This was the ninth kit I had ever built, and for it being a PG kit, I must say that it was the best building experience I've had. I definitely recommend this kit to anyone.
@@walridrx166 Bruh, Date is another type of Samurai. It's cool but cannot be cooler than this Astray Red. I don't know the price of PG Astray in US or EU, but you could purchase it at around USD 120 in Japan (at hobby stores), China (taobao) or Vietnam (shopee with sales off code). At that price, it's currently cheaper than Date.
28:56 holy shit it has a mekugi are you kidding me. That detail is insane For those who don’t know the mekugi is a small bamboo pin that actually holds the katana together by pure friction. It slides into the handle of the sword and into the tang to keep it locked into place. Usually they are done in sets of two on modern swords and the fact the Astray has one at all is insane attention to detail
I was honestly really surprised with even the RG's attention to detail, which although not as complex, still has the maker's stamps on the bottom of the tang. I absolutely adore bandai's dedication to making these tiny unseen details that just tie everything together
18:53 missed opportunity to add a "I can smell you" sound bite for the Exia lmfao I was apprehensive to getting a PG Astray, but you have opened me up to it, thanks for the review.
I'd love to see you build a version of the HMM Gojulas. If you think this one has a lot of runners the Gojulas has 55, some are tiny ones, and the gunner and ogre vaeiants add another 24 to the pile. So if you were to build the fully equipped Gojulas gunner with the optional guns you'd have a pile of 103 runners to deal with.
If you like the pistons and inner frame detail, you’d probably dig the PG Gundam MkII. It has a killer inner frame with tons of detail, opening hatches, springs and screws. The inner frame on the PG Zaku is also amazing, but the armor on that leaves something to be desired, as it does have some garish seam lines.
Bandai: this is a tope of the line model kit that is made to be great in every singular way pleasuring your braincells in the most electric wa- Me: Slashy slash sword.
2:09 this is actually a really cool detail because the Astrays were developed alongside/with data from the Strike Gundam, Duel, etc. just without the phase shift armor
In a way, this kit is like an old martial arts master : it only moves when needed and just how much is needed, nothing more and nothing less. You have to master it, like you master the blade. Don't get too crazy, or it'll cut you instead of your enemy. It's not flashy, but it's effective.
After watching your video, i have figured myself on posing the manual pose, and i have a solution for it, and now it stays nicely without falling forward
That taunting stand the Astray did reminds me of the pose I did with my HG Gundam Aerial. I had her stand on one foot, that leg is bent at the hip sideways, making the torso lean down to the left when that foot stands while making a turn so its head can look up. The right foot is fully bent and raised from the ground. The left hand is holding a beam saber. And the right arm is pointing a rifle upwards. And it remained on that pose for about 1 week. It's still on that pose to this day, but I laid her down in a safer spot in case she might actually fall.
They actually fixed a few of the issues you pointed out in the PG ARF Kai which gets a reprint this year. I haven't gotten mine yet, but from what i've seen and heard from it, they did a bit of tinkering with the legs to allow for more part separation in the knee armor as well as make the legs a bit sturdier. The issue of the Katana's mounted to the waist causing it to pop off also required changes, so there is another mounting point on the side of the thigh. Comes with a stand too, the Action Base 1 (mainly for the Tactical Arms), but I'll take what I can get.
i love perfect grade kits but HG is is and will always be my preferred because its just so more mod-able because their are so many bits and pieces you can swap and mix
To hold the sword better get some super clear little hair ties and go around the sword and over the back of the hand. Can’t really tell it’s there at all and lets you actually wrap the fingers around the hilt.
Painting this kit definitely assists with solving a lot of the flimsy issues with the ball joints. But for the straight build community, it’s still worth every penny.
Thank you for the heads up about parts fitting in the wrong spots. I'm looking forward to building this kit soon and I'll have to keep an eye out for that. Ive made that mistake before on other gundams.
I've notice that for me, due to cleanup, panel lining (gasp! directly on the plastic) and assembly it takes me a couple hours per section(arms, legs, torso, head,) minimum with master grades.
This isnt on topic with the video, but most people here are probably Gundam fans so I'm just gonna go for it. I built my first Gundam a while ago and I'm on the fence about buying another. The kit I built was HG Michaelis. It looks cool, but his canon arm got super loose after a few days on display, and the included stand just had no friction out of the box and fell apart. I cant display him with the arm attached, or else it just droops down, and the stand doesnt even stand, so I cant display him with the arm off. I dont know if I juat got unlucky with quality control or if it was the kit itself, or if I just messed up something while building him. Does anyone have any recomendations for kits around the same price as Michaelis that actually stays together? I want to keep building them, they're super cool, but I also want something that won't fall apart after a week.
usually by thickening the joints might help (layer em a bit with top coat/ glue, wait for em to dry, then attach them to back together). or if you dont plan to play with em and just stick with a pose, just glue it
YESSSSS!!! The was hoping you would get another PG. I want to see PG MK II and PG Banshee!!! Your reviews are amazing and there is really not a lot of good reviews of said PG kits
The side skirt isn't just the balljoint that side at least on mine is too large for the actual skirt joint, you can get it on and it'll sit and stay.. but if you look at the balljoint after you'll see that the plastic is stressed to hell. You can though just plug the sword straight into the hip with out the red extender (though if you want it on the other side you have no choice but to use the extender) The hands are annoying, in the fact they don't hold properly.. It's balance if you get the Center of gravity right is amazing.. The stickers are so so, still it's worth it just for the Straight.
The PG Astray Red Frame Kai was my first PG, still on my shelf and I was so disappointed to find that the little rubber feet grips dont come with any other PG
Fun, fast and easy build. Since the innerframe is the same as the PGS strike's gundam, there a lot of leftover parts, like rhe knife from the x105 PG strike. The Legs and waist have metal parts too
Same! I just found it for a reasonable price, tax included, free shipping for 221USD and ordered it. I had my eyes on it, since I decided to get at least one Perfect Grade. The review, even though 15 years late, came at the right moment for me. I knew I liked the looks, but now I know what to expect from it 😊
Speaking of the 09, you should give the old NG 1/100 Exia a try. Surprising how well it holds and outdoes the the MG in some aspects. I recommend getting the NG Avalanche kit tho, so you can choose to build it either as the normal Exia or Avalanche Exia.
Whoa! You just make a light turn on in my brain. I just remember that I had the old 1/60 no grade exia kit waaaaaay back in 2011 when I was living in Japan... I can't for the life of me remember what happened with it...
Noticed that wile you said don't panel line the red parts, you actually did do some. What kind of damage is caused if you do panel line the red? Would ABS be compatible with Tamiya paint?
I was tossing up between this and the MGEX Strike Freedom. I ended up with the MGEX Strike Freedom and thought I made the better purchase. Turns out that either would have made a fantastic centrepiece of my gunpla display
I’m kind of shocked at the lack of color separation, the rear of the shoulders being a prime example. All that detail should be available on one part to easily paint or panel line, to which you then cover it with the grill. Similarly the long butt grill not having a separate color is odd. This really is just like the MG or RG, all it has going for it is the scale. The Kai not being the main kit is kind of sad.
Note from the art and the kit, in the art the sword is right. I do mean that the sword is position right to use like to draw it. The kit has it position the other way, the master grade got that right and the perfect grade well got it wrong... 200 dollars btw lol. Other than that everything else is positive.
Guys I have a question, I am new to the HLJ store and 98% of the inventory seems to be on backorder. Are they restocking regulary? Is this a normal thing with a HLJ store? They have awesome prices so I am curious should I wait for them to restock :)

It's that bad. It clearly shows that the old architecture of kits back then. Weren't gonna hold up tomething that big. It has very weak hands. No articulation or gimmicks on the wings. The rubber tipped wings suck big time. While if uses a BUNCH of screws. It doesn't really hold it up. As some parts are tight, while some are loose. It's the worst pg for a reason.

This and the Strike are ideal first Perfect Grades. Simple, but detailed. Super poseable, and affordable.
I built the bandai, daban, and nillson work versions. Although the nillson is more like a giant master grade, it's still my favorite of the three
Why is it your favourite? I'm planning on buying the Tallgeese PG but not sure how good they are

the accidental falling to the floor pose is the Red Frame rejecting being a Gundam and tries to be a Kamen Rider, lol.
