  • We love this nifty system for raising and lowering masts! When sailing in Poland's vast Lake District you need to drop the mast to get under the low bridges that connect the 2,000+ lakes to the rivers and canals. This Polish-designed Antila 33.3 is available in a coastal and inshore version. This one (CE category C) uses an A-frame and is powered by an electric winch. In this video Wojtek and Patrycja from Undiscovered Sailing show us how it all works.

Do you have close-up photos of your a-frame attachment points on the deck as well as the top of the a-frame?

Can do this on my Tomahawk 25 using the spinnaker pole as the gin for leverage. I added 2 u-bolts either side of the mast as far out as I could to attach tensioned halyards to help keep the mast centralised as it goes up or down. The U-bolts are also part of the boom brake system in regular use. The mast is 30ft and was fairly surprised how light it was first time I took it down, can carry it around the yard fairly easily on my own.

Here we pay the boat yard £100 up and £100 down😢

Pretty darn cool. Makes servicing stuck halyards and other mast issues a lot easier too...
