now and what I really loved learning from her is how much easier it is to engage with your bird then I thought. Things that weren't mentioned in the video are things like including your bird in your day-to-day life activities. Birds have a flock mentality and we - as owners are part of their flock. They WANT to be with us, doing things with us. So, for example, when you shower... bring your bird and put it on the curtain rod of the shower (they also sell shower perches). When you are watching TV in the living room or eating dinner let them be near you on a Play Stand or little jungle gym with some of their toys. "Engage" doesn't only mean you have to stop and focus 100% of your attention on them talking to them, petting them, and/or teaching them tricks. ☺ Because of Marlene I started volunteering at a local Parrot Rescue 5 months ago, and can now give a few birds a much better life than the little birds I had starting in 1999 before any social media existed!! I plan to rescue over time 2 Cockatiels, 2 Lovebirds, and some Canaries and Finches (birds I've had before mostly caged).... and then move up to either a Red Lored Amazon or a Galah Cockatoo (If I can find one around age 20 or so, so that I don't out live it).
More engagement ideas and anecdotes folks!! One thing I do with my birds when no one is in the mood to fly is I put them on my shoulder and go for walks around my home with visits to windows and family members and include commentary about what we're seeing and who we're talking to or sing them a song while we walk. They get pretty into it.
SCORE! I've wanted you to collaborate with Marlene. I just saw her latest vlog and she was talking again about #engagednotcaged and I was yelling at the screen, "you need to talk to Jami and Dave!" And wallah you're in the same space talking about this very subject. 👏👏👏 The winners here are the birds 🐦. 🎉🎉 I can't wait for the rest of the videos from your time together. Last thing: LOVE the book you referred to. 5 Love Languages. It should be required reading for couples, yes, but EVERYONE could benefit from it just because. The world would be a better place if we understood each other more.
Absolutely incredible video guys. My partner and I are new to your channel, however have watched Marlene for a long time now. Its amazing to see you guys collaborate on something. The way we keep our GCC and Cockatiel engaged is through: 1. Training sessions. That could be teaching new tricks, recall, ascending, descending, distance flight through our house, harness training, teaching to forage. Anything! Our birds love it and are always up for the challenge. 2. Cuddles/Nap time. Exactly what it sounds like. After training we let our birds fly free and entertain themselves for a while. Paco does this by hitting his beak off our wall, singing and talking. Aayu does this by throwing toys at us. They tend to come down to sit with us and watch some TV. The four of us sit together and the birds get plenty of attention (if thats what they want). They know when they are tired in the afternoon that they can just sit with us. 3. Shower time. Yes, we take our birds to shower with us. Paco sits on his perch and dances to the music we have playing while getting wet. Aayu flies from one perch, to our shower head, to our heads, to my hands, to the perch again and so on. He sometimes stops to actually bathe in my cupped hands if we are lucky XD 4. Play Time. This means literally throwing toys to Aayu for him to throw back, singing to Paco and repeating what he says, flipping Aayu upside down and letting him be a bat bird (he chooses when he wants to do this and sometimes initiates it!), put music on and dance with them. We probably look like idiots to the non-bird people that walk past our flat. 5. Going Outside. Our birds are not free flight trained one bit, however Paco is harness trained and joins us for walks around 3 times a week. He is welcome in many stores which he enjoys going in to see some of his new human "friends". We do some outdoor flight sessions on his harness with him too. Those are just 5 ways we keep our birdies engaged and not caged. I am not saying we are engaging the entire time they are out of the cage as we like them to entertain themselves at times, however they get plenty of attention and love from us.
AWESOME, awesome! My two top youtube channels together! I've been following Marlene for years and have always wondered if ya'll would collab one day. Awesome stuff here! Just super happy!
So glad y’all did a video together. I’m a new bird owner and have been struggling on what is correct and what is wrong and how much time Harley needs out of his cage. I’m learning so much from both of your channels
When Marlene said “I can’t “ and started to describe the pain she felt when seeing forgot birds in cages, I totally felt it! She’s right, they deserve so much better. From finches to macaws, birds are absolute greatest companions!
This is a dream team video. Both your channels are favorites of both me and my cockatiel! We engage with our Nemo by our peekaboo and my husband loves to tease her. It sounds funny, but we each "play" with Nemo differently. She won't fly down to me yet, we have been working for a three or more months, but her wings are clipped so her flight is difficult. Nemo also loves car rides and sits above my head. It sounds weird, but she also loves the beach with me, she doesn't like water otherwise, but will hop off my shoulder into the surf, weird but true. Love you guys, thank you, Maren
This February we added a conure to our family and your videos help so much. I have watched so many of both or your videos and am so happy I did. Our baby is so much a part of our family. This video gave me even more to think about and work on with our little one. Thank you so much for taking the time to help the birds.
I love the collab and I've loved both you guys and with Marlene and all of your guys' birds for a while now. Great points made in the chat also! P.S.: I can't help but hear Vinny talking in the background lol
YAY!!!! I just couldn't wait when you meet Marlene!!! First Mikey the Macaw and Friends and now her!!!! I honestly think you collab with the most loving people! And it's true - there is so much hate among parrots people, which is so sad... I am from Poland and I can't stand conceited and self opinionated people who think only they understand how demanding parrots are. When you seek for help or advice most probably you will hear how stupid you are and how little do you know. It's so wrong! We should support each other to help our birds to have the best life we can give them, right? You are so positive and encouraging! You really have love, not only for parrots (which is obvious) but also for people! Love you guys ❤️
Wow. I got emotional too. Thanks to all three of you for your hard work, love, and passion for birds and sharing that with us. All of you inspire many.
I want to add birds want to spend time WITH YOU. They're very social with flocks of thousands. I love Marlene's "engaged not caged" motto. My rbc is not interested in receiving a treat after a trick. But loves doing tricks because she is happy to learn it and loves me getting excited at her doing it. They love positive happy interactions with us. In a cage they're lonely. They need as much time out of the cage with as possible, washing dishes, taking showers, watching tv, playing with toys with you like knocking over toddler stacking cups, swinging on a bungee cord, flying to different rooms to play peekaboo, so many things and ways to engage a parrot. Guys these birds are like toddlers. Love them, engage them, teach them, and when they need rest let them rest in their cage. You are great Marlene!
I loved this! Elaboration! Every situation is unique. After listening to the podcast, it seemed like people could get the wrong idea, so this was great. Quality over quantity. Get to know your bird and see what works. Educate yourself. I know this is hard when learning, because all there can be conflicting info and because it isn't a one size fits all when it comes to birds. Just use your best judgement. I personally think volunteering and working with professionals is a good way to get experience for birds. Hope that helps. I was actually able to get my birds from a caring place that could help me when I was learning.
Finally it has happened. I have been following both you and Marlene for a while now and have learnt a lot about both birds and people, or should I say bird people. I have always believed that when we connect with a bird or any animal we are signing a contract to help teach and learn from each other, and both you and Marlene seem on the same wavelength there will be great things happening in the not to distant future. When I had my Cockatiel I would often make a Crystal circle and he would sit in the centre with me while I meditated, so in return I always ask before putting my hand in his cage.
So super great to see this collaboration! You guys got me 😭over here. I love the work that you guys are doing. Thank you so much for the love and light you give to us and our feathered soul mates. Blessings to you all! XOXO ❤ ☀️🙏
My bird loves it when I am singing for her. When I grab my guitar she is like: yaass. She gets all excited and she flies to the 'listening perch' (sounds weird, but that is a perch where she loves to sit when I am about to sing for her) and she starts dancing. While I am singing/dancing, she dances/sings along with me. And when she is tired I sing softly while she is preening my face or she is singing softly with me. It is cute hahah :)) most of the time my sister is like: what are you doing? And I am like: I am singing and dancing with my bird haha, my sis doesn't understand. And she loves to train, doing tricks and stuff. I love my crazy little birb :')) (sorry for the grammar mistakes)
I work with a Raven and I train him with food but he also thrives when he gets applause. He will do all of his tricks for applause alone but I can hone in on those tricks when it's just us solo with treats. I have to comment that I agree with all of this though, quality time is the best time. I spend an hour a day with my boy and it's quality time that he looks forward to, and so do I. I could spend all day with him and it would probably have less of an impact than my quality time. Love you guys!
So glad to see this. I enjoy watch both channels. It's obvious if you watch her channel you know her birds do have and use cages... but not leaving them there 24/7.
My rock pigeon, Pige spent her entire 17 years completely free ... no cage ... she slept in the laundry, with the door propped open so she could go out when she wanted. We didn’t have many predators on Cocos, and the cats were terrified of her hahaha... she used to follow me to school everyday and then would fly home, she’d come with me to the middle of the jungle, or to the beach. Seriously, the best life ever! When she passed it broke my heart... I thought I could never have another bird because I hated seeing birds in cages. But after seeing Mikey the Macaw, Adventures of Roku, Marlene and you guys I realised I could give a bird a great life here on the mainland ... so.... after 18 months of research into parrot behaviour, all the different types etc etc, I will be bringing my little Tuli home next month... I cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with her.
Thank you ALL so very much! I absolutely love this collaboration. I’m the right person for a bird and one day I WILL have one. Right now, I don’t have the time that a bird needs. I know that, through an open minded view of your videos on what birds really need. When I am finally able to get one, I will be in touch with you both to get guidance in order to do things right, from the very beginning. Excellent video, thank you!
When I was 13 I had a budgie and a love bird. I never heard of engaging or feeding them more than millet and now I feel so much guilt about that. I don’t think we know any better and I think it’s great your educating people. Now when I get another bird I will not make those same mistakes.
I’ve been watching you guys and Marlene for a while as well as Gotcha the Cockatoos channel. Seeing Marlene so upset regarding the issue of being caged and forgotten reminds me of how Gotchas owner ended up with him after he had been locked in a cage and basically abused for years. He was aggressive and non-trusting at first because all he had known of humans was a cage and hurt. However now that she’s earned his trust and bonded with him it’s like a whole new bird. He’s a cockatoo so of course he’s loud and throws tantrums occasionally but his bond with his owner is amazing and boy is he funny when he gets wound up and starts talking. We started watching both of your channels when we started discussing the possibility of a bird, we are still working on find the right species/breed whatever it’s called of parrot but all three channels have helped us prepare tremendously❤️
I love gotcha! My first video i seen of him was the one were he freaked out about the evil pumpkin seeds. And now I think I have watched all his videos. I would love a parrot but I'm scared my 4 cats would try yo kill him. So hopefully some time in the future.
I love seeing you guys collab! When people think about animal welfare, too many people put all the emphasis on having as much space as possible for animals to move around, but enrichment and engagement are so completely important! Big empty space with no interaction or enrichment doesn't do the animals much good, and I think this video does a good job explaining it.
All you guys are helping me so much as a new bird owner. Thank you so much for all that you share about having loving, respectful, fun caring lives with our birds.
Nice!!!! You used Marlene's tag!!!! This is amazing!!!! Great collab!!!!!!!!!! What do you do, if you dont have a cage at all???? No cages.. what do you do??? They are trained, they are FULLLLLLLY engaged, all the activities we do. No cages, no money for big enough cages so no cages, just... a home, they sit or fly to wherever they want. 7 out of the 9 are freeflight trained, outdoor(and indoor) FULLLLLLLY RECALLED trained. Is it a problem? If its allllll day long? It can be VERY VERY HARD to do. Sometimes it feels like they choke me... the amount of care and attention I need to put in so they all feel well engaged and happy nor jelly of each other, respected and not getting into troubles, is HUGE in levels that sometimes making me think OMG what did I got myself into?! I love each and everyone of them, not to be understood wrong. I chose to accept them all, and I turn down others each and every day, since sadly its just me and I am yet to be a rehab center or anything like that, I wish I could take in more but I bearly manage(they way it feels) to do welk with all those, and you should never take more than you can handle... Thank you for all that you do!!!! You guys and marlene are making this world better. For real!!!
If it works for you then that's what works for you! If, however, they're getting into dangerous situations or attacking people, or doing things that is leading to negative interactions, that's when you have signs to look for another solution. I can have my toucan out for longer periods than my parrots because he can't chew through things like they can so he can get in far less trouble, haha!
@@BirdTricks Thank you for your answer!! Have you or Dave or Marlene ever tried to raise a bird out 24/7? No cage at all? Does it doing any damage??? I wonder. yea out of all of them the only current parrot resident is the super disabled african grey that is doing great acording to your plans as we spoke(puncake who is #FLATOUTAMAZING and now is flying!!!! Yeaaaaaaa he did it very soon after we spoke) and he is the second bird out of the 9 that can not fly outside yet nor does fully listen inside, but he is only with me 2 months so he will change, all the rest are crows(who ARE distructive, but wont chew) doves pigeons mynahs and that is it for now(+two pitbulls and a kid ;) all are natural disabled birds who I am afraid letting feel caged since they need the outdoor and can cope with being with the outdoor flocks of birds they are part of, pigeons are coming each evening into the house and crows are recalled trained so they go back in after 4,3 hours outside during sun time. Mynahs are just choosing to wonder inside, and the parrot is in current training and is the only exotic bird here, who wont have any same birds out here in the local wild. I do wish to have enclogures fitted, to help each have the own safe space. I would love to have my own space too, they chocke me mentally never attacking or getting into trubles(well they sometimes do but when they dont its because I spend alllll my times watching over and engaging each one to be able to be in the same space(they chose to hang in, with me) so maybr my situation is a tad different. But yea, feeling chocked by the amount of care and attention 9 flighted birds of diff kinds need+dogs(not even saying a kid ;) hahaha omg) it can be a lot and since no cages at all, I dont have my own space and place to unwind from the constant caring. They are hard to raise, I did not get a permit for no reason I think I do well as a rehabber and trainer, but sometimes it just feels too much, like it is closing on me I guess I need to try getting each a cage... especially the CAG babe. Thank you for helping me process, leraning how to be and do better. Sorry, just got deep here haha *wipes tears* I dont regret the way I train them or the fact they are family, with a choise to leave they do not take, but I would love to try something eles, for my share in life, as a human not just mom to humans and animals, including birds. Thank you dear! Enlightening. I took a lot from your replay! That was AN AMAZING COOL-AB with Marla I wish I could see you do more training with her other birds too, although seeing vinnie and bondi was priceless!!) I enjoyed all your and marlas videos!!!!! Thank you. I had a sh@$%y day and your vids and replays made it better! Lovefrom my Israeli flock and I And again, 😍😘🤗 Thank you for all that you do!!!! You guys and marlene are making this world better. For real. Val Prem
My cockatiels always have their gate open. They always go out and go back on their own. They usually love staying on top of it, or somewhere near the cage. The whole house is their cage together with me lol
WOW WOW WOW YOU ARE ALL SO MUCH ON THE SAME PAGE and I think this Kinda Had to be Talked about and by doing so everyone has a better understanding re all Birds really
Very cool. I watch both of these peoples channels. And love them for different reasons. At the end of the day. They care and share their knowledge about birds. And I have learnt so much from all of them.
Really enjoyed the video! Keep spreading the knowledge that birds are more than an ornament in a cage! ❤️ Here are 3 ways I keep mine engaged in everyday life: 1. I let a different bird hang out with me each day while prepping their food. You can tell they feel special when they get to sneak extra nibbles on the food and hang out with me. 2. I like bringing my birds in the bathroom while I’m getting ready. (Credit to Marlene) They’ll perch on the faucet, towel rack or shower door and it’s funny they’ll start preening like they know it’s pamper time. 3. My daughter loves going to the park down the street from our house so I bought a harness so I can bring along one of my birds with me. They love the opportunity to get outside, get some direct sunlight and see a different surrounding than inside the house. None of these things require some extreme extra effort and they all make the birds feel like part of the family. They are all things I would have had to do anyways and I can easily include my birds.
Hi jamie, dave and marlene.. I think you people are special to understand about parrots, not all people can do it.. By watching this video you have cleared lot of sterotypes.. I learned lot from this video.. Quality over how much time spend outside. Nice you have answered all question about independance.. Thanks for your video.. P.S:The link for marlene channel has error, not showing channel page..
I have actual tears from the end of this video. I love both of your channels so much and I am happy that we are able to build such a beautiful community full of amazing humans who love, care for, and are just doing their best to improve bird lives❤️ they are such a unique animal and so much goes into their proper care… thank you for all you do.
I loved this, because there is so much conflict in the bird community, yet here is an example that bird people can get along. I think anyone who has watched enough of both channels know that Birdtricks and Marlene don't exactly have the same ideas about bird ownership. Yet, despite their differences, they were able to come together and produce an education, respectful video. I love both channels, great job guys!
her point at end of being engaged with birds should be the same with ANY pet. cats, dogs, birds, etc. bc any pet that has been ignored is going to act out, be depressed, and in turn be caged, abused, and mistreated. Ive seen people with dogs who leave them for hours and hours with zero attention, dont take them out, ignore them. then when the dog potties in house, chews things up, barks, or is bad they get beaten, whipped, thrown outside, yelled at. etc. its not the dogs fault! if u have to piss/shit and are made to hold it for hours and hours eventually u will just go on urself.and then imagine being terrified bc u know ur going to beaten and humiliated for it. imagine needing love and attention so bad that u are begging for it thru any action u know, only to be turned away and receive anger instead. it breaks my heart to think of ALL the animals that ignorant selfish people get and then refuse to rehome them in a better place! IK someone who has a dog who is alone 10hrs every day, then when they come home the dog is ignored for the rest of the time bc they are "tired". so the dog never gets to go out, never gets to play, nothing. and hes the best dog ever. so so sweet.Ive said, I can find a good home for him since u dont have time. "oh god no, i could NEVER get rid ofmy dog, I love him!" No! you're selfish!
Thanks to all of you for doing this collaboration! I try to absorb all the knowledge I can from BOTH of your channels although the content is so different. I really appreciate the clarification and conversation. I am trying to find my balance as a responsible first bird owner and find that I utilize a mix of all your philosophies to help me through the sticky spots. The youtube bird world thanks you all for showing some intelligent solidarity.
Omgosh my two favorite UA-camrs. 0.0Marlene's desire to bring awareness is working. I've been in love with all animals all my life, but my mother, who doesn't really attach to anything and gets jealous easy, watched some of BirdTricks' videos about Morgan (that I showed her to illustrate what I intended to do with Cyrano, my IRN, for indoor recall) and she was the first person whose voice caught my bird's attention. He'd be sitting there (rather, hopping around lol) chattering to himself, and my mom came to visit for the first time since I got him. He was ENAMORED with her voice. It's higher-pitched than mine and flute-like and he'd just stop making noises and cock his head.. I think she's fallen for him because he likes her so much. I wasn't even actively looking for a bigger cage for him (I recently moved and planned to get him a bigger cage once we settled in) but she went out onto Craigslist and sent me a list lol. She even bought it for me when I selected one and Dad rust-proofed it. My mom tends to be a tight-wad, so I'm still floored by this even though it was a few months ago.So tell Marlene it's happening. But y'all's viewers need to be bringing this awareness and regard for birds in our own homes and lives, with our family and friends, for it to really take effect. "It starts with me" right? :)
Such a great video. Thanks to all three of you for doing this. Reasures me of the intent of "Engaged Not Caged".🐦 Love to all of you. 💕 Love that studio too.
Most of us know someone or have seen someone who has a bird as a decoration, they don’t take the time to fully understand how damaging it is to lock up a highly intelligent, sensitive little being. I love Marlene’s attitude and don’t really understand how her motto was mistaken, all you have to do is watch her vids to know how important it is to her to keep her birds mentally stimulated not just free roaming. Side note... Marlene your ponytail is popping in this vid. Adorable as always ❤️
This video is amazing. It is full of values that I grew up with and continue to try and share with everyone around me. My husband and I rescue all species of animals and there are so many traits that transfer between animals. They all have their own personalities and they all deserve love and the best lives possible. I constantly am searching to learn new things and you guys are definitely the spot. So much positivity and encouragement! Thank you for all you do in the animal community
Great video from all of you!! I try very hard to keep my bird engaged while she’s out of her cage, but I have fallen into the pitfall of quality is better than quality before. We stay engaged using a portable training station, which is a handled basket. It provides a convenient pooping place, training & keeps her sunflower seed addIction somewhat controlled. Sunflower seeds are the only treat she will train for besides praise, which works in a pinch if I run out of seeds. She has learned so much, she is target trained (not glamorous but the building block of all other tricks) step-up, wave, high 5, twirl, show her wings, inside free flying from different heights (thanks Morgan!) & we are very slowly working on harness training. I believe quality over quantity is extremely important & has allowed me to have a wonderful companion.
Great collaboration guys. I don't currently have a bird -- I'm LEARNING and I volunteer at a facility that has boarding/education/adoption so I can learn. This is exactly why I am not running out to adopt (for the wrong reasons) ... I'm not ready. I will adopt but I have to set myself and future bird up for success, truly.
I love both of these channels and have watched them both for a long time. I don’t have a bird but have a passion for animals. I have done a lot of pet rescue and all pets need quality time, training, and attention. You all have big hearts. Such an inspiration.
I am so glad that I found your video You have made me realize how much I was doing wrong with my Bird. Now me and my bird Chewy are doing much better less biting more time engaging and time outside.
Marlene stop you're making me cry too omggggggg I think this is an important message that I try spreading to everyone that I interact with. How I personally engage my bird outside his cage is by dancing and getting excited, cuddles on lazy weekends, going on car rides, or taking him into stores with me. We also just started our flying journey so I'll "throw" him from out front door to our bathroom while my boyfriend films. He likes to mess with him, so to distract him when he is getting in trouble we will start an impromptu flying session to tire him out and give him positive reinforcement rather than punishing him for going to attack. Although we just learned last night that he flies so far and so well that we have to start in the bathroom and toss him to his cage or he is gonna crash into the shower wall. Before he would land on the ground right before. Such improvement is already being made in such a short time. I am so excited, and proud of him.
I follow both of you and I am so happy that I have found you. You both have given me so much information I didn't know about birds. I've had my budgie for 7 yrs and have just thought that hes just shy and doesn't like to be touched and maybe still that might be his personality. But in watching your videos I have learned that I have actually been neglecting him by not engaging more with him. And like you said it's because of the lack of knowledge in how to engage, communicate, and paying attention to their body language. So I have slowly been trying little things to make him more comfortable with just us being close to him. And also taking what I've learned from you all and explaining it to the rest of the family. All this I've found while actually researching to get a parrot my grandma is asking for. I look forward to more of your videos which are not just informative but fun too and keeping you updated on my journey to engaging and finding a new parrot. Thanks guys much appreciated.
Wow ive always loved Marlenes videos, but she truely is a wonderful, understanding empathetic person. And wow, what a brilliant message. Thank you so much for this.
I love this video!!!! Cages are not prisons!!! My bird (a cockatiel) dictates what he wants. If he wants out, he will do lots of contact calls and run round the bottom of his cage. I take him out until he tells me he wants back in.
Friends think that I spoil my sun conure, Sunshine, because he is out of his cage and with me when I am home. But we have such quality time, playing, training and him having naps on my knee or pre-bedtime snuggles in my shirt. I keep him engaged in new ways so often. Our latest thing, banging on a tambourine, I got from following Alex the Honk. Engage not cage all the way!!
Food for Thought!!! Thanks for the collab. I've followed both channels for a while. I'll visit the local parrot rescue this comming weekend... they have mostly greys, many with Aspergillosis (and it's a 'reflocking'/'rehabitating' project... no takeouts ;p ) . Hopefully won't be a too hard experience, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.
OK, had a quite positive experience. Didn't really know about the trafficing aspect of parrots to the extent it's happening. Thanks for keeping on your subjects, which hopefully gets people to think twice. They are not only cute and cuddly animals like a dog. You basically add an eternal 5 year old that needs to be kept busy or things will go wrong.
Mine stays out pretty much all day unless I am not in the house or it’s bedtime. He likes to sit on my controller while I play video games or watch me do my sketches, sometimes he helps by chewing on the paper lol. Glad people like you are putting the word out for the birds. Budgies especially are prone to being locked up all day :( But I knew a guy that had a beautiful McCaw and kept it locked up in a cage too small and didn’t let it out, complaining about how it acted. I wish people did more research before getting these birds. Luckily for the mccaw he gave it away to an older woman who spoils it and has a huge greenhouse she turned into an aviary and she gets all sorts of love and attention now.
I’m so in love with these collaboration videos! Thanks Jamieleigh, Dave and Marlene (and George!) for getting together to show positive support for each other and having a conversation about some of the differences in opinion. I watch each channel religiously now so I can literally FEEL how you are different in your approaches but there is no doubt in my mind that the parrots in both of your flocks are engaged and happy. I’m so grateful to be able to learn and experience that even though I don’t have a parrot. Side note- why does Dave look like a giant compared to you ladies in this video?! Is that real or perspective? Haha
I am sick today but as soon as I opened this video I could feel your energy coursing through your voice. It is clear that you care about your birds. you want me to run to the nearest parrot rescue and take them all home(but I can’t cause I’m 10😐).My sister and I our working on training our parents too see the good side of owning birds, that they have the ability to be loud, but they also can create incredible bonds with their owner, they might poop every 20 minutes, but they can also learn some awesome tricks because their AWSOME AND SMART AND CUTE AND FUNNY AND AWESOME.
Touching on the elephant topic. I think the issue most people have is the fact that they were taken out of the natural environment and placed in captivity to begin with, while yes the elephants that were rescued had a hard time, we now are limiting the amount of elephants being removed from their natural habitat. So yes they need a task, but the cycle still needs to end. We also know that a lot of the elephants were not being treated as well as your show birds. There is a difference between animal being exploited in shows vs animals that are cared for and enriched while also educating. Just my humble opinion of course :)
I live watching both of you’re channels you’ve helped me so much. I’ve recently taken on an orange winged amazon who will come to me to engage and take pine nuts, small pieces of almonds or walnuts but won’t attempt to come out of the cage. I’ve started touch training and he will touch the stick very gently for which I click & reward but he stands up very straight if I attempt to put my hand or arm near to ask his permission to step up, he’s a 20yr old man and im just taking my time time not rushing him just would live him to come out of his own accord, he also loves to come and be showered at the front of his cage when I bring out the spray bottle with warm water, I just love him so much 💙
This was so much fun!!
MARLENE MC'COHEN love you!
More Collaboration With Birtldtricks Please...
Powerful speaking on your part and truth in this video, subbed on the spot to your channel as well. I had no idea the YT community offers so many resources for bird people.
Marlene!!!!!איך עליך זה היה שיתוף פעולה ח ל ו מ י
MARLENE MC'COHEN awesome!!
Thank you for the ideas!
Vinny's commentary in the background. 10/10
Tina Gaspard so well stated 💗
@@BirdTricks yes💕💕
Yeah, your right. The cage is their safety spot for me time
I am so glad this collab happened!
My two favorite UA-cam channels just came together. Marlene that breakdown was so beautiful and heartfelt.
Hi! I am about to get a parrotlet, do you have any tips/tricks?
Collab with Marlene McCohen!! HOW AMAZING!
(Also, I irresponsibly want to see many Bondi-Vinnie gangsta eggs in the future. hee!)
I love how you guys in the bird community get together and it’s about the birds and there’s no egos or anything s such. ❤️ it all!
Great video
I love both of you guys and im so happy that you did a collab!
Marlene's heart is so big! This was great! Thank you!
Velvet Rayne it is 💗💗💗
You three saved my 2.5-year-old Indian Ringneck, Yoshi, from becoming a breeder instead of a pet.
I got my birds so unexpectedly and i had no clue how to manage them and Marlene really helped me
More engagement ideas and anecdotes folks!!
The winners here are the birds 🐦.
The way we keep our GCC and Cockatiel engaged is through:
He sometimes stops to actually bathe in my cupped hands if we are lucky XD
Three amazing hearts coming together to better the lives of birds!!❤❤❤
So glad y’all did a video together. I’m a new bird owner and have been struggling on what is correct and what is wrong and how much time Harley needs out of his cage. I’m learning so much from both of your channels
So awesome! So glad you collab with Marlene! 💕
You three are all blessed with thus intuitive gift of understanding your birds. Thank you for the collaboration!!!
Oh when Marlene started crying my throat got so tight and my eyes got all watery😭😭😭😢😢😢
me too
This February we added a conure to our family and your videos help so much. I have watched so many of both or your videos and am so happy I did. Our baby is so much a part of our family. This video gave me even more to think about and work on with our little one. Thank you so much for taking the time to help the birds.
I. Am. mind blown. 🤯
_They Collabed_
XOXO ❤ ☀️🙏
I just watched Marlene's video and now I'm gonna watch urs........soooooo super excited! I'm so happy yall collabed
Wow I bet you have a very happy little birdy 🐦❤️ xx
Yes love yall both!!! So glad this happened
I'm so glad this collab happened! The video is super informative and interesting! Love Marlene, Jaimeleigh and Dave ❤️
I love both your channels. Loved this topic! Thanks for sharing with the bird community!
Marlene is as awesome as you and Dave❤️
I play the cup game. 3 cups 1 almond under one. move the cups. it's hilarious when he gets the right one.
Yeah, my conures love that too, but I constantly have to think of ways to make it harder for them because they're so incredibly smart! ❤️
Great video!!! I watch Marlene all the time. You guys are the very best bird people that I have seen anywhere!!!
I heard Vinny say "Sure!" in agreement when you finished your statement about the training, Marlene.
Thank you so much for all that you share about having loving, respectful, fun caring lives with our birds.
yayyyy you posted with marlene! i just finished watching her video!
Zoe Williams her ending killed me! “Hi bird” “hi cutie” omg 💗💗💗
@@dnonya5208 Yes, Marlene is a doll.
Wow,this was wonderful to see,ty Jaimie,Dave and Marlene-you all want what's best for birds, and work hard to educate people

Thank you for your answer!!
They are hard to raise, I did not get a permit for no reason I think I do well as a rehabber and trainer, but sometimes it just feels too much, like it is closing on me
I guess I need to try getting each a cage... especially the CAG babe.
Thank you for helping me process, leraning how to be and do better.
Sorry, just got deep here haha *wipes tears*
I dont regret the way I train them or the fact they are family, with a choise to leave they do not take, but I would love to try something eles, for my share in life, as a human not just mom to humans and animals, including birds.
Thank you dear! Enlightening. I took a lot from your replay!
That was AN AMAZING COOL-AB with Marla I wish I could see you do more training with her other birds too, although seeing vinnie and bondi was priceless!!)
I enjoyed all your and marlas videos!!!!!
Thank you. I had a sh@$%y day and your vids and replays made it better!
Lovefrom my Israeli flock and I
And again,
😍😘🤗
Thank you for all that you do!!!! You guys and marlene are making this world better. For real.
Marlene's compassion is so sweet 😭😭
She makes my eyes water!
Very cool. I watch both of these peoples channels. And love them for different reasons. At the end of the day. They care and share their knowledge about birds. And I have learnt so much from all of them.
Really enjoyed the video! Keep spreading the knowledge that birds are more than an ornament in a cage! ❤️ Here are 3 ways I keep mine engaged in everyday life:
Best Collaboration ever.....I love it more please....
Hi jamie,dave and marlene..
NAVEEN RAJ thank you! I fixed the link 💗
I have actual tears from the end of this video. I love both of your channels so much and I am happy that we are able to build such a beautiful community full of amazing humans who love, care for, and are just doing their best to improve bird lives❤️ they are such a unique animal and so much goes into their proper care… thank you for all you do.
you all LOVE birds and it shows
wow , love love love this video. My 2 most favourite parrot youtubers , thanks so much.
Love hearing this sort of thing. 💜
Marlene, I love your logo and your quality love and care of birds. Great example of what to do. Thank you!
I hear gangsta Vinny in the background! 🐦😍
I was laughing!!! The Vin’s voice is so Gangster! Love Vinny❤️
Marlene stop you're making me cry too omggggggg
I think this is an important message that I try spreading to everyone that I interact with.
Thank you so much for this.
this is why i love your channel
I love this video!!!! Cages are not prisons!!! My bird (a cockatiel) dictates what he wants. If he wants out, he will do lots of contact calls and run round the bottom of his cage. I take him out until he tells me he wants back in.
I follow both your channels, and I looove that you got together for this! ❤️❤️
Wait, Vinny is the bird? I thought Vinny was Marlene’s boyfriend’s name... this changes everything!
Vinny in the background LOL 💚
Great video, essential info !
Haha
We are short!!! Dave is 6'2". Hahaha.
This was so sweet, thank you! ❤️
No way!! My two favorite bird ladies on UA-cam!!
Awsome vid as usual!! I wish good health to your birds and family!!💙💜💚🧡❤
Amazing 2 out of my 3 favourite bird channels. But I can't imagine a collab with Gotcha and his mum.
