    Nice job Jess B with those MT chips. I had an Amiga case which was delivered to me in pieces. Polyester putty did a great job filling up the missing pieces and reinforcing those really thin joints. Another great homemade material is cotton with super glue. The cotton fibers turn that plastic into lightweight "rock"! I also used a couple of legs from resistors for extra support. I heated them up, pushed in the plastic and covered them with putty. I don't worry any more even when my cat jumps on the machine !

      Thanks for the tip. I actually have a few different ideas to try out in the future. I’m kinda curious to see which ones work best.

    Oh this is fascinating to see! But it demolishes a memory I had of upgrading the RAM in my Atari STe when I was about 11 years old. There’s no way I would have been able to do all that back then!

    • @techdept
      @techdept  8 місяців тому +3

      The STe has waaaay different memory slot that are much easier to upgrade. Metal note, buy Atari STe

      It’s a great machine, and I grew up with the Amiga.

    ah, the computer of my childhood!
    i was introduced to midi sequencing with a cracked version of Cubase and my fathers Korg X5DR using the ST.
    i love your content and your collection!

      I never got to use Cubase on the ST, but it did come across my desk in college on a few old power macs. Later I had it for PC but by then I was using it for vocal performance rather than MIDI sequencing. Great to see it’s still around form it’s ST beginnings.

    4:48 I was getting sooo invested in that epic battle for that screw's freedom from the tyranny of the evil warranty sticker by the end of that clip and it cut right before we could bear witness to the glorious victory JESS NOOOOOOO!!!! :V

    "These days more famous for not being an Amiga 500". That's a great line. 😂

    • @techdept
      @techdept  7 місяців тому +2

      I was pleased with that line. I had an Amiga growing up,but I’ve a real soft spot for the ST. I like the design of the keyboard, the case and the general ‘quality’ feel of the machine. I did get to borrow a cousins ST for a while and loved playing meglomainia and Life and Death on the machine. I was sad to hand it back.

      @@techdept Sadly my only memory of the Atari ST is playing it over at a friend's house a few times. Didn't know that friend too well (he was actually a friend of my brother), and I was very young back then. I can't even remember the games we played anymore. Maybe I should buy one off eBay or something, just for the fun of it. (Also recently bought a Schneider Euro PC, but I am missing the correct cables to actually hook it up...)

    Nice video Jess. We had a 1040FM years ago, sadly it went to the tip in 2012 before I got interested in old computers. It was in very nice condition like your machine. I have four ST's now, although two are very yellow indeed. One of them doesn't load some games, I wonder if is something to do with an older TOS version. However in your case you seem to have a later machine, but TOS may possibly explain the compatibility.

    • @techdept
      @techdept  7 місяців тому

      Yeah, I’ve three ST machines. One original ST with external disk drives and two 1040s that both have problems. One of them has the painted grey case which looks great, if the keyboard hadn’t started yellowing.

    Nice looking Atari ST here. Sure the case is really fragile!

    • @techdept
      @techdept  7 місяців тому +1

      It so is. Some of the parts are so thin it’s a miracle it’s still in one single piece at all.

    Hi, Jess B. I loved the way you did not use a load of jargon. Like some repair channels do. Nice video. Stay safe to you and your loved ones. 💻

    • @techdept
      @techdept  7 місяців тому

      Thanks for that. I did try and keep things simple, partly because jargon doesn’t always help explain, and partly because I’m learning as I go as well. :).

    try baking soda and super glue to weld plastic and other stuff

    09:36 MT RAM! Once again Made in USA isn't necessarily good. Wonder if all of these could be replaced with eight 44256 (or whatever a 256 k X 4 part is) like I did with replacing eight MT RAMs on a Commodore 64 with two 4464s.

    • @techdept
      @techdept  7 місяців тому +1

      Yup. MT ram is a scourge. Fortunately it seems like just a single ic for now. But I’m sure others will fail over the years.

    Nice job, but i have to admit i was struggling to get through the whole video because the music was annoying AF! Maybe consider at least turning the volume way down.

    These cases break if you look at them funny. Is there anyone that produces new ones with less shitty plastic?

    • @techdept
      @techdept  7 місяців тому +1

      I’m now suspicious of the main board rather than the mouse as I noticed in the early footage of me using the machine, the mouse worked ok. I also checked both mice on my original 520 and they work fine. So more fault finding to do.

    • @catriona_drummond
      @catriona_drummond 7 місяців тому

      @@techdept Oh dear, good luck!For me it was indeed the mouse, another one did work fine. On an Amiga 600 I had it was a cold solder spot on the connector.
