  • Ever since Pyzel announced they were releasing this board, I have wanted to review it. Coming out of Hawaii, I suspected this board would like a bit of grunt and it did not disappoint! Pyzel really pulled out a hard charging Midlength.
    I surfed it in hollow Beachbreak, some pretty flat conditions and then in solid 6-8ft Jbay.
    I rode it in the stock dimensions:
    Size: 7'6 x 21 3/4 x 3 1/16
    Volume: 53.40 Litres
    I weigh 115kg and am 6ft Tall.
    Order: www.pyzelsurfboards.co.za/pro...
    Pyzel say of the board:
    Easy paddling, responsive and loose, the Mid Length Crisis has a semi-traditional, wide-point forward outline that is sleek and race'y for fast, down-the-line drive, but full bodied enough to provide added stability and glide in weaker, slower waves. It has a beautiful foil from nose to tail, with a rolled deck that leaves the meat in the middle of the board to help with paddling and nicely thinned out rails for sensitivity and bite. The rocker is a moderate, long, clean curve running from tip to tail without any radical changes or flip. It is designed for fast paddling and to easily generate speed, carry flow, and smooth turning at any speed.
    The bottom contours are a mild vee with double concave built into it (the old school term is Spiral Vee). This basically means that the board has no problem tipping from rail to rail, making smooth transitions through turns an easy accomplishment for all levels of surfer. The fin set-up is 2+1 single box, which gives you options of single fin flowing or the added drive and control of some small side-bites.

    I purchased the Pyzel MLC (6'8") partially because of this review. I just got back from a two week surf trip and put in 25+ sessions on the MLC in everything from heavy beach breaks to lined up point breaks. The Regular Guy review was spot on in terms of the performance of the board in large surf. It was amazing in juicy conditions! However, I do think the board performs a bit better than suggested in smaller surf. I will say this is definitely not a board that you can just plug in some fins and it is either magic or not on the first few sessions. For example, I much preferred the board as a Single Fin (Jeff McAllum 7.5 from Captain Fins) as compared to a 2+1 setup (Greenough 6.5 with SB1 side bytes). I felt that the board livened up and had much less drag as a single fin. The foiled rails and pulled in tail provided plenty of hold even on very steep wave faces. I also didn't have as many problems surfing smaller and softer waves perhaps because of the single fin setup and because I am pretty light (68 kg). I agree with the Regular Guy that the mushier surf is not where this board shines, however I found it surprisingly fun in smaller waves when considering how well it performed in big surf. The only conditions I found that I really wanted my shortboard was in breaks where you really needed to hook into the pocket off the drop to make the wave. I made it work by angling in, but the length of the board and low entry rocker wasn't the best. Of course, I would imagine all mid length surfboards suffer this problem. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend this board to an experienced surfer who wants a mid-length style one board quiver, who is open to experimenting with fin configurations, and who wants the challenge of a board that is not the easiest to learn but offers great satisfaction if mastered.

      Great feedback! Do you think it could work as a regular thruster e.g. central and sides F6 (of same size) or the fins placement definitively exludes this fin set up?

    I actually thought that board was suiting you nicely in the bigger stuff, giving you the speed and glide for Jbay. I've got a Dutchie twin pin 7'2" with channels and that's the first mid length that I've tried and to be honest it's awesome. Super fast and very responsive, I usually ride it in waist and higher and decent waves as I've got a groveller, a fish and a longboard for the other kind of days. After seeing your reviews I thought I'd add to the quiver and was looking around for a CI mid or a Pyzel but when I checked them out of the LSS I was sort of sucked to see how bulbous alot of them are. The CI in particular is super chunky from the nose down and my longboard is more refined around the entry rockers and especially the tail. The Pyzel as well seems very thick up front but that shape and bottom will make it go in the steeper stuff. I've got a Seaside and Beyond as well and that shape seems very different to a lot of the mids about (and goes great). The back half of that and into the tail is done so well. Would love to see a review of a Dutchie version of a mid and especially a Chomper Twin Mid as he's doing some really beautiful shapes and channels on Mids.

    Love the reviews! Between Pyzel Midlength crisis, CI Mid, and Chilli Midstrength, which do you like best in waist-to-head high point breaks that are fairly flat in shape? Does the midstrength have too much rocker to cruise in rolling waves?

    • @TheRegularGuyReview
      @TheRegularGuyReview  2 роки тому +3

      Ahoy, both the chilli and pyzel prefer some power and hollow. The Pyzel specifically would not be my choice for a flat wave. My choice on this kind of wave would be the CI as it carries speed and flow so much better over flat sections. The Chilli would be my second choice. Thanks for the support.

    Have you tried it with twins up front and a small trailer/stabiliser in the box? Its a pretty cool set up because you can re-position the trailer to dial in the amount of looseness you want from the twins. For me it works better than the 2+1 single.

    Hey man stoked on your review vids. Looking to get a mid length for my dad who surfs almost as good as you but just coming back from a shoulder injury. He’s been long boarding but at his age he might not be hoping back down to a short board. Looking to get him something in the 7’6 range that paddles really well and can still do turns on. Surfs primarily at churches (between San onofre and trestles San Clemente. Softer right hand point break. Wondering if you could recommend something since all your mid length vids are great. Cheers.

    Kai, I'm gonna be brutally and rather biasedly honest with you guy, so bear with me please.
    Watching the footage and comparing to your CI Mid and Chilli Mid-strength reviews (in fact most of the mid lengths you reviewed) I don't think the board did anything good for you. Some things better than boards that I felt were too small for you (on shortboard reviews), but everything worse than a proper mid-length and what they represent.
    I'd like to preface the next bit by openly stating that I dislike Pyzel and think he's a hack.
    Having bought a Phantom last year and returning it 3 sessions later (deadest and most uninspiring board I've ever surfed) I had a Mid-strength on order and walked into the local local to catch up. Saw they had a few Crisis' in stock and my first thoughts when I saw it and picked it up were just like yours: this is basically just a gun. Put it on a stand, ran my hands up and down and turned to the guys and said "this will never work as a mid-length". I reckon Pyzel decided to jump on the popularity bandwagon, grabbed his gun CAD file, scaled it down some with a few minor tweaks and released it. Ka-ching! Ka-ching! I'd really like to see some R&D footage or even his team surfing a few models but there's none: footage or a team... John John riding a Pyzel means fuck all to me.
    Perhaps as you experienced at JBay, it works well in 8ft point and reef breaks, but then I ask you "Why would you want to ride a mid-length instead of a gun or step-up?"... I don't know man, I'm avoiding anything and everything branded Pyzel in future. Pyzel rant done.
    PS. Would it be possible to normalise your audio levels for future episodes?
    Keep it up, hoping Winter delivers...

    • @TheRegularGuyReview
      @TheRegularGuyReview  2 роки тому +1

      Ahoy bud, thanks for the feedback. It’s always appreciated. This is certainly not the mid I would take for an all rounder or super high performance but it does charge well. Sorry to hear you had a bad run with them. My first Pyzel so will wait till I ride a few more before making a judgement. Hope you find that magic board.

      @@TheRegularGuyReview I did Bru. Dark Star finally delivered it after 6 months and it was worth the wait....
      Stock 6'10" Chilli Mid-strength, I have no qualms saying it's the best board I've ridden in 30+ years: from waist high to decently overhead. About 90% of what I would consider mid-length paddle power but turns and handles like a board a foot shorter. Was really looking forward to putting it through the paces this Winter but sadly I blew my shoulder and needed an operation 2 months back, so only getting back into it late Spring.
