- Sure, Apple's new iPhone 15 features have improved designs and cameras, but the tech company’s switch from the Lightning to USB-C port is the biggest iPhone news to affect consumers in years. All of its new models, including the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, have USB-C ports.
WSJ’s Joanna Stern breaks down everything you need to know about the update, including why Apple did this in the first place.

The world has gone mad, the biggest selling point has become a USB connection. Insanity.
Better than the tech press fawning over colours.
First of all, this is better for the environment and helps consumers save money as USB C is universal rather than Apple's proprietary lightning connector which costs more because Apple charges a fee to accessory makers. Secondly, USB C has 20x faster data transfer speeds and capable of up to 150 watt fast charging speeds rather than the slow 23 watt fast charge of iPhone on lightning connector
@@americanfreedomandworldpea6912 hate to break it to you but other manufacturers have been using usb c for decades
USB C wasn’t their biggest selling point
@@americanfreedomandworldpea6912what he means is, when other companies already innovating folding screen, under display camera, etc Apple just comes now with USB-C and becomes major selling point, which is kinda disappointing when you think about it
This is definitely not the Apple I used to know. Apple was a brand which represented innovation and elegance. Now the most impressive innovation of their new product is starting to use a port which had already been wildly used around the world for 7 years.
At the end of the day, Apple have to comply with the strict regulation to use type C, if they wont, they will lose the huge european market..
It's not an innovation, it's just the biggest news story because they've been holding onto lightning for so long and there is a perception that not only did Apple not want to change but that they are annoyed about it. Smart phones aren't about innovation anymore, it's a mature product. The iPhone 15 is an advancement on the previous one with compelling new features. If that's not good enough for you then you'll just have to deal with it.
iPhone is a commodity now, not the latest innovation device. Sure features like Apple pay, sos is nice, but other competitors have it too.
No, world wide maybe 4 years. It maybe 6 years for real us. So how comes you say 7 years?
I've never seen Apple as an innovative company. They usually just do everything better. Touch screens were in place before the iPhone, app stores were on Nokia and Blackberry devices, smart watches weren't invented by Apple, etc. I have a Mac, an iPhone, AirPods, a Macbook, an Apple Watch, because they do it better, not because they're at the cutting edge.
Kudos to Alex for helping us getting rid of lightning. As a frequent international traveler, I hate just to bring another cable that might get lost easily 😢
Apple: “We have an exciting new change for the iPhone”
Consumers (excitedly): “Cool! What is it??”
Apple: “Introducing USB-C”
Consumers: “…isn’t that what I’ve been using for all my devices for the last 5 years?”
Apple: “Yes, but our cables are braided”
Consumers: “All of my USB-C cables are already braided”
Apple: “Yes, but ours will cost 4x more”
Consumers: “Sold!” 😂
*USB 3.00000
Most people I know only have 1-2 things that use usb-C so i still don’t get the hype.
I was so surprised that it's only USB 3, because USB 4 with Thunderbolt came out years ago. And apple helped to actually develop Thunderbolt with Intel. So why wouldn't they include it in iPhone? Makes no sense.
I wonder if they'll include it in next year's iPhone or if they just don't want to upgrade that part, similar how they still don't have a 100 megapixel camera that other phones have had for about 10 years now.
Noooo! Just a USB 3.0 USB c!
@@REXae86at this point. Ive made a point of only buying devices with USB c which now include: food scale, food thermometer, mixer/frother, reading light, phone, earbuds, air blower, mouse, headset, game controllers and consoles and VR headset. All chargeable with one of three cables I use around the house.
So if you get iPhone 15 Pro model and buy a $130 cable, you can get the same transfer speed other phones had since Samsung Galaxy S8. That really is a win for Apple.
Lol they locked their speeds behind an expensive cable, they had to make their money for the loss of switching to a new port. They are gonna be giving away free iPhone 14s and under to keep selling the overstock of lightning cables I bet 😆
You can just use any usb 3 cable for that which cost like 5 bucks
😂😂man lighting just bad in everyway
"Blame" that guy? What? THANK him. USB C is vastly superior to Apple's idiotic dinosaur lightning connector. It's slower in data transfer and power transfer. USB C charges faster and transfers data faster if you're moving files between your phone and a computer.
And they didn’t even give the base 15 phones USB 3.0, they’re at 2.0, like from 2016😂😂
@@lacosta0892 Actually USB 3 is from 2008 and USB 2 is from 2000. That's what they're selling you. Antique technology from 23 years ago. It already existed a long time before the USB C connector existed
So Apple is PRETENDING that they're selling you something new because they're using the newer USB C connector. However, they're really selling you an old USB 3 transfer speed technology from 2008 (for the iPhone Pro), and an even older USB 2 transfer technology from 2000 for the regular iPhone. It's ridiculous
@@lacosta0892in fairness, who uses cables for iPhone data transfer anymore?
@@marioluigi9599you are right I fell into a rabbit hole for about 2 hours searching about usb type-c and all that stuff
@@TheDoomer666 yeah. It's not that complicated. The original USB 1 and 2 have four wires - a positive and ground pair for power. And a positive and negative pair for data.
...whereas USB 3 has 9 wires, because it has more data lanes.
So since a regular old USB cable only has 4 wires, it won't be able to give you the connection speed for USB 3, which needs 5 more wires. That's why you need the right cable with enough wires inside for the iPhone 15 Pro. Also, the connector needs to be type C for the iPhone, which is important to check because USB 3 also exists as the old USB A and B connectors.
As for USB 4 or Thunderbolt, it actually needs 12 wires, so you have to make sure the cable has that. However, it only exists as connector type C, so there isn't a danger of using the wrong connector.
This man is a hero of the environment and consumers! I've been waiting for Apple to switch since the 2015s as everyone else did. Don't expect for-profit companies to do the right thing, they'll always choose the dollar even if they make billions.
It actually at first will make it worse….
They were forced to do it by the EU, that's why lol
@@tesseygoThe "man" is presumably the Maltese Labour MP - so yes, the EU. You sounded like you were adding to the conversation, but you appeared just to say the same thing in a different way, which is confusing.
Not all Android devices were USB C in 2015. I had a Nexus 6P and Apple started there MacBook 12” with USB C. Now to that point PC manufacturers have time to put USB C on their laptops. Apple is already there. Every laptop manufacturer has a different charger (of course some use USB C already 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽) what about all that ewaste?
I am all in on USB C, but lightning wasn’t a one off that Apple changed every year. It’s been 11 years of the same cable all of the devices that use lightning were ubiquitous in their port while other companies were using micro usb and other types of ports.
There are still consumer devices with micro usb and non USB charging ports. I wish we could send in our devices and get them converted to USB C.
@@tr144apple wasn't the first to use type port it was among the first but at 2015 we already had type C phones

Wow it feels like just yesterday that Samsung started using usb c and now so is Apple…. Oh wait that was 7 years ago
Leave it to apple to make a royalty free usb3 into something that needs a special cable for the actual usb3 speeds
Yeah but that's not apple's fault. USB C itself comes in different varieties anyway with different cables. Apple only gave you the cheapest one they had for free in the box
And they're not selling any USB 3 cables either. So gullible Apple sheep are going to think they're going to need the Thunderbolt cables that Apple is selling for about $80 if they want the full speeds. That's the way apple is making money off it now.
...but if course you can just buy any old USB C 3 cable off amazon and it'll give you the full speeds.
Loved how they spun a legal requirement into a feature.
Thanks EU & Alex for the USB C!
The 'murderer' that we all want.
Thank you, EU for USB C!
Just remember the iPhone 15 only has USB 2 transfer speeds over that "amazing" USB C connector, so it's worthless. USB 2 came out in 2000 LOOOOL
The current USB version is USB 4. And also; the iPhone Pro doesn't even have fast charging over the new USB PD (USB power delivery) technology, which has also been put for years. Instead just use basic luke 10W charging or something
On certain technology from Apple, like the mandated conversion to USB-C charging ports which they fought tooth-and-nail, they are a band of proprietary weasels. If they had their way, we'd still be using lighting ports, which are, according to this news flash, 20x slower than USB-C.
The new USB C port iPhones don’t transfer data any faster than Lightning 3.0. It’s literally just a different hole
@@VibesInMotion you mean USB 3.0 and the iPhone 15 Pro is actually the only one that supports USB 3.0. The base model still only supports USB 2.0 because they put the A16 chip in it instead of the new A17 chip. So your statement is slightly wrong. iPhones don't transfer data faster than USB 2.0, a 20 something year old standard at this point.
Apple should've never made lighting in the first place and just waited 2 years for USB C. They're complaining about e-waste now but they're the ones who created the e-waste and this whole problem to begin with!
So the only change in iPhone 15 is USB C.. Wow, why was there an event for this announcement.
Cos you can also now get roadside assistance when you have no signal using satellites. The old phones could only get like emergency rescue by satellite.
At least the Pro finally has a proper telephoto lens. I'm so tired of seeing blurry zoomed in images from my parents on Facebook.
@@HikerHansen So why don't you just buy them a proper phone for a third of the price. You can get much more zoom on other phones than the 5x zoom on overpriced trashy iPhone
@@HikerHansen Like whyyyy are you such an iSheep? You do realise don't you, that this iPhone Pro has only USB 3 which came out in 2008 and the regular iPhone has only USB 2 which came out in 2000. That's 23 year old technology and you're still buying it like amazingly new. It's really old.
It is not the biggest upgrade. Just the most tangible thing for most people and low hanging fruit for content. If USB C weren't such an easy target, the focus would be the upgrade from 12mp (same resolution for too long) to 48mp sensor with depth info for refocusing.
So Apple basically said, “You want us to go full USB-C? Ok, but if you want the fastest transfer speeds, you need to buy a sPeciAL USB-C cable that we will sell separately!”
Thunderbolt cable is different.
To be fair, those who would need the cable probably already have one for other devices, and the average iPhone user isn’t going to need one anyways
That turn out not to be the case. iPhone 15 pro support plain old usb c 3.0
@@MA-sp9dl IPhone 15 doesn't support Thunderbolt speeds anyway. So you don't need to spend that much on buying it.
To take advantage of the higher transfer speeds of iPhone 15, you just need a USB 3 cable.
...which apples doesn't even sell. So buy it from someone else. The EU has forced Apple to make it compatible with any USB cable and not just the ones Apple are selling.
@@marioluigi9599that has nothing to do with EU. USB is a standard. Lightning is not. Just like Bluetooth and WiFi. You don’t need to buy AirPods to get the best of Bluetooth out of your iPhone.

The reason for the USB C is because of the new law pass by the EU
Excellent explanatory video. Thank you!
Apple knows the USBC port is much better than the their proprietary lightning port but just refused to adopt it on iPhone until the EU forced them to do so. Greedy 🍏 I like the man’s action.
Apple makes him do that. It's all staged.

Nobody is talking about how unless you buy the pro model, you actually get a downgraded USB c delivering usb2.0 speeds. They are only delivering standard 40gbps in the pro models, while phones 1/3 the price have had those speeds for half a decade they are withholding a cheap component to force the upgrade. That's shady business.

The irony of forcing Apple to move to usb-c when Apple is famous for removing features ahead of when most people are ready to move on (cd drives, headphone jack, etc)

In 2012 we all survived the switch from 30pin to Lightning and I could be wrong here, but I think the world will survive this transition as well. A solution for those who a devastated by this news and its e-waste impact, I can suggest a very cost effective and waste friendly solution. Don't upgrade your phone ;)
Yep, and this time we are just moving to widely adopted standard anyways. So it's not like from 30-pin connector to Lightning connector which is both proprietary anyways. Most likely people that have other USB-C devices will simply reuse the same cable to their new iPhone. Even later iPhone chargers are already USB-C anyways.
there’s always going to be some people who always love to buy the newest Apple iPhone.
However we are in a recession, so
I think that they might have some issues with some people buying it right away this time around.

I still remember Phil's shtick about "courage" and a tweet saying that if they actually wanted to show courage they would've put a pair of airpods in the package with the iPhones.
Apple has become one of many companies that's really only exciting for its investors.
Some phone manufacturer also placed a literal wireless charger free of charge in the box. Lying and pretending is one thing, but saying it's an act of courage is crazy. Wireless headphones still can't beat wired headphones in terms of sound quality until now.
This is the best news for the smartphone industry. Finally, all commonly used devices at home (smartphones, tablets, Laptops and related devices) will use one universal port standard. Thank you EU for saving the EU and the rest of the world.

So we have new chargers usb now ? Will it work with an 14plus ?
Magsafe - as all other wireless chargers - lose 60% of the power that is fed into it. That can be ok if you use power from a wall socket and your charging speed is no more that 10 - 15 W; but if you want increase the charging speed, or you want to charge the phone with a power bank, then the cable is mandatory.
This said, it is highly unlikely that we will ever see a phone without a wired connection - because of the laws of physics, principally...
While usb c is great now, there will be a time when there’s something better and companies will be stuck using old tech until government’s say it’s ok and catch up.

Apple is the only company delivering premium phone and managing to down-spec the USB-C. 480mbit USB2 speed on a 959€ iPhone15. Even the pro is specced-down. It does offer 10gbit speed, but not full USB-C 3.1 or better, for supoort of DP or mobile HDMI. Apple tried to release a portless iphone but that would have been in breach of the EU usb-c requirement and they were told by the EU that they would nor be able to be sold in the EU due to non compliance
That helps in making USB-C more prevalent. Other gadget companies sometimes still make new gadgets with Micro USB, maybe they'll also finally switch to USB-C.

The lightning cables aren’t really trash. If you have a usb c to lightning cable you can just purchase a lightning to usb c adapter for about a dollar and you now have a usb c cable. No need to get rid of all your cables after all.

Although I agree with points from both sides (Apple and the EU) - I think the right call is to move towards USB-C on iPhones. People can recycle their old cords if they get a 15. In a few years, hopefully we don’t have to carry around 3 different types of charger cords in our cars for all of our friends, everyone will need the same port.
