Network specialist here with +25 years experience. I would recommend testing all the cables with a fluke network tester or similar. And you should actually downgrade your speed on your wifi to 40 Mhz on 5 Ghz. That will improve range and battery life on your iPhone and other devices. No need for Wifi 6E since you don’t have any neighburs nearby. Problems with Sonos can be related to spanning-tree issues. Please disable the wifi on any Sonos devices connected via cable since that will minimize spanning-tree problems.
@@beardfm Wi-Fi will go farther and will be more reliable, but much slower. I disagree on this one most of the time (what's the point of having a 5 GHz network if the speed is close to a 2,4 GHz) but you can effectively try. Depending on what is inside your walls, and the disposition of your AP's, it can change something. UniFi also have an auto-improve functionality, but the easy way is to try for 24 hours, see if you have any connexion issues).
Question, they keep telling me I’m on I believe 33mhz and anytime a tech comes out, they say they don’t want to mess with it. Not into the mhz specifics, but is that good or eh
If you haven't noticed the specs of the UDM SE and Pro, the 8 switch ports are on a shared 1Gb backplane. 1 Gb divided by those 8 ports. Consider getting another Unifi PoE switch to connect your access points if you want to get the full 1 Gb per AP uplink.
I don't think that's true. Spec I read says 16Gbps non-blocking full-duplex throughput,. I think it's hard to find a switch these days that isn't full line-speed non blocking throughput. People do complain that on some UDMs (perhaps the non-SE) have under Gb WAN throughput with all the security stuff on, but the LAN ports should all be line speed.
@@chrisnicholson4493 Sorry I need to clarify. It is wire speed if you are doing layer 2 switching. If you do layer 3 inter-VLAN switching then there is a 1Gbps limit because of the 1Gb connection of the backplane to the CPU.
Good video showing off the UDM SE. Personally I have the UDR and it's really nice. While I don't have gigabit service, it's nice having all the features that UI offeres. One suggestion I have for you is about your ethernet cables. The terminations are messy and having the pairs exposed and bent the way you have them can cause problems with the realibilty of the wire. You should reterminiate your ethernet cables to have none of the pairs exposed and a little bit of the jacket inside the rj45 end.

I definitely shared your experience in that Sonos was a bit of a nightmare with unifi. The solution was so long as one of the older (pre Era/WiFi 6) speakers was on ethernet, it would use SonosNet to speak to every other speak directly rather than via the unifi WiFi. That fixed all my issues. Our Era 100s are WiFi 6 and have been flawless even without SonosNet. Frustrating for a while but yeah, ethernet is the way to go
From what i know wifi 7 isn’t finalized yet till next year, i feel like waiting for ubiquiti to update their products is the best move as when they do release a wifi 7 access point it’ll be done right and reliably.

I have a bit more for my business but i have the 6 enterprise in wall and let me tell you man these are great, they have 4 ethernet ports at the bottom and are an access point. I also have a ton of the ai pro cameras with a unvr pro, nothing beats a Poe camera, I ditched any wireless cameras
I'd wait with WiFi 7 until there's a defined standard since the existing hardware is pre-standard. Things could change and then you may have worthless equipment. 6E does great already. I appreciate you picked the SE over the Pro. I made the mistake of going with the Pro and wish now that I had bought the SE for the faster backplane and PoE ports.
It's true, getting a router before the standard is a little cart-before-horse. And I did a ton of research for that Dream Machine SE! Was only using a fraction of its potential before, but now it's becoming even more useful!
My only recommendation for your network I didn't see below, setup a VLAN or two for your IoT devices at the very least. IoT devices are more likely to be compromised. Having them on a separate network adds a layer of security to your more critical devices, like your computers. Plus it's fun to set up.
@beardfm You create another SSID and associate it with the VLAN. And, with managed switches, you can specify which ports go to which VLAN. There are some great videos on ... UA-cam. ;)
Since you already took the plunge and went with Unifi, you would benefit from the Mini Switch that Ubiquiti offers instead of that crummy unmanaged switch behind the TV. The mini switch from Ubiquiti is only $30 so likely a comparable price for a big jump in performance and reliability.
Great video! I am thinking about running Gigabit Ethernet to my office to plug into my CalDigit dock. i'd have to run it through the attic, but probably worth it. Also on Frontier here in Tampa! currently on the 500mb plan, but might be worth upgrading to 1gb if I run a cable. only getting 250Mbps over wifi connecting over Ethernet to an eero extender. not terrible, but I basically never use the full 500Mbps I pay for because the main router is in the living room.

I'm also a nerd into networking. Was thinking for a moment about WiFi 7 APs. But actually I don't need this huge amount of network speed over WiFi as I use 10Gb/s ethernet at the machines who need a really fast connection (for e.g. to edit videos). For all other devices a WiFi connection with 300 to 700 Mb/s is really enough for me. In the end, that doesn't justify the financial effort of replacing hardware just to get the current maximum speed available. Maybe sometime in the future when the standard is more established, but not today.
Hey, just getting fed this video from the algorithm. Great video, I did a brand new Unifi install with U7-Pro APs, a UDM-SE and a USW Pro Max 24 PoE and ran cat6a ethernet to all the places I want reliable connections. That being said, I saw your camera on the outside you mentioned, but you said it's on the edge of the network... The reality is, it's not so much at the edge of the network naturally but artificially so because of your metal siding. Wifi signals absolutely hate metal siding on homes. I have aluminum on my house, and a camera that is probably physically 10ft from the AP on 2.4Ghz is getting a very low dB signal from my AP due to this. If you swap the outer siding material to vinyl for instance, this should improve the outdoor range of your indoor APs greatly. Though, in practice, adding an additional outdoors AP is more economically feasible than to change an entire siding material lol. I just wanted to put this here for others to see, because even I had never known this before and was wondering why my Wifi6 5Ghz wasn't punching through my outer walls even just standing on the outside less than 3ft from the AP on the other side of my wall.
Great video, I enjoyed the pace on it. One thing I will add is that even though 2 or 5 gig internet may seem a lot even since your AP's and other individual devices can't take full advantage of those speeds, having that larger "pipe" could still be beneficial for your setup so that you could have multiple devices across the house using up to a gig on each AP without experiencing slower internet elsewhere in your house.

So I’m using Frontier’s (my ISP) fiber to Ethernet device. That’s going Cat6 into the WAN port on my Dream Machine SE (the standalone Ethernet jack on the right side with the globe icon). Then I’m using an SFP+ to Ethernet adapter in port 10 to go to a switch that supports 10Gbps

Hey there, I am having the same issue with you at the moment with 2Gib fiber will be installed in coming weeks and I get to buy my first UDM SE. Trying to get the speed over a gib on wifi is pretty difficult with the UDM SE. Fortunately they have U7 pro now and hopefully it will fix the issue.
Have WiFi 7 router, still at only 2 gig download, they currently installing 8 ig around town. When 8 gig gets installed I’ll be getting it. Only devices I have right now is my iPhone 15 pro max on 6e and fire stick on 6e. I bought the 7 only because of the hardware inside the router and little future proof, but that’s really sidelined with new routers and new chips in years forward routers. Its worth mentioning , any internet service provider modem wifi sucks compared to aftermarket routers,Looking back, I really don’t need the wifi 7 router and with chipsets, etc coming , it might have been smarter for me to wait a year or so before getting the wifi 7. I’m very happy with my wifi 7 router but not using its potential. Worth noting , wifi 7 router like to get warm, so ventilation is a good idea with it. I won’t be upgrading my iPhone 15 pro max until I see wifi 7 come out at least as a minimum, so if next years iPhones still have 6e. It be the first year I skip it, the main think I’ll be after in the next iPhone is a minimum 7. Will be saving the money to upgrade other items around the house to get it ready for wifi 7. One thing often recommended for network security for home Automation networks is to have your computers and phones etc on different vlans or a guest network to your smarthome devices. Have you done that ? Does it work or break the functionality? Thanks
My understanding is that, if you plug in one Sonos device, it creates its own WiFi network that pulls all other Sonos devices into it, removing it from your wireless network. Could that be causing your problems? I’ve got a UDM Pro, 16 port switch, and In-Wall HDs (WiFi 5) and have never had a Sonos issue (none are plugged in, have ~10 devices.) Just something to think about.

Thanks! And Frontier (my ISP) ran the Fiber cable themselves from the exterior of the house, into the attic, and dropped it into my closet for me. If you prefer you could run an ethernet cable from where you want all the network equipment to live to the part of the house where they install, but your ISP may run the cable for you too.

Here’s a thing about wireless I know how to solve the wireless drops one change the channel your access points are on for 2.4 do only use 1 6 11 at 40 make 5ghz the default enable band steering you want the access points 6 channels apart on 2.4 on 5g do them 10 to 20 channels apart if they are wired aps disable mesh only enable mesh if the backhaul is wireless my setup for a drop free connection 11 2.4 5g 149 try using 149 or 169 if you can less range but also less interference with neighbors play with these settings I tested my network rock solid also reboot your aps monthly makes for a better connection once you have it rock solid
Great vid. You mentioned Sonos Wi-Fi connectivity, i get it , i had to switched to Ethernet cable as well. I read on a the sonos forum that all Sonos speakers MUST be connected to the same switch and not thru a smaller switch then to the main network switch. Have you experienced any delay or weirdness with sound with your sonos speaker connection? Currently wall mounting 2 era 300, your method is easier. Very curious

Misleading title. north of gig WITHIN your home, easy. I'm running a 10gig backbone (on a Mikrotik switch) between my NAS, Vmware lab nodes, and several desktops. I can get more than gigabit to outside the house, by using link aggregation and multiple ISP connections.
They have multigig wan service as shown in the beginning of the video. As it turns out XGS-PON is here, and the multiple connections isn't really necessary.

1 Gbps limit between the 8 port switch and the WAN/SFPs.
Run the 10Gbps SFP+ to a second switch and use that.

You should have run a conduit for all the ethernet runs. That way, you can easily add new cables as needed in the future.

do you have IDS/IPS on with 2gb? Im only getting 1.3 down and 1.7 up on my studio. Speedtest on my UDM SE I get my full 2.1 up and down.
How do your Ubiquiti cameras pop up on your Apple TV? I assume you are using homebridge

Here’s a thing about wireless I know how to solve the wireless drops one change the channel your access points are on for 2.4 do only use 1 6 11 at 40 make 5ghz the default enable band steering you want the access points 6 channels apart on 2.4 on 5g do them 10 to 20 channels apart if they are wired aps disable mesh only enable mesh if the backhaul is wireless my setup for a drop free connection 11 2.4 5g 149 try using 149 or 169 if you can less range but also less interference with neighbors play with these settings I tested my network rock solid also reboot your aps monthly makes for a better connection once you have it rock solid
Great vid. You mentioned Sonos Wi-Fi connectivity, i get it , i had to switched to Ethernet cable as well. I read on a the sonos forum that all Sonos speakers MUST be connected to the same switch and not thru a smaller switch then to the main network switch. Have you experienced any delay or weirdness with sound with your sonos speaker connection? Currently wall mounting 2 era 300, your method is easier. Very curious

Misleading title. north of gig WITHIN your home, easy. I'm running a 10gig backbone (on a Mikrotik switch) between my NAS, Vmware lab nodes, and several desktops. I can get more than gigabit to outside the house, by using link aggregation and multiple ISP connections.

They have multigig wan service as shown in the beginning of the video. As it turns out XGS-PON is here, and the multiple connections isn't really necessary.
Except WAN services at those speeds are still restrictive and not offered in many places. That'll be a while.
