Jon Cannings Enthusiasm for Bikes is uncanny. Love this guy, a presenter tailor made for the tech channel!
Thanks
And now he’s gone, dammit Jon! Well maybe not gone but I haven’t seen him. /:
How about this for the ultimate geek out for Jon. Build a bike for next year's hill climb season. There should be someone at GCN Towers to ride it through the complete hill climb season. That would be a great series of videos.
Great idea.
Im sold lets go
Brilliant they can put the profits from their new book to some good use.
Come on Olivia. Out of retirement
Oh yeah! This would be the bomb.
11:22 "bikes like this don't really have to last more than 15 minutes. " That's what the mechanics at my local bike shop seem to think 😂.
Absolutely awesome! Thank you GCN for including me in this. Loved the chat we had♥️🙏🏼Hope everyone enjoyed the video!
thanks for your time mate. Jon.
Fantastic ride Ed
taiwan KOM is waving at you bro! 2020? ive got you covered on the footages
The sponsored videos that feature super bikes are great and serve their purpose, but I really enjoy it when Jon and GCN show their appreciation for hodge podge type of custom bikes that still look like serious fun (to build and ride).
Love how Ed smashed everyyone but had heaviest bike and probably some of the more cheaper components e.g. ultegra
well .. he is getting paid to ride bikes for a living. not saying hes the only pro in the hc circuit but the majority are just keen strong amateurs
A S the difference being a pro makes is not all that you may think it is pal
A S plus, I don’t get paid😳
Time for some sponsors to get behind Ed. Great guy, works hard, knows his stuff.
@@edlaverack my apologies.. thought you were pro conti since you rode the tob. sincerely sorry. no matter what it was a brilliant effort
Never expected to see an aliexpress saddle in GCN Tech XD
which one?
@@888899999888 the second one is ali express 03:30 also 09:00 last one also i think
@@Superstocker669 do you know if mcfk is actually Chinese or German brand? For me it looks like Chinese who sell it with 1000% markup (Germany packaging) in eu because it's lame website and it does nothing to take it down from aliexpress
@@888899999888 i dont know, maybe youre right. Got two non branded 3k saddle from ali express myself. They are actually really well made and 95g light.
You're dead right - I've got 2 and they cost £9 and have been superb for over 2 years... comfortable and super light (and cheap!!!)
The GCN guys often attract butterflies in their videos. Notice the Painted Lady settled near the the rear light of the car which flew off at 6:53. Fascinating vid from Jon as usual.
Dear John, I can see in your face that you enjoy the light weight- tech, and you trasmite that to the viewers, thank you! 😊🤓👍😊👋
@12:41 the patented Jon Cannings signing off move. That little sway and that hand movement with those spirit fingers. Haha. Something about your mannerisms Jon, you're one of a kind!!
yes, and don't you forget about the patent. If I catch you EVER trying to do it, then heads will fly ;-)
Jon
GCN are back on trac! 🥳👌
Love the article - interesting and not annoyingly oriented towards selling some cr@p.
Good work mr. Cannings 👍👍
That carbon tube with steel lugs was pretty cool
John McLeod Agreed! Lovely tube and lug construction.
@@SpininStyle Why didn't he weigh it, damn.
Beautiful video and bike gear! Enjoyed it a lot.
Really digging all these single chainring setups
You definitely need to attend next year Jon as it is interesting to see what bike setups riders choose for hill climbs.
The mere mention of Ridley Helium just makes me miss #Lasty all the more.
Don't worry Michael he's still here, just a bit busy degreasing our old bike chains
Oh boy... I'm going to try to get my Trek Emonda near the 6kg mark for next year, might be difficult without any tubular wheels but let's have a go! Jon is like a kid in a sweet shop in this video... Go to other hill climbs and you'll spot a fixed gear or two though, which are seriously impressive.
I love hill clim, and lightweight tech. Thank you Guys!!!!
Lightweight Lust! Great video Jon!
Great work JC. I could see the love in you eyes for some of those bikes.
cheers Jolly.
OMG Jon fantastic Tech video!!!! 👏🏻 Would have liked some more weights on more of those bikes but I wonder how much lower weight can ya get a bike than 4.9 or 5 kg......🤔😃
Just love the Ridley paintwork...
Absolutely love these bikes. Brilliant vid.
Thanks J NR we loved making it !
Great content!
More of this!
Man all of them are soo unique and lovely more lightweight techs plz!
Love you UKs and the hill climb scene. Wish we had this tradition in the US. It looks like a great time and comraderie
that scott addict is what i'd ride. those old team issue frames definitely mean business. hmx frames were the lightest out there and still are some of the lightest. one of the few competitors i could think of is the (now old) focus izalco max.
saw that scott at peth bank hc, its really cool. the owner was walking it down the hill lol
7:56 : Joe from BikeRadar crashing the video :D
That steel and carbon bike is super sweet. Love stuff like that
Love British hill climb season.
Jon geeking out - one of my fave things 👍
Regarding those Dyneema spokes @7:45. What knot did they use to hold the spokes to the hub? Looks like they trimmed the ends off pretty close. Do they ever come untied? I also know that there better be no burrs in those drilled out holes. One question, could you lace one piece of Dyneema as two spokes to avoid the knots? If so, you could lace the same piece of spoke to the same side and cut down on the number of holes to drill in the hub.
Gonna need the weight on the bike with the dyneema spokes, looks like it wants to float away : D
5.7kg
I think my seatpost weighs as much as their bikes.
Amazing bike👍
Wow- 44/28 is not as low a gear as I'd think for a hill climb. I lust for Dan Evans' Cannondale- It's almost half the weight of mine.
It's the knife cap bike mechanic from Gee Milner dream build series at the start of the video :O
I want Jon back :)
the tifosi? ifosi? bike is sick!!
I'm pretty sure that was Gee Milner from Dream Builds at 6:07 ? Actually recognised the bike from his channel 🔥
really like this; extremes!!
I really think they should be riding heavier, 50mm aero wheels since the aero saving will most certainly be faster than the weight saving (as long as they go faster than 15mph).
5:25 that bullhorn idea is great, not sure why everyone doesnt use these, lighter and definitely more aero than drop bars
Took me some time to get use to bullhorns
the Ridley Helium is an absolute dream
I think it would be great if all the presenters competed in a GCN hill climb championship, perhaps as a group entry to one of the 2020 events 😁👍🏻
I love these bikes!
COOOOOOL!!!!!
idk but these videos are so interesting hahaha
Single at the front is a winner for me.
Thinking of single oval chain at the front with 11 speed
That cannondale is really nice
At Bike24 u can buy AX-Lightness without a problem!
That Ridley sl is super nice
Wow!! The bikes are super light! I got a 30 lbs mountain bike. Haha!!
being older, growing up at the end of steel bikes, hill climb bikes are closer in my mind to what a race bike should be, skeletal things with every gram possible shaved off.
with technology advancing to the point that you can have an chunky looking aero bike around the minimum weight , climbing bikes are becoming a bit redundant in road racing. isn't it time for the UCI to look into dropping minimum weight?
More of this kind of racing , that the average person can get into.👍🏻
Stupid question, why don't they remove one of the brakes? For hill climbing one brake might be enough and they will save quite some weight I reckon.
Rules state, have to run both brakes.
@@ryancoddington9162 not the uci rules but the race rules?
Love this. Weight weenie geekfest. Stuff the uci. Im not entering races i just want a superlight bike.
No powermeter on Dan Evans' bike?
Not a disc in sight :P Hill climbs might be something I could get into I think, never been drawn to the club sunday ride scene for some reason. If I had a couple grand lying about I'd love to make up a climbing specific bike
also as always , british organised events and organisations r superior to the dumb EU regulated ones :) brexit FTW
Those bikes are so light! Surprised they don't snap when you crank on them!
Looks almost like they've sped the footage up a bit towards the end unless Jon was just in a bit of a rush
I wonder what was the relation between the bike weight and the result on the finish line ;)
Would love to know the weight of that Canyon. Planing a similar project.
That's my baby :-) 5.4KG as you see it, great fun to ride too. Let me know if you haave any build / spec queries.
@@jameshutchins8134 What a beaut! Thanks for your reply. I was actually interested in the front end. I'm assuming the bike came with Canyon's aero cockpit - did you find a standard bar and stem set-up lighter? Cheers
If you want the lightest drivetrain, just use an internally-geared hub which is much lighter than a conventional deraillur and cassette system and belt drive, as rubber belts are way lighter than most metal chains
A cannondale with hunt wheels 😂 a tifosi bike 🤣 the Scott was great, though 👍🏻
1:39 - suggestion: for the hill climb, just leave the break in the back and remove the one in the front - it is enough for the event, it will be more aero and lighter.
UK hill climb rules specify 2 working brakes are required. Fixed gears count the fixed wheel as a braking method so they can run front brake only.
Cool video.....
Whoa, a track tire on a road race...
KEEP YOUR AERO I LL TAKE THESE THANKS :)
How they do fings like this
My everyday bike is marginally less than the lightest one of these at 4.87 but it is a singlespeed. Surprised not to see any THM parts - their Clavicula crankset is insanely light.
JC in his element!
Im eating a dominoes vegan pizza watching this. Amazing some riders run such heavy and big front chainrings for these hill climb events.
Hey Durain! I wanted a bike that I could ride the following day on a club ride to be honest. Functional and fast :) Hope you enjoyed your pizza! Making my mouth water here!!
Well I guess I'm getting domino's now.
I'd take the smallest cassette with the smallest front gear possible for all the ratios needed and remove as many chain links that I could. Furthermore, if you are only climbing, you don't even need a rear brake, specially if this is a time trial.
Man I expect more of this bikes in the #taiwanKOMchallenge2019 ! Miss you Dan E.
Hey jon u need to comeback to taiwan !
I've never been to Taiwan! Cheers, Jon
@@gcntech taipei cycle show!!!! and find this place where all the vintage bikes are stored and collected by this avid guy! you wont believe what you will see!! see you soon JC !
ive got you covered for taiwan kom if you want to try!
10:20 - how do you get a drivetrain to spin as smoothly as that?
Thomas King it doesn’t mean anything, what matters is the resistance under load.
Ceramic ball bearings with no grease, just a light oil. They need to be re-oiled after every short ride. If you spin a normal bike with gears correctly set the resistance in the bearings (grease) will slow the movement. If anything is out of sync chain, over greased bearings the bike will have resistance under load. Although then again the Lad that Won was on the heaviest bike with alloy wheels and a double chain ring 😂
I like rthe English hill climbing . Miss it in the flat North of the Netherlands jealous mode on.
You shoudl come over and give it a try!
7:56 its our beautiful boys joe and squid
@bikeradar crossover at 7:55?
How much did that bike with the semi steel frame weigh?
Sadly we didn't get the chance to weigh it!
I've done just about everything I can to an all-round road bike to lower weight. It's a carbon frame, Reynolds tubular wheels, Dura-Ace 9000 gropuset. Not unlike the Ridley at the end but I can't get it down below 7kgs. Going from Ultegra to DA saved all of 200 grams. The only thing I can change for more carbon is the handlebar and a lighter saddle. That might save another 200 grams. These guys are a full kilo lighter again.
earthstick || Yeah, the tech here is ridiculous. My race bike is a pretty budget oriented build (as it's really all I can afford). Aluminum frame, carbon fork, chinese 50mm carbon wheels, Shimano 105 5800 w/Ultegra calipers, and all this ends up with a weight of 8.4kg.
@Aramintai I agree the wheelset is where the biggest savings can be made. That's why I choose shallow section carbon tubulars from a good manufacturer. They weigh 1070g without tyres. Groupset is DA and the finishing kit is carbon apart from the bars. Carbon bars don't save much. If I forget puncture protection and went for the lightest tyres I could save about 200g. A Carbon bar and saddle with no padding would save about aother 150 grams so I could just sneak in under 6.8kgs but I would no longer have an all-round bike.
And the winner is.........the lad on the normal bike 😂
Love hill bikes......
What I don’t understand, is why the brakes haven’t been taken off altogether, if there’s no rules, surely that’s an option for weight savings 🤷🏻♂️or is that a rule, must have brakes for going uphill?
yes
Need 2 brakes. If your riding fixed you're allowed just a front.
These bikes in the 12 to 15k range?
Can buy mine for £2400
Why any brakes at all?
Why does everyone have both brakes? You could save some grams by only having the front/rear without any cables. You could even only use one hood and save a lot of weight. I was also surprised that most of these bikes still had paint, if you took it off you could shave about 100g-150g off the total weight
You have to have two brakes to compete in the hill climb
I’m a sprinter and I approve this message.
Can you do a rear brake delete?
The rules stipulate that you must have two working brakes to compete

They are nopinz overshoes
@@rob-c. Thank you very much 😉
Runs an Ultegra crank on his bike but saves 2g by not using any bar endplugs... Had the legs for becoming the champion though.
Lol!
Maybe say how much each bike weighs.
Sign Dan up lads. He would be great on the channel 👍
here in Spain we do not even have these bicycles so light, at most the lightest bicycle in Spain weighs 7,200 kg
.
Joe spotted at 7:56 ?
Its already been said but gonna say it agai . Ed won on one of the heavier bikes there if not heaviest of the proper contenders.
Thank you John.
John S He needs an invitation for the 2020 #taiwankom ! Sup ED !
@@anthonyhomercycling :)
I hope Jon had a chance to cool down after this, an hour or two in a coffee shop, at least.
Rim brakes rim brake rim brake...rim for road disk for dirt
Why not fixed gears ? With Dolan Seta easy to build a 4-4.5kg setup... 🙄 And its a hillclimbing X fixed gear is helping u to climb.
When I see Mcfk stuff, I have Samuel L Jackson in my head. Not sure why...
Channelqinyang Haha. Yeah, close to BaMF
Save weight on your bacon n sausages instead
