    This is a breakup where the couple remembers the relationship differently. The guy feels even though things weren't great between them ("he was lonely in her company") it wasn't so bad that they couldn't remain friends after the breakup. He has no clue of the emotional damage he did to her. So he doesn't understand why she doesn't want to have to anything to do with him.
    But she remembers "all the times you screwed me over but had me believing it was always something I had done. " So she remembers the relationship as toxic to her, especially since in her version it seems he never took responsibility for the things he did to hurt her. So she still has some resentment and just wants to move on with him completely out of her life.

    Defintiely check out the lyrics. Love the visuals that so well match the lyrics. He treats her like he did her a favor being with her, even though he knew he was above that. And when they part, to his relief, until she totally ghosts him, and makes him feel like he's not even there. Notice how he comes out "naked" and "open," and then fades into the background (by her disregard), while she was already faded into the background (by his narcissism) and comes into focus in expressing her independence. Hella song! Nice reaction, as usual!

    And the video fits with the story as well. He gets covered up by the paint until he blends into the background, because he feels invisible. But then we see she is also covered with paint, since she felt invisible all during their relationship. At the end of the song the paint comes off of her, because she's leaving him behind so she can be whole again.

    • @johnplaysgames3120

      I actually came down to comment the same thing. So many people in these comments take it as "he was an a-hole and she finally reclaimed her life!" but I read the song as two sides of the same story. Other than a situation where one person is an outright douche (cheater, liar, manipulator, self-centered, whatever) most breakups are two people slowly pushing each other away. If you ask someone who's broken up, they'll pretty much always say the other person was the problem but the truth is that it was just a bad fit (or issues piled up and got out of control rather than dealt with in time) and either no one is to blame or both are to blame.
      Most love songs strive to hit universal chords so that the greatest number of people can identify rather than being super specific to the person singing the song. This breakup duet is no different. It's a universal situation that both people feel they tried their best but the other person was wrong and those two sides of the story tell the full story.

    This song is the 2 perspectives of why they broke up but she says something that has always sealed the full reason for me. He keeps talking about how they just didn't work but hoped they could still be friends while she was so bitter that she just cut off all ties. But when she starts singing, the last thing she says is that he couldn't let it go and caught him being hung up on somebody that he used to know. As in he still had feelings for someone else from his past the whole time they were together, which is what ruined them and why she was so pissed to be 2nd best... to somebody that he used to know.

Listen to him as he says oh you hurt me but I don't need you etc etc. He told her when they broke up shes was just somebody that he used to know. She's reminding him of that. Gotye makes clear each time he says some emotional thing he insults it with oh you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough then says he was glad it was over lol no he isn't. She makes clear this is how their relationship was and she always had to read into what he says cause you know the whole typical Narcisististc blaming someone else

    Well the song is hauntingly beautiful so you closed your eyes, but this was the time to watch. The video finally means something. In the relationship, she was always "in the background", you know made to feel unimportant while he was alive. So he starts off free of paint. After the breakup, now he is in that position, feeling in the background, unimportabt, discarded, and she loses the background paint to signify now she feels alive, restored, and important. Brilliant video. Sad, universal song for all the feelings you have when dumped, no matter the reason, it hurts.

    Little more backdrop here. His father is a bit of a painter and actually created the mosaic that they used in the video. Its also a good metaphor for being emotionally broken at the end of a relationship. Feelings are fractured like the painting, love, hate, sadness, regret, happiness, loneliness. He didn't end the relationship, she did, but because he felt lonely in the relationship it was a relief when it was over. She felt like she was walking on eggshells all the time and also felt like he was still hung up on a past relationship...which definitely happens to some that get into a new relationship before piecing themselves together and being ALL There for a new relationship.

    I like the dynamics here. Notice how they swap background places and in the context of the song. He's out there and she's in the background at first. Like in a pub. They get together.... He ends up being rubbish in the relationship, is then thrown into the background after they split but, tries to salvage some lost dignity by sharing some of the blame. Brilliant!

    I feel the painting represents that he was feeling whole prior to letting his heart out. The painting is a representation of the broken relationship. The more he sings the more he is brought back into his brokenness. As she starts to sing, she was still in that hurt and broken mess which is why she had to cut him off, her way of dealing with it. but she sees he is still the same broken person as he sings and confronts him to no avail. Once she realizes things have not changed, she removes herself emotionally.

  • @NickSquirt

    My take: He breaks up with her and she is kind of taken aback by it, so in order to deal with the break up and not linger in and out of feelings for him she completely "cuts him off" and removes him from her life. She may still have feelings, but obviously its not what he wants and this is the way she decides to deal with the pain of what could come if she lets him back in her life. Now on his end, he is, at first, happy with his decision but kind of wants to remain friends. So when she cuts him out of her life completely, he becomes broken. Now I use the word "broken" because I feel that this is the purpose of the video. He starts off clean and naked, aka: happy with his decision. Bu then becomes broken and confused and hurt (the paint job that appears on his body). Her on the other hand, is already upset and confused and "broken" because she starts off the song that way (the paint job on her body). But then as she gets everything off her chest that was wrong by him, she becomes relieved and content (clean naked body). This is just my take, but obviously its up to interpretation :) sick song though

If you ask anybody who's been through a breakup, most will say that they tried really hard to make it work but the other person was the problem. Both people have their own perspective on what went wrong and neither is necessarily fully right or wrong. Most often, barring one of the people being an actual douche (cheater, liar, manipulator, self-centered, whatever), breakups are the result of two people slowly pushing each other away.

    • @GrahamMilkdrop
      @GrahamMilkdrop 3 роки тому +5

      @@thegoodthings2878 Well that is possible but I always had it the other way around. Ghosting is usually a tactic used by people with narcissistic personality traits to punish people who don't do what they want. He was expecting to just go back to seeing her around and treating her like a friend. Sure he blamed her for things but we don't know if she actually was difficult to be with and the pain he is feeling now is entirely her fault. A clue as to their relationship dynamic is when he says that the relationship made him feel sad but he couldn't give it up and that he felt alone in her company which is something that people experience when trying to build a relationship with psychopaths because the psychopaths are unable to connect other than superficially. One of the reasons that they ghost people is to limit the amount of exposure that people who have got to know them have with their other acquaintances. It means they can control the narrative without contradiction.
      Anyway... to anyone reading this... DON'T GHOST PEOPLE! It really sucks!

    • @mortisrat
      @mortisrat 3 роки тому +16

      They were together, but he wasn't really that keen on her and was 'glad it was over' yet he's all butthurt because she doesn't want to be in contact anymore, because he's a manipulator who used to play with her emotions by 'screwing her over' and making her 'believe it was because of something she'd done'. This song was designed to make you feel sorry for him and then present the other side so that you realise you'd been siding with the a-hole due to one sided info.

    • @Sin_Alder
      @Sin_Alder 3 роки тому +5

      I had a very close friend for about 12 years who was like that, but finally cut them off and ghosted them about 2 years ago, because it had gotten really bad for the last four to five years of the friendship, and then shortly after they screwed me over really badly for personal gain (essentially fraudulently acquired about $10,000, and tried to make me a scapegoat, then tried to act like they were the victim) I found out that the early years of our friendship, the reason why I had bothered to keep trying, was built on lies and manipulation too.
      Now, as someone who's had experience ghosting someone in a very similar relationship to the one in the video, I wouldn't say that ghosting people is often a good way to break off a relationship of any sort, but there are some people that are so deeply manipulative and hate to lose control so much that there really isn't any other option that accounts for your own well being.
      It's true that ghosting can be traumatic for everyone involved, but sometimes there's a point in an unhealthy relationship when you just say "enough is enough", and break it off without giving the other party the opportunity to try to pull you back in.

    • @GrahamMilkdrop
      @GrahamMilkdrop 3 роки тому +2

      @@mortisrat It's weird that people think that 'going no contact' and 'ghosting' are the same thing. It is also weird that people think that objecting to being ghosted is manipulative! I think that the obsession with self-empowerment has normalised behaviour that erodes the development of strong communities.

    • @GrahamMilkdrop
      @GrahamMilkdrop 3 роки тому +3

      @@Sin_Alder Absolutely right! Going 'no contact' is a tool that should be in everyone's arsenal to be used in extreme situations. It shouldn't be the go-to response to things just not working out or having received some criticism! Every person that you ghost is a branch of potential that you are killing for all time. If the branch is truly poisonous then yep... it's gotta go... but for most people... a 'time-out' is all that is necessary.

    "What happened?" They broke up, and she acted like he was dangerous or something, sending her friends to get her stuff and changing her phone number. Yeah, the relationship had soured. She wasn't wrong when she said how he was kind of a dick, blaming her for everything. But then to act like that? Yeah... Someone I used to know. I'm not even going to acknowledge we were ever a thing.

    • @Real_LiamOBryan
      @Real_LiamOBryan 3 роки тому +3

      I didn't get the sense that she was acting like he was dangerous. To me, it was more like a complete break. No seeing each other. No being friends, even though she said that. The end. I think that's why she had her friends collect her things, so she could pretend he didn't exist.
      I think this is the crucial part of the song to understand, it tells the whole message:
      "Well you said that we would still be friends,
      But I'll admit that I was glad it was over
      .
      But you didn't have to cut me off
      .
      Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
      .
      And I don't even need your love
      ,
      But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
      .
      No, you didn't have to stoop so low
      ,
      Have your friends collect your records and then change your number."

    A lot of people think of Gotye as a one hit wonder. But he’s not- he has a very long and very awesome catalogue of songs.
    Thing is, he’s all about being creative and different- kinda “prog pop”. He’s never actually tried to make it big, it just so happens hat one of his songs happened to catch fire. But he wasn’t going to change who he was as a musician to chase money or fame.
    Other amazing Gotye songs that I highly recommend:
    Heart’s a Mess
    Easy Way Out
    State of the Art
    Eyes Wide Open
    Thanks for Your Time
    I think of him like a modern day Peter Gabriel. He has that kind of vibe. And I love that he uses weird instruments- like the musical fence out at Winton, in the Australian desert. And his music videos are always very artistic and weird. This was probably his most “normal” song and video. A banger, to be sure, but I actually prefer other songs over this.
