Excitement on Jon's face has he got completely drawn into the Time Trial Bike of Marco Pantani, great bit of history shared. Thanks guys for the well presented video as always. All the best Andy
beautiful bikes thank you for showcasing them! I grew up in italy and remember seeing wilier ( meaning viva l'italia liberata e redenta, or long live italy, freed and repossessed) in shops in rome..expensive!! I could only dream of having one and had to be happy with my legnano..never saw a kids bike that small, gorgeous!
Hi Jon I bought an used willier bike, pretty much similar to the yellow one but in red (alpes d’huez) for 120€, i love riding this bike, lts light and very responsive. Came with that old Dura Ace, swapped the crank because i live in a montain area and 39-28 is too hard for me, funny part is that the old tech Dura Ace is still lighter than new 10s 105. I love the bike Cheers
A pity you had to change the crank, it is so beatiful. But I do understand, Igot that groupset and I run 39/27 and because of that I can't use the groupset for bikepacking in the mountains. Hilly rides without luggage, yes, but no long climbs with tent and stuff, too weak for that. Great bargain, your bike. And thanks for the info that it's lighter than whatever. Light is always good :-)
@@chrisko6439 I still have the crank, I'm even thinking about putting it back in, that being said, I'm not sure that i will use it again as a climbing bike until i get very fit, i hit the 170bpm fairly easily with that gear range 😥
I miss Cannings! He’s so passionate. And when he says he has/had something you never doubt him because he is just that tech guy that keeps everything. I love it
Ace video. You could almost see time passing with the progression of the bikes. The Pantani bike of choice though has to be his 1998 tour winning Bianchi, Italian, with Campagnolo groupset, on an Italian team with an Italian rider. That raid on the Glibber during that rain, the bags under Ullrich's eyes, his labouring pedalling and the loss of metres with each passing second. The best days racing in my humble opinion of all time. Shown live on Eurosport, David Duffield commentating. Today I reckon that stage would have been shortened due to the weather, denying all involved that look at sporting greatness. The other bike for the collector? Greg Lemond's TT winning Bottechia of the last stage of the 1989 tour. Lemond threw the best shapes on the bike and is to my mind one of only three riders in the history of the sport to have won the tour completely clean. But who are the other two?
Awesome video Jon. One of my favorites so far. Loved everything about it. As a big fan of the pirate it was a joy to watch. Didn't know he rode such long cranks.
john c'mon that bottle cage on Pantani's TT bike is a Ciussi Inox. Can be bought round the corner for 20 quid. But it's still a really nice, sturdy, reliable and light bottle cage (for the weight weenies it weighs around 50g)
I would love to see what you can find at the basso bikes headquarters or deposit (if they keep bikes, I actually don't know), I know you like weird Italian hand made bikes and parts, like corse corse in Japan. It would be fantastic to see what they have hidden in there. I know they don't have a big history and are not really well known but hey, that's the fun, you don't know what you may find
I think Pantani's stem is dialed to his prefered riding position - Standing up and crouching down at the same time. He was unaware his custom saddle was uncomfortable, because he never spent enough time sitting down to notice it.
Jon Marko pandani yellow is superb it stands out a mile class I remember pandani cycling this bike in the mid to late 90s in tour to France. giro del Italia
I liked the wooden bike but you try to see if the De Bernardi Bike Company still exists. Mr. De Bernardi used to be the engineer for the Legnano Bike Company. I do own a custom built De Bernardi Thirty Speed Road Bike from scratch. I would like to see the history of this Bike Company. Their bikes can be brought on eBay as a frame set and through another seller as a complete bike. Cheers!
John holding a wooden bike saying "I WOOD quite like to ride this one" and asking "Who WOOD you like me to go and visit next?". I couldn't stop laughing :D If I were there I WOOD give you a big high five :D
I like the time trial aero one at the very end and the kids bike is cool for novelty...plus the cool copper paint. Jon your passion for vintage bikes is the best part of this channel for me. And your obsession with details. Check out my thread of killer vintage time trial and velodrome bikes over at Bike Forums www.bikeforums.net/classic-vintage/1183324-picture-your-favorite-vintage-time-trial-bicycles-why.html I think you will appreciate it and there are tons of super color pictures of very cool and rare bikes and kit. I get no monetary reward....just for the love of it.
My favorite bike was the one you did not show, made of Columbus SL, with Campanolo NuvoRecord or Gipiemme I was at the old factory headquarters/outlet in 1984 When in Rossano Veneto, did you climb Monta Grappa? I used a 42-21 and took 2 hours (190lb)
@Jon Cannings I got a bike with a 3T Forge Ahead stem just like the one on the Pantani bike (Dura Ace 7700 groupset as well). I was wondering about that strange clamping mechanism (stem/steerer tube) and if it's safe?
daAnder71 Yes, thats the bike he didn’t ride. This is the one autobus.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?id=tech/2004/news/jun08a Even Scott publicly claimed it to be a CR1
Curious how that wooden bike was made. It looks like a single piece but that would take one large tree to create. Did they take the orientation of the wood grain into account when building it, similar to what we do now with carbon?
Pantani's road bike is lil guy bike big guy stuff, he needed that 140cm stem for his layed out position descending with his stomach on the saddle! Visit Lance Next bahahaaa
hey jon can you go on fiver and get a designer or have one of your guys create an old-timey logo for "Jon Cannings Elbow Grease"? Id buy a sticker or a sign for my garage
Yeah, same with the great cyclosross bike we've been shown recently, it's kind of a shame. They probably don't want to change anything of the original setup.
You can't help but love a video of Jon getting his grubby hands on old bikes.
That wooden Wilier is majestic!
Thanks John and Wilier for making this. N+1 just got more difficult.
We need to see your bike collection, Jon. Stop teasing.
I second that!
jackseph03 no the video would be hours long lol
@@wolfendenracing2826 You're probably right, but wouldn't you like to watch it?
Chris Ko yeah you’re right lol
they recorded the raw footage years ago, they are still working on cutting it down to 30 minutes
That kids bike is awesome! Made Jon look like a giant!
I was there with my son in 2003 Jon.
Thanks for the memories !
That would be great see all the GCN presenters collection of bikes.
I loved the little kids bike. Totally amazing! I want one too Jon.
The yellow Pantani bike. So classic and fast looking.

Jon's knowledge is astounding, great watching him geek out on some lovely kit!
Thanks, Jon, for the tour and conversation. Bike tech has progressed so much in this century alone, amazing.
I feel sooo chilled watching this . Thanks Jon . Perfect!

Definitely Pantani's bike. I have one almost identical and I love it.
I miss Cannings! He’s so passionate. And when he says he has/had something you never doubt him because he is just that tech guy that keeps everything. I love it
Love these old school bikes
Dura ace 9-speed was a fantastic groupset.
The Italian way is the same routing for bicycles sold as new from retailers. Front/right, rear/left
That little kids bike - so cute!
Jon, U rock. Glad U back.
I would say the tt bike was the favorite, then You pulled out that kids bike. So cool.

Thank you! I love these videos.
Love any Jon nerding out videos.
I see you have good taste in brakes. I have always run the front brake on the right.
I kept expecting a museum docent to come running in and yelling at him for touching the exhibits.
Go to Volpiano, just outside Torino and met the legend Aldo Gios still making steel frames.
I would love to see what you can find at the basso bikes headquarters or deposit (if they keep bikes, I actually don't know), I know you like weird Italian hand made bikes and parts, like corse corse in Japan. I agree. Let's see your collection!
I'd love to see Jon visit the Bianchi factory and museum. Lets see bikes from The Heron and the Phoenix among others.
I give them all super nice
Jon literally got a "woody", making this video.
I 'wood' have put all the cranks in the 3 o'clock position. So many supernice-fails for the bike vault...
The "classic" position in all the old catalogues was 2&7 o'clock. Not sure where this 3 o'clock position originated
I think Pantani's stem is dialed to his prefered riding position - Standing up and crouching down at the same time. He was unaware his custom saddle was uncomfortable, because he never spent enough time sitting down to notice it.
jon smoked a cigarette after this
Eurobubble70 orgasmic 👍🏻
That's usually what happens after reaching bike-asm.
15:23 - IIRC lots of vintage Italian bikes were cabled up for right-hand front brake as that's how Coppi had his cabled
The kid's bike was the clear winner. If you rode that as a kid, everybody would want to be your friend and have a go.
I'd love to see De Rosa and Legend Bikes factory/shop tours
I especialy liked Pantanis two bikes! Funny, how they are so big, though he was so small!
And the both have/had Dura Ace 7700, like my bike!
As an American I’m not familiar with Wilier but they are beautiful 🤩
Great video. I have a question. What was the benefit for soldering the spokes on a wheel? More rigidity?
my fave bike was the second last one, the kid's bike. i want it.
Jon Marko pandani yellow is superb it stands out a mile class I remember pandani cycling this bike in the mid to late 90s in tour to France. giro del Italia
When you wheeled out that kid’s road bike, I thought “ Oh look! Egan Bernal’s bike!”
those are the pro bikes when there was no youtube and i buy cycling mags and Bicycling mags
I would love if you went to see Sarto or Passoni.
Just to see how Italian bespoke bike builders does it.
And both of them have so beautiful bikes.
@daAnder71 Shut up.
You know what i mean.
And not everyones first language is english.
It's not even my second language at the moment.

How can anyone not love the xentis mark 1 wheels??
How about some videos on old SBDU Raleighs up to and including Dyna Tech?
Ok, now I really feel like I have one foot in the grave.
1990 equals "vintage" bike.
My first bike was a 1966 Schwinn Stingray coaster. ⚰️
Mine was a Raleigh Chopper in 74. What a bike , so dangerous though 😳
And the winner for me is.....pantani's bike! The best...

Jon, doesn't Bradley Wiggins have a great collection of vintage bikes? That would make a good video.
Another great video Jon. Favourite ! Any one of them they are willing to give me.
What?! Didn’t they have Ballan’s WC-winning bike in the museum? That was also on Willier, wasn’t it?
Check out JC's sister channel, where he does this but instead rifles through knicker drawers.
The look pedals on that Pantani! Soooo sexy 😍

Oh, and yes, I'm looking to replace the BB soon, because the old one has a lot of play in it, it didn't last very long.
SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Visit Colnago!
Wilier bikes are italian jewels.....
Its a shame that they can't keep their bikes. I would want to keep mine.
No signs of the bike Rebellin used to win his Ardennes triple in 2004? Wait, no... that was a Scott CR1 painted as a Wilier
daAnder71 Yes, thats the bike he didn’t ride. This is the one autobus.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?id=tech/2004/news/jun08a Even Scott publicly claimed it to be a CR1
