For those of you who don’t understand she’s saying the working conditions were not great. It sounds like her writers team had half the resources of writers teams at a similar scale on tv. That’s bound to be an ineffective workplace.
But the working conditions really shouldn’t have an effect on your writing.. like she said herself that they were really talented and funny.. so they should be able to come up with good stuff even if it’s just with a piece of paper and pencil in a dungeon..
@@whoville1064”working conditions shouldn’t have an effect on your writing” - what? I LOVE her for admitting this. Used to eat up her content and couldn’t stand it when she was getting shit on. But admittedly didn’t like the content either. What a legend for being candid
The conspiracy theorist part of me was that network exec levels could easily make an example out of her to keep new talent out (play into the assumption women or minorities aren't funny), especially if it threatens the ratings or writing pool for other projects. I used to hate Lily simply because of the few clips from her show but I understand her a bit more now.
probably because she was trying to keep her show alive even if she didn't like it bc it was a stable income for her and the whole crew. also probably bc the issues were ones she was aware of and couldn't fix due to resources/execs. she was pissed because they were right and she knew it but couldn't do anything. that's my guess.@@bq2833
Drew Gooden did a fantastic video about her show. Basically, he acknowledges that most of the shows problems weren’t her fault, but that she should have realized the constraints of network television compared to being a UA-camr. Also criticized her for not taking criticism of the show well
Drew Gooden doesn’t know half as much about late night comedy as he does about youtubers, then. Professional comics can deliver SOMETHING without a writers room because they’ve studied and trained in comedy. They work as writers before they host. They’re basically the managing writer and can practice enough judgement to not let a show collapse.

Thats why traditionally hosts have a writing background, a stand-up background, or an improv background. Conan was more hilarious during the writers strike, when he was doing almost everything unscripted, or loosely scripted.
Yup! Conan O Brien also wrote for the Simpsons and SNL before he had his own show, he is also great and doing improv and actually excels with this type of content. After seeing “Conan without borders” I’m convinced that traveling while interviewing people is his best type of content.
considering all this, lilly did an amazing job then for someone without all that background. she still carried a whole late night show for however long she did... everyone is humiliating her. i don't know how much of it can be called a set up for her to not succeed though. because she was a beginner and first person of her league to do this, it's like she kinda had a huge burden to carry and make work for her and it was all on her. for someone starting, they gave her something small, i don't think that's unfair but i also can't speak to it because idk sh!t about the industry and don't know what it's like. what if every host needs a bigger room from the jump in order to succeed. what if it's compulsory and determines the trajectory of success.

She could have realized that her style was more suited for skits and kids and also, she was making so much money on UA-cam. She got greedy and power hungry and wanted to move up in the world as she saw it. She was doing amazing on UA-cam. She’s just not funny in interviews and as a stand alone comedian. The people who are funny in that way don’t need writers. Ever watch your favorite comedians in interviews? No writing, just talking off the cuff and they’re hilarious. Those comedians may not be suited to doing great on UA-cam. Like Bill Burr. He’s one of my favorites, funny on stage and as a comedian but his UA-cam channel doesn’t do great. You have to know HOW you’re funny and stick with it. I don’t hate her or anything, I used to really love her skits, but she just isn’t funny in the talk show kinda way. There’s nothing wrong with that. She has plenty of talent, but it doesn’t translate to that type of comedy. No amount of writers could’ve fixed that. You need great timing, charisma, and other intangibles to be funny in the way she was trying to be.

@@leeartedwards again. There’s a difference between kind of funny and not funny at all. What she was describing sounds bad, terrible in fact. But that’s a quality issue not a quantity. It only takes ONE funny person to write ONE funny joke. So if she had a room full of supposedly funny writers how come there wasn’t a single funny joke. Consistently. And as for that example, that’s different from writing. One is and the other is preparing something funny with a prompt, both are extremely easy IF your funny. Actually funny. I think a lot of the issue comes from that word being thrown around too much. I could understand if most of the jokes were bad. Or if some of them fell flat. Or if it felt rushed or whatever. But all of that is different than having a bunch of people (no matter how many) turn in jokes that are ALL terrible. It’s impossible to have multiple “writers” together (no matter how many more people they may need ideally” and not come out with a single, just one, funny thing.
Dave Chapelle has one writer for jokes whenever he steps on stage. Him. He is him. If you're a comedian and you're saying you're not funny because your writing team is smaller than other non-funny people, then it's safe to say you're not a comedian
Making one special per year and making five episodes per week is two entirely different things and can't be compared. Do you think Dave wrote Chappelle's show on his own?
@kisikisikisi he had other writers for Chapelle show. She had writers for everything, including her UA-cam channel work. Objectively, she's not funny and never has been. For the sake of your feelings, did I have to point out her audience was primarily fans of her UA-cam channel and not the general public? Do I have to point out that mentioning her race and shitting on white men does not a successful program make?
When she was confronted about the show being bad in the past, I remember her getting very defensive and claiming people didn’t like it because they’re discriminating against her race, sexuality, and gender. She said some pretty nasty things about people critiquing her. Why is she now willing to admit she knew it was bad? Is she going to apologize for her previous comments?
@@Pidatha It does but if people actually watched the video and listened to her explain the process and her own views leading up to some of the responses you would understand that truly was the case. There was no way she could have been able to walk away not feeling some type of way about a failed show. Add on some critical and rude comments and of course she would snap. Cause even though the show may have flopped that was a test of a mettle for her, and some could argue she passed(mettle-wise). But she didn't pass the aftermath, she couldn’t handle the comments which shitted on her unseen efforts, and resolve, let's not forget she was kinda set up to fail. Of course it felt personal. Of course she personally felt attacked. Lilly acknowledged that some channels critiquing her were spot on BUT there were some who were straight up rude and not at all understanding. So why would they deserve an apology? You can't hold Lilly to one standard and then not hold the rude ass Channels to the same standard. Let's not pretend people weren't rude af to her and that channels dragging her didn't exist.

Going to call bulshit on that. People should go watch the first 8 minutes of the full video. This clip comes up along with context that’s edited out of the short. She did not just have half the writers. She had half the writers, pumping out THREE episodes a day. Other late night shows record one per weekday, and they do it day of. Her schedule was to pre record all 90 episodes back to back, which also implies she can’t be commenting on daily happenings the way late night shows usually do.
The only reason for all this was to accommodate her own already packed schedule. Her rep negotiated this pace, hoping Lilly could just show up & perform instead of WORKING on her own show at all. She should have been honest about not having time when NBC approached but it’s all about ego. The money & opportunity was too good to pass up I guess…

Ok. Less people means less resources, I get that. But those fewer people can still be funny and good at what they do, no? Less people would explain inconsistency in quality to fill out the airtime, but not always missing the mark. If you or your people are good at their format it has to hit sometimes, right? To me, the honest impression is that: 1. UA-cam Humor does not really translate on TV, which is fine. 2. The established format of the rigid Night Talk Show was just not a good fit for her or any female UA-camr, as pointed out by people like Brittany Broski. 3. People trying to write for you and dilute your appeal in the process, by just trying to imitate something you might say, is always bad. Honestly it is a tale as old as time by now, as to why a lot of UA-camrs ditched trying to do TV and stuff: They dont want YOU as a person, they want your AVATAR to bring in a new audience, but you are forced to still project their same old content/format. Which is a recipe for disaster, because UA-cam Personalities get famous FOR their personality, it is in the name. If they limit your selfexpression which got you so far in the first place you will tank, because your fans recognize it is not really you and the rest of the audience does not know what to make of you.
If 1 person has to do the work of 2 people, it's always gonna be worse. Everything has to be less good, in order for it to all be done at the end of the day.
@@chiedzawith2ds While I somewhat agree, imo there is more to it. The disconnect between UA-camrs and TV people, be it writers, hosts etc. Something is not clicking, mainly the need for structure and strict monitoring that takes away what makes a UA-camr special in the first place. TV shows have a different, broader audience - so the nisché that got you famous on UA-cam is not sufficient enough to create mass-appealing content. And thats where writers start to think "Well, what COULD a/this UA-camr say, but also fit our show?" and it is downhill from there. You cant make the UA-camr a blank slate Avatar for the writers' talent to shine through, cuz why cast a UA-camr in the first place then? But you also cant make the UA-camr do all the work by themselves, because of the tight time schedule. So the in between solution always comes off as hollow and not genuine. So to me, them not being able to make her funny, is more about the format and disconnect, than people - otherwise something would have been good or promising...although understaffing obviously did not help
The producers half-assed the show. The writers were underpaid and overworked. Lily was very new to the talk show business. It's a miracle that the show went on as long as it did. It's true you can be funny with few people in the writing room, but what if those few people were under so much stress like she tells in the video? You cannot be comedic when you're stressed.
Sounds like damage control to me. It's not just her show that was unfunny. She did it for a paycheck because she wasn't bothered about making UA-cam content at the time. Pitching a late night comedy show for a zoomer audience when the format was dieing for 5 years prior was just a horrible business decision by management anyway
she mentioned in the full video, if you watch it, that the contract they had was for 96 episodes in 3 months. she went into it fully intending to make youtube videos at the same time, but soon realised that wasn't possible. Also, of course she did it for the paycheck. Most of us work for a paycheck. If it wasn't for that I wouldn't even bother getting out of bed most days
But she already had a paycheck for the work she was doing and a decent paycheck at that.

How can someone be funnt on an insane deadline?
This is a short clip. Full context is they had to write a lot of material in a short time which is why the quality degraded.
However, she let greed win and chased a bigger paycheck for what she deemed as less work, and it has rightfully ruined her reputation, which granted not hard but still.
No matter how you slice it she was well off and didn't need more money yet she chased it anyway.
@@Not_An_EV " as less work"? 96 episodes in 3 months was gonna be less work? i really suggest you watch the full episode. she seems like a hardworking person and it seemed more about the challenge of doing something new. it's really worthy of respect. also, i don't think she should regret it because it failed, as she herself put it in the full video, it accomplished other things. also, there's nothing wrong with chasing more money. again, we all do it. quitting a job to go to a better paying one is incredibly common, and it's called career growth.
it was a good opportunity n tbh i don’t think her reputations been ruined. the jokes there were just cringier versions of what she was already doing on youtube, she was just given a different platform. though i can understand your point about greed (and somewhat agree with it, there’s an inherent greediness to these sorts of things)i think she was also trying to cement herself into a different industry. multiple things can exist at once !!
Exactly. She got the bag. She got the “fame” (just not the way she wanted), she couldn’t lead the show in a good direction so didn’t get more resources. All while she got paid the most out of anyone on the show and walked away with the bank. Now she gets to sit here and take zero responsibility and claim she herself is a victim. Give me a break. If that’s a victim, sign me up.
Don't compromise your integrity if you don't believe in it you don't have do it
This segment was also written for her.
Not the comments not understanding what shes distinctly understanding. Doesnt matter if you didnt like her original content either. The show wasnt the same as when she was writing her own stuff either.😊
Did this sound good in your head before you typed it out? If so, it should've stayed there.
that’s not an excuse, if Smosh could write funny videos back when it was just the 2 of them then her “FUNNY” writers could also work with what they have as well, she says they were really funny so how are they writing crap jokes?

@@r1r1_1.he’s not really yapping tho
@@zenthous9568 well yeah but some people are just ignoring the fact that she doesn't even have a proper comedic background or smth
@@r1r1_1. that doesn’t really justify anything. If you don’t have a comedic background why try to make a comedic show, and anyway this comment was about the writers
@@zenthous9568 probably cause she thought the show would go alright and won't be as bad as it is rn and she probably doesn't have funny writers either idk why she said that cause if they were the jokes would've been funny too I don't think she had the proper resources for this too she just started it cause she was getting famous cause of her relatable youtube videos and thought the show can't go that wrong but here we r now
I don’t hate her, but girl this is 1000% damage control
My thoughts as well
Kudos to y'all to show the whole clip rather than making it look like she was talking shit about her writers.
she so beautiful ⭐️
Agreed, but she's not funny at all. She should just stop comedy and post her skin care routine.
All it should take is one good writer to deliver something that isn’t completely awful. This is nonsense
You saw that with the earlier writers' strike. Some shows continued to be funny without writers and some weren't (although the Daily Show relied heavily on Brit John Oliver and Canadians Samantha Bee and Jason Jones).
That’s literally what i just said. It should only take ONE funny person to make at least ONE funny joke. Let alone if everybody isn’t here was “funny”. Everybody throws that word around nowadays, everybody thinks they’re funny. But in reality people are just easy to entertain and the skill ceiling is lower if you’re an follower and an idiot. It makes being actually funny both more rewarding, and more annoying perceptively. 🤦🏽♂️
She is just not funny.... that's just it
Ik this isn’t true cause she was making content exactly like her show on her UA-cam you can get away with being unfunny on UA-cam not on television
I never watched the show, but whenever I saw clips from it, I always thought “this doesn’t seem like the Lilly Singh I grew up watching”. Nice to see Lilly felt the same way! 😂
She knew and said nothing/did nothing about it, that’s truly on her.
So if the writers are good then it's just lily
Imagine you are someone who actually enjoyed that show, how dumb you must feel after hearing this
Tbh just wish she had been honest about this at the time or had just “I have an NDA so I can’t talk” and I feel like people would have understood, instead she just put out less than good responses to the criticism instead of just being honest. A lot of people wanted her show to do well and if she had just said “well the studio cut my funds” people would have understood.
she wanted it to be successful, not promoting it or even accepting criticism can mean it doesn't do as well. it sucks, but i don't blame her for playing the game while it was airing. everyone talks themselves up in their cvs, right?
@@bumblerbree yeah but I’m not talking about commercials, I’m talking about the UA-cam videos she posted where directly responded to the criticism on her personal UA-cam account
It's easy for her to say this now, a decade later, after the huge amount of backlash but let's be real she never bounced back because she never actually wanted to change :/
Excuses goes brrrr
me when i try to patch up my flaws by putting people under the bus but also trying to be as nice as possible so there's really no solution found
Thats the excuse for the show, but what about her own personal UA-cam channel?
What about her channel? In it's prime it was one of the hugest on the UA-cam platform. She was doing well with her own stuff when it was her priority years ago.
@@annamay731it was more about timing than anything. She started in 2010 when the platform was still in its infant stages and was able to capitalize on it. Good for her. But there's a reason her prime time ended around 2014.
She's coming back on UA-cam and im so glad! Miss her skits with Manjeet 😂
She has the communication skill of Eylon Levy. 😂
Bruh boss she's on the apologies arc eh
She's a Legend in Her Own Mind...🤔🤦♂️
Hold on so the writers are funny but since there were not a lot of them, it’s not funny? I don’t get it. I mean the more the merrier and more people can check other people ideas and work but how can they be funny but the idea not be funny?
Um, that is not very relatable: I could not make a 5 minut stand up set on late night funny because only 10 people wrote for me...
Take responsibility and say you fail
Your show, your name, your choices. Still choose to do it, you bear the burden of its mark
Can someone explain to me how having a smaller room makes talented writers become talentless?
they have to shoot 3 episodes a day, everyday. Which leads to burning out and tired. There's a full interview of her if you wanna understand it more
How is that hard to understand? You can be a very talented artist, but when you have to pump out three paintings everyday, they’re bound to suck eventually
Take Colbert's show. He has writers on staff that get maybe one joke in per show on average, meaning that writer's stuff was good enough to get him in the door, but, for the first year or so, gets minimal screen time. These freshman writers are good, but are barely used more than senior writers to bounce their jokes off of for Colbert to use. They get seasoned or sacked over time.
You have half the writers? You gotta hope they're all senior quality with very few gaps.
@@books2438have you ever heard her show it sounds like she doesn’t even have writers tbh. For something to drop in quality it has to have quality to begin with
@@aidanh7527don't even bother. I'm now convinced that this "books" account is either a direct relative or Lily's burner account.
So happy seeing Lilly featured on Anthony's channel 😊
Why
@@ElariaFlori why not?
@@RaeezTheDeadPoet of all the people in the world, Lilly (even on UA-cam) hasn’t been nearly one of the funniest or most interesting. I genuinely can’t think of a single question I’d care to know. To each their own but she’s just kinda bland online
@@ElariaFloriyes. And this honestly sounds like her trying to cope with her failed show lmao wtf
@@_sch_eme_ mhm. As a diversity dyke I think I have the right to say that someone being part of a minority doesn’t inherently make someone funny, nor does the existence of it automatically make funny jokes. Most of her jokes were about her race, which were they creative could have resulted in a funny niche. There are a bunch of amazingly talented poc comedians, like Gabriel Iglesias, Vishnu Vaka (it might be Vish Nuvaka, I’m sorry I’m horrible with names), and Learnmore Jonasi. There are so many more but these are definitely my favourites. Compared to Lilly, they write their own stuff, have good delivery, and genuinely are interesting. I get it, being underfunded sucks, but she didn’t ever deserve a talk show in the first place because she wasn’t funny under her own schedule on UA-cam. I think diversity is much needed in Hollywood and on talk shows, although they are a dying medium so perhaps in whatever sparks up to replace it. Regardless, the world does not need Lilly Singh in anything, and I don’t think anyone older than 12 would really care to see her go.
She's just making excuses and saying she knows that it was bad now to try and help her public image.
Because it wasn't even the quality of the jokes that was the main problem; it was the whole condescending, divisive *style* of comedy that she's not going to convince me that she herself didn't choose to do.
Oh she absolutely thought it would be a hit with other queer poc
Yeah people don't understand that writers/artists/actors/performers/etc can't do their best work if they're not being paid enough or the conditions aren't good. It's incredibly idealistic to believe that people in these types of careers can do well in any circumstances. Creativity comes from a healthy brain, and stress, fatigue, burnout, etc will kill that creativity. There has to be an external and internal environment where creativity can be nurtured and grown. You can't plant saplings in crappy soil and then give it a cup of water and expect it to flourish.
If you can't do with less, you dont deserve it. That's when you prove what you're about.
my god how are people just eating this up... all she does is play the blame game the writing was as good as HER youtube skits. she's trying to bash the writers without bashing the writers. how r u gonna make a successful yt career where YOU were the writer director and producer and then when u do another project u blame it for lack of resources- u of all ppl should know how to work w lack of resources. the show was just shit and she doesn't want to take any accountability
my writers were extremely good but what they wrote was not funny
Not what she meant. Use your brain and listen again to what she said.
@lucky4d725 She said she knew it wasn't funny. Use your brain listen again to what she said. Her explaining why it wasn't good doesn't erase the fact that it wasn't good.
@@lucky4d725 i literally repeated what she said. she said they were GOOOOD but the content wasnt good.
@@vixygrayve but that's *not what she meant* .
@@caitthecat noone said it "erases the fact that it wasn't good". Instead of coping what I said maybe spend more attention to what was actually being said in the video.
She’s a class act for not taking the opportunity to use her writers as a scapegoat. I feel like there are plenty of people who would fold under the same scrutiny she’s received and take the easy route of blaming subordinates, but she didn’t. She explained the working conditions and understood her writers did not have the opportunity to write to their full potential due to their network.
The self delusion on this one
Blame the writers when you're not funny, blame the ground when you fall.
Sun tzu
Wow a really good short where we are given the full context of whats being talked about.
See this would be fine except she paraded around talking about how proud of it all she was and how great it was. If you aren't proud of your content you don't need to actively try to convince people it's good
To say you had less writers is still dissing the writers...
No? She’s saying the work conditions/resources weren’t good. They’d have to do double the work if it’s half the team.
So...gaslighting your audience into thinking something that wasnt funny, was funny? For money? And now after the show she doesnt apologize just admits it with no accountability...
Did not know she was capable of coming to that conclusion
She had as many writers as the first two seasons of the Simpsons did.
She capping so hard bruh 😂
Yeah mf u reporting live from her house to give this info
This is her playing catch up she’s making excuses and idc
Absolutely. You can tell because she’s blaming multiple reasons why SHE couldn’t carry a show she asked for 😂
Also, you fine af 🫶🏼😂
I just have one question, why did u think studying yourself with cherries was a good idea?
ok and ur acting like she committed such a crims
You didn’t watch the full interview you watched one clip in the interview she also admits she didn’t know what she was doing and part of the blame lands on her
No but here’s the thing, if you watch her personal videos they aren’t really funny either so.
I like how she finally accepted that the show was garbage but still managed to bring in that element of Victimhood she loves 😂 It's truly a talent
this really shows a different side of Lilly tbh
The writers were definitely not funny. No matter how small the writer team was her jokes 99% of the time we're always terrible. That says alot
