Correction on single vs dual carriageway. We have many single carriageways with more than one lane going in each direction, 53°16'45.2"N 2°26'22.3"W for example. We even have a single carriageway motorway, the A38(M) Aston Expressway. There is also the odd single lane dual carriageway, 51°57'53.4"N 3°39'11.4"W for example. The difference between the two is a central reservation or barrier between the two directions, you would call a dual carriageway a divided highway.
So true. I live in quite a rural area and know our roads pretty well but, if I drive an unknown rural road and see that SLOW sign I always think 💭 how slow! 🤷
Yes there are roads in the UK that have no speed limit but they'll be on private land and not publicly owned highways. Scotland is the most likely place to find them with large estates covering considerable areas. However I can't imagine there's many that are straight enough or have a good enough road surface to be able to drive at high speed.
I just took a road trip in the UK with Californian friends and it was necessary to tell them that the speed limit was not advice on the speed to drive at... They are so used to driving the speed limit *plus* 5-10 mph. It was quite hairy at times.

The speed limit on urban motorways, e.g.., right in the centre of Glasgow, is 50mph, which allowed for a few rather scary on and off ramps to be built there on the wrong side of the road.
that's the West Kilbride Rd. out of Dalry, you can definitely hit 60+ along parts of it (road/weather conditions & your car allowing). Been doing it for 40 years.

Up north, I use lay-bys to let traffic build up pass safely by. There are not many lay-bys in Ayrshire tho...

Driving in Glasgow is never fun for me lol. Especially if I’m close to the city centre, one wrong turn and I’m getting a £60 fine for the ULEZ zone 😂
