  • Let's try making our own SIMMS and upgrade my ST to 4 megabytes!
One of the first upgrades I ever got for my ST was a RAM upgrade to take it from the stock 512KB to 1MB. The one I got was the Marpet XTra RAM Deluxe board as I quite liked the idea of being able to add more RAM in the future.
At the time I never did, but it's the future now, so that's exactly what I'm going to do. At some point in the machine's past I did stick two 1MB SIMMs in it to take the machine to 2.5MB but I don't remember when or why. They might have been spares from upgrading a PC.
Initially I wanted to try out making my own SIMMS using a PCB design I found on github but for some reason it didn't work. It's possible I have the wrong RAM chips or I damaged them somehow when soldering. I'm not quite sure.

Loving the videos, and really enjoying seeing an ST from the day being worked on again. My ST sadly did end up sold and my current one is a from eBay. Still having lots of fun with wild upgrades like the UltraSatan, 4Mb and Gotek drives. Although finding joystick extenders is amazingly hard these days considering they were standard issue back in the day. The mouse is, I agree still garbage.

Another excellent hardware upgrade video. The mp3 music files that I used at my wedding are about six times larger than the capacity of the RAM that you've installed. What you need now is a nice 20 MB hard drive to fully trick out your ST :)

Funny you should say that. There is a deleted scene where I pointed out the on-die cache for my PC's CPU is far larger than the RAM the 68000 could even access.
If I can build it, there'll be an 8 gig SD card to use as a hard drive.

@@ncot_tech what beast of PC do you have? Or what is far larger by your means? I mean the best CPUs do have L3 Cache in 32KB territory, while this is double the m68k address space, I dont know if I would be so impressed by it and call it far larger...
      😁

Nice video. Always good when people show their failures, as well as their successes. Makes the video much more real and relatable! Thanks.

Really well explained - I am feeling ready to upgrade my ST - not any home made SIMMS tho! Thanks.

Congratulations. I really enjoyed this video. You managed to go quite deep into it while still keeping hold of the thread that held the video together and you've put a lot of effort into editing etc. I'll look forward to the next instalments.

Excellent video and very well explained! I learned a lot about the ST. One thing I might have missed: Did your home-made SIMMs work at the end after you disabled the on-board RAM, or was everything done with the extra SIMMs you bought?

Hi. How are you going to remove the rust and then prevent it from coming back?
