      G'day Mary Ann 👋🏻🏖️💖 Oh wow, I'm glad that scallop got a mention because I honestly thought it was a fantastic one! The little Hebrew cone was super adorable too, I wish I gave it a special mention at the end. Aww I'm so glad you liked this video; I am a bit sad that it ended up being a short one in terms of shell finds, especially after a week since the last video. Some days are just like that, though 😆 I'm glad that I could show you a bit of my side of the world again 🥰 Thanks for watching!

    Hello Maddie, it wouldn’t be a shelling adventure without a pongy shell😂, the carnelian cowrie looked lovely but I’m glad I didn’t have to deal with the cleaning!

      G'day Alison 👋🏻💖 I don't usually find shells that pong except for those stinky Strombuses 😅 I don't like it, but I do like the appearance of those super "fresh" shells 😂 The cleaning in this one was too bad actually, I just blasted it with the jet setting on the garden hose. From experience, these shells usually need a few days for the insides to get squishier and more rotten first, but this one came out right away, so the snail must have passed away much earlier than I thought 🤔 well, I guess you didn't need to know any of that, but anyways. Thank you so much for watching 🥰

    Hi Maddie, you answered an unasked question in that I now know how you deal with the smelly shells. A blast with the hose is quick and effective😂
    Also great when dog pooh gets on your shoe! Just rewatching your vlog and it was very interesting to see the live cowrie too, he certainly put some speed on when he realised he had an audience😅.
    Always a great pleasure to go with you to the beach❤xxx

      I'm glad that you didn't mind me going on a bit of a tangent with that one 😅 actually, there is more to the process usually. This Cherry Cowrie seemed to be quite soft and rotten (it must have been deceased longer than I originally thought), so the hose was able to...slorp... it out in a matter of seconds. However, once before with a fresh Arabian Cowrie, I needed to have fresh water sitting inside the shell for a few days first before the jet blast did its job. The cowrie can't be submerged in the water though, only the inside of the shell, because as the snail rots, it actually corrodes the shiny shell! I was told that by good ol' Mr Sheller who experienced it first hand, so I believe him. In any case, he was the on that told me about this process...you can't bleach it boil these shiny glossy cowries without damaging them (unless someone knows a better process?), so you need to be a bit creative with cleaning them. As for the Wandering Cowrie, gosh, looking at the playback again, I really wish I'd have held it more steady and away from the shining reflection on the water 😔 but with a big rock against my shins and waves to watch out for, it ended up like this. I was also quite surprised when it started to zoom around and off the rock I was holding!! I guess it didn't appreciate suddenly being in the sunlight 😆 Thanks again, Alison ❤️

      Hi Maddie, it’s all a learning experience, great that you have a friend who gave you the cleaning advice so that you can avoid spoiling the shells but get rid of the smelly remains. There is more to it than meets the eye. Yes, it must be difficult when you are showing us zooming cowries and we don’t know that you are wedged in a rock pool with the tide coming at you, again this info paints a bigger picture, as a viewer now I shall be aware of more than I am seeing. I think we are very lucky to be able to share the great beaches you take us to and the beautiful shells you find. Have a great day, or evening, our day is just starting in the UK. ❤️xxx

      G'day Trudy 👋🏻💖 Oh wow, the love Wandering Cowrie was a nice one, wasn't it! I regret that I didn't hold the camera more steady and face away from the sunlight, but with a big rock resting against my shins, and also keeping an eye on the waves, well, it turned out like it did 😅 it's still a beautiful animal, and I'm glad that I got to see it 😲! The Carnelian Cowrie was really nice this time, I almost never find a shiny one, so I was going to take this home with me regardless of the cleaning it needed (which surprisingly only took a few minutes in the end). Your other selections of the Zebra Top Shell and the Striped Mouthed Periwinkle surprised me; they are common ones here, but I'll try to show them more often 😉 Aww thank you for commenting to Sheila (Kayle) I know she was worrying about you. Don't worry about me, I have plenty of freedom; it just took me a bit to find my equilibrium with a few extra chores to do each week. It hasn't been good shelling weather for the past few days, so I've gotten caught up on the cleaning at home for now. I'm sure I could find more to do, but Ninja demands me to pat her right now. Stay safe and well, Trudy 🙏🏻🥰

    Awesome! I’ve run into my share of freshly rotting mollusks/snails too…smell is terrible! After bleach - I sometimes give the shell a boil and then soak in Febreze for a few days 😂

    • @SandCoffeeRocks
      @SandCoffeeRocks  8 місяців тому +2

      G'day Roxanne 👋🏻🏖️ Oh wow, really 😲 I rarely find them with a stink in the rock pools, because the crabs, fish, critters, and other small snails will usually clean out any shells very quickly (that's if whatever preyed on them didn't eat everything to begin with). Oh by the way; never bleach a shiny shell, it's no good for it 😉 Also, never boil a shiny shell either because it has a very high chance it making hairline cracks all over the shell. So, I can't do that for cowries 😅 instead, I need the garden hose with its most pressure jet setting, and even then, it might need to rot a bit more first (by putting fresh water inside the shell, but not the outside because the rotting juices will damage it) before it's soft enough for the hose jet. Yes, a bit of a different process than yours! Luckily that usually does the trick and no smells remain...although that's just for cowries; some of the conches I find have tight spires/swirls that are really hard to clean out, so I struggle with those ones. I think I used Oxy on them last time 🤔 Anyhoo, thank you for the tips; I will certainly remember your advice for non shiny shells.

    • @FloridaBeachWalks
      @FloridaBeachWalks 8 місяців тому +1

      Thx for these tips! ❤I guess I just got lucky I didn't damage my shiny shells. I'll for sure change my ways in the future in regards to the shiny ones. @@SandCoffeeRocks

    • @SandCoffeeRocks
      @SandCoffeeRocks  8 місяців тому +1

      @@FloridaBeachWalks I think it might also depend on which kind of shiny shell it is. I would stay away from bleach though, because it can damage the shiny... Saying that though, I don't mean just "shiny" because I'm talking more about really "glossy" shell; the ones that look like you've sprayed them with a clear varnish or something to make them gleam. But, I did have a not glossy bonnet that I needed to boil, and it got the cracks, so lesson learned. What kinds of shiny shells to you find?

    • @FloridaBeachWalks
      @FloridaBeachWalks 8 місяців тому +1

      @@SandCoffeeRocks I totally get what you are saying 👍🏼 After reading your comment I do remember a friend saying that bleach can damage shells. In general I only use about a cup of bleach or less anyways to a gallon of water and only soak for a little to take the smell and kill any bacteria. I haven’t damaged or dulled a shell in doing that over 4yrs but will take more precaution in the future to any special finds 👍🏼 The boiling I have only done to a few (after storm shelling or dredge pile) after finding dead critters sludgy contents sliding out 🤮 Oh boy, I find lots of different types of shells but a few nice to find; on the west coast- horse conch, alphabet & Florida cones, tulips, lightning & pear whelks, lace, apple and rose murexes, drills, worms, etc and on the east coast: lion’s paws (especially fond of), different types of orange scallops, giant eastern murex, shark eye moons, tritons, Caribbean vase, kings crown, scotch bonnets, helmets, hawks wings, baby’s ear, …..oh I could go on lol but those are what pops in my mind first at the moment. I love getting to know more about shells 🐚

    Wow ! Cowrie Heaven ! Your Cowrie collection looks awesome. Do you paint them with anything to make them so shiny ?

    • @SandCoffeeRocks
      @SandCoffeeRocks  8 місяців тому +2

      G'day Darren 👋🏻🏖️ it's been surprisingly good for cowries lately - I usually find the best ones in winter rather than summer. Oh no, I don't paint the cowries at all, these ones in my cabinet (if you saw them at the very end of the video) are naturally glossy. I find/see a lot not-glossy cowries too, but they don't end up in my cabinet or as much in the videos. I did mention mineral oil this time though, which is what baby oil is made of (it's sold for a few dollars in the grocery stores) which I sometimes use. Mineral/baby oil is temporary (needs reapplication every few months), and hmm, how to describe it: it hides the white calcification on shells for a while, and brings their original colours back to them. If you use it on a shell that has even a bit of surface shine or a very smooth surface, it will make them shinier and glossier again...the cherry cowrie I found this time isn't as glossy as its neighbours, so I think the snail was actually deceased for longer than I originally thought with the shell losing some of its lustre. Considering that the shell is still in very good condition though, I think the mineral oil will perk it back up. But, if you use the mineral/baby oil on a shell that's rough and with a gritty or pitted texture, then it will not make them shiny after you wipe away the excess oil after a day or two. I have no idea if all of that made sense, so please ask for more clarification if I've skipped over an important part 😅 Basically, I don't use much oil on my shells, I just keep searching for ones that already have the best natural shine on them already; cowries are naturally glossy when alive or freshly deceased. Additionally, the LED strip lighting in my cabinet REALLY makes them gleam, right?? Sometimes the presentation does half the work for you as well! Thanks for watching 🥰
